Exceptional. I’m not entirely sure where the bad reviews have come from. We arrived as a large group and were offered a space to seat and have a drink before sitting for lunch and look through the menu. The service and food was faultless throughout, I couldn’t reccomend it enough!

What an amazing lunch. Service was faultless, food was delicious, wine list was extensive and catered for dietary well. Loved our lunch and can’t wait to come back. Not our first visit and not our last. Any of these negative reviews need to lighten up. This place is a gem.

We booked a table for 3 people at 1.30. We arrived at 1.25 and it would be difficult to say we were “greeted” it was more of a grudging acknowledgement. We asked to go to our table but we’re told (not asked) to sit in the garden and have a drink. This not what we wanted to do but felt we had no choice. Having been served with the obligatory pre lunch drinks, we waited for someone to take our order……. and we waited. Finally after 20 minutes I approached a staff member who was chatting with her colleague and asked politely if someone could take our order. I received the curt response that someone would be with us “soon”. After another 20 minutes we decided enough was enough. I approached the same staff member and said we wanted to leave and I went to the bar with her to settle the bill for the unwanted drinks. (I was not going to risk another long wait to pay the bill in the garden). My reasonable expectation was that there may have been some mild curiosity as to why we were leaving. There was nothing. I have lived and worked in many countries and have enjoyed hospitality in many forms. I have never experienced such poor service or treated so discourteously. 45 minutes after arriving, we left. It was meant to be a farewell family lunch before I left for the Middle East and not to return until Xmas. A day ruined by some very rude people.

Our experience over decades has been excellent. The food is superb and the service is always friendly. Maybe those who prefer minimalist London restaurants find the period piece charm not to their liking but we and all our friends appreciate the relaxed atmosphere in a stunning location well away from the rat race. The owner, Julie, is always on hand and all credit to her for maintaining top standards when other similar restaurants have failed. How she manages to employ staff in such a rural spot is beyond me. Sometimes they might make the most minor slip ups but they are all helpful and do their best. We eat out regularly but this is a restaurant - not a gastro pub - which we are happy to return to time and again despite it not being on our doorstep.

Underwhelmed by the food, the customer service and the experience. We went for Mother’s Day and told them in advance that our 18 year old is vegetarian and asked about food choices for her. They offered her a vegetarian roast which consisted of half a roast onion and half of a swede (for which they charged us £25!). Our beef roast tasted no better than average and the roast potatoes were so crispy that it hurt to bite into them. To make it worse they brought the food out too quickly but then it took 30 minutes for our bill to arrive. We won’t be back

Our visit was most disappointing. A most peculiar and somewhat chaotic welcome, followed by poor communication throughout the meal. Two of the three meals were broadly inedible. The restaurant appeared bereft of attentive staff. I watched to see if anyone noticed how displeased my guests were, pushing food around their plates. Not a sense of it. Five persons now unlikely to return to this place. It is simply not to the standard one expects.

The Napier, set in the delightful Chiltern countryside, has gone through something of a renaissance with the arrival of a remarkably talented chef, Andy Lewis. His dishes are enticingly presented with an abundance of taste and textures. Highly imaginative in the way he uses the seasonality of ingredients to enhance his recipes. And with consummate skill, he selects those sympathetic to the main ingredient rather than overwhelm it with competing flavours. Consistency is another of his virtues and a Michelin star surely beckons. The relaxed and welcoming environment Julia and her team provide will ensure we will return time and time again. Bryan K

Disappointing from very start. We were looking forward to a special lunch but staff meet n greet and attentiveness was indifferent. Food was luke warm with very small portions of accompanying sides - even when told staff were ‘slightly’ sorry. Wine was not delivered to the table despite 3 reminders. Generally they were over inflated and overated .

This place trades on its reputation clearly. A decent Sunday lunch it’s fair to say. But one of the four of us is gluten intolerant and has some allergies. We weren’t asked about allergies when booking. Although the menu asks the customer for details of any special dietary requirements, we were told “This is very short notice, so there’s little we can do. You’ll just have the risotto as rice and garlic.” We were made to feel uncomfortable. And when ordering a dessert, our friend was asked “What, after all that…!?” - more disrespect for her condition. Won’t be back. Shame.

I thought the setting was beautiful and the atmosphere was very pleasant on a cosy Saturday evening: However my main course was incredibly bland and dull. About as tasteless a plate of food as you could encounter. Starter not hugely better. Very strange decision to serve wine out of completely inappropriate glasses with very wide tops so you all the flavour will escape. Not acceptable when buying proper wine. Whilst the setting was charming, I thought the offering was very disappointing.

We dropped in for drinks about 130pm and are convinced the older woman who is front of house had an issue with our race. She told us they were quite pushed despite there being more empty tables and less than 20 customers You told us in a patronising manner to try the pubs down the road We were recommended this place but will not be going there again.Seen from previous reviews this woman treats other people badly but there's no need for blatant racism. Interesting management doesn't comment on reviews.

The lasting impression of this place is the frosty welcome and charmless if not downright incompetent front of house and overall unacceptable service. There was a complete failure to engage with us from arrival to departure with dishes almost slammed down in front of us. Here's a tip: if you can't be bothered to show paying customers some kind of basic courtesy then get another job that isn't customer facing. What a shame because the food is very good. The kitchen deserves better.

Relaxed lunch in this beautiful old building set in tranquil Buckinghamshire countryside. A lovely glass of champagne in the bar on arrival before moving to our table for lunch. It was a bit like revisiting a simpler time, no themes or gimmicks, just excellent, quiet and unobtrusive service, of lovely food and having our red wine decanted was a rare treat. A sunny afternoon, also meant we were able to enjoy our dessert wine and coffee in the pretty cottage gardens after our lunch. Despite living just down the road for most of my life I've never been before, but will definitely be back.

BEYOND SHABBY CHIC !!!! The food is excellent but their chefs should consider moving on to a restaurant where its front of house standards reflects their culinary skills! The restaurant and terrace are a collective mess ! Relying on the fad of ‘shabby chic’ for your reputation as a restaurant has long gone but the Sir Charles Napier either doesn’t care or doesn’t see the neglect under their noses !!!! What remains is neglect in the form of non existent maintenance, refurbishment and housekeeping! Despite outstanding dishes so well prepared and presented, you are constantly aware of the inferior and amateurish service as well as the appalling standards of cleanliness and soft furnishings! Cobwebs and thick dust abound with threadbare sofas and chairs everywhere ! I could go on to point out unacceptable standards within the front of house operation !!! If you are short sighted and don’t mind eating in mayhem and disorder where nothing is of a consistent standard, then it’s worth venturing into the world of a gone by era that is the Sir Charles Napier as the food is exceptionally good !

I visited this lovely place with a stunning garden and setting on the wooded escarpment of he Chilterns for a family event. The menu looked very interesting but had not realized it was nouvelle cuisine and was dismayed by quantities as I enjoy my food and appreciate dishes I would not cook myself. However I think you go here for the service which was very good and for the venue. The portions are very small however beautifully decorated. A 3 year old could have made my starter of goats cheese and slivers of coloured beetroot looking rather lost on its plate. It seemed the cheese had been cut off the block shaped a little and then just popped about half a dozen slivers of beetroot. It was boring. I noticed the crab was extremely small portion too with a leaf or two on it. The main meat dishes had a reasoanble portion of meat but venison topped with inedible kale barely cooked and not much else did not seem a bargain. The partridge was excellent but the veg non existent , a tiny roast partridge and a dolly's portion of mashed potato. Such a shame with excellent meat, The jus and jelly accompaniment were excellent. Obviously not heard of your 5 a day. !! The puddings however were really good and looked very enticing . The coffee was good too and so were the truffles. I cannot fault t he service either. However it is not for someone who has a good appetite and although I do not want large portions meaness with veg is very annoying or lack of them which is what happens these days. Obviously nouvelle cuisine is not for me but you do not get this impression from the menus on the websie.

Just off the M40 we stopped here for lunch on our way to the Cotswolds. A great find. This gastro pub is situated in lovely grounds and we really could not fault it. In our opinion it is well on its way to regaining its Michelin Star (assuming they want it !)The food was excellent and the choice was perfect. Great service in comfortable surroundings. Highly recommended.

Off the beaten track with a lovely open garden and excellent menu and wine choice. Not for diners in a hurry. Savour the atmosphere. Enjoy the garden. If the weather is cold there will be a log fire burning. If the weather is warm relax with pre dinner drinks and enjoy the view.

FourFour of us visited for a 1.30pm booking! We were offered drinks in the garden! An hour after our order was taken we were taken into restaurant grounds! Meanwhile I was trying to explain that I was a vegan and their were vegetarians in the party! having been assured they were veggie friendly, we thought all would be fine! boy was I was wrong! The menu was vegan/vegetarian I’m friendly to the point that I had to explain what needed to be done so I could actually have some lunch! it was hard work! No understanding/idea of the concept! Service was so slow to the point we wanted to walk out! 3Hours later! Yes 3 Hours later, we tried to get the bill! Even then we had to ask 3 times! Eventually lost the will to live!!!Worst dining experience ever! They need to get with the times andEmploy competent staff

A second visit to this glorious Chiltern dining pub and the impression gained was just as positive as that retained from our first adventure. All aspects are as you would wish, but stand out performance is found in the wine list and in the welcome. All else could be forgiven of course, but there is no need because everything is just so. We are looking forward to another visit before too long.

This was the worst dining out experience that I have ever had! On arrival we were ignored, when finally acknowledged we had to ask if we could order drinks to be then told “ we will come and find you”. We waited in the garden for 45 minutes before going ourselves to find someone to take our order. I asked if we should follow them to the table to be told there wasn’t one for us yet! We had booked for an hour earlier! We had booked an outside table ages before as this was a special annniversary. We were shown to a table on our own in the empty restaurant inside and when we said we had booked an outside table the lady ( possibly the owner ) rolled her eyes and told us that obviously everyone wants a table outside when it was sunny She spoke to us in a patronising way in front of other guests leaving us feeling humiliated and like second class citizens. We should have left at this point but had arrived by taxi and had booked a return taxi which was not available. The food was distinctly average, certainly not worth the money. During the meal nobody asked how our food was, offered to top up our wine or even offered us water. We have never been treated so badly in a restaurant. At no point were we given an apology. If the lady running the restaurant is an employee then she needs sacking immediately but if she is the owner then shame on her!! If I could have given no stars I would have done so, the only saving grace is that the setting is beautiful. This was a very special occasion ruined by arrogance, ignorance and a total lack of care for its customers. Needless to say we will never return and urge others to go anywhere but here to eat.

Visited for lunch today. Seated inside due to rain so missed out on lovely gardens. They handled social distancing very well while still making it a pleasant dining experience. Food was presented very well and was very enjoyable with lovely flavours. Very nice atmosphere which is unfortunately lacking now in a lot of other restaurants. Would recommend.

A very pleasant cafe with outdoor seating in the picturesque village of Dorchester on Thames, just outside Oxford. Parking is easy and there are horses and llamas to see in a neighbouring field. The food is tasty, well presented and reasonably priced. My salt beef sandwich was excellent, and my wife enjoyed her chocolate and walnut cake. The village and its abbey are also worth a visit.

Great lunch, really friendly team. Thanks so much. Honest lunch without all the jazz and bling you can get from other local restaurants and pocket friendly.

Nice cafe situated in the old bank. Staff are always pleasant and nice choice of cakes. Tea nicely served in pots on wooden trays and cakes nicely served on wooden platters. Reasonably priced. Tiffin cake was nice but a bit stodgy. Very dog friendly with free doggy treats. The cleanest toilet ever! Unfortunately there was an overpowering background chemical smell in the cafe. Would definitely visit again.

Visited twice this week. It’s a wonderful place with friendly staff. That’s why it gets so busy! There’s an area to work if you want, and an area upstairs with toddler books and toys as well as games you can rent for an hour or two. The coffee used to be lovely but I think they must be buying a different brand because this is foul - really bitter with a nasty aftertaste. It may be, of course, that the water is tainted (Thames Water have been adding more chlorine lately to overcome traces of sewage in the tap water) or that the machine is due for a clean. Whatever it is, I hope the coffee goes back to what it used to be! As I say, I visited twice this week and, both times, the coffee was awful. The cakes are quite delightful and the quiche I had yesterday was light and fluffy.
