Fish and Eels in Epping Forest

Milly gave fantastic service for us tonight. Thoroughly enjoyed food. Plenty of options and cozy atmosphere by the fire. Great parking facilities too.

Popped in this evening for some light snacks. We managed to get a table in front the fire. Great service from Will, Chloe and Millie. Thank you- we will be back soon.

Disappointing. A good bottle of Gavi. Two decent starters. Both main courses were unacceptably not as described on the menu. One meal unexpectedly included a pile of shredded raw pickled onion in vinegar, on top of some vinegar soaked rocket leaves instead of "a green salad". The other had a few plain boiled new potatoes instead of dauphinoise, with very overcooked and badly drained green beans. We did not eat the food and asked for both items to be removed from the bill, which took ages. We had asked for a second bottle of wine but it never arrived. Very disappointing. UPDATE: I had a positive response to my complaint to Vintage Inns who have offered an apology and a voucher to cover the cost of a two course meal with wine in any Mitchells and Butlers pub.

Food was amazing service was brilliant

Excellent destination pub. Fanatic view by the canal and dog friendly. Food was reasonably priced and quality is of a good standard. Well worth a visit even just for a few drinks or coffee by the canal.

I wasn't going to post anything, but after reading other reviews with a similar experience, maybe this feedback will get back the chef? The feedback in question is dry/overcooked food. Honestly, this was the worst fish & chips I've ever eaten. The fish was so dry that I couldn't actually finish mine and had to swap halfway with my husband, who also had dry fish but not as bad as mine. Especially surprised due to the high price. Such a shame as it is a really nice location on the water, and the pub itself has been done up lovely, too. The staff were friendly enough despite being very busy. The outdoor tables could have been cleaner, and cushions for the outdoor seats would have been good. They seemed to be designed to have them, but instead you had to sit on the hard plastic. Some needed a good clean, too, with a lot of duck poop on them. Unsure if I'd go back again, maybe just for a beer, certainly not for the food.

Great little pub and lovely staff

The patio by the river is a lovely spot for a beer. Unfortunately I can't rate any higher as our food was really bad. One of the worst fish and chips I ever had. Portion size was really small at £17, about 10 chips with a small spoon of mushy peas and a very thin piece of fish. Both fish and chips were very over cooked. Would come back for a beer but for food it's a no.

Slow service, food was horrible and do not cater well for gluten and dairy allergies. Very expensive

Food was shockingly bad! Small portions and expensive for what you get! Shame as it's lovely inside just wouldn't eat there! Think they need a better chef!

This dog friendly place has got worse since I went last. In short the mains and dessert took too long to be served. The desert order was messed up with tea and coffee served 15 mins before dessert arrived even though we prompted the staff only 2 out of the 3 orders were actually delivered to our table.It's a great place to meet, eat, have a chat with friends but the poor service spoils it somewhat.

Excellent canalside pub with ultra-friendly staff, lovely open fire and good food and drinks ranges

Came to visit today, had the loveliest time being looked after by Nat and Chloe. We just had some bar snacks whilst sitting in the sun. A plus side for little ones, they sell duck food to feed the ducks on the river!

Me and my friend had a lovely meal and drinkies at The Fish and Eels. Lovely burger...friend had the pork belly which she enjoyed too. Friendly staff, lovely server Jess, attentive. Have been before would return yet again.

Four of us enjoyed a lovely meal at the Fish and Eels. Everything about the visit was enjoyable, the staff, the food, the service, the venue, and the ambience of the place is really good. I am a senior citizen and I had a fall, and the staff could not have been more helpful and caring. Will, the guy who helped me up performed over and above his duty in looking after me, I amnot a small guy, but Will came to my aid instantly and helped me up, Without any concern about his own wellbeing, so thank you son, I really did appreciate everything you did for me. It was such a breath of fresh air to find such a lovely place with lovely staff, thank you all very much. We look forward to returning soon

Beautiful pub, the lamb skewer and dips was delicious and the mini pudding deal was the perfect finish.

Just had a lovely meal served by an absolutely wonderful server, Michelle, who was so helpful, kind, efficient. Will certainly come again. Real pleasure.

Manager was anything other than a manager. RUDE to customers and staff. Distinct lack of professionalism. Food was late and cold. They were clearly understaffed which can't always be helped. However, there was no check back on the table for food, gave up waiting for a server and dessert menus. The general experience was terrible and we won't be returning

Not great, the attitude of the manger today stunk, clearly not set for a high intense customer facing roll. he was swearing even though customers were well within ear shot, i might as well have been a ghost, i was ignored whilst he was looking at a laptop screen as well as continuing to swear. I wasnt shown to the table nor given menus, only 'oh im just setting your table' never came back to me i showed myself to a seat. We were told to order separately at the bar which we did, food came our sporadically which was expected but then to wait over 80 mins 3 final mains after being told '5 mins' 25 mins later the food came out and it was cold. No apology just ill refund it all, complete cop out. Wont be returning any time soon.

Visited as the Fish and Eels has Vegan options on the menu. Started with soup of the day, tomato and red pepper. Very tasty and thick, with bread to dunk in the soup. Only complaint was that it should have been served hotter. A delay in bringing it from the kitchen? My main was the haddock and spinach fishcakes. Good without being spectacular. Vegan burger was a generous portion and looked very enjoyable.

Never disappointed when I visit, whatever the occasion, be it a drink, lunch, dinner or to celebrate a special event. Today celebrating a birthday. We received a warm friendly greeting. Had a nice table by the fire. I was served by Lily, her service was excellent, warm, friendly and prompt. She always has a smile and makes you feel at home, with a nothing is too much trouble attitude, first class. Thanks to the chef, all the food was delicious. We all had a great lunch and look forward to our next visit!

Steak, is very not easy to eat, last place when I can eat steak,

I went there new years eve I ordered prawn cocktail which was ok, then my main meal of rib eye steak ( Well done) it was served to me rare to medium I sent it back and after half hour waiting to which all my other party had now finished theirs it come back still very much under cooked disgusting how a chef can't cook steak properly to their customers requirements my desert was apple & mince custard which was cold the the singer was rubbish they didn't clear the table without being asked to do so, I asked to see the manager he never come to see me the evening was a disaster for me and will never return to that pub again

A very poor experience. The venue was apparently closing for refurbishment therefore the menu was severely depleted!!! If we had known that we would have chosen a more open venue to celebrate our birthday party of 7. Not impressed at all.

I had lunch with family just before Christmas but have not got round to reviewing - I called the day before as two of out party had mobility issues and also I wanted to take my well behaved dog with me and I thought that this may be a challenge given pre Christmas - I was reassured that a table could be provided that would meet my needs and my dog would be welcome. When we got there the experience was excellent from start to finish - Great access ( which was super important for my family) and we were all made to feel really welcome and looked after especially the dog! Food was great well presented and good value - We wanted a long lazy lunch to have a good catch up and we were not rushed - and all the staff were friendly and sensitive to our needs - A great visit - well done

Not impressed at all. first drinks ordered were incorrect then waited ages for starters to arrive. then waited a long time for mains and when arrived was only warm, chicken breast in the curry was overcooked and dry! And the beetroot houmous served with the skewers was dry and hard. ordered mini coffee and deserts, coffees arrived without deserts and we had to ask for them for them again.

Izzie was out our waitress, and a fantastic job she did. Very polite, friendly and was very attentive. Food was ok. Manager I find strange in fact, I find him rude to staff. I also had a conversation with him prior to Xmas over tables and he was very dismissive.

We have come to the fish and eels many times and have absolutely loved the food and service! Tonight my boyfriend and I took both families out for a meal and was served by Izzy an extremely friendly, kind and helpful waitress who really made our night the best it can be. A male manager in a checkered shirt who we didn’t catch name of also made our night fantastic with his humour and great service. The staff at this place are honestly fantastic, as well as the food! We will be back very often!!

Found the best seat in the house, right next to the open fire on a frosty day. Beautiful decor, pleasant atmosphere and delicious food. I could have stayed all day happily, so cosy. Can’t wait to return and explore the walking paths around.

Lovely Sunday roast, good size meal and very tasty

The food was really nice … once it arrived. They seem to not have enough staff as it took ages for seating , menus , orders made , food arrived, second of round of drinks deserted and coffee to order and then to arrive. This was a on a not very busy Saturday and the staff attending were continually running around.

Very hit and miss. Some meals are great but it seems there is always one that is not good when there are more than two people dining. It's lovely and close for us and we would eat regularly, well at least once a month if only we could rely on a decent meal every time. The staff are mainly good and the surroundings are lovely. It feels like the meals are pre-prepared/bought in and cooked on the premises rather than prepared and cooked from scratch. I know it's not possible to do everything from scratch but the main meals should be done that way. Some starters and some deserts can be bought in but surely the mains should be prepared and cooked to order!
