Came to Edinburgh on a 2-day stint to get a taste of the city. Seen this coffee place as one of the recommended and went in eager to taste. Upon entering, it was an unwelcoming atmosphere. In the brief interaction with one of the guys, he was extremely rude and embarrassed my friend in front of other patrons. We were tourists and visiting a number of places to get a sense of Edinburgh in general, incl. all the different recommended bakeries/coffee shops etc. We were not aware of the 'ONLY SPEND IN OUR SHOP, EAT FROM OUR SHOP' policy they had in place, and so took a snack from a local bakery that we seen recommended. Had we known that he was going to inhospitably call it out infront of everyone and make us feel unwelcome, we would never have went in. From a tourist point, its restrictive and detracts from the overall experience of exploring the area's culinary offerings - maybe the guys should keep this in mind for future given that Edinburgh is a city full of tourists? I should also mention that I initially was going to buy a snack from their cafe, as my friend had their own but I had none, however there was only one non-fresh looking croissant left on display? So we were not even aware they even did snacks. We then sat in uncomfortable silence for the duration, quickly drank the coffee, waited to pay (at least 7minutes) a hefty sum for a tiny coffee. Definitely dont recommend for tourists and will not be back

Awful experience. My partner went in to get us two take away coffees. NO SUGAR ALLOWED!!! My partner takes sugar in coffee and I can take it or leave it, depending on the coffee (regardless, a blanket denial of sugar is ridiculous) - but the coffee was burnt and extremely bitter and in this case, without sugar - undrinkable. Unbelievably pretentious and arrogant attitude, will definitely not be back!

I made my first visit to the Source today after a recommendation from a friend. I had two funky Wilton Benitez competition standard coffees on Spro and pourover. Both impressed me very much, pronounced flavour notes, well balanced, clean finish. Service was on point, informative and friendly. One for the coffee heads who want to chat or just enjoy a really tasty brew ;)

Pretentious beyond belief .. dropped in for carry out coffee .. staff rude.. asked for sugar and was informed they don't have sugar as the coffee doesn't need it.. WHAT .. absolutely atrocious to pay £7 for two flat whites and they don't accept that some like sugar in coffee .. won't ever be back ..

This is a great source of well made coffee that will start your day right. Owner knows his stuff and you can also buy beans to take away. Has a certain purity of mission that I for one can endorse.

Excellent coffee, so if that's all you want then pop in and get a takeaway. Remember, no sugar, honey or any sweetener is offered. If you want a warm place with good vibes, go elsewhere. Edinburgh is full of lovely cafes with super coffee. Just google them. Around the corner there is As some reviews said, the owner is sanctimonious and has an insufferable attitude. So, beware.

Horrible burnt tasting cheap coffee. Not great service from the bald guy with beard. Been working in the area on business for a while now and thought I would try it. Won't be back there is better coffee close by with far better service.

We went twice on our trip to Edinburgh and each time it was amazing. The espresso is out of this world. These guys really know their coffee! Our kid loved the hot chocolate too.

Terrific coffee. The owner of this small cafe is always on the look for interesting beans, one million miles from the "safe" stuff you find even in speciality coffee places in town. As cherrie son the cake, good music, good decor, and good prices!

I will begin with that I am super biased. Generally in the UK, I struggled to find diversity in coffee, most coffee are more chocolaty/nutty, and even among them, quality aren't usually that good (this includes some smaller chains that are supposed to be good?) There is a lack of complexity and layers. I found that the coffee beans from the Source are quite unique. It's complex, there is a journey of different flavour throughout the whole tasting. If you are just looking for an average coffee, like those from the big chains, this is not for you, you will probably find it pricy. (Although I encourage you to try it, maybe it will open a whole new chapter for you)

Best coffee I’ve had outside the PNW. Small place with a cool, no frills vibe and a few muffins/baked goods to choose from. This isn’t Starbucks - don’t go looking for drinks that hide the taste of coffee. This is for flat whites, long blacks, Americanos and espressos. This is for beans that make you sit up and ask where they came from. This is skateboards and metal music and artists plotting their upcoming showcase. This is the coffee shop that reminded me why I love coffee.

This is a little corner of coffee heaven - amazingly good coffee brewed by a real coffee geek! The beans change frequently, and each visit is an experience! Coffee aficionados will have their fix, and worth keeping an eye on the pastries, too - the selection of food and snack is limited, as after all this is a specialist coffee shop, but they are all delicious, and in case it matters to you, they also happen to be vegan. The coffee is also very well priced - highly addictive place!

Over £2 for a cup of coffee in this day and age is an insult to the locality. Despite the raz- ma -taz of the place and the pretence that the rude and poorly socialised Oz- owner put's on . To paraphrase a repetitive ad , it's definitely not worth the price. Despite the owner swirling around the coffee with a spoon for minutes and what not , it's far from a master piece in fact it's just coffee that tastes no better than quality instant or Asda's own . I felt ripped off the couple of times I've been in with My foodie wife. The same two coffees amounted to what you could feed a family with at McDonalds, we were treated and spoke to no better then cattle , in part because we did not speak the owners language of coffee sophistication . Very unfriendly and pretensious -Edinburgh seems to be a magnet. For this culture. Coffee is not an art it's just a polite laxative. The owner is full of it. Not covid safe even when masks were mandatory -as it was at the time of our visit. My wife wanted food but I drew the line `at coffee and reminded her we have bills waiting. As the food was overpriced too. It came to near a tenner just for a couple of coffees and rude manners.

NOTE: The name is a bit confusing as this used to be called "brew'd"(and the website currently still uses this name for the coffee bar), for which there is a separate entry on TA. At any rate, this is currently my favourite coffee place in town. Impeccably prepared, complex flavoured flat whites and pourovers, produced with single origin beans accurately sourced by the friendly Australian owner Andrew. His taste inclines towards "funky", interesting, not run-of-the mill coffees, and my taste agrees with his. The sweets I've tried were high quality too. The place is tiny with not much seating, but if you manage to grab a spot it's a very charming little place to spend some time in. Friendly prices compared to the Edinburgh average.

A brilliant wee stop across from Castle Terrace - great if you're going to the farmers' market on a Saturday. Nice decor inside, with a few seats to sit in, and some great baked goods. Most of the food is vegan and I think all of it is baked locally.

Been coming here for a while now, since they opened up. The coffee is fantastic, there's a good selection of bakes, and staff are all lovely and knowledgeable. What more do you need?

This is my local cafe and it is amazing how good the coffee is here. The owner sources coffee from small suppliers around the world and roasts his own coffee. This place is hipster in the best sense of the word. On occasional days you can hear some slow groovy rock. Nice place to sit down and admire the Edinburgh Castle. Hidden gem definetly.

I used to frequent Cafe Truva at the shore a number of years ago and was looking forward to visiting their Lady Lawson street branch on a visit to town. What a disappointment! The ‘panini spice’ that I used to love was a delicious mix of spiced chicken, mozzarella and sun dried tomatoes served with a lovely Turkish-salad meze. Unfortunately there must be profit margins to protect here and the quality of product has been compromised beyond all recognition...bland strips of processed chicken, one piece of sun dried tomato all cooked without seemingly much care. The side salad used to be a real treat served with feta cheese, stuffed vine leaves, tzatziki and cous cous, instead you are now served some chopped lettuce, tomato and cucumber with no dressing.....distressing stuff. I hope they are reading and take these comments into consideration, will not return in a hurry which is a crying shame.

We enjoy eating at Shackleton’s. If you are staying at Channings it is a very easy place to grab a bite to eat. Everyone is nice and we enjoy the food.

My lunch was very poor value, in particular the salad. A very small serving of potato salad, watery Greek salad and 8-9 small mixed leaves cost £7.50. I thought it was coronation chicken but it was tatties ! Had to wait a while at the counter to be served too. Won’t be back.
