We visited on Wednesday evening, food was amazing and staff were lovely, table service was great! Would highly recommend to anyone visiting York 😊

Called up on the morning to see if they had a last minute table for that evening, which they accommodated no problem, even though they had a large function in, looked like a birthday I think. Staff were very welcoming and friendly, quickly bringing us a high chair and drinks. Again, staff were attentive to ensure our food was ordered quickly and arrived in a good amount of time, especially considering how busy they were. My Steak and Ale pie was tremendous, absolutely stuffed with massive chunks of meat, plus delicious chunky chips and gravy. My girlfriends Cajun Salmon was also very well received and the potato scallops were particularly good. The kids meal of chicken goujons was to my 4 year old's taste and my 1 year old really enjoyed the Yorkshire puddings and gravy. Would highly recommend.

Called in on the off chance for Sunday lunch They managed to fit us in, quite a few tables around us were taken or reserved. Two of us had the roasts (gammon and chicken) Fantastic potion sizes and the nicest cauliflower cheese. Veggie option was a mushroom risotto which isn’t to my daughter taste so she gad fish and chips. Said it was lovely and the chips the best she’s had in a long time Fantastic service from the bar staff to waiter Great value for money

The burgers used to be so good with the previous owner, it could have actually been the owner before that as they have switched often

Called in today as we were doing a bit of shopping in the area and the head chef is an old friend I've not seen in over 30 years.. The staff were very welcoming to me and my fiancée and our little Jack Russell, and the food was first class and we could not fault it.. Sunday lunch is highly recommended.. Will definitely be returning.

Food was very good. Staff were friendly and attentive. We had early bird meals at £14.00 each. Plenty of outside tables.

We booked a table ready for our arrival on Sunday for a week away in York. We were greeted with a friendly smile, shown to our table and he explained all of what was on offer in detail. Something a lot of Employees don’t do anymore. It was very refreshing. We had starters and main. Freshly prepared food and excellent quality and lots of it too! Beef and the pork were so tender, roast potatoes and veg were freshly cooked and the Yorkshire puddings were amazing! They had run out of apple sauce so even went over to the shop across the road to get some for us! We will be back! Can’t believe we have to wait until Wednesday now when they open again! We will be back before we leave 😁

A true local pub but still friendly towards visitors

Fantastic food and the chef was kind enough to give us free ice-cream with our cheese cake which wasn't part of the dish. Always come here with my mum, wonderful staff, wonderful food, wonderful people 👍

Celebrated my husbands birthday with family. Sunday lunch was excellent and generous portion of meat. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and they had decorated the table with blue balloons! Our dog had a great time too… with a lovely cold bowl of water and numerous treats. Thank You, it was perfect!

Found this pub on arrival for a weekend stay in York and what a fabulous pub, the staff were so friendly and made us feel so welcome, we ate here both nights we stayed at our accommodation and the food was amazing, best fish and chips I’ve ever had, all of the staff were fab and everybody we met in this pub staff, other customers were just so lovely we really did enjoy being in this lovely pub,we will definitely be back in the future and look forward to seeing you all again and eating some beautiful food again. HBH and friends eat out at a pleasant typical English village pub. The restaurant is separate from the bar. Helpful staff regarding allergies. My, dairy free, chicken dish was adjusted accordingly and became a tasty chicken and veg with vegan gravy.

Was very disappointed with the cost for drinks, an old mould cider cost usually £4.70, here it was £7.80, wine was also expensive, sandwiches most expensive in the area. Advise durham ox for a better dining experience and lower cost, won't be back.

Called in for food but they do not serve food on a Monday, had a small bottle of 0 alcohol and was charged £4.25 the same price of a pint of John Smiths.The table was all sticky and the place was in my opinion in need of a good clean. I would look elsewhere as this place is not the best.

Brilliant meal and staff are lovely and very dog friendly which is great. The only minus I have is that I ordered a non alcoholic mout cider as I was driving to be charged £7.10 for it. How is that right when the alcolic one is cheaper again the drivers being penalised for driving people to the pub to spend there ?

We called in off chance because I was really hungry after a long trip from South Wales. I had fish and chips. I asked for garden peas and got mushy peas. The fish was huge and nice, but I don't know what happened to the chips. They were almost black, soggy, greasy and grey inside. Yuk! I don't know if this is the way they cook them in Yorkshire but not nice at all. The ladies loo was really smelly and the hand drier didn't work. Won't call again, sorry.

Used to come here a lot pre-kids, not been since new owners, and boy it's gone downhill. Booked for 8, arrived early and ordered our mains and starters at the first opportunity. Food was excellent, but at about 9.15 we finished our mains and waited for the waitress to come and take our plates so we could order dessert. She never reappeared so I went to the bar after 20 mins to be told "the kitchen is closed". Doesn't mention anywhere on the menu and the waitress never told us - in fact once she clocked off clearly nobody took over our table as the plates never got cleared. Young lad behind the bar just said "sorry it's not my job, waitress should've told you". Supervisor was a little more apologetic and knocked a tenner off the bill but it really spoilt a rare night out for dinner - I wouldn't expect an 8pm booking to be too late for dessert! The ambience was so poor too - charging fairly expensive restaurant prices whilst instead of background music, we listened to the football on the TV. Must be difficult to strike the right balance these days to keep a pub going but we definitely wouldn't return, now seems a soulless overpriced pub with disinterested staff, and the empty tables in what used to be a packed restaurant showed this too

Staying close by so went with our 2 dogs. Very friendly place , we had fish and chips which was fantastic. Lovely people and very dog friendly.

Turned up without booking ( recommend to book ) Very busy but they still managed to fit us in. First of all the young waitress who served was so lovely and efficient, always on the go. We think her name was Hollie or Hallie. Food wonderful and brilliant service. Highly recommend

Thoroughly recommend the Sunday roast at The Ship. Generous portions and freshly cooked veg. The beef was beautifully tender.

We attended following a funeral (sadly) but the pub really did finish the day well. Staff were lovely & the food was fantastic. Thanks guys n gals.

Visited 1st March for a meal as new to the area. My wife had the advertised beef stew and dumplings which turned out to be chicken! Asked why and was told there was no beef stew. Complained that why she was not advised of this upon ordering otherwise she would have had something else. Thankfully it was wiped from the bill. We had the fish and chips two nights before which were excellent so we thought we'd try something different, myself having the vindalo chicken which was very good. In the two visits we would've spent around £100 including our drinks. Will visit again but will be wary when ordering food!

Called in here on the way back from York- fancied a good pub meal away from the city. This pub certainly lived up to that. Each of my family had different meals. All a decent size and tasted amazing. I had the chilli con carne and its the best I’ve had in a while. Will certainly be back!

Highly recommend The ship for Sunday dinner, great food, service and atmosphere. Will definitely be visiting again soon.

Food excellent,service not so good,booked a table,but was left waiting well over a hour for food,people who just walked in and people who ordered after us was served first,was left with finished courses on our table for over half an hour even tho staff asked if all ok then walked away,was left three quarters of an hour and no one came to take sweet order even though staff kept looking but would rather sit down and chat with freinds,what a let down,very very disappointed,the bar was often left unattended and staff was more interested with sitting with freinds and chatting.

Food good, had a vindaloo, friends had cottage pie, mushroom risotto and a ciabatta. No complaints from any of us. Big portions.

Gender reveal We hired part of this venue last week for my sons gender reveal. We asked Michelle who works there to set this venue up for us and she did not disappoint! It was exactly how I imagined it when planning and she pulled out all the stops. Definitely a vital part in the ship team. The food was amazing and presented to a top level! And thank you to Alice and Gina behind the bar putting up with us all night and cleaning up afterwards and finally thanks to Anthony for sorting all the details for the venue out. Wouldn’t hesitate to use the team again.

Had a lovely night with some friends ad the food was gorgeous, I had the chicken supreme and it was amazing. Definitely will be back for the lovely food 😊 the service and the staff were excellent 👌

Seventeen of us (a mix of adults and children) have just enjoyed a family meal here to celebrate a big birthday. The customer service was spot on from booking it up to us leaving after the meal. All of us were very impressed with the quality of the food and portion sizes of the meals too. The staff certainly helped the birthday lady and her family enjoy a special evening! Definitely recommended for group bookings.

11 of us went for a meal and we received a really friendly welcome. We were well looked after and the food was great.

Start off by saying how amazing the food and service is. However, the so called bar manager really ruined our experience and by the looks on others faces, theirs too. Stumbling round the pub extremely drunk walking up to tables saying that she is the bar manager is utterly unprofessional in my eyes. At one point she stumbled behind the bar nearly falling face first turning the volume of the music up to unbearable levels whilst people are eating. Luckily the bar staff actually working quickly corrected this by turning the music down. The young man working on the bar came up to us and profusely apologised and even offered to buy us a round of drinks to compensate for the unprofessional chaos. I can tell by the conversations other tables were having that this is a very common occurrence when it comes to the bar managers actions. I would like to thank the two young bar members working for their professionalism and resilience of the situation

We come to this lovely pub on a regular basis, lovely delicious food, staff are all very friendly,helpful efficient and accomaditing, especially when it comes to allergies and fussy eaters like myself. The staff always make the effort to make sure there customers are well looked after and are happy with everything. Great atmosphere in this pub and especially at special occasions such as Halloween and Christmas etc, they even make the effort by dressing up. Can highly recommend, this is the best pub in the village! 🙂

Absolutely amazing service and food as usual! Ship chips are our family favourite and are delicious! Team are very friendly. Special mention to Michelle who is amazing, always gives fabulous, personalised service, which is definitely what keeps us coming back!

We ordered a chicken burger and gammon with eggs. Both were beautifuly cooked and the chips were very tasty. Unfortunately didn't have any room for a dessert.

We were staying in this area and searched for dog friendly pub, this was top of the list and now we have visited it’s no surprise. So the pub itself could do with some TLC, however the food and service was brilliant and our dog soon made himself at home under the table. Highly recommended.

Never been here before, so having walked the dog on the common tried it on Saturday lunch time , having a mucky fog was no problem , they love dogs here, so we stopped to eat. Menu was varied in range and portion size , and when mine arrived I was pleased with the size of the fish too! Spoke to the landlord who had only recently taken over and expressed how pleased we were. I wish them every luck, and like me if you pass the place and wonder , just stop one day, I'm sure you will find it enjoyable.

Called in after a great walk on Strensall Common. Really friendly welcome from the staff. Excellent pint of Landlord and wholesome pub food. Dog friendly and comfortable surroundings.

Great sunday lunch. If we went again - sunday dinner (pork) is solid, brownie nothing special, hot drinks nothing special. Just go for the Sunday dinner and head out.

Very welcoming pub, great park outside and a bouncy castle for the kids in the summer months which is a bonus. Food was spot on as always and nice pint. Always call in when where staying at flaxton or beechwood and will be back next time where over

Nice pint of Tequila Blonde, I think it was. One of those pubs that does a lot of food , so a bit of a foody smell when we were in , later in the evening.
