The Ship Inn in St. Helens

Today I was a part of a walking group of 28 people! i really was not expecting the amazing standard of ALL the dishes that came from the kitchen. It’s a few years since i have eaten here, but it was delicious 😋i had the multi seed avocado with tandoori chicken kebab with a pineapple and ginger dressing absolutely gorgeous. My friends all raved about their choices all the dishes were hot, considering it was a large group service was great 10/10. Well done Tracey and Theresa and your team 😋 I will be back next week and will recommend to all my family and friends.

Very busy Understaffed Staff were apologetic and polite I'd heard good things about the place but won't rush back

Just had lunch, food was excellent as was the service. Very nice atmosphere and Megan was very efficient and and helpful.

Lovely pub with real working fireplaces, great food and dog friendly too. Really good choices on menu and veggie options are really tasty. They allow dogs and have a water bowl and some nice treats too. There is a premier inn right behind the pub too if you decide to make a night of it. 🤪

Lovely food and was lovely being sat next to the fire

Came in for brunch and a swift half, nice warm atmosphere, good range of different breakfast and lunch options, good range of draught and cask ales

We came as a family to try the sunday dinners at the ship inn and they were delicious, even the kids ones were huge and had plenty on them. The beef was amazing and just fell off the bone!! There was a bit of a wait for our food to come, but the lady serving us noticed that the kids were getting rowdy and came over with some colouring pages and crayons for them which kept them busy while we waited which we appreciated but it was worth waiting when it came. Will be back soon to get that beef rib again

Came for a sunday lunch today as we've heard that its good and it did not disappoint. Unfortunately when we arrived they had ran out of the duo dinners and the roasties but we were offered mash and baby potatos instead which were lovely. We will be back earlier next time to try the different meats but the chicken we had was gorgeous thanks for the lovely meal

Just had Sunday dinner, even though it was 8pm, the food was fresh and hot, the breef rib just fell off the bone. We are lucky to have this just round the corner. Staff are brilliant, an all round good night out.

Great friendly atmosphere, pet friendly and great food.

The staff are great, friendly and knowledgeable about their business. I like that it is dog friendly and unlike some pub chains you can eat from the full menu and not just snacks at the bar. There is a designated area where you can sit with your pet and they provide tins with dog biscuits, chews and bowls of water. The atmosphere is friendly and warm.

After a 4hr drive from Wales,very friendly staff nice location and food was stunning Definitely visit again

Live local and try to come out to eat as often as we can! Been to the Ship only a couple of times before last time in July and it was ok! Went again this evening with family! Sat for 50 minutes waiting for food! Had to ask for desserts after 30 minutes of finishing main course and then desserts arrived and plates still hadn’t been taken even though several glass collectors had collected our empty glasses! Very disappointed this evening!

Absolutely lovely team who couldn't help enough after what could have been a big issue. One of our team had an accident outside the pub and the ladies here were quick to help us. Leaving a review as stopped in for a coffee today and will be brining the dog and wife here for a meal next week. Lovley team, beautiful pub and food smelled great! Thank you for looking after our team member until I arrived on site.

Very nicely cooked food with a nice service. I would have preferred to see more dishes with just chicken and no bacon. Chicken and fish are the only meats I eat.

My husband and I visited on 25th July for what we thought would be a quick bite. 1hour 35 minutes later our food arrived. It was a Thursday night,the pub was pretty empty I counted 3 members of staff and the manager. Arrived approx 6.45pm bought a drink then ordered food at 7pm. Our meals arrived at 8.20pm! I made 3 trips to the bar to check on the delay to be told by Theresa that they had a large party that were being seen to first. Theresa although polite, didn't seem bothered. A drink was offered by way of apology but this seemed half hearted. Food wasn't great either not like it once was. Very disappointed. Furthermore less than a week later, we received a parking fine for £100. Parking notices didn't seem obvious to us. We didn't execpt to record our information to park at the pub. Apparently you need to input your details when you arrive on a pad. Thankfully we were able to sort this out, we had to prove we'd been there. Maybe a reminder on the tables or on the receipt will be helpful to remind customers to record their visit. Poor service all round, we won't be returning.

Great experience, we come quite often as a couple and we're never disappointed. The staff are very helpful, and are always willing to go above and beyond to make your experience a good one, and the food is amazing, I definitely recommend the Tandoori Skewer, one of our favourites! Can't wait to come back!

Staff went above and beyond compared to many places who take customers for granted. Food was served with an appetising appeal and tasted as good as it looked. Will certainly consider as our local for meals

Very disappointing. Sunday roast had been recommended by a relative but don't understand why. Waited 30 minutes for meal to arrive and when it did the chicken was still on the bone with skin on and the gammon was wafer thin. The roast potatoes tasted like warm ups from frozen and there was no cauliflower cheese available even though it was on the menu. Asked for mustard but told they didn't have any so asked for Cranberry sauce. Waitress said she would bring some but never returned with any. Will stick to a Toby carvery in future.

Went in today as a party of 12, everyone said the food was really good. I had the fish and chips, and can honestly say it was the best fish I've ever had in a pub. Very impressed and will be back.

Ordered at the table via the Ember Inns App, my friend and I ordered the 'Fixed Price Evening Two Course Set Menu'. We both ordered the Beer Battered Mushrooms served with a Cool Sour Cream Dip for our starters & the Thick Cut Gammon Steak served with Seasoned Chips, Garden Peas, Grilled Tomato and your choice of Two Free Range Fried Eggs, Chargrilled Fresh Pineapple or one of each for our mains. On the drinks menu there are 0.0% Rekorderlig Strwberry & Lime which we ordered at the bar but were told they didn't have any so Water it was for us! We waited approximately 45 minutes and then enquired at the bar how long our meals would be as we had popped out from a nearby hospital and wanted to back there as quickly as possible due to our friends deteriating health, we were told there was a delay with food, an unknown male customer at the bar was sniggering and seemed amused by our enquiry! When our food then arrived at the table our main course was served before the starter. The Thick Cut Gammon was nice but the Chips were Definateley not Seasoned chips just plain frozen chips that were still hard in places, my friend ordered two eggs and I ordered one of each, the eggs were overcooked and hard, the Pineapple was nice although sliced very thin. The Beer Battered Mushrooms arrived half way through our main course but with a bbq dip without explanation. We asked about the cool sour cream dip and were then told 'oh sorry we havnt got any!' The Mushrooms were stuck together and quite greasy. The money we had paid for the Mushrooms was refunded at the end of our meal. Another couple that were eating in the dog friendly area of the pub put the pubs crockery on the floor and let their dog eat off it! Our experience at The Ship Inn was not good on this occasion and we probably wouldn't return!

Visited this pub with my partner food was lovely and the service from Teresa was second to none she made sure we had everything and checked with us to make sure we was ok for everything

First time I've been here & wanted to go for a while & wasn't disappointed. It's a lovely pub, oldie style, very relaxing. Plenty of seating with different size tables & I love the eclectic choice of chairs with each one. Food was lovely, fresh made, and not ping (microwave) food, which is a big pet hate of mine. It's order at table using QR code & wasn't a long wait for food to arrive. Staff are very friendly & helpful. The toilets were nice & clean. My only negative is the car park is very small & tight. *Also if you go by car please go to the machine inside the pub & enter your numberplate details, if you don't you will receive a parking fine* I will visit again & I would definitely recommend The Ship Inn.

This is a really nice, friendly pub. There is a decent selection of beers and other drinks on the menu. We had a couple of meals there while staying in the nearby hotel and the food was nice and not overpriced. We need more pubs like the Ship Inn.

Sadly the ship inns bottomless brunch wasn’t the experience I am used to at this establishment,, I’ve been more than a dozen times before and never complained until now,,

Been here a few time but the food today was terrible mixed grill all meat burnt n black n chips hard

We stopped here for quick lunch and a pint and enjoyed the friendly service with reasonable prices

The food and service were excellent. The choice on the new menu was lovely. My daughter is vegetarian and myself and my other daughter, is pescatarian. There was also my mum who has an allergy to cows milk. Everyone was catered for. And allergy compliance followed. Thank you

No vegetarian option was available had sold out ended up with a veggi burger and Sunday roast veg all cabbage and peas maybe some onions or it might have been leeks starter arrived after main course and was cold soggy beer baterd mushrooms won't be visiting here again

Scrambled egg served on bread , dry bread ! Bacon sandwich served on bread, dry bread Most unappetising. The Ship used to be a favourite for breakfast …. not any more.

Went the ship inn with family and we had a baby with us table booked for 18.30 and we were still waiting at 20.15 and still not food by this time a member of my family had to leave with the baby eventually the food appeared and after the food we waited another 40 mins for the sweet as we were leaving not one member of staff had the decency to apologise for the long wait not bothered in the slightest so no definitely won’t be visiting here again.

We visited as a large party for my son’s birthday, there was 14 of us, we all ordered separately either on the app or at the bar - and our server checked that they’d received all of our orders before confirming them with the kitchen so that they all came out at the same time. A few of our party got the rib of beef Sunday dinner and said it was absolutely incredible, just fell off the bone - all of our meals were great, we really enjoyed our visit - friendly staff, willing to stop and have a chat and help you. Thanks, we’ll be back soon!

First time visiting here even though it's quite local, there is a different menu for Sundays so we chose from the regular menu which offers typical pub food. Portions aren't on the large side- the chicken dish I wanted was all gone so I opted for the pie sadly it was over cooked and the crust was solid... my partners burger was 'ok' she replied but lacked a side salad / garnish. There is a nice open fire and it's quite a large place with ample parking, staff were friendly, It was basically a quick tea out and much the same as 100's of similar pub chain outlets you come across.

Food was lovely, wait times from our starters to our mains were a little longer than anticipated but this was due to how busy it was. The food was worth the wait though. Thank you Ship inn you done a great job on a busy Friday night

My wife and I come here every chance we can. The food is great the staff are great and the atmosphere is great. One of the best pubs in Rainhill give it a try you won’t be disappointed. And dog friendly too-five stars for me

Been to the ship inn a few times over the last few months and it never fails to amaze us the staff are lovely always smiling and nothing is ever too much for them annd the food is gorgeous. Really enjoy the seabass and the chicken curry my only wsih is that there were more potatos with the seabass but that's just me being greedy 😂 definitely worth a visit if you're in the area!

We went to the ship inn to celebrate a family birthday. The food and service was, as always excellent. On top of that the prices were good value. All in all everyone had a very enjoyable experience

Went in for a cheeky post work pint and some nibbles. They got a real nice ipa and some belting cheesy garlic bread. Servers Lauren and Theresa were proper sound. Will be returning for more cheeky post work pints and nibbles

service from staff good as was the way the meals were prepared however, the quality of the steak was very poor. Cooked rare as I asked but almost 50% inedible. Server asked to draw chefs attention as supplier needs pulling up or changing. . This was my 4th choice of dish as first three not available. My wife’s scampi meal was good thankfully The Ships a great place for a meal but the meat quality needs to vastly improve

Bar staff great service poor just placed food on table never asked if would like anything else like sauces. Never once asked if everything was ok witch was not chicken rock hard potoes hard not taste at all just bland.yes exchanged chicken 15 mins later.overall worst meal I have ever had from the ship inn

Service very slow 2 hours for a meal and don’t order a sundae as you get a glass full of squirty with a sprinkle of choc really disappointing

Had a meal with my friends food just about edible lady that looked like the manager served us not a smile in sight or a friendly welcome so has put me of returning cost nothing to feel welcomed

The food was okay until a spider was discovered in my granddaughters mash potato. How did it get there. Daily specials could not be found on the app.

what can I say we came here yesterday as we fancied a change from our usual go to places and was not disappointed from the pub to the staff and food we couldn't fault anything and getting sat near the real fire was a nice touch also Victoria our server couldn't do enough for us and will definitely be back so for a wonderful visit we thankyou Tracy and her team

1st time going here, celebrating our Daughter's 40th Birthday , we will definitely be going back , the slow cooked rib of beef were amazing , the meat literally just fell off the bone , beautifully cooked , the staff were lovely too

I had a rather enforced stay at the excellent Premier Inn next door toThe Ship. Over two weeks I was in and out trying different ales and the food throughout the day. Having worked in businesses where customer service is paramount and high standards should be consistent I was deeply impressed with absolutely everything. Indeed so were all the customers I saw come, go and return. The welcome is indeed very warm from Tracy and her dedicated team. Nothing was ever too much trouble for them. They make everyone feel special and included. Regardless of whether the customers were 'local' or caually dropping in for a drink, the service was top notch. I can attest to the quality of the food provided and their desire to ensure that everyone leaves satisfied with memories to cherish and repeat. I can recommend the brunch breakfast and the 'Posh Fish and Chips, but everything I tried was first class, freshly cooked and served thoughtfully and promptly. Children are welcomed looked after with a great kid's menu. In addition, should you wish to bring you dog along to enjoy the warmth of the real fires they are also welcome. There is carparking aplenty and also in the warmer weather a front and rear 'beer garden'. I shall be reluctantly leaving to return home soon but I won't forget my experience. Tradition values are alive and well and the kindness of the staff to me is a testament to the honesty, friendliness and empathy that exist in human nature. If you are looking for a quick relaxing drink with great ales and fine wines, wish to let the team organise a bigger party for you, or just want to pop in to try The Ship out for size, I thoroughly recommend it.
