The Spotted Dog in Dacorum

Service very slow and several menu items unavailable (7pm sitting!) only a choice of 2 mains. We were told it was the ‘chefs last day’ as a reason. The chef was female and therefore couldn’t be the people advertised on the website. We felt mislead and disappointed.

The positives are it’s a quint pub and the roast was well cooked. The negatives are that the service was poor very young staff seemed to enjoy chatting behind the bar rather than serving, consequently all our roasts took ages to arrive and were luke warm. Equally the desert rhubarb crumble was Luke warm and the rhubarb was not properly cooked. Could it have lived up to the earlier reviews? My answer is probably yes, but would I go go there again, that’s a hard one to answer, but probably not. Why because standards are normally ingrained and it shouldn’t be hit or miss. Stopped by this wonderful pub for a bank holiday lunchtime treat - and it was fantastic! Great food, service and dog friendly too. Special mention to the most delicious potato salad - it was exquisite! Creamy yet light, perfectly seasoned and topped with a velvety smooth duck egg yolk. Will think about this potato salad often and definitely return when we’re next in town! (Special thanks for the recipe from the kind chef 😊) 5* service all round.

Popped in yesterday for a bite to eat at lunchtime. We just had a couple of sandwiches and chips - absolutely delicious. Beautifully presented and washed down with a couple of pints of delicious real ale. A very enjoyable experience and our well behaved Labrador was made to feel very welcome as well. Will definitely be back soon!

I was really looking forward to this meal but found the place had been so overrated. I had ordered cod and vegetables; the cod was very small and it was one vegetable. Cost against quality was very poor. For dessert I had chocolate Ganache again very disappointed This was even more poor quality. I saw the chef who did not look well presented, when will chefs realise that if you walk about where the customers are you need to look presentable and clean. The general staff were friendly and welcoming when you arrived. I will not be recommending this place and will not be going back anytime soon. A shame really needs to up their game on quality of food.

Excellent food, lovely service, different menu choices. Delicious - soup, fig & goat cheese tart, butternut squash& Parma ham salad and coddled egg AND that was just the starters!! Service took a while but worth waiting for.

We live in St Albans and visited Flamstead for a lovely circular walk around the countryside, and lunch at The Spotted Dog. Everything was great... the friendly service, the guest ale and all our food, which was full of flavour and lovingly presented without being pretentious. We don't write many reviews, but we are very happy to make the effort in this case, as it was special.

Whilst visiting on business, I found this wonderful little gem hiding in flamstead. I’m lost for words but it was amazing. From the moment I walked through the door, the gent at the bar greeting me as i walked in & also catered to my every need. I come from a back ground of 2 x AA rosette & mitchein star restaurants.& this by far is up there. Well done, I was so impressed with the presentation, service, & fresh quality and flavours of the food served. Two choices of menus, both Amazing, where one offers wine matching to each course, brilliant. I was dining alone on this occasion for work , however I would love to make a trip on a leisure trip, to share with my partner & friends. The decor is tasteful fresh light & airy. Also would love to see the log burners on in winter time , nice touch. One last thing if you don’t have AA rosette or Michelin star, you should go for it, please pass my comments on to the kitchen team as the produced fantastic food. Thanks again Shaun.

We came here as a group of family and friends on a recommendation from other friends that live nearby… we were staying in St Albans and the Spotted Dog was a short (£12) taxi ride away. That short taxi ensured we had one of the best pub food experiences any of us have ever had. As we were a group, we emailed ahead and were allocated a private dining room to the side of the building. The excellent chef and team had put on a 5 course tasting menu with a couple of options for each dish, I went for lamb neck ravioli, scollops, rump steak, and dessert plus cheese. The ravioli was delicious, fresh pasta clearly made on site and fabulous tastes of the meat and sauce. My favourite dish was the rump though, I believe it had been cooked sous vide then finished on a grill, the result being an almost fillet-like tenderness with the flavour of rump. Excellent. This pub is going places! and it would not surprise me to see rosettes in the near future… we will be back!

We held a 40th birthday party at The Spotted Dog. We could not have asked for a better night. The organisation of the party beforehand was excellent. The venue is beautiful. There were lots of food options and offered such good value. On the night the waiters and bar staff were great and the food and wine was exceptional. A week later, and I am still telling people about the best beef starter we have ever had. We can not wait to go back.

Blooming luvverly. We’ve eaten here two of the last three weeks for Sunday lunch. The second of these two was as part of a large group with people wanting to eat at different times due to work and travel. Everyone ate when they wanted to. The food is superb and there’s plenty of it. The starters are tasty and well presented and the menu has something for everyone. Above all this is the charming welcome and attentive service from Clare, Tom and the team. A great place to eat, drink, drink some more and be merry. A hidden gem.

Honestly cannot thank The Spotted Dog enough for a fantastic family meal for 12. We booked in advance and was recommended to have a roast delivered to the table. Everything was cooked to perfection-particularly the meat (best lamb I’ve had)-and all my favourite sides. Friendly, homely and well worth a visit. It made our Christmas!

Visited here for a pre Christmas family meal following all the lovely reviews. The food was ok. Between us we had ordered starters of soup, prawn cocktail and camembert which were lovely, the main courses consisted of a traditional turkey dinner which looked lovely and i had the beef bourgignon which unfortunately was very fatty and chewy (this was made aware to the lady on duty but no response or apology offered) this was followed by dessert which was a roulade (bit like a viennetta) and Christmas pudding both were ok. We were also sat in the main bar area which given we had a young child with us and this was a family occasion would have been nicer to be in the restaurant area as bit was so quiet. We felt like we were intruding on the locals having a quiet drink at the bar. I would probably go back just not for food as the pub is cute and cosy.

My friends and I booked for Christmas lunch. From when we entered The Spotted Dog we were greeted by the locals and by the lovely lady behind the bar. (Never asked her name) we were served our three course meal which was beautifully detailed on our plates and so delicious. At no time were we rushed which meant we were relaxed unlike some places. We had a wonderful time. Thanks to everyone.

Went for work Christmas meal, unfortunately no brown bread with prawn cocktail asked for bread got white! Pigs in blankets completely missed off meal. We thought that we would try a new venue as we often go to the Red Lion in Water end for our Sunday Roast. It was a mistake to come here as the service was bad. We were not even greeted on arrival and had to seek service . The food was amazing but the team just couldn’t cope. Our drinks order took 25 minutes to arrive and when it did it was wrong. We are staying at home for our summer holiday this year, but trying visiting new places in the local area and in Herts/Beds we are lucky there is so much on our doorstep. We picked up a leaflet for a Flamstead farm walk (which took us around lanes, farms around the village) and decided a pub in the village was a good place to end the walk. We picked a very hot morning - the start of the late july heat wave. I was a little warm when we arrived at the pub, but had a very calm and lovely friendly welcome and were served quickly. The choice of beers was excellent and a lovely, varied lunch menu was on offer, and some treats on the dessert menu (I had a lovely lemon posset). The highlight was sitting in a little shady courtyard to the side of the pub. It was cool and the whole experience reminded me of a lazy long lunch in Spain/Italy. There were swifts swooping around, making a lovely noise which again reminded me of being on holiday abroad. It really is a super lunch spot and lovely to combine with a walk or bike ride. There is plenty of seating inside, so imagine it would be cosy inside in the winter.

We never go out for Sunday lunch because my husband says I make a good one. However he suggested we went out today and I found The Spotted Dog on Google. I loved the decor of this country pub but we loved the food even more. They have my favourite NZ Sauvignon too. Everything homemade even my vegetable Wellington. Good roast potatoes and our whole meal had lots of flavour. Sadly I didn’t have room for dessert so will surely have to go back. We will also try it during the week. Will also take the family. Thank you - I may be cooking far less on Sundays.

We handed over our grandson aged 3 here, who we had been looking after, to his Mum & Dad; who had flown in to Luton after a weeks holiday together. We were made to feel very welcome in the Spotted Dog, and we were very well looked after by the hostess. She bothered to provide our grandson with a couple of games / toys to play with and made a lot of him. We ordered food, and it was superb and reasonably priced. The hostess of the pub let my grandson have some ice cream (free of charge) and throughout our stay was very friendly and accommodating. What a really nice experience it was for all of us. We (grandparents) live near Derby, but should I have occasion to revisit the village which is just off the M1 and only 7 miles from Luton airport, we would most definitely like to visit the Spotted Dog again.

Had a brilliant evening with delicious 3 course Christmas meal with festive table setting. Followed by fantastic live music with Threefold. A great start to the festive season! Coming back tomorrow for another helping of the Christmas menu!

Was most surprised the food was a Christmas lunch or salmon it was cooked to perfection and it was served with all the nice little details the veg was all very nice and plenty of it the tables looked nice with candles and decorations . We booked to Sunday lunch for our family to celebrate my son’s birthday. The food was excellent and the dealt with the arrival, late as always, of nine adults and six kids (aged 5yrs - 5months) without turning a hair. We felt welcome and well looked after! I also really liked the decor and the furnishings - they have made the place light and airy and very comfortable!

We were staying in the Holiday Inn Luton South and were looking for somewhere in walking distance to have lunch or dinner.

Eleven of us turned up with dogs after walking locally. We were made to feel very welcome and the landlady and staff were extremely friendly. The coffees were superb.

I was going out for a walk in the area with my 4 year old. Wed aimed to start with a pub lunch at the 3 blackbirds pub next door, but was not to be. Having been told to wait 30 mins, the pub then decided they weren’t serving lunch on a Sunday.

We felt at home as soon as we entered Coffee Dog and that was made more so by the very warm welcome we had from the lady serving coffee. The coffee was good and made to order. It also came with a small biscuit on the side. There were papers to read, so it was a very relaxed place to sit.

We had a Sunday Roast at The Potted Dog. The food was amazing, and they have local beers on tap. The Spotted Dog is an old pub, with a modern twist. The staff are friendly and welcoming. It is clearly a dog friendly pub, so if this bothers you, ask to eat in the restaurant part, away from them.

Great to see small pubs like this making their own food and not buying in pre prepared food. Nothing like homemade food. Small menu great food. Keep the good work up. Well done.

Very friendly and welcoming + nice place but no excuse for the very very slow food service, especially after response to an earlier comment - took over an hour to come (food was fairly basic and a pretty much empty pub). Order made and delivered was slightly wrong too (fat instead of skinny chips. No explanation for delays or errors. Sorry to leave a negative review but don't bother unless you're not too hungry and have loads of time to spare

Rooms are clean and functional, basic, no frills. Bed hard as in sleeping on a door! Landlady very hospitable, landlord cooked a wonderful breakfast. This used to be a pub but that side of business is closed. Refurbishment is over due. But it's kept very clean .

Only had drinks however the staff and locals very friendly. Comfortable and homely. Not the usual pub. Settees and easy chairs with coffee tables. Magazines, newspapers and books to read. Home to home without the washing up.

Un muy bien decorado y bien cuidado pub pero el personal era muy estresados en el día que fuimos y no muy amable. La comida tardó 35 minutos en llegar y era muy normalito. El humus estaba seco y la pasta era insípida.

We had a superb Sunday lunch earlier this year; Friendly staff, very good food, but waited ages for the food to arrive.We went for brunch on May BH, having pre-booked, and told it was expected to be quiet, which it was only 2 other tables ahead of us.Having ordered our food, off a limited brunch menu (which was fine by us), we then waited almost a full hour for an omlette, BLT and a breakfast. The food was great but why did it take so long?What I found most disappointing was the lukewarm response from the owner, who just seemed to blame the chef, and claimed to be oblivious of the generally slow service. There was no real apology or concern for the delay. Given that the bar was quiet I couldn't understand why he or the other staff member couldn't have helped out?I acccept it was a Bank Holiday, but if you are offering a brunch then please ensure that you staff up to it! Basic management I think.Unfortunately we won't be rushing back, and for comparison, there are pubs that serve good serve in other villages (eg Studham), who do seem to care more about teh service they provide their valuable customers.

We went here on Saturday night after it was recommended by the B&B owner we were staying with. The pub is cosy and homely and doesn't really feel like a pub, which I really liked.The food was delicious - possibly the nicest risotto I've ever eaten - and staff friendly.My husband and I really liked the fact that the menu wasn't fussy / pretentious in any way and also that there were only four or five options per course; it made it feel as if the focus was much more on quality than trying to cater for every eventuality.My only regret is that we were only on an overnight stay as I would happily have eaten here again.(The range of gin they stock is also impressive!)

A friend of mine suggested we visit The Spotted Dog after a visit to the Downs (she is more local than us). We enjoyed a fantastic Sunday roast we will certainly return. They were more than happy to accommodate our son, who enjoyed a smaller portion of the roast lamb!

We've just enjoyed a gorgeous roast beef at the spotty dog. The pub is located in the village and your enchanted by all the nicnacks around the pub. The owners are so friendly and welcoming we felt so comfortable, like home from home. We had the two course option on the Mother's Day menu at £15 a head it was amazing value. We enjoyed every bit of our roasts followed by apple and rhubarb crumble and Eton mess. The crumble and custard was delicious as was the Eton mess they only thing I would criticise is the lack of meringue. There wasn't a childrens menu availble but that was ok as our little one had a late lunch so just snacked on a few chips. Overall a great meal, welcoming and very friendly staff in a homely setting can't get better than that really and £45 with coffees and presscco excellent!

This restaurant is charming and welcoming. We were in the snug which was great for Mothers day lunch for 4 generations.The menu was eclectic and very good value for money. I prebooked a table for 8 for Sunday dinner and was disappointed with my experience. The pub was not busy and yet we had to wait over an hour for our starters. Menu was very limited they had run out of the salmon and one of the choices of dessert was xmas pudding!!! I cleared the starter plates & took them to the bar and we had to wait ages for our drinks to arrive. The staff were friendly but it seemed there was only one lady trying to do everything with a young girl to help who cleared my grandsons dinner before he'd finished but to be fair they took the price of his dinner off the bill.

Very friendly place to eat with great food. Not a huge choice on the menu but something for everyone. Would recommend this to anyone in the area.
