My wife and I have found this café, (The Ship) a Church run café In Rainham Village. It's a very nice place to eat, and chat to friendly staff and other people, even though there are other reviews with regard to gossip. Today, ( lunchtime Friday the 8th September), after an excellent meal, and in front of a dozen witnesses, the peace was disrupted by a Mr Michael Pathan who was sitting at the first table next to the entrance door. He stood up behind one of the staff and started to shout, at the top of his voice, (for everyone to hear), at a lady who had just left and was on the pavement outside talking quietly thanking the staff member who had served her. He screamed, 'Why don't you F*** ***.' He was offered to step out into the street and repeat what he said, but he stayed behind the lady that works there. For the benefit of the staff and all the people that eat there. I hope that the management ban the man from the café, and the café Church website, where his photo is listed.

What a wonderful place! We stumbled across the ship on a walk between Harold Wood, and Purfleet! We had no idea that this was fundamentally a community café but we was made to feel so welcome! The place is managed and run by a wonderful group of people who give up their time to help the less fortunate! They were so accommodating, and the food was very good for such a cheap price! I left feeling very humble that there are still such genuinely nice people out there in the community. Doing such wonderful work. I look forward to going back soon!

I popped in there for brunch always a friendly face and welcome. They don't have a set price list, but give suggestions of what you could pay.

I find the staff chatty but you have to start conversation. The customers seem to all know eachother but seem to gossip and are not nice behind backs. Not a comfortable atmosphere. Felt very uneasy. Not likely to visit again

The Ship provides a wonderful service to the community. The food is always freshly cooked and home made. Everyone is made welcome and no pressure to hurry up. The staff are lovely and always make time for a kindly word and advice. Just like a trip back in time when there was a true sense of community.

I have been coming here on occasion for quite a few years and it has always been good with friendly and efficient service. A couple of years ago it changed philosophy so you pay what you can which i am not so keen on. Today I donated £7 for chicken with mash and veg and a mug of tea. The food was fine when it came but the place was so crowded that I had to wait more than 30 minutes plus they forgot my tea and the table was not clean. It is a bit of a shame that this place changed as before it was way better.

I have been coming here a couple of times a year for the last 5 years or so when visiting Rainham. This place is run by the local church as a non-profit cafe which has changed since I came last to a cafe where you pay what you can afford / what you think the food is worth. I have to be honest this does put me off a bit however my Father and I gave it a go again. The menu has become rather smaller so there is a choice of hot drinks, breakfast dishes and jacket potatoes as well as a main lunch dish (roast chicken and ham with roast potatoes and veg when we came) and home made desserts. The roast dinner was excellent (we only had chicken) and a large portion. For dessert we had a slice of homemade bakewell tart and custard - which was ok but not as good as my wifes. Including a pot of tea I left £20 as a donation which is probably about what we would pay locally to us for a similar meal. The staff are very friendly and not too too overtly religious. I would prefer set prices and a little more choice though. Also it was rather cold in the cafe to sit for long.
