A cool place I kind of randomly choose because it was close to where I was staying and I didn't regret. It feels very authentic, it doesn't try to be something specific other than a nice place to be. Down to earth and a nice atmosphere with a friendly guy behind the bar, decor not sure how to describe it and here it doesn't really matter.

I’m trying hard to think of something positive to say about this place but it’s not happening. The food we had was basic - cardboard chips with a hair baked into my quiche, no dressing for the salads that came, the curry was served up- something in a sauce plonked in the middle of a circle of rice with no further accompaniments, my wine glass had red wine on the rim from another customer (I was drinking white). Not one for being squeamish I felt sick when I discovered the hair after the dirty wine glass and just wanted to get out. It’s stuck in a time warp - pinewood panelling all over the place and a bit rough another edges. I definitely won’t be back.

Eileen, the landlady, went the extra mile to make the evening special for everyone. The Six Bells proved to be the perfect place for a 40th anniversary reunion of students from 1979 - we used to visit this pub back then, and it’s still well worth the trip! Eileen, the landlady, and her staff did everything to help us - they had cleared a room for us so that we could chat before eating, and had set up all of the tables for us to eat in the garden area. The food came exactly as we had pre-ordered it (there were 35 of us!), and everyone commented on how they had enjoyed their meals! Eileen even made a fabulous apple crumble dessert for us all at no extra charge! The beers were great too, and the atmosphere, with live music in the bar, was really friendly and fun - absolutely perfect!!

Whenever I visit Cambridge, the Six Bells pub is always on my priority list. It is a lovely traditional pub with welcoming friendly atmosphere and cosy vibes. Beers are very good, the selection is great. But the highlight of the experience is the food. Their steak is legendary, grilled to perfection and served with chips, grilled mushrooms and tomatoes. The pub also runs a weekly quiz (serving homemade chips) and if lucky you can get a quick tip from the landlord across the tilt, who happens to know everything there is to know about everything.

The Six Bells is a small pub tucked away off Mill Road. It is very much a neighbourhood local and when we were there early evening, it was quite quiet. They do offer live music on certain nights and having been to one of these I can vouch to the fact that it can get much busier. The range of beer was limited, but the size of the bar area precludes much more. The food menu was similarly limited with the usual range of pub food: ham, egg & chips, lasagne & chips, burger & chips, etc. My scampi was perfectly edible, but nothing out of the ordinary. The food was reasonable value with most dishes around the £7 mark. There were no desserts on offer. So, I don't think I would purposely seek out the Six Bells, except for a music night. There are nicer pubs and better food available in the immediate area. But having said that, it's not a bad place to go.

If good, home-made pub fare is what you're after, then this is a pretty good option. Don't expect gourmet food (or gourmet prices). Just expect decent, home cooking in a nice little pub just off the Mill Road area of Cambridge. they serve a good selection of beers, and the atmosphere is nice and friendly, though you might find the odd wobbly chair leg. I had the sausage and mash, and it was pretty good. If you're fussy about mashed potato, then you might want to give this a miss, because the potato was quite lumpy, but personally that doesn't bother me. Served with four sausages, and a huge boat full of gravy, this made for a nice lunch with a glass of coke. The ham, egg and chips also looked very nice indeed: two fried eggs with soft yolks, and thick cut ham - no pre-packed sliced ham here.

If it's your first time and Tony serves you, true, he might have an unfortunate demeanour if you're not used to him. But he's a good guy and he and Eileen do so much for the community. Don't expect refurbished gastro nonsense (though I'm a sucker for gastro nonsense too), just a comfortable place to have good beer, home-cooked food, or music or (my favourite) the Monday quiz (with free chips).

I've lived in Cambridge for years and have only in the last few years rediscovered the Six Bells ... many local pubs have become 'theme' pubs, seeming to be more about the brewery than the customer, not so the Six Bells, it's very much at the heart of the local community. Excellent food (especially the steak on Thursday nights and the ever present ham egg and chips, and superb chilli), really good Guinness (it tastes like it does in Ireland), an interesting range of beers and so on ... there are lots of different areas so you can avoid either a quiet zone or a noisy zone, there is a pub garden / patio area at the back and a pool room and also a sofa area with toys which is great for young children, then at the front are two rooms one a bit of a snug and the other more open. The real joy of the Bells is the music ... so many different nights, an open mic every other Sunday, local musicians on Wednesdays, bluegrass, Irish, folk and then bigger band nights with everything from Cambridge legends Hedgepig to Elvis. There are knitting nights, a book club night, and a whole social world if you chose to get involved ... all very welcoming, or you can just sit and have a quiet drink or a romantic night in a corner or just chat with a whole variety of different people.Really worth turning down Covent Garden and popping in, but remember to take cash as they don't take cards.

Didn't say a word to us just snarled as we each scarily asked for our drinks & snacks then we legged it into the beer garden to get away from him & most of us were too scared to go back to get another drink.Don't think I've ever been in a place as a customer to get such an unwelcome welcome!!!!Won't go in there again :-( !!! Me, deano, smiffy and big john decided to take a cheeky gander at this pub back in summer during the heatwave after a few pints at the regal. First thing I noticed as we wuz walking up is 3 fit birds in tight leggings so already off to a grate start. We ordered sum beers and they came quite quickly, proper fancy european beer or sumthin, (smiffy dont like strong beer, makes him sloshed haha what a ledge) after we then got some snacks and weird cheesy food came (I dont like fancy food, just give me a pizza or some cheips instead of that foreign muck). Anyway two lads started fighting after they realised they were both wearin the same river island t-shirt and got the mick takin outta them, hahaha ledge
