It's hard to write a review when you didn't get served, but here goes. We go here now and then for coffee and a Danish pastry, it can be busy but this time we found most of the tables were empty, so sat down and then I went to order. In spite of so many empty tables and plenty of staff, when I tried to order I was ignored for a good minute or so by the teenagers behind the counter. One then decided to speak to me and said "we're not taking orders as we're too busy, come back in 20 to 30 minutes". They said the same to the people behind me, so now I know why it was half empty. At least I was spared the pain of the pastries that cost over £4. It's a pleasant place to sit and watch the world go by, but never again. I don't like being told my custom isn't wanted because they can't be bothered to get themselves organised. I can see this coffee shop going the same way as the others that folded recently.

I cannot express what an absolute disaster this was; initially I thought the staff taking the order was amazing, but we soon found out the order was totally wrong. Two people had their meals and we then waited over an hour for the other meals to arrive ( repeatedly wrong orders) Apparently the first order had been dropped , but no-one really explained this or gave a real apology. They said they were busy, but we looked and saw empty tables. I was promised a refund and gave my card details, but after a few 2 weeks this is still not in my bank. The restaurant seemed too reliant on students who were too immature to understand customer service. Oh and the food was horrible, cold bread not toasted and burnt rubbery eggs- please take my advice and avoid at all cost. Terrible terrible service and food.

New name but thought we would give it a go for a brunch. Very disappointing. Service was great but food was a real let down. Speed with which it came implied that the breakfasts hadn’t been cooked fresh but were items taken off a buffet. Condition of items confirmed that. Luke warm, fried eggs looked as if standing for a while, bacon dried out. Sausages were still pink in the middle and mushroom wasn’t cooked through. To be fair I think the toast might have been freshly done, and coffee was fine.

Consistently good. Really enjoyed under the previous ownership and Co thing to be delighted under H&H. Avo on sourdough & 2 flat whites. Delicious snack after a walk round St Catherine’s Hill. Seating outside watching the world go by feeding Tod bits of sausages to the dogs. Staff here are lovely, excellent customer service. Nice clean facilities, even when they’re busy :) Will be returning more regularly.

Used to enjoy going here for coffee and cake when it was Coffee Lab now it is Honey&Harvey - coffee was nice - service was ok - cake nice however as we always sit outside for our coffee and people watching was very disappointed they allow smoking outside which completely marred the experience having to contend with trying to enjoy a nice coffee and being smothered by someone's cigarette smoke nearby - I thought this couldn't possibly be allowed but when the waitress enquired with the manager - Oh no they do allow it! Really really surprised! Won't be my favourite location anymore sorry!

Over priced. We had the winchester breakfast with sourdough toast included £14. The toast was toasted to a solid slice and almost teeth shattering the rest of the plate was fine but small portions. The coffee was to our liking and would have again £3.65. Toilets are on the top floor so not accessible to everyone unless there are disabled elsewhere. Service was reasonable with not to long await though was not crowded. Would we visit again more than likely not but i have judged it on just one visit.

This has recently been refurbished and the menu changed but it’s unfortunately no improvement. It is now overpriced, the portions are much smaller. The service isn’t great. We used to go regularly. We don’t go there anymore.

Now Honey and Harvey. Very pleasant and helpful staff - sausage bap lovely! I asked for the sausage to be well cooked and the waiter immediately said not a problem. It was a lovely bap and worth the money. Glad to see this is now back to what it was as a cafe.

The refurb has stripped this cafe of all character, replacing it with a sterile, cold atmosphere. This once friendly, bustling cafe with friendly, chatty staff is now pretentious and overpriced. Some of the staff were actually rude, whilst others were disinterested. The staff behind the counter were welcoming. The coffees we ordered were barely drinkable as they were luke warm when they finally arrived. The lady at the counter gave me an order number to display on our table for the food order, but the waiter didn’t have the number so he had to wander around the restaurant calling out the order!? The “ head waiter” treated customers as an inconvenience. I didn’t see him actually do anything other than stomp about, asking staff and customers what they were doing!!! We will not be wasting our time or money here again.

Gave this place the benefit of the doubt after the new refurb (new name, everything else exactly the same to be honest). Tried this place years ago and had the worst cake of my life. Could not believe my luck, that the cake once again was absolutely awful. I’m the least fussy person ever and I couldn’t even stomach it. I’ve never sent back food in my life, but we had no choice. It was the driest cake ever, almost tasted frozen. Service is poor, the amount of times the poor waitresses had to constantly apologise to all the tables. They’ve got so much wrong is this place - needs massive improvement. Will never return.

More recently the Square has gone a bit downward. The coffee is still great but the carrot cake I had last time was extremely dry and did not taste good at all. I love the little garden space at the back but with the kitchen vents it does not smell nice at all. Building in very run down and tired. Look forward to what they do with the refurb.

Visited today 10/9/22 with family, son starting Uni in the town, Ordered food and drinks for 6 people, not cheap nearly £70 For basically a sandwich and a drink each, Waited over 20 mins for the drinks to arrive 2 coffees and 4 soft drinks, one of the glasses for the soft drinks was filthy, Waited over 40 mins for the 6 sandwiches, so slow ! 1 of the sandwiches had raw bacon and sausage in which they refunded us for, Our table wasn’t cleaned before we sat down, absolutely filthy, The whole cafe looks and feels like a good clean wouldn’t go a miss. Not a great start in Winchester, I’m sure there’s better, Definitely won’t return here

We stopped in for a spontaneous lunch. Staff were friendly and polite but it took half an hour for two toasties and some tap water to arrive. The chilli jam on the toastie was far too sweet with no kick at all and one side of the bread totally soggy. The side salad tasted watery and bad..such a shame as it is a lovely spot.

At The Square a few weeks ago on a sunny afternoon in Winchester. Nice little cafe a few minutes walk from the Cathedral. Staff are friendly and cafe clean and tidy. We sat at the front the first time and in the covered courtyard at the back the second time. Had a lovely sausage roll there, nice cakes too! Just one thing though...along the back wall of the covered courtyard there is a covering of plastic greenery which works well, but to the right, where there is a stair-case down to another building/cellar, there is no covering and I think it would be good to add some greenery there to hide away the stairs area. Otherwise, highly recommended.

We stopped by for a quick drink en route to the Cathedral. The front of the cafe looks very empty, but that is because there is seating at the front and also in the quiet courtyard behind. Service was good, and the covered courtyard meant it could be used in all weathers. The only downside was that the toilets were a long trek up to the second floor!

We were attracted to this café on a warm day because of it’s pleasant outside seating area. It is necessary to order at the counter which is then delivered to the table, cash is not taken. We had two flat whites which cost £6.40. It is definitely not the most efficient of cafés. We waited for well over 20 minutes for our coffee to be delivered and other people were served out of sequence.

I visited today and overall left feeling so dissapointed. Firstly we had to wait so long for two hot drinks but when the drinks did arrive the cups were dirty. I returned mine to the waiter and I was given another dirty cup (I could scrape away food debris on the inside). After waiting for this to be sorted my tea was over brewed and far too strong. We treated ourselves to a custard tart each. Don't waste your money! £3 each and tasteless. I won't be coming back.

The food is delicious and freshly cooked to order. Portions are very generous and the quality of the food is very good. It has indoor, pavement and heated covered courtyard seating. Is dog friendly too 😃 in the courtyard and pavement seating.

Lovely little place in the centre of Winchester. We went for lunch, found a table straight away. Food came out quick, we had bubble and squeak and a cheese toastie, both super delicious.We also treated ourselves to a cinnamon swirl, which was delicious, too. As an added bonus, The Square is dog-friendly so bringing our puppy was no problem.

The Square is a lovely cafe, great atmosphere and great coffee. The one thing that lets it down is the ordeal of trying to order any baked goods if you have an allergy. There are no clear markers on any cakes and then the staff have to flick through an endless list that ALWAYS ends in them unclear whether the food is safe or not. It's a simple thing to fix!

A harsh title. Given that I drink coffee from cafe's on a daily basis, sometime twice, this place totally deserved a bad review.The coffee arrived tepid, one degree away from cold. When I returned them the wait for revised cups felt like an eternity. When they were finally brought over, my worst fears had been realised - they were at boiling point. I have no evidence but based on the froth and temperature of the cup handle - they had been possibly microwaved. At this point we left the coffees and left the premises. Perhaps my mind was tainted, but the cake was also disgusting. The chocolate cake tasted like dry cocoa powder? and i was surprised at the american style mega portions we were served. Although on reflection I'm happy that the margin for that cake went in the bin along with 90% of the bit we didn't eat.Not recommended even for a toilet stop.

This looked an interesting place to try: open frontage with outside seating as well as two storeys inside. Friendly and cheerful male servers, sullen unwelcoming female server (mine !). The poached eggs on salmon, avocado and sourdough was quick to arrive and looked and tasted just fine (soft eggs, lots of decorative vegetation); insipid decaf tea which could have done with another spoonful of a decently stronger tea.Space to talk and linger.

I don't like to eat in restaurants that allow dogs inside. It does not seem healthy to me. The food at the restaurant was OK, but nothing special. The salad did not have dressing on it and they did not even offer any olive oil.

Had a divine piece of raspberry cake and really nice coffee, However the service was a bit lacklustre, took a while for coffee to come out and the cafe wasnt that busy. Tables hadnt been cleaned. Having said that, I would definitely go back again

Daughter has raved about this place but I'm afraid we were disappointed to say the least. Primarily because we were standing in a crush by the door waiting to be served while people are trying to come in and out it's just not pleasant. While you try to see the cakes on offer and read the little notices that tell you what they are, people are trying to get past and staff are trying to pass. They are positioned in the worst place. Concerned to see dishes being washed in a tiny sink by hand, no dishwasher. Hygiene? The eastern European lady that served us was not pleasant at all, we were clearly an inconvenience. Cake and hot drinks were fine. Seating not comfortable.

Picked an independent coffee shop for something different and I’m afraid was disappointed. Slow service and stale cake. Chaotic around the till area otherwise probably would have sent back. A shame.

Enjoyed sitting outside in the (probably) last dinner sun! Great choice of cakes including gluten free- unusual but delicious carrot cake. Also lovely coronation chicken gluten free sandwich. You have to go to the counter to order. Would be useful to have the cakes written on a specials menu. Place is near the Cathedral. Would definitely go back.

Venturing from the hustle and bustle of the high street, we stumbled across this gorgeous coffee shop during a day out in Winchester on the 11/09/19. The environment is calming, classy, accommodating, minimalist, tasteful and unpretentious. The two polite ladies in charge of the place welcomed us with friendly smiles and went to great lengths to accommodate us. One of them suggested the scrummy vegan black forest cake which had just been delivered to go with our perfect cappuccino and mint tea when the spread on offer tickle our fancy - nothing against the other cakes we just wanted something chocolatey. You can help yourself to lemon flavoured water if you fancy. We were last to leave and could have stayed there all day. Four stars because cakes are a tad on the pricey side and the floor could do with sanding and vanishing. Thanks again for the experience and can't wait to visit again with family next month!

Lovely atmosphere in exceptionally cool surroundings. The brownies are to die for - Oreo cookie was my favourite; my wife loved the salted caramel. It also rates as one of the most artistic flat whites I’ve seen. Must try the place (but brace yourself for the two flights of stairs to the toilet!)

Called in for morning coffee and cake. It is counter service and was quite busy. It's difficult to see the cakes as they are tucked away in a corner. The croissants, served cold with no offer of warming them up were burnt underneath and not served with butter although one very small portion was served when we asked. My builders tea tasted of lapsang souchong so I went back to the counter. They explained that it had probably been in the teapot prior to serving the builders tea. 5 minutes later the waitress put it in front of me with the words, 'there's your tea then.' hmm. The bacon sandwiches were ok but small and nothing special. The coffee was nondescript. The music was loud and the cafe felt rushed and busy. I was there with someone in a wheelchair, no help was offered and we felt squashed up, The toilets are on the 2nd floor and are those unisex toilets which make many people feel uncomfortable. Quite pricey, definitely has pretentions which it does not live up to. There was one, lovely, smiley waitress who said goodbye and apologised about the tea as we left this was not enough to improve my impression of this cafe.

Stopped at The Square for mid morning Coffee and Cake. Very good cup of coffe and the Carrot Cake was excellent. Pleasent surroundings, friendly staff and, even though the Cafe was quite busy, prompt delivery if our order to the table.

Slightly burnt vegan croissants and uncared for avocado smeared on thin white toast for breakfast - so easy to get right !

Had bacon sandwiches at lunchtime on tiger bread, bread was not as fresh as I would have hoped. Normally tiger bread has a slightly crunchy crust but the bread was very soft. We had to wait over 20 minutes after we’d ordered, there were only two people serving front of house and it seemed a long wait. We then had coffee and lemon drizzle cake. The coffee and hot chocolate were excellent, the cake was awful! The first piece was really stale, it was replaced with a fresh piece after being told it had only come in today. The second piece was incredibly heavy, stodgy and no flavour of lemon. I’ve also never had lemon drizzle smothered in butter cream. The staff were friendly and obviously hardworking. I would go back for coffee but not food.

Enjoyed a coffee (tasty but realised it was quite strong, would ask for 1 shot next time) and light lunch, friendly, airy and bright upstairs on a wet and windy summer day.

Very enjoyable refreshment stop, tasty bacon sandwich and loved the strawberry champagne tea. Outside seating on a warm day make for a very nice atmosphere. More specials on board inside might be missed so worth checking out, would definitely return to try more. Cakes seemed quite expensive but it is Winchester after all.

We stopped here for a coffee and nibble, huge variant in sizes of cakes we ordered, one very large the other rather modest. The milk served with the tea looked rather raw, tasted ok, but the bits were a bit off putting.

Our go to place for a nice cup of coffee. Staff is friendly and the coffee is truly good. Lovely terrace.

We popped to winchester today and wanted to grab some lunch. We popped in the Square for lunch. The menu is extremely limited so you would expect to have the ingredients in so you can provide at least what is on the menu.

The cafe concept is good but the food could benefit from being fresh. Cakes are often stale and can be a day or more old. Why not store cakes, buns etc better and dispose of stale goods. Why should customers be sold stale food? Some cakes are also over-priced for their size.

This is a new start-up. The menu is a small one and these guys are in direct competition with established premises such as Cafe Monde and the Slug.

I was there on a busy Saturday lunchtime, there were a lot of people rushing about but I was served reasonably quickly. I ordered an avocado and bacon sandwich, strangely the bread had been toasted - odd but OK I suppose, but the bacon was so burnt it no longer had any bacon flavour.

The competition is stiff in Winchester so restaurants / cafés need to be at the top of their game. There's much to like here - good location, pleasing decor and a menu that intrigues but I did feel that £7.50 for a very small chicken and chorizo wrap was as much as £1.50 too much (I can imagine business rates are very high in the square). That said let's finish on some positives in addition to those above: the cups and saucers are beautiful, the service inside at the till was bright and cheery and the coffee was well presented.

It wasn't very busy when we went, we received lovely friendly service. Food was prompt and good quality. Very nice experience here.

Lots of staff rushing around doing nothing in particular. Tables not cleaned. Long wait for coffee and cinnamon bun. How long can that take?! Bun came out followed by coffee when bun already eaten. Been here a few times and hasn’t improved. Pity. Coffee and cakes look good but the standard of overall service and cleanliness poor. We won’t be bothering again.

Busy place at lunch time on Saturday. Managed to find a space. Recommend the soup with toasted sour dough as it is home made and substantial for £5.60 if I remember. I also recommend the vegetarian dish. Harrisa humous with toasted beetroot on delicious toasted multi grain brown bread. The bread was equally as delicious as what went as the topping. I also loved the salad. We will be back to try other dishes on the menue on another visit. Unfortunately, we had no room for cakes. There was a very good selection of 6-7 choices of tempting cakes. An excuse to return for tea. My only negative feedback is that when it was busy, the cooked food took a relatively long time to arrive.

I ordered avocado toast and a cappucino. The avo toast had literally BARELY any avocado on the toast. looked exactly liked a bit of green butter spread thin on top of toast, and it didn't even cover the whole toast. They only spread the avo thinly over the center. Takes the term avocado toast to a whole new level. Further, the cappucino was cold. This place wasn't particularly busy for this to happen. Would not recommend. Spend your money elsewhere.

This is our favourite cafe in Winchester. Its obviously a favourite with others too, as its often busy with regulars who love it. The atmosphere is upbeat and you are always greeted with a smile.

Called in for lunch, we had delicious sandwich and a wrap. It was warm and service was really quick, also a great selection of different teas, which I feel is hard to find. We also thought the staff were working really hard, when they did seem a little short on people. Worth a visit.

Located in the square beside Winchester Cathedral, it is in a prime position. It has both inside & outside seating, I can imagine it would be a good people watching place sitting outside.

It may be a great place if you have a dog as they certainly welcome pets but if you wish to have a quiet coffee without barking animals and a quite obvious dog smell, this is not the place for you. Main concern is the open cake cabinet by the right of the till where clearly dog hair is a risk to the food...…..

Lovely place to sit outside it was cold but with the canopy over and the heaters on it was very nice, you pick a table then go to the counter to order the service,coffee was good they did forget to bring out my milk but when i told them it came quickly so all was fine.

First visit to The Square and likely the last.
