The Sportsman in Bristol, City of

Used to frequent here back in my college/uni days and it's not really changed all these years later. Lots of pool tables, good pizzas and beer/cider. Not sure if they still show live football games but imagine they do.

Lovely, friendly pub with great pizzas and burgers. 8 pool tables, darts, dog friendly and 2 pubs, main pub sportsman and an annexe pub with a friendly more family vibe, 2 beer gardens and friendly staff. Come check this pub out! 👍🏽

A real great hidden but not so hidden pub on Gloucester Road! Always a nice atmosphere and nice staff on the bar. Only tried the burgers and can say they’re the best burgers I’ve ever had. Fair play to Fattso! Can’t wait to go back in the summer and experience the outside seating!

Used to be a great pool pub, new owners don’t care about pool and swapped all the normal wooden pool cues for light plastic children’s cues, can hardly have a game with them. Looks like they got some gentrified overpriced burgers in too and bos finesse to make a silly instagram video so I’m sure it is in full decline now. Was fun while it lasted - used to play there a lot but won’t bother again.

Fantastic pub in a great location. Superb for watching any sport.

Popped in on my way home and had a pint of Butcombe Original. Enjoyed it so much I had another! Good beer and friendly service is what a good pub is all about.

Empty. Many screens but only 1 event on offer. Beer sour. Place needs shake up.

Simply put a great pub. Lots of pool tables, easy to get one during the week or arrive early on the weekend. Affordable pints and great pizzas with deals in the week. Lots of TV screens for watching sports which shows all the main games live. Great outdoor area for smoking, drinking and watching sports on the big TV. Great annexe area for even more seating. Music selection is always really good here, never generic pop music. Darts boards upstairs.

Great pizza a must have when you go

A top quality pub', somewhere for everyone to sit, stand, drink or play. The Manager and his crew are the best, always charming and friendly, the food is always fresh and tasty

Always happy with the sportsman. Pool is £1 and the tables are decent. There are 9 pool tables available, 6 downstairs and 3 upstairs. The bar is good, nice selection and reasonably priced. I've had pizza here a few times and it's alway been good. The gents are not the best.. but manageable.

One of our favourite Bristol sports pubs. Large TVs in the pub, in the beer 'Annex' and in the covered courtyard. The range and quality of the real ales are second to none anywhere else. Pub food is excellent and the Sportsman's pizzas particularly (which you can order to take away) are better than we've been served in many professional pizzarias. In these days when so many lovely pubs are closing The Sportsman shows how a pub has moved with the times offering what its community wants. Highly recommended.

Whent their last week to play pool

Not been here in many years and am pleased to say that the place hasn't changed, its still as good as it ever was.

A shadow of its former glories, now a soulless place with staff who literally had little or no customer service skills, certainly no appreciation of what's going on around them..... such a shame!!

Great place to grab a beer and play some pool

The lady who was serving me when I ordered a pizza was extremely rude for no reason when wanting to order and demanded us to locate a table number when we said wanted to sit down right next to the bar anyway. My friend decided on a pizza in which I changed by letting her know I’d like this one instead. She then charges us for pizzas by mistake which we noticed, I then let her know we wanted 1 pizza and began to be extremely rude again to stormed off when we asked for a refund. The manager comes out and explains to us we was being rude and said we was swearing at her her which was all false accusations. I ask the manager to check the CCTV and she laughs at me to check for what. Overall really poor experience from the two members of staff, usually really nice to play pool but not sure if these two workers had a bit too much sun and were sour.

Loads of pool tables, good condition and well priced.

Filthy glasses, mouldy place. Keep away of you have asthma and / or hygiene standards!

Great pub close to Bristol Rovers which welcomes away fans. Screens showing the live match around the pub. Loads of pool tables in the back room which proved popular. Friendly welcome by the staff. Would definitely recommend to any visiting fans!

Went to play pool, tables in really good condition, cues were too. Nice service, IPL on the TV..... What's not to like?!

Brilliant pub with fantastic pizzas and good pool

Nice pub and staff but can draw in the kind of crowd you'd expect from a sports bar. Have had some odd experiences. Consider going with a group.

Great pub if you want to play pool! Has about 7 tables. Not sure about drink prices, I only went there to play pool with my girlfriend.

Great place to eat and drink. Bar staff are top level, Lilly looked after us all night and made the whole day that much better.

Nice little find, to enjoying a drink before the rover game, just a shame if you got children as there not aloud to use the pool area, failing any signs and after our 3rd game we were told my 12y old going on 15 years was not aloud to play pool, he was with his mum and dad not Messing around and enjoying a game he loves, ( new manager rules apparenty) so that cut our stay short shame really as it was the perfect for us to watch the footie and food prior to the rovers game!

Can’t go wrong with the Sporty. Reasonably priced drinks for the area and one of the best pizzas in Bristol. Great if you want to catch the football.

Good place to go and play pool or snooker, starting to look a bit run down now though.

First time there and WHAT a pub! Aptly named. Big screen and many others for ALL the sports!!!! Plenty of pool tables. A friend and I played a few games early Saturday afternoon, jukebox is free till 3pm. Premiership football on one screen and The Ryder Cup on another and the big screen. A big screen out in the beer garden. Huge and spacious seating areas, plenty of room and pool tables. Fusball table is also free. Haven't eaten there yet but I will definitely be going back. Staff were helpful and obliging, looking after the cues in between service Nd a nice selection of on the tap including Birra Moretti Nd Amstel and Guinness.

Good pub. Nice atmosphere and garden area. Food was excellent and good value. Big up to the chef Eva. UPDATE. Amazing Sunday Lunch. Great value excellent service and could watch the Ryder cup. Big up to the kitchen staff, Eva, Lucas and Betty.

Such a friendly pub. Average prices for pints and cheap DE-LI-CIOUS pizzas! Dog friendly and with plenty of space and tvs to watch sports. Always full of the lovely members of the community. Always a pleasure to go there ❤️

First visit for me, I had a nice pint and a couple of games of pool. They have lots of tables and it was a nice friendly atmosphere.

A great place to play pool, good atmosphere and helpful staff, food was good with places to eat around the tables, but is showing its age a bit.

This pub has gone to the dogs…although they don’t allow dogs in the pub itself! the miserable landlady has them herself on the premises. The food here used to be value for money, now it’s just soggy pizza. Pool tables are shoddy and not looked after, with disgusting toilets being used by recreational drug users daily Staff seem miserable and unhappy to be there or do anything about it Seems the miserable management have run it into the ground Wickwar should get in there and revamp this place. The atmosphere has gone from this pub

Supposedly a designated away pub, and admittedly is the first pub this side of The Memorial Ground without staff on the door. Not many others seem to have read the same reviews as us, but friendly, welcoming staff, and very good beer... What else could you want? I'm certainly not going to complain about not having to queue six deep, and wait half an hour to be served... Did I mention fast service? Parking is a bit first come, first served, but if we're still in the same division, I'll be back next season, and there's no higher praise than that!

It's a decent place to hang and enjoy an evening. I'm not a big drinker i just go to play pool and socialise with friends but every time I've been in there it's been lively and had nice atmosphere. The staff are friendly and the food is decent well above your normal pub food. (Would recommend the 🍕 its decent.) There is a beer garden shared with the other part of the pub more quiet sit down pub type. The main bar area is full of pool tables (more upstairs to) a few dart boards and a table football. Few big screen tvs with sports and main games when on.

Really good local pub, great for sports both on the TVs in bar areas and close to both Bristol Rovers and the cricket ground. Pizzas are excellent only bettered by the friendly staff.

Nice pub, good to watch football, rugby or the golf. Good selection of drinks. Haven't tried the pizzas yes but heard they are great

Big pub with loads of space inside and out. I'd say it's got a slightly intimidating atmosphere at first but overall a good spot. They don't have a good selection of beers on tap which let's them down but there are a load of pool tables and dart boards which is the main plus! Also the pizza is surprisingly good

What a delicious! steak and ale stew, plus good old fashioned mash pot. Very very good ! Served up at just the right hot food temp. -- as others don't at times these days, who serve food not heated through and lose that zippy tastiness for the food also. But just the job here though, for lovely winter time stew. What a nice suprise as I was not even planning to stop here for food. But thought it would be worth it, as ending up here on a walk. ... Very much can recommend The Sportsman, -off Gloucester Rd in Bishopston, near the Prison and Sainsbury's, down Nevil Rd opposite -, on this experience and ... great to find on Boxing Day in the neighbourhood here open and opening at 12 midday on the dot. Excellent!! all round & many thanks.

Only spent about an hour there while in Bristol. Friendly atmosphere. Polite staff. Good food. Good amenities. Seemed like what a local pup used to be 👍
