My favourite restaurant in the world! I came here twice two years ago and think about it all the time. Can’t wait for the next visit. Bruce only uses the absolute freshest ingredients and it shows - the taste of dishes here is so tender on the tastebuds and exploding with umami you want to pinch yourself to see if it’s real. Posting below a review I wrote in August 2022 after my first visit: ‘One of the absolute highlights of our Cornwall trip was a beautiful little gem of a restaurant in Penzance called the Shore. The chef, Bruce, greets you enthusiastically, barefoot, at the door, introduces every course to the 12 guests in the space, and does everything from nabbing the freshest fish from local fishmongers before they even go to the public to washing the dishes to renovating the space. Bruce is adamant on freshness and bringing out the fullness of the flavour in everything - sea and garden ingredients served with a Japanese-inspired twist. I think a good indication of his sophisticated and delicate but unpretentious style of cooking is how he intentionally never uses an ingredient that's only pretty as garnish but can't be eaten. His food is truly food as art, and in a way it reminded me of really good therapy in the sense that you can taste within each slice and sliver of food the kind of immense skill, rich trove of knowledge, and keen insight that take decades to build. It reminded me of the intimacy of certain works of immersive theatre which offers an intimate experience in a space tailored to the production for the audience, but I have to say, seeing shows are much more tiring because you have to concentrate the entire time, without getting divine food! (Another way in which the night reminded me of theatre is how you can never get the same experience again, and how the realisation makes you savour the preciousness of every moment.) Bruce’s blend of down-to-earthness and high level of skill, craft, and understanding is such a marvel to me. It's easy for mastery in cooking to be touted at high prices, dressed up in fluff and frills, or for it to be surrounded by an air of exclusivity and elitism, but here the intimacy of the setting is because of practicality (one person can only cook for so many!) and also because of a real emotional attentiveness. In a world where "intimacy" or "homey vibes" can be sold as commodities, it was refreshing to just return to the basics and be in a situation where intimacy is the natural result of the setting and the person's philosophy. It also reminds me of the Japanese concept of shokunin, referring to artisans, craftspeople, et al who are singularly devoted to their craft over long periods of time (as long as a lifetime or beyond) and with a deep sense of humility. The grilled bass was absorbently juicy, and having pickles before hake and mussels is a genius stroke because the sourness of the former fully brought out the sweetness of the latter. The memory of the courgette, tomato, and squid soup still makes my mouth tingle with umami. The skinned tomatoes were tender, the diced courgette as freshly flavoured as green mangos, the squid impeccable, served with a side of chilled broth which you can feed into the bowl on your own. What I also appreciated about Bruce's food was how attuned he was to the outside world and how his guests were feeling - he served a chill soup because of the hot weather, which shows a connectedness with one's surroundings, the antithesis of the hubristic belief that you can get anything by air freight as long as you're willing to pay more. I have to say: Bruce makes me understand why things get put on the Michelin Guide, and I want to give him all the recs in the world!’

My wife and I were celebrating our 29th wedding anniversary and after reading the fantastic reviews decided to try this place out. We where greeted by the lovely Vikki and seated at our table, then Bruce (the owner/chief) comes out and explains the first course / wine and continues to do this till the 6 courses are complete. The atmosphere is intimate, vibrant and funny as Bruce is an excellent host and you can tell he’s passionate about his food he just loves to cook and that reflects in his cooking. My wife and I are both foodies from London (working class) and we try to experience as many different restaurants as possible and we both agree, IF YOU LOVE GREAT FOOD, WINE SERVICE ALL SERVED UP IN A BEAUTIFUL RESTAURANT WITHOUT ALL THE LONDON CRAP AND HIGH PRICES THIS IS THE PLACE FOR YOU. We loved our dinner at Shore last weekend and would definitely recommend it. The food was so so good and having Bruce come out and explain each dish, where he got the ingredients and why he chose to prepare it as he did is really interesting and adds to the experience. Service was impeccable. Anything we asked for seemed to appear about a minute later. Given the experience, food quality, and small room, £90 each feels incredibly reasonable. I’m so glad we came here on our trip and we’ll definitely be recommending it to everyone going to the area. Thanks from Ramsgate, Bruce!

I must say that Chef Bruce is truly skilled at preparing fish dishes. I cannot give him enough compliments for consistently bringing out the flavors of the fish. Fish can be tricky to cook and sometimes tend to be overcooked, but that is not the case here. My favorite dish is the fish custard with roe and crab. You have to try it to know how delicious it is. I hope this restaurant will get a Michelin 1-star rating.

Read a review in an international travel magazine- made reservations a few months in advance. We’re told not to be late as the meal starts promptly at 7pm. a very special meal. my partner took me out for a birthday and anniversary meal, and I got to choose the resterant and chose shore - for my love of japanease dining and intimate resteraunts. it lived up to all expectations, each course was immaculate in its own way - the layering of flavour working in unison. The wine pairing were probably my favourite part of the meal - not just focusing on wines - but getting a incredible variations of drinks that were the perfect sips with each bite. I think my partner fell in love with Bruce and his explination of each dish. He has been fangirling over his knowlege of food ever since. we left giddy and excited to come back in a different season.

Bruce is exceptional! I took my partner here for her birthday, splashing out on a bit more than I'd usually spend. Every penny was absolutley well spent. I had chosen Shore because of reviews stating it's just Bruce cooking and serving and I wanted a personal experience, that is exactly what we got. We chose to include the additional drinks pairing which I would 100% recomend for the full experience. Before each course Bruce talked us through what he was serving, where it was sourced (down to the name of the boat the fish was caught on). His knowledge of flavour and food theory was mind blowing and was represented by dishes that appeared simple if not for the number of steps Bruce had taken to get the ingredients to your plate. From 3 year homemade Miso to smoked fish custards and lacto-fermented vegtables. I will be reccomending The Shore to everyone I know as it has been the single best cullinary experience I have ever had and I look forward to the day I can afford to return. Thank you Bruce!

This is the 3rd or 4th time we have visited The Shore and every time it has been a fabulous culinary experience. Tuesday’s visit was no exception, a truly delicious menu prepared with precision, attention to detail and love by Bruce, ably assisted by his friendly and welcoming front of house manager. It was great the learn the provenance of each of the 6 dishes served from the chef himself. An intimate experience for people who enjoy trying unusual pairings and love the freshest ingredients from the local area. Well done Bruce, you do a fabulous job and we hope to be back next year!

The chef will have a brief introduction on his cooking philosophy at the start and then would briefly describe each dish before serving. It was an excellent experience! It was amazing food theatre, from two different but equally passionate food professionals. The decor and story behind the carefully selected menu will thrill and excite anyone passionate about sustainability, supporting local British agriculture and fishing. I still cannot believe our host sources, preps, cooks and plates these dishes on their own. It's a massive show of art and skill that what is delivered from the door to plate is done with such character, finesse, and heart! They manage to produce what normally needs a team of people. But it's stripped back, family style dining is so refreshing and a joy to experience! It's a MUST for any true foodie

Bruce’s tasting menu was the highlight of our 10 day gastronomic tour of Devon and Cornwall. For someone who claims never to have visited Japan, his kaiseki menu would do even Endo proud. His interpretation of chawanmushi was sublime with a fresh and crunchy shitake and caviar. Superb fish fresh from the quay and the locally grown vegetables were delicious. Even the shiso tasted like shiso tastes in Japan, a remarkable achievement given that shiso in UK is generally bland and disappointing. Three things to bear in mind: 1) try to show up at 6.45pm to get the best tables. Dinner starts promptly at 7pm. 2) don’t expect any meat. 3) Bruce leaves the kitchen between every other course to describe the following two courses. His account of where he sourced the ingredients and how he prepared them is truly fascinating. - Finally, a meal at the Shore is not only a true feast for all your senses but also incredibly good value.

An absolute must if you're in the area (or not! ) love seafood, east asian food and a truly passionate chef. Unlike anywhere we've eaten before, and all the better for it. Fabulous food and the host, Bruce is lovely - passionate about cooking and local produce. Marvellous tasting menu - particular highlights were the bass with cucumber and an elderflower oil, totally delicious and totally different, not a common combination. Also the John Dory and the amazing dessert with a divine basil sorbet.

One of the best meals we’ve ever had. A set menu of five fish dishes plus dessert prepared with passion and presented with self-deprecating enthusiasm by chef-owner Bruce Rennie, using Japanese techniques to bring out the best in his local produce. Every mouthful was delicious with each course complementing the one before and the one after. All the diners had to arrive at the same time, giving the evening the atmosphere of a supper club. The wine pairings are optional, but worth it because they are very carefully chosen. One course on the night we ate at The Shore was accompanied by sake, served at room temperature and perfectly smooth. The whole experience was delightful and one we will remember for a long time.

We've been eating here pretty much since it opened and The Shore just gets better and better. The food is superb and the fixed menu format takes the stress out of choosing! The matched wines were excellent (book a taxi!) and Bruce's explanations between each course added to the experience. Bruce is an inventive and passionate chef and advocate for all things local, no detail is overlooked. They understandably can't take walk-ins so make sure you book.

Good heavens. It's hard to find the appropriate superlatives to describe this experience. There are no choices - that in itself is rather wonderful. It is a lot of money, but you soon realise that it is not expensive. This is eating at the hand of a chef who's at the top of his game, creating the very best combinations of the very best foods available, and everything is very local. Choose a fabulous bottle of wine. Eat slowly. Savour every mouthful. Then start saving for your next visit. Thank you to the enthusiastic chef Bruce and his excellent assistant. We thoroughly enjoyed the evening and we will be back.

Some of the taster menu was amazing. The presentation excellent. The staff superb. The toilets immaculate. The value for money second to none. And for all those reasons you should go. But I am picky. Some was so so. The filo pastry with goats cheese and beetroot should be lush with flavour but ended up tasting of salt and was bland. Others just were, well, nice. The decor is 90s tired. Which is fine but for a taster experience, food, lighting, atmosphere, smells all contribute to that. It's just not quite there. Almost but not quite. The dead dried flowers should be binned as it's not in keeping with a classy place but more an 80s feel. For the covers they are probably one staff member short. So that napkins can be folded when a customer goes for a wee, and water topped up. Instead two great staff are stretched. The place deserves success. The staff are doing a great job and the chef is doing wonderful things with duck and blackberries. And the custard desert. Wow. Just wow. It just needs a smidge more consistency, a spruce of the decor, an extra staff member and a tweak to some of the courses to go from good to excellent.

We visited on Monday 12th August. Before setting out I checked their website which said opens at 11.30. We arrived 12.15 only to find it was all shut up. We weren't the only ones to arrive and be disappointed. Not a good way to run a business.
