The Shipmans in Northampton

I popped in for a beer this week and found the welcome warm and they had Red Stripe on draughty. Ownership have clearly spent money on upgrading the pub, so much so that a painter was in the venue touching up the decor in various places. Would visit again for a longer period.

Came for a bottomless brunch. Staff were spot on! Friendly, accommodating and helpful. The food was amazing! Setting was very welcoming and the music was great. Would definitely recommend. Thanks all!

For a winters evening, not particularly cozy or warm…. Quite sparse in all. I don’t normally drink wine in a pub, but on this occasion I did and nearly fell off my stool when two, albeit large, glasses of wine came to over 20 quid… I used to come here 20 or 30 years ago occasionally but the problem with this place now is it can’t decide what it is. Is it a town pub for the 20s and 30s as they’re trolling through on a Saturday night or is it a quiet pub for all ages and a bit of respite from all the other muchness of a muchness pubs scrabbling for the same market that litter the streets of the town centre. If I was running this place, I’d make it cosier and I wouldn’t be charging over 20 quid for two glasses of very average 5 quid a bottle wine.

The menu and food were a disappointment I wanted the chicken wings but they thought they would improvise and cut up a chicken burger. The chips were cold the coleslaw had a nice kick to it. The old menu was better pub grub when I had the ploughman's

We booked a table of 8 in August for their Christmas menu. We wasn’t told we need to pre book or anything. Last night we arrived and was told no Christmas menu but a Jamaican style menu only as we hadn’t pre booked. Our table was booked for 6.30. We were left for ages before ordering. Then the waitress who was lovely, took our order. We then waited 45 mins for our starter. So that arrived just after 7.30. I had the halloumi fries that came with a spicy dip. They were quite nice We then waited about 50 minutes for main and my friend did go and chase these. I had the wrap which had one peice of chicken and a whole heap of the spiciest, saltiest fries I have ever eaten. (Couldn’t eat them) We all moaned out the chips ! I wouldn’t recommend the shipments for food.

We booked a last-minute Christmas party here. There was 14 of us so we had the whole upstairs dining room to ourselves. The room was decorated beautifully for Christmas. Our waitress was very warm and friendly and attentive. The food was really excellent absolutely delicious. The Christmas menu was £32 a head for 3 courses. We would all like to return again and sample the standard menu which has a Jamaican theme. Would totally recommend booking upstairs room for a private dining party 🎉 Feedback We would’ve preferred to have the option to only order two courses for Christmas menu and were disappointed that a few of the items we had selected weren’t available, but it didn’t ruin our evening and we had a really fabulous time.

Andy and his team did an excellent job under very difficult circumstances. Unfortunately, the food was provided by a third party caterer and we were assured that the quality was below Andy’s expectations. Let’s just remember how hard people work over the festive period, and cut the servers a bit of slack.

Little gem of an old historic pub having been tastefully modernised to a high standard

We prebooked meals for a family pre-Christmas gathering for 13 people on 15/12/24. The welcome, room & drinks service was fine but the pre-ordered meal was a big disappointment. 3 people pre-ordered nut roasts, these were unavailable & the substitute was beetroot wellington - ugh! The chickpea curry was a poor replacement. The meat dishes were served on cold stoneware plates, small meat, potato & veg portions. The roast pork loin was just a thin strip of rind & fat with no actual meat! Side dishes of Mac & cheese offered as part of the Caribbean roast was not supplied until requested & an order of chips for a young diner took ages to appear. No desserts were available. Apparently the catering is by a third-party provider with meals being plated by a young server in a small kitchen. This was a memorable meal for the wrong reasons. The pub can’t deliver what it offers, is poor value for money & best avoided.

Don't ever go there. God damn awful !!!

Just wanted to say a massive thank you to those working last Thursday. Had the most excellent Xmas party with my work and it wouldn’t have happened without the team on last Thursday!

Great pub excellent Sunday roast. Though I’m convinced it’s haunted. Watched my wife’s pint gently slide off the table, very strange indeed. Great staff always happy, friendly and helpful.

Very nice place. The bar ran out of cream and lime, but the bartender made me a very nice pornstar and french martini. I am a cocktail critic but they were both really really tasty. The pornstar had no fresh passionfruit garnish but that was not a big issue for me. The bartender did some nice flair bartending for us and when asking him more about it, we learned that he once attended flair competitions even competing with Tom Dyer. We had no food so cannot rate that, but overall a very nice experience.

Booked over a week ago for 6 ppl. Cancelled today with one hours notice - really disappointing. Advised the chef was ill. Unable to then book anywhere else at such short notice.

It was a great pub with a quiet atmosphere around it, The food and service were amazing, and the food had just served like a proper restaurant would.

Came here with my husband and a couple of friends. Staff were really friendly and a good laugh! A couple or teething problems with some new stuff but honestly, nothing to worry about. All was dealt with efficiently and with a smile. Cocktails are SO GOOD as is the service. Will definitely be coming back! Thank you Andy and team!

The venue was amazing, the staff were amazing! Especially Steph and Luke! We was given a room to ourselves as there was a few of us! Excellent experience would recommend 100%

A very old pub brought back to life lovingly and with respect for it's history. Anyone who enjoyed this special little pub back in the 'old days' should pop in for a little stroll down memory lane, just like I do occasionally. The bar is original and the place looks a lot posher now with nice soft lighting instead of florescent strips of yesteryear! There are 2 dinning rooms upstairs, both beautifully decorated and the toilets are quirky and in keeping with the age of this property (well sort of) and on a rainy day like today it's a perfect venue for a little respite away from dismal weather. Or a perfect place to lunch with friends especially in the dinning room that overlooks Drum Lane on a warm day with the windows open. Earlier this year we popped in for a quick lunch and ended up staying for 5 hours! The decor is comfy and relaxing. Don't take my word for it, take a friend, order a bottle and time will fly. And yes they do their very best to cater for everyone, including those of us that don't do so well with stars etc. Amazing how well they actually do considering it is such a compact space.

Love dogs ...after visiting 12 restaurants and pubs in Northampton this was the first who welcomed the dogs ...for great drinks even better guys behind the bar just genuinely lovely guys

Had the pleasure of being served by Dylan he is a great laugh and a decent bloke to chat too knows his stuff and was a great bartender wonderful chats and great service great job pal

A nice and welcoming pub with a great choice of food. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Good choice of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks available, all at a reasonable price. The food was freshly cooked and served as requested. If I am in Northampton again and need great food in pleasant surroundings, The Shipmans will be at the top of my list. Thanks Guys

Popped into Shipmans when I was up town to see what they have done with the place. Very impressed with the refurb, although was told it had re-opened two years ago. It was happy hour and a Negroni was on the menu - well it would be rude not to. Two for the price of one (well almost as it is a "Special") and I've got to say they were some of the best Negroni's I've had in a long while. Not too much ice - as I like it - and pleased to see that the garnish was, correctly, orange peel rather than the ubiquitous orange slice. I'd give it 10/10

After months of walking past and seeing the lovely food through the windows we finally managed to call in for a Sunday roast and we were definitely not disappointed. The food was excellent, well presented and served quickly. The roast beef was cooked to perfection and melted in the mouth. The staff were friendly and attentive and a special mention to Ali and Luke who made us feel welcome. Also excellent music 🎵 Would definitely recommend and we will be back.

Great Sunday lunch with friends, I think this is fourth time we have eaten at shipman’s since it opened and we have always enjoyed the food and ambiance. Alice was our server today and she definitely knows how to look after customers, nothing was too much trouble, thank you for a lovely afternoon.

What a lovely Sunday lunch had out this afternoon with my aunt. I booked a table on line, all very easy and asked for a table down stairs, we picked where we sat so that was great. I'd explained we needed downstairs as aunt in her early 80's and I was bringing her for a birthday treat. The staff were lovely, attentive and my aunt told them a story about my nan and great nan coming to Shipmans in the 1920's with nan sitting outside with her pop and snacks. My aunt was presented with a lovely pudding of her choice decorated with candles and happy birthday - a lovely touch and we sang happy birthday. It made her day and she thoroughly enjoyed herself - thank you Shipmans it was great and the pudding was on the house, how sweet of you!!

Food is extremely tasty ... Enjoyable place to go . The staff are really friendly. The new Manager is keen on keeping on improving the pub too . Charles

What a lovely spot for a Sunday toast. Staff can’t do enough for you, and get you the best seats near the fire. Arrive with love and heart. We had a trio of roasts and beef was our favorite. We like lashing of gravy and they were only too happy to keep it coming. Finished with biscoff cheesecake, teas and coffee. My wife loves the music so we chilled after. Thanks team. 💙

We had Sunday lunch here today, well my granddaughter had three small plates and cauliflower/brocolli cheese. Her mum had the belly of pork and I had the blade of beef. A little pricey but worth every penny as everything was cooked to perfection, the gravy was delicious and the yorkies were light and crispy. The service was also great, Allie was very warm and made sure we had a day to remember.

We have been greeted and looked after by very nice staff and enjoyed our stay very much. Looks tiny from the outside but has great spaces inside.

Visited with a group of friends. Although the staff were friendly and helpful, the food was disappointing. It was bought out separately with a long gap in between, where people were left sitting while the others eat, which made me feel uncomfortable. It was not possible for the first people served to wait as the gap was too long. It was a Shame as it was obvious a lot of care had been taken in making the place look nice.

We visited yesterday for Sunday lunch with our middle son and daughter-in-law. Our son used to visit Shipmans in the late 90s and was interested to see what it looked like after being closed for so long. The service was helpful and pleasant, our food was delicious and there's a really nice atmosphere. Thoroughly recommended!

Stopped in for a roast dinner on the way back from an appointment. I had the slow cooked pork belly with sausage meat stuffing which was amazing. To me , the sign of how good a roast dinner is is how well the roast potatoes...
