Friendly pub next to the beach. Good selection of beers including their own . I think their food offering is more snacks than main meal...so it's really about the beer.. TT likes the place.

Obviously very popular after a walk on the nearby beach. Full of dogs, which is ok if they're well trained. My food was nice, but hubby's toastie was overcooked and looked really unappetising . He said it was just about ok. Unfriendly waiting staff

A proper pub, in a beautiful location, serving the best crab sandwiches and beer. We visit lots of places in our campervan and The Ship Inn is up there. We love the walk on the beach from Embleton to enjoy this traditional pub. The fact it is always super busy is our only gripe but this is clearly testament to this lovely little inn!

Spent a week in the Square in low Newton with the Ship inn being metres away. We visited the pub most days and had several evening meals there. The food was excellent, the staff very attentive, friendly and made us feel very welcome. The micro brewery on the premises served a range of beers, all very good. Thanks to the head brewer ( sadly I didn’t get his name) for making sure the “ sea dog “ dark ale was on tap for my last night and you were right, it was smokey. Marvellous. Revisiting September 2025 and looking forward to more of the same.

Lovely location and dog friendly. Lots of nice beers to choose from: the landlord had to give me a lowdown on the different offerings. Was busy on a Sunday afternoon, but we found space at an outside table. Didn't eat but the menu looked inviting and the food being served looked good.

Everything a pub should be. Great food and atmosphere, brew their own ales, dogs welcome, and friendly bar staff. We came twice on our stay in the area - at lunch on a busy Saturday and in the evening on a quieter Monday for some live folk music and it was perfect each time which not many pubs can manage. I can’t recommend it highly enough. Gorgeous pub

Unimpressed. Left hungry and feeling ripped off. Only got a 2 as the food we had was very fresh but £13.50 for a crab stottie and £10.50 for a crab sandwich you might get a leaf of salad or a couple of crisps with it. No such luck. Literally just an expensive bread and filling. The staff made no effort to engage at all. Our food was placed on the table without a word. No ambience, not good value and won't be going again. Feels like they rely on the location and lazily go through the motions with everything else.

Very nice pub with good beer in a picturesque location. Sadly, this is where it ends. Experienced shockingly rude service when we ate dinner which has completely ruined this pub for me (there appears to be a common theme in the reviews regarding this).

Really lovely food and excellent service. Unfortunately our evening was spoilt by one table with two dogs which barked throughout the evening and the owners who did little to dissuade them. Although the staff spoke to the owners they failed to take further action when the dogs continued to misbehave. The pub says "make sure your dog is well behaved" but the pub owner didn't take further action by serving them outside or asking them to take the dogs outside? To do nothing is just poor management. Dogs will be dogs is not excuse for poor behaviour and perhaps why some dogs are only tolerated rather than accepted?

Great location but that's about it. Beer was terrible, a queue out of the door otherwise I would have taken it back. Service was very impersonal. Unusual for this area as staff in other places have been amazingly friendly. We won't rush back.

Firstly, the evening meal we had here was delicious, though a little expensive. There is a limited choice of dishes and wine by the glass but what was available was very nice. You do need to book in the evenings too. Dog owners do take note, however, I would say dogs are tolerated rather than welcomed (particularly in the evening) and not appreciated if they are likely to make any noise. This is clearly a point of irritation for the landlady. Given the high percentage of dog owners who visit, who they are happy to take money from, this attitude is questionable! Diners are seated quite closely together in 2 reasonably small areas, if your dog will silently lie under the table in that situation, all well and good. If not, you may feel more relaxed going elsewhere with your pups. Another review on Trip Advisor in July confirms this. Dogs are dogs, accept them and everything about them or don’t accept them but don’t embarrass their owners, or any other paying customers, in the process!

Came here again whilst on a lovely walk from Craster. We’ve been a couple of times and it was an exceptionally busy day but, the crab sandwiches came with nothing, no crisps, not even a little garnish or anything included within them. I’ve been in the past and sure this wasn’t the case but in fairness it is as advertised on the menu. The tables weren’t cleared / wiped down between customers. No checks on food etc to see if it’s ok. Ultimately, I’d definitely recommend going, just perhaps order sides with the sarnies.

Called in on a sunny midweek lunchtime. The place was very busy but with a little patience we secured a decent table outdoors. There is not a massive outdoor space but adequate for the amount of folk there when we were there. Three of the four of us had the famed crab sandwiches and all was very good and tasty. There is a decent range of beers, many of which are brewed on the premises and the serving staff were pleasant enough even though things were very busy. The place is very dog friendly both inside and out. One big downer was the toilet, there is only one which is shared between ladies and gents and was horrid.

We do love going to this pub, we’ve been many times over a decade, but on recent visits we’ve felt like everything was a bit of a trial for them, pub also seems to have started taking over the village green for music and events as if it was their beer garden. Felt very grubby inside and outside. Seem to have the attitude that as the paying customer you should be grateful to be in there, and perhaps a reminder that people can spend their hard earned cash anywhere. Not particularly dog friendly, advertising themselves as such but it’s apparent that dogs are a nuisance to them. Should have listened to a couple of dog walking friends who had a similar experience. Much better pub up the hill with a warm welcome, good food, relaxed atmosphere, very clean and your dog doesn’t have to sit like a stuffed teddy bear.

A lovely pub in a picturesque location, but perpetually ruined by a really poor system whereby everyone is forced to order their food and drink at the tiny bar. There’s always a long queue at the bar which isn’t pleasant for those standing in the queue, those sat dining beside the queue, or the the staff bringing out food fighting their way past the queue. Surely table service would be a good idea, as well as a permanent outside bar for drinks?

Went for a Stargazing weekend. Positives: excellent food and accommodation. Location is ideal for walking Hadrian's wall/ visiting Sycamore Gap. Brilliant little microbrewery and tap room. Bar staff very friendly and knowledgeable. Negatives: very awkward interaction with one restaurant waitress on the first evening. Seen to the table but only 3 menus for 4 of us. She said she would get one but didn't. My wife went up to get it after some time only for the waitress to say " I can get that for you"! A bit late. Followed by no-one coming to take a drink or food order for over 20 minutes so we had to attract her attention. She did not apologise for the delay butclaimed to have been busy. We had watched her setting up tables for breakfast instead yet this was around 7.40 pm. When challenged on this she became aggressive rather than apologetic. She took the order but when asked for a jug of water, she ignored the request and stormed off. (the water did arrive, she just failed to acknowledge the request. This put our group at unease as we had 2 more breakfast and 1 dinner service to go! This may seem petty but it reaput a dampener on the weekend. Her customer service skills were non existent. All the other servers were polite, frank attentive. The bar seems to discourage later evening drinks as all the chairs/stools get put up on the tables as people leave, well before last orders. After coming in from the stargazing event around 10pm on a Sunday night, we weren't even sure that the bar was open. It was and the team were friendly but it just wasn't a welcoming environment to see the place ready for hoovering! Finally, the stargazing event was badly organised. There was no information at check in. We got most info from one of the waitresses and even then the directions weren't clear. We have been to an event down south before which had better presented information. The actual set up is very good with a great guest speaker. Unfortunately for us, rain and cloud stopped us from using the telescopes outside. The planetarium was an excellent facility. It is a shame that these issues affected what promised to be a great visit to a lovely pub.
