The Black Bull in St. Helens

Fantastic food and service on 14/11/2024,25 family members all had a lovely time at The Blackbull !! Nicola looked after everyone and made sure the meals where served perfectly, she is a gem x Thank you to the chefs for the gorgeous food and getting it out so quick x

Went last week to celebrate a friends birthday. The lunches were excellent , service was really good and a comfortable place to enjoy a meal and very reasonably priced. Can highly recommend - will definitely visit again.

The food was OK,,,but I thought the seating could be arranged better,,, the staff could stop chewing gum behind the bar while serving,not a good look,,The Bull used to be a fabulous pub,, always packed,,not so much now, it will be a while before we go back,if ever,,such a shame,,

What a brilliant place for families and kids

Nice pub food not the best had better elsewhere for the price big portions but all seemed a bit over cooked or warmed up roast dinners looked really nice though .

Fund raising night with Dani Hunt as "Making it Madonna" .. excellent highly professional performance. Lively and enthusiastic crowd, loud music and lot of dancing. Friendly and efficient staff .. reasonably priced drinks.

We have dined at the other 2 pubs in the area and are happy to say the food at the Bull and Dog is the best so far. We will definitely be returning as the food has greatly improved since my last visit. Thank you

I ordered 4 portions of chips , but I think the oil in the chip pan needs changing , myself , daughter and 2 grandchildren all had stomach ache half way through eating our chips .

Ordered 2 wraps and a bowl of chips. Food took just under an hour to come and there was only 5 people in the place. Absolutely shocking food service.

Fantastic pub for service, food, and atmosphere. Great team of staff, very attentive and friendly. Food is outstanding, portions are generous. Genuine home cooked meals. Prices are reasonable, great pub/restaurant for all ages. Has a family/children diner with play area. Large garden area to the rear with seating and climbing frame/inflatable for children. Lovely function room, a little tired looking, but “scrubs up” really well with self decor. Staff very accommodating with assisting with the function room (we had our Wedding reception there last year). The buffets we ordered were amazing. Total recommend The Black Bull. We hired the room out for a family party, the food was provided by the pub, it was excellent, and really nice and plenty of it. There is also a children's play area. Prices are average. Would highly recommend for a function, or just going for a meal.

Great place for Sunday diner, going out with friends for drink . Nice for kids ( inflatable castle available outsider depending weather )

When I went up to order our meals I was ignored by the girl behind the bar who was too busy on her phone to serve me. I ordered The Black Bull dog which is listed in the menu as a hot dog with ketchup, mustard and onions. When it arrived it had none of the above on it. We gave it back to the girl behind the bar who said chef doesn't put anything on it because he's had complaints and you have to ask for onions but put your own ketchup and mustard on out of the satchets provided. When the meal arrived back at the table, the onions were described as crispy.....try cremated! I put ketchup on out of the satchels and went to put mustard on. The problem being it was English Mustard which would blow your head off if you put a satchet of that on a hotdog! Everyone knows it's American Mustard for hotdogs. Off to the bar we went again to ask for American Mustard.....oh, we don't have that. Absolutely pathetic. We won't be going there again any time soon.

I would highly recommend the black bull. I had my wedding reception in the faction room. Rebecca and the team dressed the room for me and made my evening amazing. The staff are all friendly and went above and beyond to ensure my day/ evening went smoothly and stress free. I had an outside caterer to do a buffet for me but when I arrived after my wedding the food was no where near enough to feed my family and friends. I had payed a few hundred pounds for a few trays of food. So the staff at the black bull had the chef come out to speak to me about what I wanted and what they could offer to fill the table. After no more than half an hour the table was filled with a high standard and well presented section of food. They really save the day at a drop of a hat. Not many pubs like the black bull.

We had our son's 4th Birthday party here in July & it was an amazing experience. The staff are all so lovely & go the extra mile to make it a day to remember. All the Children loved it. Highly recommended for children's parties.

We only live down the road, we visit quite often, food is lovely and reasonably priced, never had a bad meal. Staff are lovely, very friendly and very chatty. Have entertainment on of a weekend. Separate kids room with play area, 2 bouncy castles outside (weather permitting). Function room. Lovely friendly atmosphere, staff won't tolerate any idiots, anyone being a nuisance is asked to leave. Couple of cosmetic issues but it's a locals local so it doesn't need to be all fancy like some pubs, it's somewhere you can meet friends and just have a nice meal, couple of drinks, watch some sport or listen to some live music.

Attended a party here. Large function room. Huge beer garden. Happy helpful staff in a clean and well looked after building. WIFI available and a decent food menu tho I didnt eat while here the food smelled great.

Had to ask for cutlery. They assume you don't want any maybe?

Had my little girls 2nd birthday in here. Staff were amazing nothing was too much trouble. I had 50 very happy people everyone enjoyed there food qnd all of the kids loved the play area.

Had a family gathering for a graduation. Staff couldn't do enough for us and the food was lovely. Great time had by everyone.

As a group of 6 we ordered our meals. After a 45 minute wait our meals started to arrive with 5 minute intervals the food was cold and my "medium " steak was dry and overcooked. The final.meal arrived after some of us had actually finished eating. It was cold and was sent back. The server gave a refund for this meal and we left with one if the group not eating at all and extremely hungry. Definitely wouldn't go back !!!

Went for lunch with a friend. We have been many times before but never experienced anything like this visit. There was "dance" music playing out of a speaker which was way too loud for the whole time that we were there.The manager, who we thinks name is Eric, had no customer service skills whatsoever.i asked for 2 diet coke,as one if us is diabetc and he served us 1 regularly coke and 1 diet coke. Our meals were like warm and tasteless.The plates were cold and the chips soggy. After the worst meal I have had in a very long time we decided on a pudding. Guess what??? We got the wrong puddings!!!.When we brought it to the attention of the manager he shrugged his shoulders and said "ohh that's my fault".No apology or offer of an exchange. All this time ,with only 5 people in the lounge the "dance" music blasted out. By this time we just wanted to go home.i asked for the bill.No apology from the manager regards to the service, food, and noise from his "dance" music. It will be a very long time before we will be visiting the Blackbull.We were not the only people to feel this way on that particular day. The girls who work behind the bar are so friendly and professional. Nothing is too much trouble for them.its just a pity that none of them was in on this particular day. Your manager Eric needs to up his game or else the blackbull will loose a lot of respectable customers.

Love this place. The garden is great for kids and there is usually bouncy castles up. The food is really good and like home made. The bar staff are lovely too.

Came for a kids birthday party. Soft play side of bar was disgusting. Furniture is filthy, your feet stick to the floor. The toilet floors are flooded with water and wet tissue paper. Whole place needs a whole lot of love. There is no pride in this building, such a shame as it could be a gem. I felt we all needed a shower after leaving. Kids food seemed ok and service was speedy if without a smile. Used to be a brilliant place, gone to rot

Had my child's 5th birthday party here and it was absolutely amazing. Kids and adults loved it. Staff (especially Anthony) were great. Would definitely recommend.

This pub is superb! we came here for my sons 4th birthday and it's now our go to place. The food is fantastic, they cooked the food perfectly and in particular chicken curry which was busrting with flavour, the kitchen team deserve alot of credit! All the front of house team were friendly, energetic and seemed to be organised really well! They made the whole time extra enjoyable. Plenty for kids to do as well when it's sunny the bouncy castles go up outside and a large field for the kids to play. For parents with young kids I'd definitely recommend this place.

Hired function room for a 40th birthday meal of over 25 people. Service was amazing on time and especially with getting all the meals right and all one after the other. and all was perfectly cooked. The pub itself was packed too, so hats off to use you made it a great day. Booked in again for another gathering can not wait

We visit friends regularly in St Helens and always go to the Black Bull for a meal. The food is plentiful and absolutely gorgeous. The homemade coleslaw is in a league of its own . Thank you, see you soon

We had our Grandson's Christening in the function room and it was excellent. All the staff were friendly and helpful and the buffet was amazing. There was a wide variety of dishes at a very reasonable price. As it was a sunny day the bouncy castles were up which all the kids loved.

Amazing for children with the soft play area and bouncy castles, my boys love it. Food is also amazing, would highly recommend and will definitely be back!

We come here every week, we eat here at least once a week. The staff and friendly and helpfull. Lovely atmospher, food is absolutly gorg and lovely and hot.

The Black Bull is WORST food we've had in a long time..waited over an hour for it come.. Mixed grill, all meat was nuked in the microwave, rock hard, chips were anaemic, onion rings with NO ONION and burnt batter and sauces had skins on...

We paid the black bull a visit to watch Shadowlands.... 1st eve visit... and when I walked in I was at first uncomfortable as it’s not my type of place.No real ale, a bit tired...but can I say I had my mind changed.Firstly, a very warm hearted young lady went out of her way to get my wife a green tea.... whoever you are you are lovely...thank you.The food was very very good..so chef..I’m impressed The staff worked hard all night...I noticed that.So thanks to the black bull for having us, a couple of pub snobs.... Literally the most awful place I have ever been to firstly we had burnt clearly reheated food with hair in it then we got slagged off to the regulars by the manager for asking for a refund I caught her doing it. Then came home to disgusting messages from this same manager. My fiancé was attacked and disfigured and she thinks this is funny! Pictures are below go to this place if you want terrible food equally terrible service and abuse don’t waste your money McDonald’s is better on its worst day!

Lovely lunch with my sisters, this is the second time we’ve been here, everything was freshly cooked, will be back, friendly staff and can’t do enough for you. They catered for all our needs as we all have specific dietary requirements. We have put this on our “list” for our lunches. Great pub.

I attended a family get together at the Black Bull Bull a few weeks ago. we where able to use a private room with its own bar. Got to say the hot food buffet with hotpot and salt and pepper chip etc was spot on. If you like home cooked food with real chips (the best i have tasted for many a long year) this is the place. Lovely staff and compliments to the chef. Great night.

After being let down badly by their chosen venue they had to relocate, the black bull provided a room which the manager and a member of staff personally cleaned following a children’s party, the room was amazing and the staff were very friendly and couldn’t do enough. I would recommend this venue to anyone who is looking for a clean private space for a family celebration, they also provided chips and nuggets for 20 children for 30 pounds! Amazing place amazing staff and a wonderful friendly manager! Thank you xxx

I can not recommend this place enough, I got let down last minute from my venue and the manager at the black bull went above and beyond to allow me to have my party here. All the staff was so helpful and made what was a stressful day into a good day with lots of smiles. Will definitely be using the venue again.
