We Visited The Red lion at Thurgarton today as a last minute decision We were welcomed by friendly staff and took our drinks order.. Although we hadn’t booked for lunch we asked if we were looking to dine and so we were fitted in to our Suprise with every table looking busy. The meal was Fantastic and service also making us feel extremely welcome from start to finish What a wonderful experience which was faultless in every way N&L

Popped in for a couple of beers with a friend on a quiet Tuesday lunchtime. We were heartily welcomed by the lady behind the bar; I caught her name as Meleena which I’m sure I’ve spelt incorrectly but she’s worth a special mention as she was friendly, polite, informative and competent - a round peg in a round hole, if ever there was one, can’t fault her! We had the Camden Stout to drink which tasted certainly as good as Guinness, imo. Didn’t eat but the menu looked impressive so I’ll be back with my better half! Recommend.

Fantastic lunchtime meal. Hostess was attentive, friendly and helpful. Had the fixed price menu - great value and the mushroom starter was divine. Thoroughly recommended.

After visiting fairly regularly I’ve found the food to be great. Consistent in quality. Beautiful pub in a lovely village. But it’s let down by the landladies poor attitude. On my last visits we were made to feel like an inconvenience and she was what I can only describe as ignorant and rood. The three other people with me were quite shocked as how hostile she was. She comes across very angry, even her staff looked confused and uncomfortable! This isn’t the first time this has happened. But you give people the benefit of doubt as we can all have bad days. Seems it’s not just a bad day but a bad attitude! What a shame. So if you’re happy to be made to feel like an inconvenience, be spoken to like crap when she’s not ignoring you, but want great food then this is the pub for you. What a shame.

What makes a great pub?? Simple answer the staff, the two lovely young ladies looked after us very well, made us both feel very welcome, food was was delicious and all at a very reasonable price.

Awful customer service ruins the place. Booked a table for 8:30pm for a celebration, got a phone call at noon asking if we could bring the booking forward- we couldn’t due to work and time it takes to travel and stated ‘’we’ll even struggle to make it 8:30 tbh’. Got there 8:35pm and were told kitchen closed 8:30 sharp and we wouldn’t be seated, no notice, nothing! Appalling attitude from the woman behind the bar. No point in offering 8:30pm reservations if you simply don’t want to be there. Shame, not coming back and I advise you save your money and do the same, far better places with professional staff who understand customer service and actually want to work.

Just been for the set meal 2 course for my partner's birthday. From entering we were greeted by friendly staff and shown to our table. Food was delicious, service was second to none by a friendly, polite young lady. All staff were attentive would highly recommend. Compliments to the chef and all staff working this evening. Was my first trip here - had 40 mins to spare to wait for the bus. Perhaps the end of a long day and people wanting to pack up but not sure I will be back a customer is a customer at anytime of day.

After a lovely walk on a hot summers day it's great to get a cold pint of ipa here. Great bar staff made us very welcome.

Booked for Sunday lunch for my birthday treat from my son . On arrival no problem to be shown to our table and asked if we would like drinks , however after the initial drink offer the service was terrible constantly having to call over staff to either ask to order or ask them to clear the table , many staff members would walk past our table without clearing or service. It took over two hours to be served a two coarse meal ! Unbelievable! . I did send an email to let them know that the service was the worst I have ever received and that some training and advice to his staff was needed , I received a reply from the manager to apologise and said that they had other complaints that day regarding service he apologised and offered a discount voucher to give them another chance to visit with hopefully better service. However the voucher never came and that says a lot for there interest in there customers satisfaction. So unfortunately I will not be returning here as there are far more better serviced eateries around with a far better experience and far more attention to detail. The food however was lovely so well done to the chef , your problem is the very poor service spoils your efforts, so for that I feel sorry for you . My advice is stick to what you know this pub also could do with some maintenance the ladies toilet has lots of mould on the walls and you can smell it when you walk in , not great for a not cheap place to eat . Sad but time to leave this place behind and hope that it gets it’s problems sorted .

Delicious Sunday Lunch with all the trimmings. Plenty of it, hot and very tasty. Very friendly, helpful staff.

First visit.plenty of seating inside and out. Two courses for £20. Excellent food and nice service. Staff were nice and helpful. Decent handpumped ale. Good place to visit. Would go again.

Had a great lunch, lovely atmosphere, fantastic food and a really attentive team. It was clear all the diners were made to feel welcome and well looked after. Great place to eat or just a drink in an evening. I have tried both. See you guys again soon.

We have eaten here on a few occasions recently and the food has always been excellent. Sunday dinner today was delicious. I visited with my wife and sister in law. (Her first visit) Beef was chosen by all of us and it was first class. Generous portions! We followed with 3 rhubarb desserts. Again first class! Friendly service with a smile. Couldn’t ask for more. Nearly 3 hours later and after an excellent coffee time to leave with a full stomach and a smile on our face.

Came here today with my family, amazing meal and food and drink. Prices amazing for what you get served! Place was clearly fully booked, with every reason to be! Manager handled a very rude customer very professionally, it’s a shame people like this think they are entitled to the world but alas, that is hospitality for you! And well done to the manager for keeping her cool! Keep up the good work guys! 😊 x

Went in for a drink asked to switch table to bar, was told there was seats at bar,to make way for diners, four who were reserved, allegedly, although table set for two! There was no reserved sign on table, we were brought menus, so not reserved really. There was no seat at bar, so had to sit outside. Not a place for drinkers or fans of the truth.

Fabulous evening at the Tasting Menu event last night. Really innovative and delicious menu with well-paired wine flights. For me, the beef dripping candle was the star of the show. Keep up the great work, Red Lion team!

The Red Lion is an excellent pub with good food and real ale. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Nice to be back in the area that I grew up in. A good place to meet friends.

Visited on Monday with relatives from Australia. 10 out of 10 for the food. I had the chicken Kiev, absolutely delicious and I was told the other 3 dishes were also delicious 😋

Normally excellent, but recently the actual menu prices did not reflect those posted on website (Jan) and when I asked for any beer between 4 and 5% (the one I wanted had run out) was offered Guiness 0.0

Wonderful vegetarian tart, beetroot was cooked to perfection. Thank you to the chef for taking the initiative and providing a delicious meal.

I love this place and the food is always really good! My only complaint is the size of the Scallops which are the smallest I’ve ever seen! They taste lovey but I think they cost £14 which isn’t worth it for the size

I was quite disappointed with my visit earlier this week. I have visited the red lion many times before and the food and service is usually amazing although we were greeted by a very unwelcoming host that made us feel rather uncomfortable. The atmosphere was very unpleasant, no music, food left on tables from what looked like staff, quite cold and a rude and dismissive member of staff. I have not marked the food down as we decided not to eat on this occasion due to the service we received and as mentioned I have always been happy with the food before. Wouldn’t be rushing back after this unfortunately.

Had a wonderful Sunday lunch will definatley be back.

3rd roast dinner here in as many months. I won’t risk going anywhere else now, why bother when you find somewhere great? The beef is absolutely gorgeous, so tender and full of flavour. The veg is perfect, blanched to crunchy perfection. Roast carrots, insane mash and real gravy. The manageress never stops running around making sure everyone is enjoying their stay and the atmosphere is peak English cosy pub. Side note… went on New Year’s Eve and had potentially the best Caesar salad ever. Ps The house red and Sauvignon are excellent and they have Mahou on draft

Too early for beer or food. Had a coffee & viewed the menus. A la carte ok. But three framed past tasting menus looked interesting. £70 for food. £30 for t'wine flight.

"Wow" is all you need to know... We stayed with Basil the pony down the road and booked in here for our evening meal. The host was lovely and friendly, and the food was incredible! They were really good about adjusting meals for our fussy children, too. Highly recommend it. Thank you for having us!

We Visited The Red lion at Thurgarton after booking for a Lunchtime table. This fails to to disappoint as always made welcome and so enjoy the High level of Food the Red Lion Can produce Ordered from their Al le Carte Menu which had a very wide Selection on Offer The Food was Exceptional with Wonderful Presentation and also great flavours It was noticeable the Out Of House Service was slightly challenged maybes due to amount of staff on Shift during our Visit but the Staff were trying their hardest to bridge this noticeable gap The Lady Bar Manager was noticed trying extremely hard to manage this but was most noticeable when the Bar was unattended for periods out of the Staffs control Our Visit was the day after boxing day so maybes this was a contributing factor With this said I would fully recommend a Visit to The Red Lion where you won't be disappointed with the Level of Food they do offer

Booked meal for 8 to celebrate Xmas Most had turkey which was not roasted but cooked in water bath. Very bland but not dry. Not many vegetables very mediocre. Dry stuffing obviously cut out of block. Gravy very mediocre and not enough. Also all meals not hot enough. Fish and chips very mediocre cooked with skin on in too much batter. Chips far too big and fat and not cooked. 2 cho olate brownie desserts ordered were cold and hard served with cream. Very disappointing. I've never had a brownie like it. Presumably straight out of the freezer. Would come again or recommend.

We Celebrated Christmas here on Christmas Eve. The ambience was great as was the service. We enjoyed a delicious meal of chicken liver parfait and roast turkey. So enjoyable and great value. Thank you for a lovely evening.

Called on a Monday tea time. Lovely food piping hot! Friendly staff who looked after us well thank you. I had the turkey which was amazing my husband had the steak which he said was delicious too. Menu choices were spot on something for everyone. The place was trimmed up lovely for Christmas, very cosy and festive

Nice Christmas lunch and professional waitress. Turkey portion too large for us but probably well received but younger people would be pleased. Great potatoes and parsnips and carrot. Stuffing dry and cut out of a square block. Brussels only shown the hot water and I like them cooked but not mushed. Overall a nice meal and will go again.

What a great pub just 4 minutes from our accommodation. Lovely welcome on arrival, we were first for the evening. Nice and warm, lovely atmosphere to get cosy. The food was absolutely delicious. We both had perfectly cooked steaks served with amazing chips and a great salad. Choices of sauces to compliment. Very good wine list with something for everyone. Definitely recommend this place. We both liked it so much we are returning tonight to try something else from the menu, which also offers a great variety of dishes. Well done to all.

First of all, excellent food. The pie and bone marrow gravy were fantastic, as were the scallops. However, really poor service. We were sat at our table at 5:05, our main didn't arrive until past 6pm. Had this been a busy day with lots of diners then it would have been understandable, however there were no more than 8 customers in the building, and not all of them were eating. The staff seemed more concerned with talking with each other (loudly) than attending to their patrons. Not once were we asked if we would like anymore drinks other than the one we ordered on arrival. Lovely location, excellent food, but the front of house staff would be best advised to improve their service skills.

Updated September 2023 What a great team here serving excellent pizza and parmesan chips with fabulous drinks service too. We've had the pleasure of celebrating our daughter's post wedding gathering in April and our new son in law's birthday in September. Friendly and welcoming. September 2021 We had a great gathering for family and friends to celebrate a 30th birthday. Staff were friendly, welcoming and helpful. They worked tirelessly to make the event go smoothly. The decor is lovely. Pizzas were great and I would love to return to sample the menu in more detail. Thank you to all involved behind the bar and in the kitchen.

Have just had a fantastic Sunday lunch yet again. The beef and roast potatoes were both excellent. The place was very busy but we were seated on time and service was very good. We are local to the area and lucky enough to have some really good eateries nearby but think this is the best for Sunday lunch. Also love their Haddock and Chips.

So today I found that great Sunday lunch venue that we love to find. 7 family members and 2 youngsters.All 9 meals were really delicious and cooked to perfection served piping hot.All the staff were so helpful too, special mention for our waitress Lauren thank you.

Had a pleasant evening . All OK and would like to come back again. On the night we were there i am assuming most of the staff were new and inexperienced. Service was rather hit and miss.Hopefully a one off. For that reason marked it as a four that being said we would return as food was good and setting very pleasant.

Our fourth Sunday lunch here in recent months and never disappointed, the food is excellent, lovely presentation and always great flavours and consistent quality, lovely relaxed atmosphere and friendly efficient staff. Feel the price reflects the quality. Have also visited for evening meal for family occasion and again all generations really enjoyed meal and atmosphere. Would highly recommend, one of nicest Sunday lunches in the area.

Had the tasting menu at the Red Lion last night. It was excellent. Each course was well presented and the food was delicious. We didn’t have the flight of wines, but chose our own selection. There was a good turn out, as it appears to be a very popular venue. Would definitely go again.

My wife and I visited for Sunday lunch. After a friendly greeting we were shown to our table and had drinks within minutes. Staters were the mushrooms on toast and soup of the day. I had a beef dinner and my wife had a chicken dinner. All of the meals were excellent and Served piping hot. Highly recommended

Everything about this place is spot on, the food is fabulous and moreish. The only reason for the 4 stars is when we arrived and sat at the table it had not been cleaned properly from the previous meal. We did not see this until we sat down as gravey was around the edges of the table. My wife had gravey all over her top and bottoms. She spoke with someone and asked them to clean it up but sadly it was still there when we returned. We cleaned it ourselves and left the napkins on the edge of the table to be removed but they stayed there until the end of our night.

Despite how busy the restaurant was the staff worked so hard to insure our evening out was as outstanding as always. The food was perfectly cooked and presented and represented great value. This is one of the best restaurants around. Thanks to the staff.

Wow, what an amazing place! One of, if not the best gastro pub in Nottinghamshire! The food is first class and the service is next level. Front of house lady (so sorry I can’t remember her name) was so welcoming and professional, made our anniversary feel really special along with the waitresses. Was absolutely lovely. Went on drive and ended up here, it was a whim! It also ended up being a Village Night, and we got offered a FREE pork and stuffing cob! This is our local; son and partner home for the weekend so booked for Sunday lunch, which was great quality. We all had roasts (beef nice and pink, pork with crisp fat), superbly cooked and generous portions. No rooms for puds.Strongly recommend.

I’ll start with the positives , lovely staff all the waitresses were great , very attentive and friendly . The actual pub itself was cosy and welcoming The menu sounded interesting , we did need to ask a few questions before we ordered . This is where it went wrong, the manager was so rude , patronising treated us a little like we were plebs, who had no idea what “fine dining” was . We completely know what fine dining is , this isn’t it ! No starters so can’t comment, the mains, pie and mash looked great. I did taste the gravy incredibly salty, fish n chips looked a little greasy and the fish still had the skin on. A mountain of over seasoned peas , again a lot of salt . I had the lukewarm chicken with cold potatoes and equally cold slimy mushrooms , good flavour, however I do prefer my food to be at least warm . It went even more horribly wrong with the massively over priced desserts , the raw rhubarb- apologies “ Al dente “ 🙄 “ this is our take on a crumble …. You quite clearly have no clue, you person who has no idea about fine dining “ the smug, rude manager may as well have said , was not great . To be fair they did take a couple of desserts off the final bill . I should think so , at our suggestion . It’s a new menu apparently, perhaps if you had allowed us to provide some constructive feedback rather than looking down your nose at us . You are a pub trying too hard , concentrate on the usual popular pub meals and do them well , Reduce the salt and serve your food hot is my advice . From someone who enjoys eating and cooking great food We won’t be back , we wouldn’t recommend either . It was average at best , too salty , served too cold ( even if the “ our take on rhubarb “ was supposed to be cold, I’m sure the mains weren’t ) Can I also suggest sending your manager back to charm school , £300 spent on a mediocre meal .

Place is trying to hard to be something it’s not. It’s a local pub that’s trying to do fine dining and sadly misses the mark. £15 for 3 rubber scallops is poor and the fillet steak was over cooked. Menu just doesn’t cater to pub goers. My recommendation would be to simplify the menu and serve the pub classics well, this will bring people back. On the plus side the staff are quite nice although they did forget a few things we asked for.
