The Sidings Hotel & Restaurant in Hambleton

My fiance' and I spent a lovely Valentine's weekend at Sidings. We LOVED every second of it! The rooms are warm, cozy and very clean - they're in real train carriages! - and we had the most amazing meal at the restaurant - which is also in a train carriage! We went for the full meat meze -everything was so delicious and tasty. Best experience ever - we'll definitely be back!

What was meant to be a day at the sidings the midland Pullman came through with the driver giving 3 tones

When you have been having a hard day and just want a quick one as you watch the sunset. This is the perfect place to do so. Ps. If you like your trains this is a must as the main line is well in the garden.

Fantastic place to have a birthday lunch on a rainy January day, sitting in a classic railway carriage watching the trains go by. The lunch menu is great value for money with plenty of choice and all of the food was excellent. Save room for dessert, the bougatsa is outstanding! The guy serving us was really friendly and attentive, I can highly recommend a visit here.

We have just returned from a thoroughly relaxing and very enjoyable Sunday Lunch. We were a party of 7; 2 children, a teenager and 4 adults and we all enjoyed the food, the service and the location! Between us we tried almost everything on the Sunday Lunchtime Menu and all the food was delicious. The staff were great- they gave you space to choose and time to enjoy the meal, they were friendly, professional and caring. The restaurant provides excellent value for money and we would thoroughly recommend it. We will definitely be returning to try out the Greek menu - it looked and smelled delicious! Funnily enough - the trains were not a distraction, they were just an entertainment - not noisy, just the occasional whoosh and a source of conversation…… thank you to all for a lovely Sunday lunch 👌👍

Didn't stay over we went for a meal and it was lovely as always. Friendly staff, literally every member of staff spoke to us even if just passing. Food was great.

This lovely old railway carriage restaurant and hotel is still going strong after many years of producing good food and has a lovely ambience near a busy railway line. The trains only sound fairly quiet in here tho you get an ace view. I just popped in to ask for a Bacon Butty and a cappuccino. Well!!!!!! A gentleman here opened the door for me with a smile. Good start. Then another one lit the log fire. Even better. My drink came first and then this amazing sandwich. Delicious bacon. Honestly the best I ever had. Lots of bacon and fresh salad. Smashing food and smashing service. Really nice people. I can't wait to come back here and have a lovely evening meal one night. Yum yum yum!!!

A fair bit outside of York and you need transport to get to it . Great view of trains from window which was reason.we went there . Service was very slow considering we were the only people there . Food reasonable not expensive and gluton free food available another reason.for visit Perhaps the service buses could be routed via the restaurant and accommodation. As road into premises has no pavements

The restaurant (which is also a hotel) has a unique draw, as you can eat dinner inside an old train carriage. I ended up going for the mushroom risotto last time, which was a very generous serving for the reasonable price of £13. The restaurant also hosts a bar, decorated with an outstanding array of train and transport memorabilia. Typically when we visit we got the more standard drinks, but on the last occasion there was a bartender in training who gave us all a free ouzo based cocktail that he'd been experimenting with. Overall the staff are friendly, and I'd recommend as a great place to eat.

Whilst not the most plushest of places to stay The Sidings is just great. Warm snug bar area with log burner, train carriage dining car, fabulous food and oh so comfy beds.. we’d stay again as soon as we can.

What a wonderful place where you dine in old railway carriages and the main building is an old railway station. You can actually stay in the hotel which are also converted carriages. We got a lovely welcome and the staff couldn't do enough for us. Lovely food!

An absolute gem of a place! We highly recommend it to anyone coming to York for a holiday or short break. Only a short drive from the city centre. The carriage rooms are really snug, warm and cosy, the bed was really comfy. The food is fantastic. The staff were friendly and professional. Thank you for a unique & wonderful stay!

Decided to have an office meal out. Lovely setting plenty of trains to see on the main east coast line that passes within a few metres of the venue. we all throughly enjoyed our meals I had filo pastry and Kelefirico bot of which we gorgeous.

Had a lovely three course meal. Service was great and the food delicious!

Amazing is the only word I can think of. The food was divine, great portion sizes (looking at a previous review I don't see what they were on about!), service was brilliant by the two friendly lads waiting on us, I had the lamb kleftico as my main and I don't think I've tasted anything quite like it. The atmosphere really did set this restaurant aside. The old railway carriage was oozing atmosphere, I could've happily sat there all night. Plenty of trains to watch as they pass on the east coast mainline outside too. Prices were reasonable for this type of dining too. I'd recommend to anyone I know to give the sidings a visit for dinner, be it a couples evening, anniversary or a treat. Thank you for a great meal.

Very quirky and niche hotel, but nostalgic at the same time. I stayed when it was warm, but I can imagine it will be cold in the winter with the original windows.

This was a welcome return visit to this well located bar/restaurant with its dining carriage and view out to the trainline. The food was delicious and the service fantastic. Our server Jack was very helpful as was his female colleague (sorry don't know her name) and although the wait for the food was on the long side it was certainly worth waiting for. It is also very reasonably priced which is a very good reason for a visit!!

We are in York for the weekend and we're looking for somewhere near our hotel for dinner out as a change. This restaurant is by the railway line and has old railway carriages as part of its restaurant offering. We took our seats and had a look at the menu. It's Greek and I really wasn't sure which of the many options to choose...so we went for the Meat Meze. The setting, the staff and service and the food were all fantastic. If you're in this area it's well worth seeking this place out.

stayed here for a wedding and the staff provided a warm and friendly service, the food while on the more pricey end was delicious in every bite. The rooms are small (as to be expected of a train cart) and only one disabled room which was a let down. accessibility wise it was manageable but the aesthetics and service were fab x

Fantastic food… five star. But room was of course a little noisy being next to the railway. This is a MUST for anyone who is a train fan. Exciting for young and old. But take your earplugs. Food in the carriage in the evening was superb. Worth going just for a meal. Staying in a train carriage quirky as well.

We had a really lovely Saturday night dinner, seated in a rail carriage with a great view of the railway tracks. The staff were attentive and very friendly. We all enjoyed the well-cooked and perfectly seasoned food for all three courses. The wine list was quite reasonable too. A very enjoyable evening.

Just by chance after finding this place on Google we arrived not knowing what to expect. Railway carriages that you can book to stay in and a fabulous restaurant . We were glad we didn't look at photos before we arrived as it would have spoilt the surprise. So take my word for it , if you like the unusual but fabulous then go for it. We were in the area for an EV show for 3 days staying at a known hotel chain in Wetherby. We looked for somewhere to eat in the vicinity and found The Sidings, top rate food and service with great music and ambience, we wished we had booked to stay there for the 3 nights. Very very reasonable prices. This place is a must visit.

Great food, lovely atmosphere, good service and reasonable prices - what more can you ask for. Quirkyplace with the Pulman coaches and so close to the main line and really works creating a lovely ambiance.

Went on a Saturday lunch time. The food presentation was amazing, the food was delicious, the service was excellent (the staff were so good) and we got to dine in the carriage which we loved. My husband claims he doesn’t like Greek food but already wants to return. He had the Stifado. My only reason for not giving it full marks is that would be perfection - I’d go a 4.5 if I’d been able. We now want to stay the night.

This place is fantastic! However if you don't like trains, or the noise of trains, think carefully if you intend to stay over, after all you are right next to the 'East Coast Mainline' from York to the North, and the trains run 24hrs. The staff, the food, the ambience and the overall feel of 'The Sidings' is amazing. I have never met such friendly, passionate and wonderful people before. You can tell they really love this place. I opted to stay for 2 nights, but I enjoyed the experience so much I extended it to 3 nights. These guys really do go out of their way to make you feel welcome and valued. Cannot recommend 'The Sidings' highly enough. Will definitely be rebooking in the future, possibly for longer.

What a lovely place in York, you can sit and enjoy a delicious meal in one of their train carriages and watch all the different trains go past. The food is excellent and the service is great. If you are looking for a unique experience, this place is highly recommended.

The Sidings is a fantastic Greek Cypriot restaurant. The food is superb, the atmosphere is great and the staff are brilliant. Attending their Greek themed evenings is an absolute must. Think along the lines of Greek Cypriot food, music/ dancing and plate smashing! Can’t wait to return

As a railway enthusiast, I was keen to visit this establishment when invited to the booking by five others. I was always aware of it but never got round to it until this weekend past. Firstly, let me make it clear that my review refers only to to the dining part as we were not staying here in the accommodation. On arrival at about 1.45 p.m. for Sunday lunch, the place had almost Marie Celeste feel about it. Sunday lunchtime and it was almost empty! Having eventually been approached by a staff member we were offered the choice of eating in the dining carriage but informed that the heating wasn't working there or in the main body of the place. We all decided to eat from the fixed menu...£20 for two courses with no obvious choice of sweet option instead of a starter. One of our party had soup and actually had to ask for a spoon. Next, the main courses eventually came and the waiter asked who the salmon was for. Nobody had mentioned salmon or ordered it so one unfortunate had to sit and watch while the rest of us started eating. Her meal eventually came with apologies and compensation of extra gravy! All of our meals were swimming in the brown stuff already. Even Wetherspoons give each individual a small gravy boat to allow for individual taste. Needless to say, the waiter had to be asked to provide sauces. Portion control of vegetables was definitely in evidence. Those who had pork commented it was a bit tough but in fairness the beef eaters faired better. Only two were having beer and even this went awry with the wrong beer being brought. We decided not to bother with coffee or tea and left underwhelmed and disappointed. I am not in the business of merciless slagging and my experience and comments in this case are in the hope that improvements can be made. Somebody needs to get a grip of this place as standards need improving.

We had a fantastic family meal here. It was a cold November night, but this place was lovely and warm with real fires burning. Good menu selection with choices ranging from sea bass and salmon, to kebabs, steaks and Greek classics such as stifado and moussaka. The gluten free options were also amazing, much wider than than listed on the menu - so be sure to ask (they could adapt virtually all dishes except stifado and moussaka) I had chicken and pork kebab. Great portion size, tender meat, with lovely home made chips. Other two in our party had the sea bass that was equally amazing. Topped off with a gluten free sticky toffee pudding and custard - that I could not resist. The owner / Chef, Sid, came round the restaurant towards the end of evening to chat to customers and check all was Ok with meal. Fantastic touch. Lovely setup, great food, amazing service from Sid and ALL his team. We will be back

Nice place but food not up to scratch..we ordered the chicken and pork kebabs ...served nearly cold with cheap frozen chips ...I asked for some tomato sauce .. it was cheap sachet. Menu was very limited. Very disappointed. We live in the village as well.

We booked two rooms for two nights, for the chance to stay in a unique setting during our recent visit to York. Not many people can say they booked rooms called The Flying Scotsman and The Orient Express and had the full experience of the old carriages that were once belonging to these Trains. We all settled on a shared Meze for the meal on the first night and were not disappointed, followed by a selection of Greek desserts and chased down by Ouzo from the Owner/Chef. Retiring to the comfort of the log fire, the bar surroundings created a wonderful ending to a great night. The second night, our business completed, we returned to try different choices in the restaurant. We were not disappointed here either, the food was of a high standard, delicious and well presented. Train buffs will enjoy the surroundings, with a chance for the children to wave and picture the passing trains, even get the 'toot' when they are seen. Foodies will find it difficult not to pay a second visit or even a third. We are glad that we do not live close, as this could become a place that we would find difficult to stay away from. Would I recommend the 'Sidings' to friends, only if they invited me to go along with them. We all look forward to our return visit, to stay, eat or both, the next time we are ever in the area.

Definitely one for rail enthusiasts. Right at the side of the East Coast main line, trains passing ever few minutes. The rail carriages are very atmospheric and the dining car is lovely. The food is very very nice and well priced. The owner is very friendly as are all the staff. Thanks for a great stay.

Unfortunately we were very disappointed with our stay in room 7. The photographs on the website of this room are not a true representation of the room and therefore misleading. The bed is completely different and there was no chair. Our main concern was the fact that the room smelt very musty and the bed linen and towels felt damp. We guess this was due to lack of insulation, no heating and the humidity. There was quite a large amount of dust on top of the headboard, a large cobweb from the bottom of the TV running to the side of the wardrobe as well as a used t-shirt left in the top of the wardrobe. (This had been mentioned in Lesley's review dated 10th September!) We definitely felt the room needed some TLC. On the plus side the shower was good. We were greeted with a warm welcome and the cooked breakfast was great. We did pass our comments onto the management. Date of stay: September 2023

I recently visited with friends for a surprise birthday stay over. We had a lovely time. The evening meal was lovely and the service was fantastic. Really made us feel special. We stayed in 4 of the rooms. All were lovely apart from mine. Don't get me wrong it was lovely but it did smell and I realised that this was due to the carpet being wet. This was a birthday surprise from my wife. I later learned three emails with a special request went unanswered. The evening meal was decent enough, but the small portion size of the fish I ordered did not reflect the price. Breakfast was an interesting experience. Wonderful food in a great location Unfortunately we were a party of 5 and couldn't sit in a carriage. But the open plan dining area was just as good. I recommend the following starters Bread basket with butter Feta parcels with a light salad. They are wonderful. The pate is also lovely The mains I recommend are The lamb stew as the lamb is so soft and the gravy is delightful . The feta burger is gorgeous . A thick burger with crumbly feta on top. The sea bass is an option if you have had a heavy starter. It's the lighter option but throughly gorgeous. As I said wonderful place to dine.

I had such an amazing stay at the Sidings hotel and the food was just as good to accompany it! So much fun to stay in the train carriages and didn't hear the trains at night at all (despite being in the closest carriage to the tracks). Want to come back to celebrate one of their greek nights! We stopped in the Silver Jubilee Pulman. Does not profess to be 5star but the 4 poster bed was nice. The shower was adequate and it probably gets cold off season. But as experience goes the wife and I loved it. We were aware of overnight trains if awake,but never woken up by them. The carriage Resteraunt meal was top class as was the service. I haven't stayed here since 2000, when I was 14/15, however I recently visited to eat and was impressed by the price/quality ratio. Large portions of kebab and salad for just £15 at what is essentially an independent country pub. Trains hammer by every few minutes in both directions literally ten paces away. Will revisit soon. I absolutely love this place. As a rail enthusiast it ticks ever box and more. However there’s a lot to appeal to everyone. The Greek style lunch we had was poli kala. Very authentic, hot and tasty and well presented. The host was fabulous. A really interesting guy who spent time with us chatting about everything. He was happy to show us the railway carriage accommodation and as a result we will book to stay here. The railway memorabilia is superb. The view of the tracks is first class. I could write a book about how great this place is

Just used the restaurant on a Thursday lunchtime with the family. Lovely food. Great seeing the trains come past. Kids loved it. Absolutely fantastic food. The atmosphere and service couldn’t have been better. The Hotel consists of a main building and 5 railway carriages which function as bedrooms. We only went for lunch so can't comment on the rooms. It is a beautiful setting however with ample parking. Stayed one night in The Silver Jubilee bedroom as a birthday surprise for partner. Very comfortable 4 poster bed at far end of carriage. Super meal that night and lovely breakfast next morning in the dining carriage overlooking the East Coast mainline railway. Overall a superb location with friendly staff, highly recommended.
