The Southsea Deli in Portsmouth

I attended the South Coast Cookery workshop at the Southsea Deli on Thursday 7th November. This was the Asian Street Food workshop at which Daniel taught us to make Vietnamese meatballs and Summer rolls. Daniel is an excellent teacher and creates a great atmosphere. The setup at the Deli is great. Small enough to be intimate but accommodates enough people (10) to make it feel nice and sociable. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and cooked some really great food which I will definitely make again. The best meatballs I have ever made for sure!

We recently hired Southsea Deli for a family and friends birthday get-together Daniel provided a three course supper menu which was a total delight. He and his staff served wine and the delicious food throughout the evening in such a totally relaxed and seamless way that they were almost invisible to the guests. It is a skill not everyone has. Everybody enjoyed a wonderful evening and can't wait to revisit at their earliest opportunity. A big thankyou to Dan, Luke and Albert for making our special evening a memorable one. There is nowhere quite like Southsea Deli, you are the best!

This is the second workshop I have done with South Coast Cookery and it was absolutely excellent. I will definitely be signing up for many more in 2025.

Lovely staff. Very nice interior and furnishings. However unfortunately, the same can’t be said of the food we were served. We both ordered a cooked breakfast and the fried eggs had hard yolks, the bacon had been cooked too fast, so was tough and chewy, and the toast was so overdone that you couldn’t cut through it without it disintegrating and pinging pieces all over the table. I can only assume on the day we visited the normal chef was off sick, as if that was not the case, I can’t see how anyone would have cooking classes there (accept maybe the chef who cooked our breakfast)!

I always go in for something small and end up with loads! The team here are super friendly and I always feel so welcome. The deli counter has some amazing fritattas, salads and sausage rolls and the shop is well stocked with lots of delicious, locally sourced items. The coffee is very good too.

By far the best value for money / best quality spot for coffee and lunch in the city. Where else can you sit down and get a great coffee and a sourdough sandwich for a tenner ? Also with fresh high quality ingredients. I’m fortunate I don’t live close by, otherwise I’d be -£300 a month. But anyone who is near elm grove and hungry, you should go.

The Southsea Deli provided an excellent venue for our daughter's wedding reception. Everyone was well catered for including the children. The food, venue and staff were exceptional and we cannot praise them enough. My wife and I would thoroughly recommend the Southsea Deli.

Fabulous! Best sandwiches I've ever had. All fresh ingredients. Delicious sides and baked goodies. The cookies and brownies were amazing. Such a cute place to sit and relax.

Absolutely beautiful cafe. I had the most amazing sandwich with coppa and mozzarella. Well worth a visit and I can’t wait to visit again. Fantastic selection of goodies on sale as well.

Really friendly service with lots of lunch options. Food very tasty. Club sandwich felt expensive for what it was but all quality ingredients and tasted great. Have had coffee from their takeaway truck on the seafront previously too, which was also excellent. Quality choice of condiments and ingredients to take away as well, a lovely little deli in Central Southsea.

The ultimate bacon sandwich, really is. We also shared a club sandwich which was equally fantastic. Lovely space to sit and eat as well, and staff are friendly and helpful. Top notch!

A lovely restaurant and deli on elm grove. A simple breakfast menu. Food is well cooked and tasty. And coffee is great. Perfect location for breakfast to start your Saturday. We had smashed avocado with a fried egg (fried is the only option), and an English breakfast. We all thoroughly enjoyed it.

Got a really nice bits earlier today from the van at the park run. The 2 members of staff had very good conversation and customer care

Please don't tell anyone how good the pies are, how delicious the salads are and please don't tell anyone how nice the staff are...... Or we won't be able to get a seat!

We enjoyed an amazing night at Southsea Deli in January for a friends baby shower. Daniel and the team couldn’t have been more helpful. The food was incredible- lots of locally sourced and quality ingredients. Thank you for having us. I have also eaten at the deli for lunch & the food is always stunning. We’ll be back I’m sure! My favourite café in town, great coffee, food and perfect seating options. I often take my laptop here to work and the staff are always very friendly. Limited vegan lunch options is a bit of a shame but the vegan roasted pepper and hummus sourdough sandwich is fantastic. Very reasonable food prices and a relaxed environment that doesn't make you feel pressured to order food. Also do great gifting options at Christmas and cookery workshops as a little bonus.

Can’t believe I’ve not found this place before. I went in and got a side salad and spinach and feta pie yesterday to take away and I think I might be the best thing I’ve ever eaten. I cannot tell you how many people I’ve told about it in 24 hours :) No photos - I’d eaten at least 75% of it before I even thought about it

The perfect day. We recently celebrated our wedding at The Southsea Deli and we couldn’t be happier with our choice. From start to finish Daniel made the planning and event seamless. The food was stunning (with our options adjusted to cater for both veggie and GF), our guests were so well looked after by the amazing staff and our wedding cake was just beautiful. Had an amazing evening with the Garbos Team at the cooking class. Dan was a great cook and a great teacher. The food turned out really well and there where clean plates all round. Would definitely recommend and we will definitely be back. Thanks again.

My adult daughter and I really enjoyed our experience at Southsea Deli yesterday. All the staff were polite, helpful and went the extra mile. The food was great- tasty and presented well. We were particularly impressed with the gluten free choices. The decor was tastefully done and the atmosphere was relaxing, While we were there, a cookery workshop was underway which looked great fun- I certainly will be back to the deli and might even try a workshop! Thank you.

good food and coffee for reasonable price

We hired the Southsea Deli to provide canapés at our wedding on 08.07.23 and received so many compliments from our guests! People were still talking about the fabulous sausage rolls well into the evening! The staff who were circulating the food were friendly and polite, we couldn't have asked for better service or food!

Stopped here with the better half for a quick beverage and cake 😋. The establishment also boasts a selection of organic wines, condiments, pickles etc.. at reasonable prices.

What an amazing place! I visited The Southsea deli for the first time on Saturday as I was travelling in the area and was amazed at the huge selection of different food available from around the world. There is also a very unique selection of wine, gins and other spirits. The fresh food and beverage options were plentiful, how lucky is Southsea to have this place on their doorstep!

Luxury food and staff on top of their game, 10/10

This place is an absolute gem in Portsmouth. Slightly hidden in terms of street signage, means it's not overly busy and those who witness word-of-mouth and curious window shoppers are likely to wonder in. The staff are pleasant and smiling, the coffee and food is slightly pricey, but I reckon some of the cost is for for atmosphere you have. I sat here happily reading my book, drinking a vanilla flat white, eating a spinach and ricotta quiche which tastes so good it feels like mum could have made it. I highly recommend this place for a lunch date, a catch up, or in my case some self-care time. Thankyou

A huge thank you to Southsea Deli for hosting an amazing pizza and pasta making workshop for us last night! Rather than just going out for food/drinks it was so nice to go somewhere that offer something a little different, and that’s very hard to find in Portsmouth. Our team of 20 had the whole place to ourselves and had such a laugh. They offer this for all types of events and are so flexible and accommodating. You can even add on wine tasting! I’ll defo be rebooking for personal events!

Fabulous lunch here today with a friend. We had the Buddha Bowl which was just so fresh and delicious. Staff friendly and helpful. Ordered same at Southsea Beach Cafe a couple of weeks ago which was considerably more expensive and very disappointingly unimaginative. Southsea Deli - our new place for lunch

The food was fine, but overpriced for a quite basic sandwich. There are much better places in Southsea.

Had such a fun afternoon here with work colleagues on Friday. Daniel gave us a lesson on how to make Asian street food which we then went on to eat...it was delicious! We've had a pasta making class here in the past too, again it was lots of fun! Daniel and his team are so welcoming, the food and drink is lovely and I would thoroughly recommend Southsea Deli.

This deli is a little pricey but definitely worth the trip. Great coffee and a fantastic selection of local produce and other interesting foods. A fun find =]. Excellent

A fantastic deli with amazing food! We also did a pasta making course on a Thursday evening which was great fun. Daniel was a brilliant teacher and we had an amazing evening with a lot of laughs along the way. I would highly recommend it and I can't wait to go back and try and different course.

What a great way to learn how to produce great, easy food. Saturday’s filled pasta lesson was superb and Dan & Will were the prefect hosts / teachers. I would recommend these culinary lessons / experiences to anyone no matter what level of cook they are.

1 star for when we went in the staff were smiling & accommodating BUT.. we ordered the loaded baguette with mocha, coffee arrived about after 5 mins, waited for the bread for 20 mins, my friend went to the counter to ask about it & when he went back to the table he said that the staff were like dont know anything about it& he said twice that we we paid for the loaded one. Arrived 5mins after & it was just regular baguette with 2 slices of bacon..the man from the counter said sorry & asked if he could make me a new loaded one but i WAS SO DISAPPOINTED that i just asked for it to be wrapped for a takeaway. SO DISAPPOINTED COZ I PAID £9 for 2 baguettes with 2 slices of bacon each. Plus the £4 for the 2 cups of coffee..

Considerate staff, as I have mobility problems. Will definitely go back. Great coffee ☕.

Southsea Deli is a gem offering delicious homemade food, great coffee and excellent friendly service. I especially enjoy their vegetarian tarts and frittata as well as their Greek orange cake and vegan brownies. I am lucky to live within easy walking distance. Their loyalty cards offer a free hot drink after you have bought eight.

Coffee and cake were good. There were 2 assistants running the shop that afternoon, and neither were particularly attentive, despite the fact the shop was not busy at all. I asked to buy another item and one assistant said she would get it for me and even told me the price but then made no move to get the item (which was out of my reach). The other assistant was just wandering around aimlessly. We eventually left without buying anything else. They certainly lost our business with their total lack of interest! Postscript: After reading the owner's response, I have been back twice and had good service, so I have revised my rating to 5 stars. Thank you.

It's so nice to find a local business that's doing well, especially during the lockdown craziness. We first found the deli in its old home (just down the road from where it is now). The combination of high quality (often local) produce, friendly and helpful staff and lovely food has kept us coming back ever since and, now they've moved, the parking is [usually] a lot easier :-).

Top tier sandwiches and a lovely range of local produce in store. Can be on the expensive side and portions could be bigger but quality makes up for it

Oh wow! What a lovely surprise! Thank you so much for the surprise delivery of a gift hamper! The goodies therein... absolutely fab! We have sampled the chocolate, my husband was very enthusiastic in sharing it😉 The gingerbread is a firm favourite now and we will be shopping for more. Can't wait to sample the Strawberry and Black Pepper Jam, Spicy smoked nuts and Olive Oil. Superb gift, beautifully presented and socially distanced delivery. Highly recommend.
