The Shoregate in Fife

My partner and I had a three course meal mid October 2024. Food was excellent, great drinks menu selection and very attentive staff. Highly recommend l. Great pub in the back to.

Four of us turned up with a dog and no booking. We were welcomed and accommodated in the bar area. The food was amazing quality and cooked to perfection. The staff were friendly and helpful. It was a brilliant experience and we're very happy to return .

OMG!! We popped in for a quick lunch while visiting Crail only to discover a hidden gem of a restaurant. The food was 5 star and the service was excellent. If you are in the area plan to stop by and enjoy an amazing meal. Highly recommend!

A very pleasant place with a great atmosphere. The menu was quite expensive, however we decided to have a drink instead, so can’t comment on the quality. The bar was lovely, and staff were very friendly and helpful, even providing us with some very tasty snacks! Overall, very good and professional place.

This is an outstanding restaurant in terms of food and service.

We visited for lunch and ordering from the small plates menu with two sides. Our food was delicious, with generous side portions. The atmosphere was great, very comfortable place to dine. Spotless and nicely decorated too. We’ll definitely return.

Very friendly staff well presented food and very welcoming to our dog Only big disappointment was the ‘all gender’ toilets Walked into the one with a urinal by mistake which could be easily fixed by calling it what it is Mens/Gents toilet. I don’t wish to use a toilet that has the seat up or urine splashes on the floor!

Excellent cuisine, quality food

OMG brilliant Spring pea soup& pancetta then Smoky bacon etc etc sandwich. Best ever U'n coming back to Crail. Young waitresses so pleasant. Great!

Another lovely meal here. Shame I wasn't able to book a room for an overnight stay. Other places just don't compare.

Lovely, welcoming staff and really nicely furnished bar/ restaurant. Dog friendly in the bar, where they also serve food. Five stars for the delicious food and real Scottish ale. We had beautiful cod fishcakes and trout.

We had a delicious meal at The Shoregate. The interior of the place is stunning, the staff were incredibly welcoming and friendly and the food was first class! Would 10/10 recommend

Lovely small hotel, good service, stylish surroundings.

My wife booked the Shoregate for my birthday and we stayed in the top floor suite for 1 night. This was not our first visit as we'd been the year before stopping in for a pint and some nibbles. My wife obviously kept it in her back pocket to surprise me this year when the rooms finally opened. There's a few important things to note about the Shoregate they are as follows: The Davids The managers are David and David. Fortunately they are distinguishable in that one is the dark haired creator of "The Holy and the Passionate"/ The other charming and affable chap with light hair and a New Zealand twang is who I will be referring for the rest of the review. Arrival We arrived early and entered the bar where we were greeted by David (NZ twang). He was charming affable and let us know the room was ready early so he could take us up straight away if we liked. Retrospectively I now realise he was proud to be taking us up the room. As well he should have been. The suite is immaculate. All coppers, blue and streamlined class. The room There are little hidden treasures everywhere. Two bottles of Darnley's gin and two of perfectly paired tonic from Kingsbarns distillery up the road. A filled bucket of ice. Fridge with chilled milk and bottles of mineral water. All complimentary. Two perfect hazelnut and choicolate macrons on a serving dish that houses two pieces of homemade Scottish table. This is just what greets you. The furniture is all big, comfortable, stylish Scottish shore side pieces in keeping with the locale. The bed is enormous and the mattress firm but exceptionally comfortable for it. All that I was missing all night was my faithful hound who was kennelled... Dog friendly He needn't have been! There were dogs in and out of the bar all afternoon. All perfectly well behaved and obviously owned by locals who have made the Shoregate their local. The bar A variety of lovingly collated local beer, spirits and softs. Sadly the UK doesn't really have the climate for wine or I'm sure they'd feature too. But the Sicilian red we had with dinner was perfectly paired with the main meal. There is something for everyone and there were bottles of very aged rum and malt whiskey that would appeal to anyone that the incredible list of cocktails didn't. The most popular one is The Holy and the Passionate for good reason. Personally I loved the Basil Gimlet and The First Word. The food We shared all the appetisers that could be offered at the bar. The vegetable crisps and sourdough bread was our highlight but there really are no wrong answers in this place - my firmly held belief. Dinner started with the beetroot and crowdie. The meatlovers among us will be drawn by the hamhock croquette that my wife had. But believe me neither is to be missed. We split the chateaubriand (2 person min) and were happily tucking into a generous serving of perfectly cooked beef with seasonal veg for what I wish had gone on forever. In the morning my wife had eggs benny and I had beautiful duck meat with eggs and sourdough soldiers. They were both out of this world. David and his team David (NZ) and his team were incredibly attentive and kind. It's obvious he's proud of the service they deliver. If a Swiss watch could offer comfort and charm to a couple on a romantic weekend break then I'd say the place runs like a Swiss watch. But the fact is a Swiss watch would compare itself to how well the Shoregate is running.

3 of us ate there this afternoon. Service excellent and the food was really lovely. Well presented and great quality. Would definitely recommend.

Fantastic food, great ale recommendations and absolutely perfect service from David. Can't fault the place. The sourdough bread was fresh and exquisite.

We thoroughly enjoyed our evening at The Shoregate. The food was creatively put together with punchy flavours. The atmosphere in the restaurant was great and the service was 1st class. We will definitely return when we next visit the St Andrews area.

Had the best time yesterday. Met 2 of my friends for food & fun. The Salmon with dill vingarette was delicious. The shared chips was so yummy. David was great with the service. We couldn't have asked for anything more.

Visited The Shoregate for lunch after reading a review in The Scotsman. Wasn’t disappointed. Dined in the bar as had our dog with us. Friendly welcome, enjoyable food, great decor and a brilliant 80’s background playlist. Happy to recommend.

Delicious food, excellent staff & a welcoming ambience in the restaurant & bar! Don’t miss their traditional music sessions which are fortnightly on Wednesdays & did I mention the cocktails??….. Dave the mixologist/ bartender creates ‘THE’ most impressive contemporary & classic cocktails in the East Neuk ! Highly recommended!!

Ahhh! Mmm The Best Lunch I have had all year in 4 countries. Love this gem over CRAIL Harbour. Every dish perfect, a Leek & tattie soup, chive, sapphire olive oil, and crème fraiche that I have been searching for … for years. Nothing in France came close to this divine creation. Then add some little Parsnip crisps in a roast garlic emulsion… I’m elevated with a light glass Chardonnay from France and then grounded with a deeply satisfying ‘Bookmaker”Charcoal roast sirloin, caramelized shallot, popped up by pickled shimeji white mushrooms. Psychedelic Dining!! Thanks to Alex for making sure we had all we needed and informing of us the delightful modern warm update on the interior is recent so the shots you see online will soon be updated to show what I have added. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Nice place but thought the choices on the menu were limited, two of the mains were lamb. Starters and sweets were good but mains left us unimpressed. Better knifes to cut the meat would have helped too.

Fantastic service! I asked if they had anything vegan on the menu which the waiter told me they have just vegetarian but may be able to make vegan. Delighted to find out they could and the food was delicious, everyone was attentive and welcoming.

I was looking forward to a pleasant winter afternoon drink in the Shoregate. Instead we got overpriced indifferent wine. It was more expensive than in a Michelin 1star restaurant in Gotenburg. We won’t be going again.

We were a party of 4 dining on a quiet Sunday evening and because of it it lacked atmosphere. Nonetheless we enjoyed our food and the staff were delightful.

Enjoyed a fantastic lunch at the Shoregate this afternoon. Sat outside in glorious sunshine and will certainly return next time we visit Crail! We chose the whole roasted plaice, accompanied by a great New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. For dessert we had the Bergamot tart and warm marmalade pudding. The meal was superb, delivered by super friendly staff. Service times were perfect and the price very reasonable. An added bonus (for us) was that this restaurant was dog friendly! A little gem in East Neuk! We WILL be back!

Fine dining indeed. We are delighted to have found Shoregate during our short stay in lovely Crail. Quietly professional staff, lead by totally switched on Kiwi manager, David, made for a memorable evening. The chef produced a creative and delicious menu: interesting, balanced and accomplished. Well done, and thanks to all of you. We are already planning a return trip from Inverness!!!

Amazing find in a small town. 1st class all the way. If you're in the area don't miss the opportunity. You could easily find this restaurant in London or Paris and find it to be the top of your trip. But to find it in Crail is special.

A joy. Delicious food and simply brilliant service. A must visit if you are in the East Neuk, and if you are further afield and happy to make the journey you won’t be disappointed - it’s just great.

Fine dining style modern Scottish with no surprises, just very, very well done. Lovely atmosphere and service. A great addition to the East Neuk. On the pricey side but worth it.

Managed to secure a booking at the Shoregate during a short visit to Crail, I'm SO glad that we did! The meal was delicious and the service was attentive, friendly and genuine (without at all being over bearing!). The food was delicious and the presentation was beautiful. It's a shame we don't live closer or we'd be back in a heartbeat!! Will certainly be recommending to friends and family! My only suggestion would be to slightly dim the lights down in the evening - but other than that, absolute perfection!! Thank you for such a lovely evening!
