Arrived at The Spotgate at 6.55pm to be seated for 7pm. On going up to the steps of the carriage, paper printed menus thrust in our hands. Once seated asked what we'd like to drink. Drinks came straight away, no problem, food ordered. At approximately 7.35pm we got our starters, now correct me if I'm wrong but I thought goujons were strips ? I got lumps of soggy battered fish not the strips I'd imagined. My husband had the calamari which look over cooked heavily battered lumps, we ate it but it wasn't the best starter we've ever had. Plates got cleared after at around 7.55pm when my husband asked for another drink. I asked my 7yr old granddaughter if she'd like another coke, which she didn't, to which the waitress replied "oh ! how unusual a child refusing a drink!", well no, it's not unusual, if she doesn't want one then she doesn't want one. The table to the side of us whilst we were waiting had all three courses, then asked if the chairs were comfier in the bar. At 8.30 still no mains and granddaughter was getting hungry, so we asked if they were going to be much longer? The waitress said she'd see. She did come back and say we were next to be served. The table behind us then asked when they were going to be served having waited as long as we had. Within minutes their meal arrived with ourselves still waiting. By 8.55pm I had had enough, my granddaughter was now not just hungry but tired. We went to the bar and offered to pay for the drinks but not the starters, to be greated with "well your food is ready now" too little to late ! The male member of staff tried to justify the wait by saying they had had a big party in and that was why there was such a delay. That really isn't my problem, I don't expect to be eating my main meal 2hrs after sitting in a dark dingy carriage with nobody coming to us to explain or express there apologies for the wait. It's a shame really, they are really missing out on what could be a lovely dining experience. Tablecloths on the table would be a start. We took our granddaughter with us because she's Harry Potter mad, the carriage could have been an excellent experience for her but instead she left hungry and tired. I remember going to The Spotgate many years ago when the trampolines were out the back, packed every night , food and dining a great experience. What happened? NEVER AGAIN !!

Meal for 6 people. Waited over an hour with no apology or acknowledgment that either it was a busy kitchen or understaffed. Food was good but steak and burger were overcooked and not as ordered. Lovely venue on the train, just a shame about the slow service.

Booked here today for my birthday lunch. Have fond memories from eating here over the years. We arrived and no staff were to be seen. Waited 10 minutes for someone to come to us. The carriages are tired and it was very quiet for a Sunday Lunch. Food was very average. I love a roast beef dinner, this one was tasteless and the gravy like water. Feeling disappointed and won't be returning. As we entered the carriage 2 of the customers complained that their meal was stone cold which put us off.

Took advantage of the school summer holidays and to the children for a meal on a Pullman carriage. Service was polite and friendly, always with a smile. Food choices were good, either individual meals or a set meal. Drinks including cocktails are served at your table. The only slight disappointment with the visit was the length of time between courses. 3 course meal for 4 persons took 2 hours ..

The food overall was nice. However my mother who ordered a roast dinner became ill and sick all night ( it was the only thing she ate that day). I have a feeling it was the horseradish or the cream she had with her dessert. Another thing was the 2 courses for £17 which only included the roast dinner and a dessert (it didn't state this in the description). On a positive note the service and servers were brilliant and the building was lovley.

We visited on Sunday 28th July 2024 at 1 oclock. We took advantage of the 3 course sunday lunch offer. The food that we had was lovely no real complaints. However the service was some what lacking. We ordered drinks and all the courses all at once but unfortunately it took almost an hour before we had our starters, all were very nice, another 35mins after we had finished to wait for the Sunday roast which we had items missing that were on the menu and had to ask for separately. Once we finished we sat around for 25 minutes before one of us found a member of staff to clear our table and ask for dessert. Again we waited 20 minutes for them to turn up. Now I don't normally moan about service staff because they do work hard and I can fully understand if the place was full and really busy, but on this occasion it wasn't it was a quiet Sunday with only a hand full of people actually dining. 8 cars on the carpark when we arrived. I have no issues with the food we had it was lovely but my experience has put me off from going again.

Just OK sadly….haven’t been for years and thought I would give it a try for a celebatory meal for my daughter. Carriages run down, flies around windows, carpets filthy. Menu is minimal but we were told on arrival that a lot of items were not available, which is bizarre, everything from pork loin to soup! Service lax, staff nice enough but unkempt. Main meals were OK, chips looked re heated on two of the meals, bit tasteless, brioche bun soggy, no meals were finished, at no point were we asked if all was OK either Desserts I’m told were nice Waited for 10 minutes to get the bill so went to find the staff who were chatting at the bar Such a shame that this once beautiful thriving restaurant is so run down The place was empty which is probably a sign that should have warned me to not cross the threshold I won’t be back, I’ll stick to Black Lake or Swynnerton where there is always a good meal to be had Disappointed and wishing I’d spent £80 somewhere else

I’m writing this review on behalf of my mum as she isn’t very good with technology…. She attended The Spotgate Inn on Saturday 6th July with the rest of the family to celebrate a couple of birthdays on the same day. Our meal was a little disappointing, the chips were lukewarm, the rice was stodgy and the plates were cold, also the decor was looking a little tired in one of the carriages and could do with a little bit of TLC. She posted a comment on one of their Facebook posts and it has been deleted and she has now been blocked from their page not how a company should conduct their business.

Sadly not what is used to be several years ago. Went for a special birthday occasion. Service was slow and appeared quite disorganised. The Sunday roast meal I had was dire. Fatty tuff beef, roast potatoes were black in the middle, most of the vegetables appeared to be of the frozen variety, very small portions. A flat, what was supposed to be, Yorkshire pudding and to top it off instant mashed potato. 5 out of the 10 of us had the 'roast' dinner and we all were left disappointed. Others who ordered other dishes off the menu said they were ok. I did not complain at the time as it was a gathering for a special birthday which may have ruined the afternoon. The area we were in was not very clean either. Cutlery was given to us for the starters wet in what looked like a dishwasher receptacle. We were though given clean dry cutlery for the main meals. We were also promised some birthday banners in the area, these were not present. Overall I cannot recommend and will certainly not be going back unless things drastically improve.

Pleasant staff, and a quaint setting…sadly the food was a huge disappointment - completely devoid of any flavour. The lasagne was grey in colour and even less inspiring in flavour, even after adding plenty of seasoning myself. My partner’s choice of fish and chips was seemingly an easy win. Sadly, the fish didn’t taste of anything. Nothing at all. Quite remarkable. Our chips were so dry, we assumed they’d been prepared in the Sahara during drought season. Needless to say, we won’t return.

Great place for a meal . Have offers through out the week £12 for 2 courses £16 for 3 courses. There are tables inside, two old train coaches but be warned it’s very nice to sit in them for meals but you need to be quite slim to do so . There are other places to sit . It wasn’t to busy but.would still prebook. Staff were friendly . There quite a variety on the menu . There were so old traditional puddings available like banana split and chocolate fudge cake with mint custard that we were pleased about . I had lasagna it was a bit dry as been over microwaved but was nice . I would go back . There is a free car park on a bank . Quite easy to miss the turning for the car park . Each of us spent £20 for 2 courses and a drink. It was great for a catch-up and a chat . We stayed for 3 hours . Wouldn’t be able to do this at the weekend as it gets quite busy from what staff were saying.

Came a couple of weeks ago, had booked a table and had brought friends who were visiting. On the telephone the person was very helpful and friendly. I did book a table outside of the trains as there were 6 of us, but we were placed on 2 tables across from each other in the 'economy/standard' carriage. The rest of my party said they were fine, but in hindsight I wished we had moved. My seat was ripped and barely taped back together and it was difficult to hold a conversation across the gangway. Our starters were nice, but we were asked if we wanted cutlery, well, yes please. The server returned with our starter cutlery and then almost slung our main course cutlery on the table for us to hand out to each other. I went down to the bar to get napkins. Our main courses were a mix of very good, ok and 1 dish was quite poor. My daughter's sausages did look a bit like cheap chip shop ones and again in hindsight and feeling very bad about this, I wished I had not let her eat them. She was poorly later that night. I cannot 100% say if it was this, but the pieces do unfortunately seem to fit and I have learned my lesson. At any other time I would have absolutely asked to speak to a manager and would have complained or at least shared our experience, but I felt completely and utterly embarrassed with having our friends with us who had come to visit. I did not want to shed more light on our poor experience and I felt responsible. I did walk down to the bar a couple of times to see if there was a manager or someone to speak to, but it just seemed really disjointed with no one obvious in charge. I was also trying to do this discreetly away from the rest of our party. Overall I was just really disappointed and very embarrassed. I'd looked at three venues in total and chose this one as I thought the menu read well and we had previously had some good meals here (although quite a while ago). Local friends had also recommended it and the reviews read well, so I am still very surprised at our experience. I must say that one young lady who served us was so polite, friendly and helpful, but the others werrather abrupt and quite unprofessional, there was a lack of care and attention. Outside was really untidy with weeds and just seemed uncared for. I was planning on returning for 2 birthday celebrations, but have since been to another venue down the road which was a much more positive experience, and I wish we had taken our friends there instead. It is very rare that I leave poor reviews. I love to celebrate our local businesses of all kinds and if I did have a negative experience I would aim to speak or email the venue or business first. I did therefore email the Spotgate the day after our visit to raise these issues as I think feedback is important, which as I said I would always aim to do before leaving a review. However, I have never heard back.

There were bulbs missing from light shades and cobwebs on the ceilings. On the table was a half hearted attempt at some twinkling lights in a wine bottle that didn’t work! The paper menus handed to us were had greasy finger marks over them, they were crease and just tatty. Just felt like it needed a deep clean. The staff were friendly and attentive. We had food from the 2 course lunch menu £11.95. It was not great below average. The lasagne was dry, burnt and a tiny portion. I suppose you get what you pay for! Terrible service, left waiting at the front desk for 15 minutes then seated but left waiting for a drink for 20 minutes. Won't be visiting again to say the least.

We had the 2 course offer and the food was lovely especially the mint custard on my chocolate fudge cake. We have been a few time over the years and always forget how beautiful the carriages are. A relaxed atmosphere with great service. Definitely worth a visit.

As usual the ambiance of the Spot Gate Railway carriage was wonderful. We introduced a couple of friends to the restaurant. Unfortunately one of our friends had a gammon steak, which she said was extremely salty. We mentioned this to our waitress when she asked if we had enjoyed our meals. Her response was somewhat subdued " oh" . That was the last we heard about it. No apology etc. I realise that times have been difficult recently, however, having eaten at the Spotgate many times in the past, it seems that standards are slipping. I do hope this is a blip and not a sign of things to come.

Last night 4 of us came and had our meal in one of the compartment carriages which was lovely. However, we felt that the service wasn’t great and that there were a few things which let our experience down. When we first arrived they had our booking under a different name so there was confusion as to whether it was actually our booking our not so one of the members of staff had to go and get someone else to clarify this. Once we were sat down our drinks were taken and it took quite a long time for 4 drinks to be brought to the table, to the point we had to ask about where they were and someone had to chase them up. Our starters came and they were lovely but, when our main courses arrived they had completely forgotten about 1 of the party members food and again we had to go and ask about this. We were told that it had been missed off the list and therefore, we then had to wait for their meal to be cooked which was very annoying and disappointing seeing as the rest of us had gotten more than half way through our meals once it had arrived. We had a nice time but, there was never just 1 designated member of staff to a table and therefore we felt we kept having random members of staff coming up to us and each of them not knowing if we had ordered drinks or food etc due to lack of communication. We enjoyed our visit but if we had to give any feedback it would be that we felt there wasn’t enough waiting staff on to accommodate the number of guests in the restaurant and this made the experience not live up to the expectations as it is such a nice restaurant. It was a shame and we probably wouldn’t be in a rush to return

We booked in February for my mums 60th birthday, in the private room where the lady on the phone said she would decorate the room for us. We rang on the 8th of March to confirm the number of people attending. All ok. We arrived last night all 12 of us, to "we have no booking for you" We thought they were joking, but no. There was no booking made and they made no attempt to fit us in and even said the chef hasn't got enough food for us and basically couldn't be bothered to amend there wrong doing. Completely spoilt the start of my mums birthday celebrations. Our family will NOT consider this "establishment" again its run by rude amateurs! Thank god for the Black lake!! AVOID THE SPOTGATE!

Food was amazing. Had the 2 courses for £11.95... homemade delicious food. 1 of us had a starter. Breaded goats cheese. For mains. 1 had lasagne. 3 of us had burger. All came with salad and chips. Then 3 of us had desserts..2 had apple crumble+custard...homemade again..and 1 had knickerbocker glory...plenty of ice cream in it...teenagers had cocktails. I had a cocktail...really nice..only 1 guy doing everything. He worked really well. Held the Fort brilliantly. Very pleasant. We sat in 1 of the train carriages which was a great experience. We will definitely go back again.

No prawns for the prawn cocktail. Pea and mint fritters were actually cheap and nasty veggie gingers straight from the freezer. Few peas, no mint, largely carrots and sweet corn. Frozen chips. Only 5 pieces of scampi. One meal of 5 was missed and came later. Overall, not good. Best dish was the homemade broccoli and Stilton soup.

We booked for a celebration - a 70th birthday party but were very disappointed at both the service and food. Service was incredibly slow, despite the fact we'd pre-ordered. Food was no better than average. My vegetable lasagne contained no vegetables, food had clearly been microwaved and my husband's chicken burger had no sauce (as described in the menu). We were refunded for those 2 meals but that didn't help the fact a celebration was slightly tainted by the poor quality and service. We won't be back.

We visited this evening and were left very disappointed. Having seen the adverts we decided to give it a go! Upon arrival, lovely lady showed us to our carriage and we chose our food. I had ‘crispy Pork Belly’ that was not crispy, tough as a leather boot and was re-heated leaving the meat with that horrid taste. The mash was microwaved and really not good. The cod and chips, well very little cod and chips that had no filling they were that old and dry. The burger was okay but again, not the best. A really disappointing visit and sadly we won’t be returning. Cooking fresh food is always the way forward, trying to re-heat food and serving it like this is not good and will cause many issues in the future. Sorry but it was awful!

Sadly this was a disappointing event. I felt genuinely sorry for the staff who were all quite obviously overwhelmed. We waited over an hour and a half to be seated. We did get drinks prior to being shown our table but only because we fetched our own, we were offered drinks whilst waiting in the bar, but an order was never taken. On to the food, so disappointing! Out of a party of 10, not one had a meal that appeared to have been freshly made, all main items were frozen and cooked, mass production items. Before our visit I'd had high hopes that the menu would offer more bespoke culinary delights but our expectations were nowhere near met. On a plus, although over worked and quite obviously stressed the staff were friendly, pleasant and somewhat apologetic
