This hotel and restaurant is situated on the same coast as the Nare. It therefore shares the same "subtropical" climate. The gardens reflect this and the hotel is on a gentle cliff with access to the sea and small beach with no signs of civilisation around. It is certainly a beautiful and unique area. Parking is easy and first impressions of the hotel entrance suggest a 1960's house that has been extended on multiple occasions. The staff vary from being pleasant, attentive and slightly nervous to extremely chatty and friendly. The dining room has 2 sections and I felt the area near the entrance had the best ambiance. The views towards the sea are amazing but remember that if you sit on a table next to the vista windows early in the evening by the time it gets dark you will be looking at a vast black area of glass which is unpleasant due to complete absence of outside light. Maybe best to take a table next to the inside wall. There is a fixed price dinner for £70 and this includes warm home made rolls and excellent canapés. The duck parfait was enjoyable and the preserved bream unusual. The main courses were very fish orientated with a non-fish choice of only 1 out of 4 meat eaters may have some difficulty. Monkfish was perfect and the Soufflé memorable. With service, tax and 2 glasses of wine the dinner for 2 came to almost £190 - perhaps a little more than expected but an enjoyable evening.

We had been looking forward to this for some time and they delivered. Quiet Monday night meant that the six of us felt like we were having private dining. From the warm welcome and drink in the lounge to the excellent understated service in the restaurant, we loved it. Great ambience and lovely food made our night special. Different starters across the six of us and feedback was good for all but the crab tart was a real winner. Main course feedback was likewise, particularly the beef and the guinea fowl. Desserts excellently created. Thanks for a great evening.

The location and setting of the restaurant is beautiful and the food we ate was excellent, but our overall dining experience was somewhat letdown by a very limited menu - my wife struggled to find something she really wanted as a main course and for a restaurant with such a great reputation, this was a little disappointing. The service was very good with the staff friendly and attentive. It was also very expensive which made the evening a slightly underwhelming experience.

This was our first visit to Cornwall. We came to celebrate my son’s birthday. We’re from NYC but staying in Cardiff for the summer. The hotel exceeded our expectations. The grounds, our room and the view were absolutely lovely. We didn’t have a car so that was difficult. But other than taking a taxi to The Eden Project we spent our four days, three nights at the hotel and we were happy to do so. The little hike back and forth to the private beach is charming. The little lookouts on the property are so serene. The afternoon tea perfect and special. The staff is incredibly accommodating. Leah at the front desk is very sweet and the owner Fiona genuinely kind and helpful in planning your day. Two standouts in the restaurant were Camilla and Dan. All the staff in the restaurant was on point, if a little reserved and cool. But Camilla and Dan were so effortlessly warm to my son and I—especially as it was his birthday. I really appreciated the kindness. We’ll have memories from this place for years to come. We hope to come back.

We had an enchanting and exclusive dinner in one of the most beautiful places in Cornwall. There was Cornwell bread with blossom butter as a stater. Also filled croquettes with tender fillet. as well as asparagus variations for starters and as a main course for vegans a crispy cauliflower breast with asparagus and delicious new potatoes. In addition, tender chicken fillet in different versions with delicious sauce. The staff was great and friendly and we had a quiet evening. Thank you very much for the lovely evening 🌈

We have always come to the Driftwood for special occasions. Although the decor is the same, the chefs have changed as has the menu. Happily for the better. Our asparagus starter was great, and the badger faced lamb (does it really look like that?) was outstanding.

We had lunch here with friends to celebrate my 75th birthday. What a find. I think it deserves a Michelin star, or bib at the very least. Every course was superb, well explained and presented. The secluded location and 180 degree coastal views are breathtakingly beautiful, and the restaurant itself was lovely especially our window table. Hugely enjoyable.

We expected the traditional seaside/country hotel feel - white table cloths, quiet and clean, polite staff etc - but what was a surprise was the great food! A trio of different ingredients for each guest - pumpkin soup, cheese in breadcrumbs and trout - for starters. Venison and halibut for mains cooked perfectly both with tasty sauces. Cheese selection and delicious millefleurs with a twist for dessert. A Sunday lunch with a difference - very impressed!

We stayed here for a week and so were able to go through the short menu. The food was excellent. The duck and the cod in two of the mains were cooked perfectly. A lobster starter was delicious and a sachertorte dessert was pure genius – perfect balance of flavours. A crab dish could have had more flavour, but that’s being picky. The main problem was that the menu didn’t change all week, so with only 4 mains, it was disappointing. We were invited to ask the chef for alternatives, but had to book an appointment to see him (11 am) and then decide what we would like to eat later and tomorrow. For that reason, would not return unless either longer menu or changing one.

We arrived early and sat in the bar area, where we found the seats quite narrow and uncomfortable. After about 10 mins our drinks order was taken by very pleasant staff. They no longer do the tasting menu, instead they charge a flat £75 for 3 courses. We were given the menu to look at and were surprised to see it was different from the one shown at the entrance to the hotel/restaurant. After about 45 mins, we were taken to our table and served our first course, both of which was very small and disappointing. My mushroom mousse, was lukewarm with a cold creme fraiche on the top. Not sure whether the mousse should have been served hot (my preference) or cold! For the mains, my husband had a small piece of lamb, which was served without any accompaniments. I had duck which came with a teaspoon of lentils. Both meats tasted lovely but were a bit dull without any vegetables or sides. We decline the dessert. We had a bottle of wine with our meal and our bill came to £192. When we got home my husband had a sandwich as he was still hungry. I felt quite uncomfortable there, but I can't expIain why. I think we were the only people in the hotel restaurant who were not residents.

Pleasant view and lovely hotel from what I could see however the food was at best average, and most definitely overpriced. I’m not entirely sure how there are so many excellent reviews here, I went back to check today and realised they were from last year. Food combinations were odd and there were key ingredients (stated on the menu) missing from some dishes. Thought it important to share this review. Hopefully it was just a not so great day in the kitchen… that said even if it was not sure the price justifies the menu. Appreciate it would have been better to say something when we were there, but was way too tired. (and slightly bewildered) on the day.

What a find ! Tucked out the way from the usual crowded places , here you have peace and relaxation without any hassle . Just book in and let the price and tranquility of the area wash over you , No other houses near you , your own deserted beach , lovely coastal walks and their own wonderful gardens to sit in and watch the sea . As for the food , it can only be described as boarding on Michelin starred ! that good ! All the staff were very helpful and friendly, could not do enough for you , I think I'm right in saying it's only 15 rooms and a wonderful little 2 bed cottage that's tucked in half way down the cliff path , so book early if you want a relaxing get away !

We had a pleasant stay at Driftwood. He rooms were lovely with outdoor seating area. Plenty of outdoor areas with seating with chairs that is very peaceful overlooking the ocean. There is an amazing private beach that is a must visit! Staff are very nice and friendly. The only reason for 1 star less is the food and price of it. 65 pounds for a two course. And very very very limited options. The quantity is also less for what you pay. I just felt it was not worth eating in here. Breakfast is complementary and was nice and decent selection.

MORE AT Google

We went end of July for lunch with my wife and our two teenage boys to celebrate our first family holiday in a long while. Our preference would have been dinner, but the place was fully booked for the whole week, so we opted for lunch instead. The reservation agent over the phone told us that a small a la carte was available in addition to the lunch set menu which was not the case. The setting was beautiful, we had a lovely table facing the bay and with only three tables in the whole restaurant during service, we almost had the restaurant to ourselves. The food is excellent, starting with fresh, local ingredients that are beautifully presented and put together in a harmonious, yet innovative manner. A true representation of what is best in the area when it comes to quality produce. Probably the best culinary experience in Cornwall we have had during our summer break. But overall, without being offensive, we were somehow disappointed. Let me explain. Today, a premium restaurant meal is being rated on the overall experience, not just on the food and the view, and at the end of the day it simply comes to value for money. We spent £70 a head for a three-course lunch without coffee and service (including a £66 bottle of Champagne). That is not cheap and for that kind of money, you have high expectations hence why only the three stars (but I think it can easily reach 5). The manager could have helped a bit more the only waitress who was trying hard during a non-busy lunch service. Service and atmosphere should be all about the staff displaying a knowledgeable, friendly attitude, it is about offering great local hospitality and making guests feel at ease. We did not get that. It was clumsy, inconsistent, unapologetic and above all with a slight air of self-importance that you get in those well-established, successful places. Perhaps it was an off day, you are full every day for dinner so my comments may not be of any help for improvement, but I believe that the whole experience could easily be brought to the same standards as the new Head Chef’s excellent food. Wishing the team, the very best. Great bits The quality and innovation of local food is the main focus here (and lovely plate ware) Scenic sea views Cosy, pleasant looking dining room with some quirky design coastal notes all over To improve Portions were on the small side Only choice of two courses for starter/main/dessert (and we were misinformed about a la carte) 3 course Lunch set menu at £50 could be reduced a bit Charged £3 for extra bread but was not warned Service lacks attentiveness and remains inconsistent. We had to get up and poor Champagne ourselves several times. Some other small notes such as my wife not always served first, no salt/pepper offered… Had to pay bill a reception desk and agent was quite blunt, a simple “how was meal today?” would have sufficed Atmosphere was on the formal side

Their garden, views and whole surrounding coastal area of Portscatho is the only thing really that makes this hotel great! But in summer, beautiful sunsets take place on the other side of the coast, so we seen none here, except for light pink hues in the sky. The hotel itself is dated and in need of renovation. The most annoying thing for me about the rooms we had (we stayed in two different rooms) - distorted bigger mirrors, greasy/dirty from time patches on the bed frame where you are supposed to lean with your white pillows, no lights around bathroom sink mirror and just the state of bathroom mirrors in general - they need to be thrown out!, incredibly old ugly tv in the room (i mean, just get rid of it, seriously!). Even with a slight revamp rooms can be better. I imagine 20 years ago this place would have looked really pleasant and lovely but it has expired its looks and freshness some years ago. The staff is nice people and generally want to be helpful but but they tend to get busy/stretched in evening and in general (they tend to do everything very quickly, like they are always rushing), so if you have some general requests during your stay they are mostly forgotten about. We kept asking to move times of our morning coffee service and it was just never done - such a simple quick thing, does it even require much effort to do? …it gets annoying after two days. The biggest downside for me - lack of outside seating areas for couples in the breakfast. Weirdly, most tables are set up for large groups, you are not allowed to sit on them if not in a group and some just stay empty. You have to make a faff (and even after all the faff it’s just not the right set up) to sit outside if you are a couple or come out before everyone to take the ONLY ONE couple table… really annoying! …small details … but they make up your stay. Unfortunately they just don’t understand how to set up their outside breakfast area as it ultimately sells the stay here along with the view. It’s a 3 star hotel for a reason. I understand it’s summer, prime time, prime Cornwall, but price wise £300 per night they can do way better. I can imagine that all their focus and efforts are perhaps concentrated around their award-winning restaurant, but I wasn’t really lured to try it. I just feel the fine dining experience and a mega dated hotel stay experience don’t go along together. But their breakfasts tasted really lovely. There is also a lot of trendy, easy-going and atmospheric little food places in town as well as wonderful Hidden Hut on the way (only a 20 min walk) which we loved going to and checking everything out. I loved the vibe of Portscatho - such a relaxed, cute little town with a beautiful and effortless summer vibe. By the way, the wild flower meadow at the back of the hotel with two chairs placed in the middle was one of my loved bits of their garden.

Started with Partridge followed by Venison and ended with the Quince and Bergamot soufflé, with Earl Grey ice cream. I cannot tell you how much I loved this dessert. The delight of the cheese board ( I shared my husbands) apart for the cheese of course, was the lightest home made cheese biscuits and Malt Loaf with Apple Chutney. We came here as our first meal as husband an wife on our honeymoon. We eat at around 4 michelin restaurants a year and have been working in fine dining for 15 years..... and we absolutely loved this place. The staff are exceptional, friendly and pay attention to detail. It's nice to actually have some personalities come through in fine dining service. The atmosphere was a little quiet for us, however as soon as the restaurant was full it began to feel warm and we felt like we could conversate a bit better. Decor is light, slightly quirky and interesting. We loved the music, jazz takes on lassie songs. The wine list isnt extensive, but the wines on the list are tasteful and carefully chosen. With something for everyone within reason. Our food was beyond excellent. Everything from our canapés to our desserts were extremely well balanced, flavourful and brilliantly executed. The star dish for me was the sweetbread starter. I love sweetbreads, and this rivals the best sweetbread dish I've had at The Man Behind The Curtain. Seriously good. We loved it so much here, we are back for afternoon tea tomorrow! I will say that our experience matched that of many 1 and 2 star michelin restaurants, and I strongly believe the team will achieve a star very soon! Many thanks for looking after us! K&M

This is certainly not one of the faceless chain hotel dining experiences, this is a much more individual places where someone has clearly paid much attention to detail in order to provide something which treads the fine line between being top notch but not stuffy and certainly not pretentious. We felt welcomed as soon as we arrived and would consider a stay in the future, such was our enjoyment of this special place, perched above the sea. We had lunch for my husband’s birthday and it really was one of the most delicious and memorable meals we have ever had. Initially, we thought we might only have a main and a pudding but the three delightful little starters which came out were absolutely top notch, both in terms of presentation and taste. The interesting part was that Deer Tartare with beetroot tartlet is not something I would ever have chosen due to not particularly liking venison but, my goodness, it was sublime. From the short pastry to the flavours within, it was just perfect, as were the other two offerings. Such a nice idea to have a selection as a sharing experience. Main was lamb which was so tender and tasty I think I will be remembering that meal for quite some time to come - I don’t usually order meat when eating out. Pudding (we just had to!) was equally well executed in looks and flavour…. To produce such stunning food takes much skill. After lunch, we asked if we could leave our car and walk down to the beach and what a good way to wear off our fantastic meal. All I can say is, this place is special and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Go with an open mind and just enjoy it all! Highlight of our holiday and a great way to mark a birthday!

Came here for lunch on a beautiful sunny day and we were able to sit outside which has fantastic views out to sea. Its a really lovely place to come and spend an afternoon and you can access the beach directly (albeit down steep steps which may not be suitable for elderly people or those with physical requirements). Staff are super friendly and helpful. Our only disappointment was that the lunch menu dishes were small portions. We were reassured by our waitress that the courgette salad was enough for a main meal alone, I don't know anyone who would agree with that. I would suggest if coming here for lunch that you order a few dishes between two 'tapas style' if you want to come away not hungry. Delicious food nonetheless.

Stunning location and a stunning meal ! We had not been to the Driftwood for a few years, the food was even better than previous visits. The presentation and quality is right up there with the best London restaurants and set in the beautiful cliff...

Yet again, another lovely stay at Driftwood. This time we went for the Sunday lunch package, I sadly had too much to eat for lunch and had to miss out on the lovely evening food. Great food, exemplary service, always a pleasure to visit.

Excellent meal. New chef really finding his feet and delivering food packed with great flavours. I was a big fan of the previous chef and am pleased to see Olly Pierrepoint is getting towards Michelin standards.

Our meal at Driftwood was the best meal of our trip through Cornwall. The food was fantastic across the board (particularly the desserts), and the staff was incredibly welcoming and friendly. Unlike other Michelin restaurants, it never felt stuffy or self-important. The decor is homey and welcoming, and the staff was helpful and attentive without being overbearing. Also, critically, they were fantastic and flexible in dealing with some food allergies in our party.

We didn't stay the night - just came for dinner (although "just" is a bit of an understatement). The food was absolutely incredible and the view over the cliffs/sea as the sunset was perfect. A special mention to our waiter for the night - I would come back for dinner again just for him!

This place is amazing, really brilliant. We arrived and had canapes al-fresco. Then did the taster Menu, it was a special occasion so we pulled out all the stops!. If you are a foodie and want to celebrate this is the place to go on the South Coast Cornwall and not too far from Mevagissey. Lunch is more reasonable but the food is just as good.

Just went for afternoon drinks on the terrace so can't comment on the food but had to give a five star rating for the staff who were all absolutely lovely. The recommended Camel Valley fizz was excellent. Beautiful views over Porthbean beach and tranquil surroundings to relax in. Big lawns for children (who were made very welcome) to play on a sunny afternoon too.

We had dinner at Driftwood a week ago to celebrate a birthday and wedding anniversary, so we were splashing out for a special occasion. It was a beautiful summer evening and we had cocktails on the terrace while taking in the spectacular view. We decided on the 8-course taster menu without the accompanying wines. The decor inside the restaurant is lovely and the atmosphere relaxed. this was our first time inside a Michelin-starred restaurant yet we felt very much at home. The staff were charming and professional, and gave the impression that they enjoy their work, though we would encourage the head waiter to slow down a bit when presenting the dishes! Each plate of food was a miniature masterpiece, looking and tasting wonderful. Our favourite was the turbot. Only minor criticism was the two dessert dishes, one a slightly sickly meringue and the other a delicious rich chocolate dish which needed to be a little lighter. There was no sense of hurry and the meal lasted almost three hours, which was impresive us. Towards the end of the meal the owner, Fiona, who had been sitting at the next table, came over and introduced herself - a nice touch. Thanks to all for making it an evening which we will remember!

Visited with our young daughter and all had the 5 course tasting menu which was excellent. Very accomplished seasoning and balanced flavours throughout and presented well. Dessert was outstanding especially with the ginger beer sorbet and the local dessert wine pefect to go with it. Very polite front of house, exceptionally smart and not at all stuffy..the tall gentleman had a great sense of humour and worked the dining room brilliantly, great to see. The views are spectacular and restaurant very clean with relaxed atmosphere.

We stayed for one night while walking the coast path. The Tree Tops room was very comfortable and beautifully maintained. The dinner and buffet style breakfast were plentiful and delicious. Excellent value for money. A little far from the coast after a long days hike but well worth it.

We live in Falmouth and I would thoroughly recommend MINE and will definitely be going again. Very accomplished cooking - very clean flavours, perfectly cooked pigeon, pork and gurnard - all too easy to overcook but these were just right. We shared one veg which was plenty - gently spiced braised lettuce hearts - unusual and worked very well. A decent bottle of wine at £31 and wine by the glass from £7 for 175ml seemed reasonable and the prices for food are pretty average for Falmouth so very good value for such excellent quality. The place was stuffed with locals on a Thursday night late Sept - says it all!
