The Sporting Chance in Carmarthenshire

Went for dinner with family - the steaks were delicious and perfectly cooked. From the outside the pub looks a bit innocuous but great chef and lovely friendly staff.

recently had a sunday lunch but was disappointed it was only lukewarm and tasteless i would not recommend and would not go there again.

Don't judge a book by it's cover! Outside may look in need of uplift, however the place is Firnedly- obliging - food quality and presentation very good!

We found this place online and decided to book based on all the good reviews. Everything was perfect from the moment we arrived, the staff were friendly and attentive. The place was clean and well presented, the food was lovely. We will definitely return.

Wow! Fab food! Onion rings so big and crispy chips! Our 5 grandchildren aged 5-16 voted it their favourite meal of the week and my little grandson woofed down chef's lovely chicken curry. The fish has a lovely batter and I had the creamy garlic chicken, I could have eaten it twice and my son said the same about his taverners chicken, it was so delicious! Puddings lovely too, would recommend their lemon mousse or double chocolate brownie with ice cream. Our waitress Christine was so kind to the grandchildren and chef came out to check our meals were ok. Both lovely ladies who complimented our children and grandchildren on their good behaviour. We all wish we had discovered the Sporting Chance earlier, we would have happily eaten there every night! Thank you from the 3 generations of the Potter family who came last Thursday 1st June. We couldn't find anywhere for an evening meal we were staying at Pendine Sands holiday park but the restaurant there wasn't serving food ( short staffed !!! ) and theres literally no where else there to go unless you just want to sit drinking all evening, so we googled places nearby and one of the places came up which was the Sporting Chance in Red Roses so I phoned up and asked if they were still serving food at this time which was 7.45pm she said yes we serve until 8.30pm we told her we were 4 adults and a child said we would be 10 minutes and she said see you soon, we were pleasantly surprised when we walked into this pub it was absolutely lovely and very spacious the lady we spoke to on the phone served us too and she was so welcoming we ordered our food and we weren't waiting too long when it came we all had different meals and they were all delicious we would 100% visit here again if we are down that way.

Came here on the off chance as it was nearby, not expecting much as pub looks a bit run down outside, but so glad we did. Unexpected beautiful fresh food, superbly presented. Staff friendly & engaging. Will definitely return!

We've now dined at the Sporting Chance twice over the last few weeks. It really is a great little pub. The food certainly is a cut above the usual Castell Howell rubbish that is served in West Wales. I've had the Chicken and Chorizo starter and the Asian Salmon main twice now. It really does stand out from regular pub grub. The service is excellent. Staff are very polite professional but bothered about whether you're happy. We'll be back.

Came here by chance in January whilst staying in Pendine. We couldn't find many places to eat and wanted a special night as it was my daughters 6th birthday. It was quiet at that time as it was late and out of season but the kitchen was open. The pub has a great layout, full of unusual items which my daughter loved. My son was particularly stressed (he wanted Mcdonalds), but the owners were really friendly and most importantly patient with us. The food was excellent and the kids loved it.... even converted my son away from mcdonalds for the evening. Will definitely return when we are next in the area.

Absolutely outstanding food at the Sporting Chance this evening... Food was served all hot and nice sized portions. Great friendly staff and a warm welcome. Highly recommended! 20/10

Loverly Sunday dinner, 2 courses for £20, We couldn't fault the food it was full of flavour. The ladies serving us made sure we had everything we needed even with our dog. The upside down cake was also amazing. Thank you for a beautiful dinner on easter sunday x

What a welcome out-of-season find in wintry Carmarthenshire. Cheery services and one of the best Cod & Chips supper ever!

Where do I start! Second time to visit and the food once again was absolutely amazing. The welcome you receive from Chloe, Isham and the regulars is 2nd to none, it was perfect. The mushroom and garlic chicken melted in your mouth, cheesy garlic bread was seriously one of the best I've ever tasted. The Sunday lunch and cheesecake, wow so delicious. So impressed with this place and cannot wait to visit again. Full marks, diolch yn Fawr iawn xxx

With friends at home , fancied a Sunday roast without the need to go out . Made contact with this business for the very first time and order was placed with friendly lady for collection . Sunday roast was served with all the usual vegetables , roast potatoes , cauliflower cheese , stuffing . Absolutely beautiful! As I’ve said above I’ve never visited before , but for sure will be back for a meal & drinks !

Absolutely lovely pub, very clean and friendly landlord and landlady. Great service and brilliant karaoke nights. Highly recommend. 10/10

We visited here for Sunday lunch, the staff are great, the bar area is very welcoming, but the food is excellent. The meats were cooked to perfection, juicy and full of flavour! We can’t recommend here enough!

Fair play credit where its due, the restaurant is lovely, staff very warming and the Sunday Dinner was something else, we try and visit somewhere new for Sunday dinner most Sundays and this was a great find will be back again, kids loved it too

We (4 of us) stayed locally and needed somewhere to dine one evening. This place was local and had good reviews so we thought we’d try it. On arrival, it looks like an ordinary local pub however a different experience once inside. The landlady Chloe greeted us warmly, served our drinks and took us to our table. The place is clean and comfortable and has a good vibe. However what really stood out was the food - it was absolutely top notch. This was so much more than pub grub. And the service was excellent. Totally recommend!

We were staying in a nearby area for the past week, and we drove past the pub a number of times, wondering what it'd be like for food, as it was so convenient... From the outside it doesn't look too big or special, but the inside was spacious, beautifully decorated, and we had a very warm welcome (thanks Chloe! Particularly patient with my brother who has special needs)!The menu was messaged to us prior to our visit, so we could pre-order, to save time in person (covid measure), which was a brilliant idea! Food was delicious, great price, very generous portions, and the puddings were superb!

From an outward appearance this place appears nothing out of the ordinary,but once you venture inside it’s anything but ordinary!The pub has good Covid procedures in place,but at the same time still had a warmth and friendliness which is down to the staff.The food was really tasty and wholesome,my wife and I had the steak and salmon between us and both were delicious. Only sadness was we found this place too late in our hols to be able to go again. Would highly recommend trying it.

We went to the sporting chance on a Thursday evening after being unable to get in and make use of the Eat our to help out due to them being fully booked. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. They also set up a brilliant system where you could let them know your order ahead of time which limits time you spend in the public area during the current COVID-19 situation. The food was exceptional value for money and better than any of the other local pubs that we had tried. I truly can’t recommend this establishment enough.

Had a really great meal at the Sporting Chance. The sirloin steak was very tender and cooked to perfection. My wife had the fillet strips which were just as good. The staff and management were really attentive. Great to see people trying so hard in these difficult times to provide great service.Well worth a visit

Stopped here for lunch today. The food was delicious and homemade. I had the lasagne and my husband had the steak. The owners were very friendly and welcoming. We will definitely return

My husband, our youngest son, daughter, granddaughter and myself thoroughly enjoyed a really lovely meal for my birthday. Piping hot, very tasty meals for us all. Good service,comfortable and relaxing atmosphere, definitely recommend anytime.

If you’re looking for a place with great food, family friendly atmosphere, with a very reasonable price this is a place I would 100% recommend! We were sat at a table where we could see the chef cooking our food, and we all commented about how much care was put into making it and how seasoned and tasty everything was. The owner - Chloe was lovely and welcoming making the environment relaxed which in my opinion is a must when eating out with young children! Not to mention we were a group of 9 with a 2 month old, a 9 month old and a 3 year old and we didn’t even pre book! If we ever come here on holiday again without a doubt we’d all return happily! Thanks for a great meal :)

This is one of the best dinners we have it’s amazing. The children (both being dairy free and catered for) always enjoy their dinner which is one of the biggest compliments ever as one can be very fussy. Patient with the children as one with special needs and a amazing couple who have turned this place into home from home, it’s like one big family.

Fabulous home cooked food, friendly staff and comfortable surroundings. So glad we chose here, can't recommend highly enough :)

Was recomended this pub by our guest house host so we called in midweek for an evening meal. We had not booked a table but as it was early evening we had no problem being seated. Ordered our drinks at the bar and our food at the table.There was 4 or 5 tables of two people and a larger party of about 8 or 9. The food came after about 35 mins.I had Steak and ale pie with new potatoes and vegetables and it was delicious,my wife had chicken in a white sauce with mushrooms and jacket potato and she said it was nice.I noticed other food going out such as the Fish and chips and the fish looked huge.There,s loads of room between the tables so your not crammed in.Would not hesitate to return as it appears the food is cooked to order which I believe improves the taste.

Popped in on Monday the 15th as we were staying at Rose Cottage, Hazel Grove Farm, had a couple of drinks, friendly little pub, quiet. Visited again on the Wednesday and we both had cod and chips with a side salad, all freshly cooked, bloody lovely. We called in again Thursday evening, my husband had gammon egg and chips, I had burger and chips again lovely, compliments to the chef. Lovely little pub, staff very friendly and welcoming, well worth a visit

Unplanned visit just happened to be passing called in for a drink but then thought we would have Sunday lunch so hadn’t booked this was no problem to the staff who were very friendly we only waited five minutes and the food arrived excellent quality and plenty of it and for the price £8.95 couldn’t fault it will definitely be going back also noted very clean and tidy pub

Took a chance on our May holiday near Narberth and drove to the Sporting Chance, a pub in Red Roses. What a good choice! Chose Taverners chicken and also salmon with sweet chilli stir fried vegetables. It was amazing! Worth a return visit! In fact, returned the next night to the Sporting Chance and chilled out to the country and western music there. This time had a battered cod and also a very juicy rump steak. Returned for a third and final time to the Sporting Chance where I had salmon stir-fry again and my husband had a steak, yet another excellent meal. The landlord and landlady are a lovely couple, very talented chefs.

We were staying very near on holiday so popped in for dinner one night. Service was good and very welcoming. Main courses were really nice, desserts were disappointing and just tasted as though they didn’t have enough sugar in them. I would visit again. Very hospitable.

Lovely Sunday Lunch here over the New Year, proper Home cooked Sunday lunch including cauliflower cheese my favourite!!! Vegetables were delicious and coated with rich butter, cannot fault this for a pub meal.

A fantastic local Bar and Restaurant. Children and Dog friendly, Simple menu but great food. Staff very helpful, well worth a visit on your travels around West Wales

Early evening meal for two after a Friday Carmarthen Shopping day ( Red Roses being on the old route home to Saundersfoot )Followed this up with a Sunday lunch catch up with friends... excellent service great value tasty beef and I think it was 7 veg we had —- all fresh —— also starter courses were good.... My photo’s are limited as many people don’t like inclusion/intrusion Go here for pleasant atmosphere and good food and drinks at reasonable prices

Don’t know if we came on an off day. On reading reviews made a special visit here when staying nearby. I had the beef lasagne with garlic bread. The bread was a ciabatta I think done in oven, but it had been in too long and was very hard at the ends. Lasagne was ok. Meagre salad portion though. Better if came with some chips too. We waited a long time for the food to arrive too. On a plus note dogs are allowed in the bar area but I recall only one table and chairs for eating. There was a high table with stools too.

On a few days break visited on the off chance, and very suprised to find a quiet restaurant. The service was very prompt and the food was hot, and delicious. Couldn't fault it. The staff very friendly. Made for a lovely evening.

This is a new business and needs to be given a chance. Not long opened, the food was good. Went with a coach party so it took a while to serve everyone. The food was hot and fresh.

A group of us went here for an evening meal.Staff was so lovely and friendly and the food was amazing real chips too.There was seven of us and all our food came together it was piping hot and delicious.Three of us had dessert and they was amazing food and desserts lovely big portions.This will always be our place to eat while in tenby/tavernspite.

A nice place to visit if you are staying along the Pembroke coast. This eatery is a couple of miles in land but easy accessible and serves a great selection of food from steaks fish etc. We did thoroughly enjoy what was delivered and will return

We booked a table for the Moroccan night held last Friday. What a treat, different but, delicious food. It was a buffet with a choice of several starters, a load of different dishes for main course a load of fruit and unusual deserts. what a great night!

We went to the Morrocan themed night last night. It was a £9.95 for a buffet menu of traditionally Morrocan foods cooked by Hitcham and his brother. Absolutely delicious! Even the Harisa - extremely hot - made me want to eat more, even though my mouth was on fire lol. Fantastic friendly service. Can't recommend this pub/restaurant enough. Well done all 5*

Absolutely stunning, food was beautiful, amazing atmosphere, actually felt like I was abroad. Chloe and hicham have made this previously boring run of the mill pub into truly something special. Massive congratulations both you should be very proud

3 of us called in for early evening meal - very enjoyable, seated and served promptly - ample portions - chilli was excellent as was the taverners chicken and chicken curry . Staff very attentive and checked we were happy with everything - well done to all the staff- would we eat here again - oh yes .

Popped in here based on previous tripadvisor review and was not disappointed. The steak I had was excellent and cooked perfectly for me, the peppercorn sauce was fantastic and unlike some I have had recently was nice and thick. Nicola had the salmon stir fry which again was very well cooked. We had cheesecake and apple crumble for dessert and both were excellent. The chap behind the bar was polite and friendly and the waitress was also friendly and engaging. We had our dog with us so we ate in the bar area which was fine, there were some very comfy looking leather sofas in the lounge area.

Fast service great food . A brilliantly well run all round pub my family was made very welcome will be returning soon

Following a first visit since re-opening we were pleasantly surprised at the quality not just the food but the whole `feel` of the place ,bright and fresh with keen and friendly staff.We both had the same dish on our first visit , Gammon and although usually a pub menu staple its easy to do badly . Ours was perfect, well cooked and served with a side salad and real chips it was exactly what we were hoping for .All in all , excellent . We will visit again. Thank you

On a wet and very windy night we called in on the off chance to have a meal as other local pubs were either closed or fully booked. The pub was warm and nicely decorated. The menu was varied with a good choice. We had a very good steak and ale pie and the fish and chips for our mains. There was a super choice of home made puddings so I had the Baileys bread and butter pudding with custard. The food was well cooked and nicely presented. We got chatting to the owner Chloe afterwards and it turned out they had only been there for five days. It seems that the new owners work hard and are keen to make a success of this local pub. If we are on holiday in the area again we wouldn't hesitate to go back for a meal and to recommend to others.

What can we say, just fantastic!! We are locals and we were really looking forward to “The Chance “ being reopened. We called in for a drink the first time round and had a lovely, warm welcome from Chloe and Hicham. We have now been for food a few times and certainly not been disappointed!! We’ve had starters, steaks, chicken dishes, all cooked to perfection, not forgetting the yummy deserts :) Highly recommend The Sporting Chance, well done both :) :)

Acknowledged upon entry by the busy bar person... who pleasantly attended to our needs while we awaited our friends... table was prebooked... the menu choices were sufficient for a pub restaurant... each meal was served timely .... very well presented and was very tasty indeed we had all agreed We were surprised that, considering the welcome the service and the food quality, this pub restaurant was not really busy for a Saturday evening ... however, it has not long reopened following a lengthy closure period and has yet to rebuild a clientele base This should not take long in our experience of our evening Thank you and good luck for the future

We visited with our 3 young daughters. Wonderful welcome, nothing was too much trouble, the food was fantastic and incredible value for money! Cannot wait to go back! Thanks guys.xx
