Really enjoyable experience. It was great to go to a truly authentic Portuguese restaurant. Really enjoyed the fish selection, and the wine list was a real surprise. It included several wines that we have only come across when we have traveled away from the main tourist areas of Portugal.

We've been going for years including take away through lockdown. It never fails to satisfy. Very large portions and always beautifully cooked. Any poor reviews would make me wonder why. Extremely friendly staff. Our 'go to' in Henley

A great day out in Henley deserves a grand meal. Meandering through the town centre on a glorious sunny day you can’t fail to notice The Square. Diners sit outside on tables drinking wine, coffee and indulging in fine Portuguese food. There wasn’t a spare table, so this was a great sign. I was seated in the rear of the restaurant and ordered an Americano coffee. Without even perusing a menu, I ordered the sea bass with sautéed potatoes. Approximately twenty minutes later the food arrived. The bass was cooked to perfection and was a hearty size. Unfortunately the sautéed potatoes were diced and fried. When the waiter asked if everything was to my liking, I informed him that the bass was fantastic but the potatoes were fried. He went off to the kitchen and never returned. This was strange, when he reappeared he said nothing. I was confused so I went to the bar and paid my bill, left no tip but thanked the bartender.

A bit disappointed after our meal. We had scallops and cod fish cakes for starters which were fine. For our main we shared the piri piri chicken which was really dry. We probably should have sent it back. Portuguese egg tart for dessert was good.

Hard to describe just how fantastic this was! So much fish, lovely wine and then fantastic CAKE, gorgeous dessert wine and awesome coffee…. Total heaven!

Very average experience I though it was going to be better. Portions of food we’re fairly small and not worth the money. They “charge” 20% VAT on top of your bill it should already be included in the initial high prices so your actually paying 20% service charge covered as “VAT” Wouldn’t recommend.

Nice Portuguese food. Generous portions. Well-cooked fish although prawn piri-piri was overcooked (reheated prawns??). Convenient location. Decor/ambiance just OK. Service OK. Decent value. Wine not great.

We have eaten at The Square many times, and it never disappoints. The food is cooked in an authentic Portuguese style. The fish and meat is always amazing, fresh and the same could be said for the other dishes across the menu. The service is always friendly and impeccable. With a relaxed atmosphere in the bar and restaurant.

We had a truly fantastic meal ; mouthwatering range of fish/seafood for starters, squid, prawns etc I ordered Filete de Garoupa com Molho Provençal. What they served was not Garoupa fish. They served Basa Fish (Panga fish Pangasius). They should not do this to customers

Brilliant restaurant. Go there every time we stay at Henley. Book in advance & it is dog friendly. Wonderful staff, wish it was on my doorstep!

We have lived in Portugal for 43 years on and off. The Square restaurant is probably the most authentic Portuguese food I have ever tasted outside of Portugal. We will definitely return. Thank you Jamie Alex and staff.

We enjoyed attentive but discreet service while being served delicious food. This is the place to eat seafood and both the sardines and mackeral were simply but very well prepared. I also thought it was very good value

My review repeats what a previous reviewer wrote. ‘Disappointing’. Over an hour before starters arrived, someone else’s meal delivered to our table and they had to find the right one for ours. Another meal, chips were delivered and had to wait another 10mins for the main course whilst chips were going cold. Beef skewers chewy. Service was extremely poor. Definitely not value for money and won’t be returning.

Disappointing! Poor service, waited an hour for a bread basket, pate was more like fish paste, starters were greasy and the cheese rissoles were little findus crispy pancakes, Starters all came out at different times, some were finished before others had arrived, one main arrived and was for the wrong table! Other mains all came out at different times, table was drafty. We definitely won’t return

Very disappointed by how our group was treated. We booked for 6 people. The table was not ready and they wanted to squeeze 6 of us on a table for a max of 4. What was more annoying, there was no care for the inconvenience and a really snobbish attitude. They told it was our choice whether we wanted to sit. We therefore decide to leave and have dinner somewhere else.

Wow wow wow. Haven’t been for a few years but the seafood is even better than we remembered. Cockles - would never normally order them. Outstanding! Scallops - always in my wish list but here the sauce - Heavenly. The butterflied gigantic king prawns were like small lobsters but easier to eat - Planchamazing. Service and welcome superb. Not stupidly priced either.

Great atmosphere of a mediterranean cafe/restaurant on Henley's market square. Fresh fish, nicely cooked and served. Kind and prompt service.

Went with friends who love the place so difficult to complain. Service was very slow with no apology for keeping us waiting for 45 minutes before we could order, an offhand "we're busy" My scallops were very small, overcooked and swimming in oil. My monkfish and prawn main course was similarly swimming in oil. Unpleasant. My partner enjoyed his fish soup starter but agreed the food generally was far too oily. We've been to Portugal a number of times and have always loved the food so this is not representative. We won't be back.

Great location terrible food. The soup was extremely salty, the chicken was dry and the squid was awful. Such a shame as great menu.

An obviously well informed diner outside urged us to eat here: 'Best seafood in Henley'. It was 2 pm and we were immediately conducted to our table. The couple next to us also confirmed the quality of the establishment. They urged us to order the monkfish and we followed their advice, but we couldn't resist the grilled squid. Nós não ficamos desapontados! We were not disappointed. I heartily recommend this place. The fish is fresh and well cooked; the wine is tasty and well priced, the staff are attentive and their is a great vibe. . There are plenty of specialities - rice dishes and cataplanas and the desserts looked tempting and meat is available, but the star is the fish which comes straight from Billingsgate. Delicious anniversary treat. We had some delicious clams and prawns for starters and a fabulous fish stew with a variety of shellfish and potatoes. Taste was so delicious and took me straight to the med! Will return just for this dish although confess the variety of fresh fish dishes is mouth watering.

Very good from the off- waiter very friendly and attentive. Ordered a nice bottle of wine (not too expensive) and a mix of starters rather than mains courses which were all really good. Nice ambiance for a Thursday lunchtime- really good value and the food was great!

I have eaten here three times so far this year and have had an excellent meal on each occasion. My latest meal was with my son and I had the sardine starter followed by Daurade (Sea Bream) and the chocolate and orange cake. My son had the Portuguese sausage followed by the cod and potato bake and lemon sponge. My fish was perfectly cooked, very fresh and substantial portions. The daurade was one of the best fish dishes that I have eaten in a very long time. My son was equally pleased with his choices. The puddings were tasty and much lighter than they looked when they arrived. Overall a splendid restaurant
