Booked a table here due to hearing about the amazing pullman seating. The pullman was lovely and such a lovely atmosphere, but... the food... it was £16 fot three courses which is a bargain, but this is because you're basically getting a school dinner. The food didn't look or taste fresh, the sausage and chips came in a bowl drowned in gravy and the chocolate fudge cake was cold and really dry. Overall, great concept, but really poorly executed! Don't travel miles for this place like we did.

Girlfriend booked this for the Pullman dining experience, which itself was a very good experience. We did not know it was 3 courses for 15.95 before we went and the quality of the food really shows in this price, it was like eating a school dinner in a Pullman. Great pub with a lot of potential, let down by the food

Visited today Sunday 27th April as a group of 38 people and we were all impressed by the food, the staff, and the general standards of the visit. We had a traditional Sunday lunch and there was everything including parsnips (which is unusual). All freshly cooked and served hot and followed by home made deserts. One of us commented that the lemon cheesecake was the best she had tasted! The staff were great and friendly. The two courses were real value for money. Thank you all xxx

This was a birthday present meal out. We like nice food and restaurants and I am a rail enthusiast. The idea of combining the two was a great one. A place with so much potential and potential, sadly let itself down. We travelled quite a distance to go here. The outside looks tired and unwelcoming. It looked dark and uninviting. The outside space needed some TLC - weeding, a brush-up and some lighting. Inside, we were shown to our Pullman carriage table. It was tired, the window was broken, the table in need of a varnish or a cloth. My cushion had a (cigarette?) burn in it. No draught cider was available. We were presented with a menu and told that three or four dishes were unavailable. Didn't leave much choice, but things we liked. The food we chose was 'OK'. Main disappointment, I went for salmon in dill sauce. I chose buttery mash, which was a bit processed. It came with a few frozen peas and carrots. Half-way through, I came across a long black hair stuck in my dinner. I didn't eat much more of it. To be fair, the waitress seemed pretty horrified, but that's not the point. They asked what they could do to make it better, I suggested just knocking it off the bill. Pretty grim really, but not surprising, sadly. We had dessert which was OK. Lacking in customers, atmosphere and quality. A real shame. Overall, opportunity lost. If it gets its act together, I'd consider going back. Sadly, it feels like it won't last. Please prove me wrong.

I ate at the spot gate, 5 months ago, it was lovely however, today was the worst food ever, it was awful. I had lasagne, warmed up from frozen in the microwave- absolutely was. It was watery, tasteless and lumpy, swimming in oil. The presentation was diabolical and looked so unappetising.

What an absolute dive. Years since we've been hear and thought it might be nice to try again. On waiting, the two staff at the bar were discussing how they needed to get people out, not good to hear whilst waiting. We had booked for 6pm on Mother's Day. We had booked for the main restaurant but were told the tables inside still had people sitting eating and couldn't say how long they'd be. Said she could try on the carriage to see if there was a table (even though we had booked a table.) She came back and said she'd show us to the table on the carriage. There was only one table of customers, the remaining tables had dirty plates still adorned The seats of the carriage were ripped. We hadn't even sat down and were asked what we wanted to drink, think that was to make sure we stayed! On looking at the menu, we decided we needed to leave and cancelled the drinks as we left she didn't try to ask if there was a problem or if she could assist in any way, just said ok. It spoilt Mother's Day. How anyone would want to eat there, I don't know!

We've eaten here before and it was fine - not brilliant, but our visiting friends like dining in the railway carriages and that was the reason for our visit. However... I'm not sure what went wrong today but it was one of the worst Sunday lunches we ever had. After waiting nearly 40 minutes, a very small half portion of overly salty soup arrived, delivered with a cold basic shop bought cheapo bread roll. We ordered Sunday roast and it was so bad it was comical. Again, such a small portion size that it looked like it was meant for a child. My single roast potato was the size of a brussel sprout! I had to ask for more and to be fair they did bring 2 more very small roast potatoes (lol!) but why was my meal even sent out like that in the first place? 2 small pieces of beef that were gone in about 6 mouthfuls. The food was only luke warm. We had intended having desserts as well but didn't bother after that. We are all for supporting local restaurants, but it just seemed today that this place has given up. The railway carriages are looking tired - the net curtains were filthy, for example! I don't think this place will be around for much longer if they carry on like this. We weren't the only ones. Another couple refused to pay. It wasn't nice to be sat there hearing other people complaining and the staff didn't seem bothered. We wouldn't go here again - there are far better places less than a mile away that do much better Sunday roasts.

Lovely place, very quaint and romantic and the food is fine but the service is incredibly slow. Seems slightly disorganized so you feel like you have been forgotten. Worth a trip though. The carriages are getting a little tired these days so it could do with a bit of maintenance. Decent amount of parking. Poor choice of ale and didnt serve bottles of prosecco which seemed odd.You probably need to go here before it is gone for good as the quirky carriages are definitely an experience.

We visited for a birthday treat and had pre booked the afternoon tea. The sandwiches and scones were lovely but we felt the cake choice wasn't great we had 3 flavoured cakes but they were all of a certain kind- ginger, fruit and another one not sure what it was I felt these were flavours that not many people would like. We felt the service wasnt that great we were offered no cutlery or serviettes. I don't feel the pub was overly busy to warrant the poor service. We did ask for a knife quite early on to cut the scones with but although we left this section until last we still never received the cutlery to use with the scones and after asking for extra tea this also took a long time to come we were about to leave to pay the bill as we had given up on it when it finally arrived. In comparison to other afternoon teas we would definitely pay the extra few pound for a better experience and selection. We used to come here alot but haven't been for a while we love the quirky carriages and historical side of the pub but I'm not in any hurry to return sadly

Booked for a valentines meal 14/02/25. Based on the photos on the website I was looking forward to the visit. Drove past the venue because the sign was poorly illuminated as was the pub itself, no sparkly lights. Upon entering the car park encountered a number of potholes. The car park had no lighting and could be challenging for some people. Walking to the pub I noticed a sign advertising the pub as an investment opportunity, and my fears were confirmed as we entered through the dimly lit vestibule. It was cold inside and I noticed customers wearing coats sitting at tables. We were shown to our seats in the train carriage which was beautifully nostalgic but had clearly seen better days. The staff were pleasant and helpful and food was brought to the table in due course. The menu selection was poor and the food itself did little to resemble the glorious offerings shown on the website. I can only conclude that our visit was ill timed during a period of uncertainty in the pubs future. I would like to think I would return but certainly not until whoever takes managerial helm addresses a lot of these problems .

We entered the pub and two staff were arguing about their roles and a flippant comment of I'll see to you in a bit was aimed in our direction. We were shown to our seats in the carriage which was chilly and we nearly tripped up on a heater. The food was absolutely atrocious. Greasy, mushy battered cod for me with mushy peas and chips looked like a greasy cafe meal but tasted much worse. My husband’s steak and ale pie had 4 small bits of steak inside . My grandchild had buttery mash which was exactly like packet 'Smash' , dry and not buttery. Overall the meal spoiled our Valentines lunch. It was one big disappointment and we will not be returning. Almost £60 wasted. If you want a nice meal go anywhere else but here.

Dripping with grease and looked revolting. Picture was taken after I had already tried to dab some grease off. This is the 3rd time we have been here for a meal. Always best to book as it can get pretty busy at the weekend. The 1st time we ate here it was amazing! Good service, good food and good atmosphere. The 2nd time was very different. The service was poor, the atmosphere felt tense and the food wasn't up to the same standard as last time, but the manager gave us a full refund and apologised. This time we booked a table of 4 in Ursula carriage. As we were dining with another family member. This is the carriage we prefer as its a more comfortable and cosier carriage. You can also book a table in the actual restaurant if you prefer. Service started quite poorly, as we waited at the door to be greeted and seated. Drinks order was taken straight away and they did take a little while to arrive but they did seem pretty busy. Food order was taken and food arrived pretty quickly. By this time we had broken the ice with the staff and they were very friendly and attentive. We had 3 courses and 2 rounds of drinks for 3 people. Food was fantastic and our guest loved the whole experience! It's an amazing pub/restaurant with the added quirkiness of the trains. The whole place (especially the trains) could do with an injection of cash to update it all as it would be a shame to see such a unique place close down as many pubs have in recent years. Pullman carriages need a bit of tlc on the outside but as a small business owner I can forgive this as times are tough and all the essentials were in place - food, service and value. I hope the new manager is able to get the carriages repainted outside as is the plan apparently. Outside of the train carriages the place appears to have been refurbished and love the area for kids as well - a great idea! Not sure if I went to the same restaurant as other people but I was extremely disappointed. Having been 7/8 yrs ago and had a great experience I booked a table for 4 to celebrate 2 birthdays. Upon first impressions the outside certainly needs some love as there was no kind of welcoming entrance, such as plants, lighting and in fact the doors look like some kind of Travelodge. Inside was fairly dark, but we had booked one of the carriages. We proceeded to the carriage, and I appreciate that these have an old-fashioned hue about them but they have clearly been left to deteriorate from my previous visit. From where I was sat, I could see dust and cobwebs along the wooden areas. I opened one of the windows to be met with more dust and cobwebs. And when I pulled back one of the curtains to open a further window (the carriage was very stuffy) I saw the aligned carriage which had certainly seemed better days externally to the point that it had black duct tape hanging off it. Our table had crumbs on it and when we went to the toilet, the sink was filthy. To be honest at this point, we did consider leaving as it was so dirty, but we decided the food would be the resounding feature. We had the two course lunchtime special and to be fair the first course was delicious. Admittedly smaller portions than if you had ordered from the main menu, but that’s to be expected for the price. We all had different desserts and they were below par. The Apple crumble had no flavour whatsoever, it was just pieces of warm apple (no sauce, no sugar, no flavour) under crumble top. The Eton mess was a small bowl of whipped cream, a measly scattering of berries on top and a smaller scattering of meringue on top of those. It wasn’t even mixed together. The banana split was pretty sad and the lemon meringue cheesecake was the best of the desserts and it was nice enough but not wow. They had no Pepsi or Coke in the restaurant at all which we found very strange for a pub/restaurant on a Saturday afternoon. The staff were not very professional, clearly not trained and the waitress proceeded to tell us how hot and sweaty she was as she cleared our plates away . All in all it was a bad experience, I was embarrassed as I had suggested this for a birthday meal . The whole place needs a complete refurbishment or at minimum a deep clean. Unfortunately, I would never return and I would not suggest anybody going to this place.

Arrived at The Spotgate at 6.55pm to be seated for 7pm. On going up to the steps of the carriage, paper printed menus thrust in our hands. Once seated asked what we'd like to drink. Drinks came straight away, no problem, food ordered. At approximately 7.35pm we got our starters, now correct me if I'm wrong but I thought goujons were strips ? I got lumps of soggy battered fish not the strips I'd imagined. My husband had the calamari which look over cooked heavily battered lumps, we ate it but it wasn't the best starter we've ever had. Plates got cleared after at around 7.55pm when my husband asked for another drink. I asked my 7yr old granddaughter if she'd like another coke, which she didn't, to which the waitress replied "oh ! how unusual a child refusing a drink!", well no, it's not unusual, if she doesn't want one then she doesn't want one. The table to the side of us whilst we were waiting had all three courses, then asked if the chairs were comfier in the bar. At 8.30 still no mains and granddaughter was getting hungry, so we asked if they were going to be much longer? The waitress said she'd see. She did come back and say we were next to be served. The table behind us then asked when they were going to be served having waited as long as we had. Within minutes their meal arrived with ourselves still waiting. By 8.55pm I had had enough, my granddaughter was now not just hungry but tired. We went to the bar and offered to pay for the drinks but not the starters, to be greated with "well your food is ready now" too little to late ! The male member of staff tried to justify the wait by saying they had had a big party in and that was why there was such a delay. That really isn't my problem, I don't expect to be eating my main meal 2hrs after sitting in a dark dingy carriage with nobody coming to us to explain or express there apologies for the wait. It's a shame really, they are really missing out on what could be a lovely dining experience. Tablecloths on the table would be a start. We took our granddaughter with us because she's Harry Potter mad, the carriage could have been an excellent experience for her but instead she left hungry and tired. I remember going to The Spotgate many years ago when the trampolines were out the back, packed every night , food and dining a great experience. What happened? NEVER AGAIN !!

Meal for 6 people. Waited over an hour with no apology or acknowledgment that either it was a busy kitchen or understaffed. Food was good but steak and burger were overcooked and not as ordered. Lovely venue on the train, just a shame about the slow service.

Went to celebrate my 70th birthday the first member of staff came in saying are you sure you have pre booked as the chef hasn’t got anything she wasn’t the most pleasant I said I had I have it on my phone before I could show her she disappeared no one came back to us then about 15 minutes later the starters came out I think she needs training in customer service the second waitress that served us was a lot more pleasant, all the food was good. On the whole it was a nice evening.

Booked here today for my birthday lunch. Have fond memories from eating here over the years. We arrived and no staff were to be seen. Waited 10 minutes for someone to come to us. The carriages are tired and it was very quiet for a Sunday Lunch. Food was very average. I love a roast beef dinner, this one was tasteless and the gravy like water. Feeling disappointed and won't be returning. As we entered the carriage 2 of the customers complained that their meal was stone cold which put us off.

Took advantage of the school summer holidays and to the children for a meal on a Pullman carriage. Service was polite and friendly, always with a smile. Food choices were good, either individual meals or a set meal. Drinks including cocktails are served at your table. The only slight disappointment with the visit was the length of time between courses. 3 course meal for 4 persons took 2 hours ..

The food overall was nice. However my mother who ordered a roast dinner became ill and sick all night ( it was the only thing she ate that day). I have a feeling it was the horseradish or the cream she had with her dessert. Another thing was the 2 courses for £17 which only included the roast dinner and a dessert (it didn't state this in the description). On a positive note the service and servers were brilliant and the building was lovley.

Just OK sadly….haven’t been for years and thought I would give it a try for a celebatory meal for my daughter. Carriages run down, flies around windows, carpets filthy. Menu is minimal but we were told on arrival that a lot of items were not available, which is bizarre, everything from pork loin to soup! Service lax, staff nice enough but unkempt. Main meals were OK, chips looked re heated on two of the meals, bit tasteless, brioche bun soggy, no meals were finished, at no point were we asked if all was OK either Desserts I’m told were nice Waited for 10 minutes to get the bill so went to find the staff who were chatting at the bar Such a shame that this once beautiful thriving restaurant is so run down The place was empty which is probably a sign that should have warned me to not cross the threshold I won’t be back, I’ll stick to Black Lake or Swynnerton where there is always a good meal to be had Disappointed and wishing I’d spent £80 somewhere else

We visited on Sunday 28th July 2024 at 1 oclock. We took advantage of the 3 course sunday lunch offer. The food that we had was lovely no real complaints. However the service was some what lacking. We ordered drinks and all the courses all at once but unfortunately it took almost an hour before we had our starters, all were very nice, another 35mins after we had finished to wait for the Sunday roast which we had items missing that were on the menu and had to ask for separately. Once we finished we sat around for 25 minutes before one of us found a member of staff to clear our table and ask for dessert. Again we waited 20 minutes for them to turn up. Now I don't normally moan about service staff because they do work hard and I can fully understand if the place was full and really busy, but on this occasion it wasn't it was a quiet Sunday with only a hand full of people actually dining. 8 cars on the carpark when we arrived. I have no issues with the food we had it was lovely but my experience has put me off from going again.

Absolute shocking service by staff who couldn't really be bothered. Food was okay, nothing flashy. We were taken to a carriage and they forgot we were there. Food came quickly but wrong food for one of us. Asked for dessert menu and got nothing so had to go and find them yet again. Disappointing.

Waitress had totally filthy footwear, big turn off, no manners, starter came before the drinks, had to ask about the drinks again, had ask for vinegar, no table check, food over priced and dry. Had ask more dill sauce for the salmon because it was so dry over 10 min wait. Very disappointing after reading the reviews, over £70 three starters and mains better food the night before at the weathervane definitely not returning Very poor !!!

I’m writing this review on behalf of my mum as she isn’t very good with technology…. She attended The Spotgate Inn on Saturday 6th July with the rest of the family to celebrate a couple of birthdays on the same day. Our meal was a little disappointing, the chips were lukewarm, the rice was stodgy and the plates were cold, also the decor was looking a little tired in one of the carriages and could do with a little bit of TLC. She posted a comment on one of their Facebook posts and it has been deleted and she has now been blocked from their page not how a company should conduct their business.

Sadly not what is used to be several years ago. Went for a special birthday occasion. Service was slow and appeared quite disorganised. The Sunday roast meal I had was dire. Fatty tuff beef, roast potatoes were black in the middle, most of the vegetables appeared to be of the frozen variety, very small portions. A flat, what was supposed to be, Yorkshire pudding and to top it off instant mashed potato. 5 out of the 10 of us had the 'roast' dinner and we all were left disappointed. Others who ordered other dishes off the menu said they were ok. I did not complain at the time as it was a gathering for a special birthday which may have ruined the afternoon. The area we were in was not very clean either. Cutlery was given to us for the starters wet in what looked like a dishwasher receptacle. We were though given clean dry cutlery for the main meals. We were also promised some birthday banners in the area, these were not present. Overall I cannot recommend and will certainly not be going back unless things drastically improve.

Disappointed....live in Hixon just 5 minutes down the road, and as it was local thought, we would try it for breakfast. Really disappointed with the service and food. We were in the small alcove and seemed to be forgotten about. Breakfast came, and some items were missing, I had no bacon and had to ask for butter for my toast. It was free coffee with your breakfast.... all other tables were being asked if they wanted top ups....we were ignored....had to ask for a refil. There was more coffee in the saucers than the cup. The only thing that came without asking was the bill. REALLY REALLY DISAPPOINTING 😞

My partner and I quite enjoy salmon for a main meal and was pleased when we saw it on the Harvester menu,so we traveled to our nearest one which was about 30 minutes away,on entry we were taken to a table and given the menus and ordered drinks and the salmon,we were then given a bowl to help yourself to salad which we did and sat down to eat it,we had just finished the salad when the waitress came to us and they hadn’t got any salmon and did we want to choose something else, the menu wasn’t very interesting but we chose the chargrilled chicken ,if we had known this when we ordered we would have just had the drinks and gone elsewhere,we had arrived at around 1-50 and it was now 2-40 when the meal was served, nothing special and looked more like a child’s portion, the was a table of 4 close by who were complaining about certain things missing and meals not available and a chap on his own who ordered fish and chips only to be told they hadn’t got any,the place wasn’t overly busy and I can see why, very poor.
