Absolutely gutted that this Wetherspoons closed it's doors. A really handy spot to have a break, a bite to eat and continue on around Newark. A sad, sad loss.

Used this Wetherspoons whenever I visit Newark-on-Trent. Obviously, my business was not enough as it has now closed. Sad, as I've always considered this one of the better pubs. Always good beer, particularly variety, good food with friendly staff providing good service. I think Tim Martin must make his decisions purely on a profit and loss sheet. He owns some absolute hovels, Newark-on-Trent was NOT one of them. Shame!!

As a sales rep I stay away a lot and often eat in Wetherspoons. You can rely on 3 things. They are cheap, sell food as fuel, and you know what to expect. The Sir John Arderne in Newark, however, failed to live up to the usual pretty average standards of this chain. I found a table, ordered a mixed grill and a pint. The beer arrived quite quickly and the food followed in reasonable time. I enquired about condiments and was told, rather curtly, 'over there' in a manner that suggested I ought to know. I looked around and discovered where 'over there' was. The meal itself consisted of the usual array of meats one expects from a Wetherspoons mixed grill. And not having been asked when I ordered, I was pleased to see that it hadn't been over cooked. However, the pleasure stopped abruptly when I tried to eat the piece of steak. It was 90% gristle held together by strands of meat. Most of it could not be cut even with a steak knife. None of it was edible. I persevered with the rest of the food. A fatty piece of gammon and the rest I ate. When I had finished the surly serving staff, who had brought it came to take my plate away. She didn't ask, but I told her that the piece of steak was so bad I would not even take it back for my dog. At least here she displayed a sense of humour of sorts, as she chucked as she walked off. Not a word more was spoken. Luckily, Newark has other establishments which I will visit on future trips to the area. But this is one Wetherspoons that won't be seeing me again.

We then came into Newark and went to the SirJohn Arderne, another spoons, what a contrast, it is dark, dirty and the staff were also miserable ( but working in those conditions anybody might be), it beggars belief how a successful pub chain can have two totally different standards, something is clearly wrong with the middle management who allow and do not raise the issue of why the two pubs are so different and with the Newark pub almost in decay.I would not eat in there as the seating is dirty, the toilets shameful so you can only assume the kitchen has no standards, I bet the owner Tim Martin wouldnt take his family and friends in there.

“Get out, get out you b’ds and never come back!” Upon hearing these words I turned my attention to the right to see a young couple with their two infant kids being thrown out of mysterious looking building by a man in glasses and blue shirt. I was rather taken aback by the aggression but at the same time intrigued. I then glanced up at the text above the windows which read JD Wetherspoons. Still full of intrigued and excitement, I couldn’t resist the temptation to enter the threshold but first I needed a trip to the gents. I finally managed to find it after climbing the stairs and trying several doors (place reminded me of Hogwarts from that film with the magic kid) but as soon as I opened the door it felt like the apocalypse. The stench wafted straight out and it was so bad my eyes began to water. I could have sworn I also saw some paint peel off the wall too. After finally relieving myself (and throwing up) on the way out of the toilet I was them bitten by a rat. I stumbled down the corridor towards the door to the stairs thinking to myself “I’m going to make a complaint” when said door opened. Suddenly everything went quiet. The air was filled with tension. I slowly looked up at what stood in front of me, an intimidating and imposing figure. It was the man from earlier with the blue shirt and glasses. He just stood still staring at me. “Erm, hello” I nervously stuttered. He continued to just stare. I then asked him who he was. “MARK” he yelled at the top of his voice. I stumbled back a few steps in terror. “I’M MARK AND THIS IS MY GAFF!” I had no idea why he found the need to be so aggressive but it said hello to him and told him I just quietly wanted to get myself a drink. “That’s fine but don’t you ever forget who runs this joint and do ever go flirting with my girls or it’ll be the last thing you do.” To which he stormed past me and slammed a door behind him. I made my way back down the stairs and to the bar to get served by a random dark haired woman. However instead of trying to serve me a drink she very bizarrely began quoting Friedrich Nietzsche. Something about the superior man imposing duties upon himself but I wasn’t really paying attention since I just wanted a drink. She then began yelling at me about the Jews and asking for my opinion on them and that they control all the other pubs in Newark etc. I finally decided that I’d had enough and stormed out. I promptly nipped into the Queens followed by the Postie, to pubs with decent bar staff and good beer. Safe to say I’ll never be returning to Spoons.

Wife and I decided to have our Friday fish meal here, rather than driving over to Grimsby. Sadly they had run out of cod even though only early evening! Lots of annoyed customers as a result.

Came here on visit to Newark and initially had a beer. I was impressed with how fast I got served and the pub was busy. The Ritz in Lincoln should sent here for training, as their service is terrible. Came back later for food and again was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food. Service again was excellent. Yes, it is busy but do not let that put you off. I will be back on our next visit to Newark.

The place was a disgrace. Tables uncleared, heaps of food an rubbish on the floor. We walked in and decided not to stay. The worst example of Wetherspoons I have visited anywhere in the country.

One of the finest beefburgers I have had in sometime. I went classic and treated myself to additional bacon and cheese. When you throw in a pint included it can't get better than this. Service was friendly and attentive. My companions were delighted the traditional chicken wraps were still available at Newark rather than the addition of the hideous bacolisious mayonnaise served integral to Spoons wraps elsewhere lately. No, I didn't know what they were talking about either. Happy days.

We visited for lunch on a Saturday and it was quite busy. We managed to find a table and our order was taken quite quickly at the bar, and drinks served. My meal included a pint, which was perfectly ok. Food was served in a reasonable time, given how busy it was, and staff seemed friendly enough. They did seem to be run off their feet and tables were not being cleaned and cleared very quickly. The food was tasty and the portions large.

Tables needed cleaned and cleared. The food took 20 minutes to arrive at the table. After we had paid we were told it was going to be a long wait, if we had known we would have gone elsewhere. Beverage machine was dirty with spillages and were faulty, in addition there was no milk. Toilets need a major refurbishment.

Very busy this visit, don't usually go in on a Saturday lunchtime. Even so still quick to get served. I always find the food good value and good quality. Always a good selection of draught beers and at realistic prices, why can't other pubs match the ale price?

I do go for a pint from time to time, prices are very good and they offer a large variety of beers/ciders. I won't be having food again though, prices are quite cheap but quality isn't that amazing.

Good location just off the market square, I usually take my elderly mother on a Friday lunchtime after shopping on the market. This means fish and chips. The staff are always friendly and helpful, the meals are typical pub grub, decent quality and served quickly. Good beer and all at a sensible price.

I came here for lunch with my wife whilst visiting Newark. A busy place on a generally quite day in town and we just got a table, even if it was one of those high tables with the high chairs. I ordered food and drinks at the bar, I paid for it, it came, it was good, we left. My wife's happy as she likes the new Gordons pink gin. I'm not happy as I always seem to be driving and have a soft drink but the range of drinks on offer and the prices can't be bettered. Will always choose a Wetherspoons for a cheap but good meal.

Not the best whether spoons in my opinion. It was friendly, the service was quick and friendly and it was cheap. However, the pub seems tired. I don't know if it is due a facelift but it could certainly do with one. It had little or no atmosphere and no interesting features which often make whetherspoons pubs a bit different from all the rest

Visited here for a few pints overs the weekend and though generally better than my local spoons as staff were quick to serve and I actually saw dirty plates and glasses collected, it could have been better . The thing that really let then down was the collection of lab rats/ crash test dummies stood in the door way smoking , and I do mean in the door way , within the plot line of the building.

Well, to be truthful none of us had a Sunday lunch, but all choose the 'All day' breakfast instead. The food served to four adults was fast, hot and the quality fine. All the condiment bottles had been cleaned from their last use, and apart from a slightly worn table, everything was as it should be. The younger one had a child's meal, which somehow turned up with peas instead of beans, no problem, quickly sorted and all were happy. This cannot be seen as a salubrious eatery, but the prices are exceptional, and the staff very welcoming. We shall be back...

This is a Weatherspoons pub and as such it is well appointed offering value for money. I sometimes take my elderly mother here on a Friday lunchtime after shopping at the outdoor market. Stick with the meal of the day and a drink is included at a very fair price.

Staying in the area for a week and always like to try the local village pub. This one has to be one of the best, especially for food. Had lunch on Saturday absolutely amazing pork belly tapas with fries plus mac n cheese and went back the same evening for specialty burger plus a grilled garlic chicken all things worthy of a 10 out of 10 some of the best food ever tasted. Add to that very reasonable prices lovely staff friendly locals and impeccably clean toilets. Wish this pub was in our home town

Stayed here overnight after going to the nearby Race course Really nice place with its history and clocks! Friendly staff and a very efficient waitress at breakfast. Bed wasn’t the most comfortable but only stayed for one night, otherwise would have requested another room. To be fair we were given that option upon our arrival. One other downside was that the neighbouring room complained about the noise of our TV, which wasn’t actually that loud. The adjoining walls are clearly paper thin. All in all we would use the place again if needed.

A first class meal, without blaring music, you could really relax and enjoy the conversation . We both chose the steak and it was as good as any I have ever eaten.
