The Sorting Room in Cardiff

This had to be the prettiest/daintiest afternoon tea I've ever had. Really enjoyed the savoury options as they are quite often a bit of a let down. The beef brisket slider was absolutely delicious and I could have scoffed another one! Scones were served straight from the oven. They were very light and buttery. The pastries were the most delicate I've ever had. I was expecting them to be rich and heavy but that wasn't the case. The pixie orange lacked the mousse texture that was stated on the menu and could hardly taste the orange flavour. That was the only pastry that disappointed. Service was excellent and out teapots were never empty! Overall, I really enjoyed our experience. Perfect for a special occasion.

Great atmosphere, very clean and modern. Feels luxurious as if it is a fine dining experience. However, the price is much much cheaper. Overall, it is an amazing food and presentation compared to the price. I would highly recommend the visit here! And the staff were extremely polite as well.

We went for Sunday lunch the staff were 10/10, they could not have been better from the woman at the door to Mo, our waiter. Food was great, really delicious and great portions. Not much atmosphere in here but I would recommend.

Really terrific Sunday lunch great value at £34. I had chicken wings and roast pork. The pork melted in your mouth. Lovely roast vegs. Service was not rushed. Mo was great server. Highly recommend.

Delicious meal at the Sorting Office restaurant. The food was tasty, portions a good size and incredible value for money. We went a lunch and had the two course set menu. Our server was Giovanna and she was attentive and knew her allergens well. We felt really looked after and in a venue that oozes class, history and elegance.

Sadly this gets 2 stars, based on our recent visit. We went along for a festive afternoon tea (£44 per person) The first time we'd been and it was rather disappointing. It's a lovely building and it has been very well restored and renovated into what one might call a high end hotel and restaurant, so we were expecting food and service in keeping with such surroundings. Once shown to our table we waited some 15 minutes before the waitress came over and explained about the tea selection and that coffee was also available. My wife asked for a coffee and was brought tea. This was quickly rectified but a lot had been spilt into the saucer. We noticed several tables were awaiting clearing and cleaning and these were left, despite the place only being half full at most. After some 40 minutes of waiting, and having ordered more tea and coffee in the meantime, we enquired as to where the afternoon tea was. Canapés were then brought to us followed by the finger sandwiches and cake selection. The sandwiches were good as were the scones but the cake selection was disappointing. One cake was meant to have been a "rum soaked" raison cake but it was very dry and basically stale. The other cakes were nothing special and we left most of them. We were not charged the "service charge" by the waitress, (who was polite and friendly). We had intended booking a table for six in the restaurant and taking family there this month but this has put us off returning to say the least. We shall stick to The Classroom instead, where they know exactly what good food and excellent service means.

We had an amazing fixed price lunch menu which was beautifully presented and tasted absolutely delicious. Massimiliauo our waiter was traditional, professional and considerate. The best sticky toffee pudding I have ever eaten.

Christmas Day Lunch was really lovely. Massimo, our waiter was excellent - traditional, well trained waiter. The live music was much appreciated. The food was all good - no complaints. Highly recommend and will visit again.

Waste of money if you want something for a special occasion. Food is average and the service is awful. Slow and inexperienced.

Very poor service. We didn’t get offered to order a drink once, we had to catch the attention of the staff, and even then there wasn’t the offer to the rest of the table to order drinks. Food service was very slow. Accidentally got given another tables dessert and told it was ‘on the house’. Shortly afterwards we were told it was actually someone on our tables dessert, after someone else had already started eating it. I fought back and thankfully that person also got their dessert. Only one veggie option for mains, is very disappointing. £7.75 for a pint of moretti or Guinness!! Food tasted good, but at the price we paid you would expect a much better service and experience.

Magnificent building and entrance rightly put to use again. My friend and I booked at the last minute despite having heard that a Christmas party there for approximately 400 people was generally much appreciated apart from the food which was described as something else. My friend and I were early so had a cocktail in the bar prior to lunch which was lovely. Lunch was another matter. In total we spent £193.00 pounds for a two course meal for 2 which was of mediocre quality and questionable service - and at some point almost rude. I can only suggest that both staff and chefs look to their laurels when there are paces like Home in Penarth - and indeed The Classroom in Cardiff itself. I sincerely hope your hotel and accommodation side of the business is working out as you may have to rely on that. I can honestly say that I have experienced so little for so very much. Get over yourselves and start to deliver.

Delicious food, lovely decor and ambiance and excellent service. Our waiter for the evening was Lahier who was super attentive and friendly. He even brought a complimentary cocktail for the birthday girl and at the end of the meal a complimentary birthday dessert. Will definitely be back!

He’s a character and so good at his job - amusing, discreet and so efficient.

I went to the Sorting Room for a Christmas party with 17 guests. The service was excellent, as was the food. The decor throughout the bar and restaurant areas are well thought and designed.

Been here several times. Great food. Great service.

I am absolutely shocked and appalled on how terrible the bar manager runs her bar I think her name is liberty was allowing staff to have drinks brought DURING a shift and allowing a staff member which I think name was Jake to drink wine on a shift what you running a club because the music was so loud I couldn’t hear my server was ridiculous what is this place a nightclub honestly disgusting. I thought for a quality hotel you’d have well trained staff, I will not be coming back unless both staff members have been fired or re-trains absolutely disgusting. Absolutely appalling behaviour from both towards other staff members as well and customers no politeness from them towards customers or other staff members absolutely unacceptable behaviour.

Wonderful dinner at the Sorting Room. Everything from the pre-dinner cocktails, the food and the wine pairings were perfect. Our server Lance went above and beyond to look after us. He gave an excellent recommendation for the wine and even gave us recommendations for restaurants to visit when we travel to Australia next year!

Not a bad thing to say about The Sorting Room except I can't wait to return to try a different dish. Fantastic staff made the experience sublime.

Lovely restaurant with excellent customer service however slow at times

Was here for breakfast. It was a little disappointing tbh. It was just a buffet without any table service. The buffet items ran out regularly and it was some time before they were replenished. Eggs were overcooked. Would have been nice to have an egg chef at least. The rest of the hotel is 5-star quality.

Masssimiliano was the one who served us and he was very accommodating. I love the ambiance and the timing of the food was served just right, not too quick and not too long. My favourites are the Monmouthshire Reared Pork and Sun Dried Tomato Scotch Egg, and the Sticky Toffee Pudding.

We went for my birthday, the food was lovely, we had the duck and scotch egg starters (shredded duck was so tasty, spring roll was crispy and the scotch egg was juicy and had a runny egg middle...perfect), then we went for the rump steak and the trio of lamb which were both tasty with lovely sides. It was very sweet I had a birthday drink sent over (strawberry cocktail), the staff were very friendly and attentive, Giovanna was especially kind and her service was really appreciated to celebrate my birthday! She's an asset to the team at the Sorting Room. I'd recommend the sorting room,I thought the food was good and the staff were lovely, we'd definitely return.

We went for some drinks on a Friday afternoon and wanted to see what we thought before booking a spa day. The bar qrea is impressive with the furniture comfortable. There is an extensive bar menu with a good range of cocktails and wines. On approaching the bar the person behind the bar looked directly at me, walked away and went out the back. This was incredibly off putting and disappointing - not what I’d expect from a hotel such as this. Another member of staff came and he was pleasant taking the drinks order bringing them over when ready. The cocktails were really good quality but for me the experience was spoilt from being ignored at the bar. This was 2pm and the place was empty and if that’s how they treat customers it isn’t for me. We left after one drink and went to another hotel that has better staff and atmosphere.

On arrival, no staff available to greet although stand says to wait, after a couple of minutes wait, walked into the restaurant from entrance to back of the restaurant and not a single staff was found. One table sat but no staff to be found. Walked around to the bar and asked staff there if could get service to be seated at restaurant and finally staff arrived! Sat down, nice panel ceilings with falk marble tables and art deco lighting. Had the lunch menu, 2 courses for £22 with a 10% service charge: The scotch egg: thinly fried salami on the top was a smart idea. The crust was good as was the egg, could have been a bit more runny. The sauce was also nice : some cream based and some balsamic based with a few chopped spring The salmon : Salmon was slightly over done. The cauliflower puree on the outside was sweet. The lentils puree was ok. The tartar sauce confused the flavours as was on both the lentils and the cauliflower. The pakora: was nice but not crispy . In and out in one hour. Service was ok during the meal. Shame about first appearances on arrival to the restaurant! Also Wine was about £10 for a glass and cocktails £15.

We had a lovely afternoon. The food was incredible quality and absolutely delicious. I was so impressed by the quality, especially given the excellent value lunch prices. The service was superb. Giovanna was warm and welcoming, professional and attentive. Fantastic service and atmosphere for our treat afternoon out.

Went for the sunday lunch and the food was really good, the beef in particular was beautiful! Very stingy with the goats cheese in the salad though which was a shame. Wine by the glass was excellent but very expensive. Be wary if you visit towards the end of service, minimal servers and by the end there were hardly any staff members about so it took forever to get errors on our bill rectified. The tables are also way too close together imo, it's a large room and they could easily space them out a bit more!

Great meals inviting atmosphere and caring staff make this restaurant a gem

Nice setting however mood dampened by very poor customer service. Bottle of wine presented in an empty bucket, had to request ice be put in it three times, much to the annoyance of our server. Persevered despite being told menu was “wank”. We should have heeded her advice, however perseverance was needed again to chew through our steak. Terrible.

Wonderful lunch for a family birthday. Gorgeous food and our waiter Mo was fantastic.

Came for dinner whilst visiting Cardiff for the Billy Joel concert. The restaurant itself and the atmosphere were wonderful, modern and inviting. The food was a little underwhelming. The beef wellington had soggy pastry which is inevitable when it is cut from a whole fillet. The seabass was not as described on the menu and appeared to have a portion of the onion soup starter rather than the cauliflower curry sauce which was odd and disappointing. Redemption though came in the shape of our waiter Jamie who was an absolute superstar!

I’m gluten and dairy free, I advised this when booking, before our arrival our waiter Massimilano had spoken to to chef to check which dishes I could have. Only the cauliflower cheese and Yorkshire wasn’t safe for Sunday lunch. Which is understandable. I had salmon on lentils is was excellent. My hubbys roast beef was amazing too. Thank you massimalio for looking after us in such a professional, friendly and caring manner 👌

We went for our first year anniversary, it was brilliant. They went really all out making it a very special night for my wife and I. Our waiter Mo and the manager Kasper (I think that’s the name) were great hosts. Thank you all! We’ll see you again next year for 2nd wedding anniversary

This far exceeded our expectations of a city centre hotel restaurant, and I would highly recommend the restaurant. The service was friendly and attentive.

I came with my Mum for lunch before the Billy Joel concert, and we had the special three course lunch menu with some Billy-themed cocktails! The setting feels relaxed while also very elegant, and the service was super friendly and attentive. Our waiter Massiniliano gave us fantastic service, very personable and friendly, and wanted to make sure we had a lovely time! The food itself was gorgeous, great portions without ever being overwhelming. I had the Sorting Room Salad, the Salmon main, and the Lemon Tart - all three were delicious and beautifully presented.

Absolutely stunning food and relaxed atmosphere. Quick service as well. Massimiliano was helpful and made us laugh a lot :)

Went here for our anniversary meal when in Cardiff for the weekend. Treated incredibly well by Giovanna all evening, lovely touches to make the whole experience memorable. Would highly recommend.

Had a wonderful graduation meal here with very friendly staff in the booking stage as well as on the evening. This was my second visit and the food is very good and reasonably priced.

Had breakfast at the Sorting Room. The options were fewer than I expected. They only have the classic options, e.g. baked beans, fried eggs, bacons, sausages etc. They all taste fairly regular, but the sausages are quite dry. Having said that, the services, atmosphere and bread are good. Nice selection of Wilkin & Sons jams.

This was our second visit. The first time we came here was for Sunday lunch, the food was good, however we were shocked when our waiter told us the service charge went to the chefs and it would be better to give him the tip in cash which we did. Once I got home I thought it best to contact the manager who confirmed the tronc was indeed shared with all staff and there was no need to give one individual cash. I was assured the issue would be addressed with the waiter involved. We decided to return here as the evening menu looked really great. We were greeted by Ioan who was very welcoming after this welcome it was all downhill. We ordered our pre drinks with olives, wine and food. The wine came first before our aperitifs. We were asked to taste the wine which was poured into my husband’s glass and onto the table. The olive’s arrived without any way to eat them other than with our fingers. We asked for cocktail sticks which were supplied, all fifteen of them; really!!? Starters arrived, the salmon was beautiful, the bread had been warmed up in the microwave so was chewy, the butter was excessive, not a fine dining portion. So the mains arrive, the lobster Thermidor sauce was extremely salty, the chips were clearly frozen chips not freshly made in house.. The beef wellington was well cooked and salty. So all in all high end prices for absolutely average food. Just to completely ruin our wedding anniversary meal the waiter aggressively challenged us for payment for a service charge. I asked to talk to a manager and once again Ioan was really positive and took our concerns seriously BUT we shall not return.

We visited for bottomless brunch and had a lovely experience (so much so that we've booked in again for another brunch in a few months). The drinks menu was extensive with cocktails/beers/wines available. Food was tasty and very well presented. Our sever, Massimiliano, was friendly, engaging and proactive in topping up drinks! It's very much on the more expensive side for a bottomless in Cardiff, but the champagne upgrade was worth it (more so than the prosecco option in my opinion).

Five stars in every aspect! Highly recommend it even if you’re not staying at the hotel, they have a kids menu that it’s a must when you’re traveling with kids. The food tasted, looked, and smelled fresh, and it is because they source everything locally. I loved the atmosphere, and the service was outstanding. Maximiliano and everyone else was great, very friendly, and happy to help and explain the menu and our options. Definitely look forward to coming back, and enjoying another great item of the menu.

Another beautiful lunch at The Sorting Room restaurant. Delicious food, excellent customer service and very reasonably priced for the set lunch time menu although the a la carte is also available. It was my birthday and the waiter provided me with a lovely cocktail and dessert FOC which was a greatly appreciated gesture. Definitely be returning. Plenty of payable parking nearby.

A great addition to high-end dining in Cardiff. The menu is relatively small, which suggests they focus on quality rather than quantity. And quality is definitely what we experienced.

Food is very good with a short menu. A prime indication that they concentrate on doing things well rather than having a great long menu that does everything just about OK. Thoroughly recommended. The root vegetables in honey are 💯 glorious.

The server was nice enough, but everything about our dining experience was average. The food? Ok. The atmosphere? Ok. The service? Ok. It is dubious that this is a true Michelin restaurant. The price looks deceptively good, but is high for the quality of food/presentation that you get.

I had the rump steak, which was a lovely piece of meat. Perfectly cooked hot med/rare and a nice thick slice, with a separate peppercorn sauce, chips, and mushrooms at £28.

We had a fab time at our Thermal Suite session and lunch, would highly recommend. Thank you especially to Massimiliano who went out of his way to arrange an alternative Vegetarian meal for my friend in The Sorting Room, nothing was too much trouble.

We booked a Lavish Lunch and spa thermal pool which was amazing. We were served by massimiliano at the Sorting Room. He went above and beyond as I didn’t like the vegetarian option. He arranged for me to have another meal. Both the starter and man meal was lovely. Great service

None of the dishes were good. The duck mousse was very basic, the lamb was not processed and the dessert ice cream was not homemade. The waiters forgot to serve me the glasses of wine I ordered. For 200 euros, we are very, very far from the mark.

Supreme quality, Michelin star restaurant.

Love the food and the service there! The waiter was nice, introduced the dishes and you could hear lots of laughs around! The dishes were unbeatable! We didn't Oder a lot since we had a big meal before, but you can tell the quality of the food by the pic. If I'm going to revisit Cardiff, I'm coming back to this restaurant again:))

Attentive service and a wonderful Sunday lunch. Beef perfectly cooked and sides were delicious and plentiful. Lovely ambience with some live music playing. My friend was made to feel very special with a free cocktail and dessert for her birthday. With half a bottle of wine per person included it was excellent value for money and we can’t wait to return

Myself and my partner came to the Parkgate Hotel for Lavish Lunch and Spa. The inside of the hotel is absolutely lovely and not quite what you'd expect from the outside looking in - very nice atmosphere and we had lunch booked at The Sorting Room. The restaurant has a very warm and welcoming atmosphere which was only heightened by the staff. We had the absolute joy of having Massimiliano as our server who did an amazing job of looking after us. Did a perfect job of entertaining us and describing parts of the menu to us - provided a service with an amazing attitude which is quite rare to find these days, we hope to come again in the future to see him and try more of what the menu has to offer. We found the set menu had a decent amount of selection to choose from, myself and my partner were very happy with our choices. The food was beautifully presented and absolutely exceeded. Considering the very reasonable price of the lavish lunch and spa offered by the Parkgate Hotel, it does feel like you're getting such great quality for what you've paid for. Nonetheless, the prices on the set menu during the week are incredibly priced for 2 or 3 course meals. Would definitely recommend and will definitely look to return again.

We ate here on a Friday night. It wasn't very busy unfortunately which was a shame as the food and decor was beautiful. To start we had the scotch egg and the scallops, the food was all beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. For main we had the steak pie and the steak. The pie- one word - WOW! It was enormous, the pastry the best I have ever tasted but unfortunately I couldn't finish it all such was the size. (Not a criticism though at all) We also had dessert of sticky toffee pudding and a peanut butter parfait. The parfait was very rich and decadent. Overall we had a pleasant night.

Following an overnight stay, we booked in for Sunday Lunch which I’m so glad we did as it didn’t disappoint. We was seated by Casper who was friendly and welcoming. Drinks order was taken efficiently and our waiter was attentive, efficient, polite and very helpful, on point with everything and very friendly. I wish I had taken his name just to give him a mention but didn’t, all i can say is he wore his hair tied back and was working Sunday 18th Feb during the afternoon time. Food was exceptional and the servings for the Sunday lunch was more than enough. The beef was so tasty and the vegetables cooked perfectly. Honestly it’s the best roast we’ve had in a long time. Each course was amazing, no complaints whatsoever. Will definitely return and highly recommend - thanks all!

We loved this place. Fabulous surroundings and atmosphere. The staff were very friendly and a special shout out for Tom and Choli who looked after us all evening. Will definitely return when we are back in Cardiff.

We had Dinner, Bed & Breakfast at the Park Gate Hotel. Everything was lovely, great atmosphere, amazing food, we will definitely be returning. Spent the evening in the bar and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, the staff were very friendly and kept interacting with my daughter which she loved. See you again soon!

It was a great spot with lots of really nice drinks. I loved it and I would definitely recommend it. The bartends are also really friendly.

Came in today for a drink with my 4 year old daughter and was served by Adam. I had a cappuccino (stunning) and my daughter had a Diet Coke. Adam was great and was very friendly towards us both. I was a little surprised at the cost of the drinks, with a small Diet Coke (200ml) costing the average price of a pint of lager, but it was a very nice visit regardless and again Adam's service made it worth the cost.

Always excellent service and atmosphere. We were served by Michael and received fantastic service. A great spot in Cardiff for drinks and to stay for a weekend in Cardiff. Perfect location.

The staff on entering the hotel directed me to a waiting area just outside the restaurant where I met up with a good friend before going in for our booking. Prices are very reasonable for an upmarket place and it has a decent winelist. Service is excellent and relalaxed. The food is excellent and I couldn't fault it. I love the wood panelled room as it gives a lovely relaxing feeling whilst you spend your time enjoying the food. Despite thinking, it was a small portion I couldn't finish it despite eating all I could. The root vegetables were gorgeous. I'll certainly be back. A thoroughly enjoyable evening.

A good place to spend a weekend dinner with family.

Great afternoon tea with personalised service. There was a good choice of sandwiches and cakes plus fresh scones and cream. We had prosecco with ours which was a lovely touch. The only disappointment that most cocktails are almost £20 which is ridiculous.

Food and atmosphere amazing. Beef Wellington the best. Only negative was the cocky rude waiter.

Went to the sorting room for a birthday meal and all I can say is Wow!! Service from start to finish was amazing the Mrs who's birthday it was received a free birthday cocktail and dessert. The food was incredible and the choices of wines were great too. I would recommend this restaurant to any foodie. Thanks sorting room for a great meal and the special touches made it one of the best restaurants visits in Cardiff
