The Ship in Thurrock

The ship pub has a special place in my heart! It is a family run pub with a very welcoming atmosphere. Every weekend there is unreal entertainment as well as mid week quizzes. The food is always outstanding and I honestly will not go anywhere else for a drink.

Had Sunday roast today. Service was appalling. We have eaten many times with a Sunday roast. Gone down hill massively. They had no chicken no pork only beef which was rare. The service was non existent and the food comes out in drift and drabs. Took so long for food to arrive and then the orders were wrong. The staff were awful with attitude. Overall terrible experience and won’t be eating a Sunday roast there again.

We cone here very often as we live locally, we booked a table of 5 bar staff friendly and polite. The restaurant was very disappointing this time usually there are three meat choices for Sunday lunch however today there was only beef we ordered extra sides and a child’s meal one of our side dishes arrived just as we finished our meal and the child’s meal arrived quite sone time after the adults meals. The beef was so tough I could cut or chew it and was too rare for my taste, the service was very poor no one checked ti see if everything was ok, we had to find someone to take our dessert order which took quite some time and one of the orders we received was wrong by the time it arrived the rest of us had finished. I had the cherry sundae could not eat it as the cherries were frozen. We waited so long for the bill in the end my partner had to leave our table and go to find someone he got to the bar and found four members of staff standing around chatting. Overall the service, food and attitude of staff was very poor and unexpectable although the ship is our local and we have had lunch there many times we will not be returning again for Sunday lunch.

Not very respectful to their neighbours !!! Closed off their car park for a 'party' so their customers parked where they liked....

What a disappointing Mother's Day Lunch.. The owners was rude when we arrived but the girls were lovely.. The beef you couldn't eat it was tough. The prawns in batter were greasy and tasted as if was cooked in old oil. so overall very unhappy..

I went here years ago and the food was rubbish. I went back and wow this pub is so much better, food was fantastic and the pub was clean modern and tidy. the bar staff were really friendly and couldn't do enough for us. Great choice of food and drinks and always doing deals on food and drinks too. Will 100% be back again

Probably the worst experience I've had in a public house A birthday drink with friends spoilt by someone who really must learn that the paying customer is king in this industry Accosted on entering and told that the birthday cake could not be eaten there as (I do deserts and you can buy them instead) Definitely not a place I will be returning to And as it's a managed house I will be complaining to the area manager Staff wonderful manager not so

Booked for 8 people on Mother's day arriving at 3.oclock, 6 of us had the 3 course set menu...after waiting an age for our starters these were just about passable, before our main course arrived people on the next table were complaining they had waited over 2 hours for theirs which was only luke warm, they eventually walked out after refusing the rest of their meals, this did not bode well for us, when our mains eventually turned up it all looked and tasted horrible, vegetables were not fresh, meat was tough, and a cauliflower cheese we had ordered did not arrive, we were though so hungry by this time we had to eat some of it but I have to say this was the worst Sunday roast I have ever had and all my family agreed. We complained and got told there were issues in the kitchen and they would re-adjust our bill, the best part were the desserts. Having read past reviews (which I should of read before I booked) you can see that there is serious problems with the quality of food, my advice..find new chefs/cooks and bring back the carvery, you know this would of been a busy day and it's unexceptable the length of time we had to wait for food, the management did not come and see us and we felt sorry for the young waitresses that kept apologising, I appreciate pubs are having staffing issues but you shouldn't book so many in if the kitchen can't cope. We will not be returning which is a shame as the pub is in the area we live and wanted to support them...

Friday lunchtime visit with my wife to meet a friend who had suggested this pub as our meeting point. First impression excellent - greeted by two smiling barmaids, helpful and chatty. Excellent variety of beers and Gins with recommendations provided by the barmaids. Good choice of tables in bar and quiet areas. BBC news and sky sports on the many TVs. Food was tasty, decent quality and reasonably priced. Curry very nice. Toilets clean and tidy Baffled to see there were a number of 1* reviews when I went to write this.

I live local and have used this pub many times but not recently because of covid and working hours,what on earth has happened to it? The bar staff are miserable, rude , and clearly don't want to be there ,the landlady is obnoxious and obviously this is mirrored in her staff. I ordered a G&T and got sodawater when I asked for the drink I ordered I was virtually called a liar,a group of us sat in the bar area and were served desserts clearly not ours just dumped on our table when the waitress was told she just scooped them away without an apology or a smile terrible. We moved on to the traitors gate ,what a difference lovely bar staff out to please really nice atmosphere. So being a local the ship is not mine ,avoid!

What a terrible shame, used to be such a lovely friendly local pub, it has really gone downhill. Absolutely awful landlady, so unwelcoming and very hostile. Overall staff very unfriendly. I ate here last night with people from work all was ok till dessert came out which was a crumble thing that was stodgy and dry.. I asked could I change it... The waitress went and spoke to the manager who said only if I pay again for it... I've worked in hospitality most of my life and I would never do that to a customer I'm sure you won't go broke over one dessert and the manager should have come out to deal with this I eat out at many local places and would never get this treatment will not be back

Just to say I wouldn’t eat here ever again ! Food took ages to come out to tables some people had finished eating by the time others got there food and every table had cold food delivered And was sent back several times Deposits were not taken off the bill after ensuring we paid it ! Was told that my deposit would be returned to me in 7/10 days ? why not instantly ? Very poor avoid the restaurant at all cost

Really nice pub, plenty of parking, good choice on food menu with reasonable prices, food was really nice as well Staff are friendly and the garden at the back is perfect on a sunny day

Had the pleasure of going to the Ship last week and was really impressed with the facility’s and service. Large canopy with 4 heaters, cushions to sit on, blankets to keep you warm. Food was good also. Will definitely be going back

Decided to go to the Ship Pub in Dock Road Grays to celebrate our 46th Wedding Anniversary with a drinks and lunch. The table was booked for 5 hours 12.00 - 5.00 to allow our family to join us later after their days work. At approximately 3.50 my husband was asked if he would pay the tab, to which he replied no because we had other people joining us. Approximately 4.15 the waitress came back and insisted the tab was paid. When asked why he had to pay out an hour before the table was being vacated we were informed it was because of "Walkouts" by other people. We feel most insulted by the fact that an accusation was being made that we may fall into that category. We are of older years and were trying to enjoy a relaxing afternoon with our two young grandsons. The landlady then got involved and was extremely rude to us and never believed that any of her bar staff would have come out and insisted we paid the tab up early and accusing us of lying. A real pleasant occasion clearly spoilt. Go their at your peril and beware they don't give a hoot about people just want to grab your money.

I’ve sent back as many pints as I’ve drank in here which is a shame. It has potential as a good pub but some things let it down. Staff are pretty good at adhering to Covid rules though.

The landlady of this pub is extremely rude. The food is typical frozen pub grub. The worst pub so far for COVID rules. My friends and I will not be returning. If you want to have fun and a laugh, this isn’t the place for you.

Ok where do I start we had a table granted starters ok. Cutlery came after...then the roast beef came . Wish I'd taken a photo was bone grey to the point of the beef having dry hairs...previously before that wed ordered waitress askif we wanted cauliflower cheese not once was also on the plate already. So manager was u unavailble as earing her dinner. Arrives and we say to her rhis was awful the beef is so dry we cant even cut it properly...(pitched the frtness hairs on it) she then got aggy with us and said well I've just managed to eat it( proceeded to be rude took plates away offer us a discount that turned out to be false as we all had 2 courts for 13.99 etc so she out it through time till as seperate starter and main. Do basically we were done out of 7 pounds aswell. As she s Left the kitchen she mentioned the discount in passing.. working in hospitality myself and pubs I thought the whole experience was a disgrace. Good luck staying busy as it the worse roast we have ever had and the worst customer service which I will share with my hospitality colleagues.

Me and my family (family of 4) came down on a Wednesday evening for dinner to try and make use of the Eat In to Help Out scheme going on. We all really wish we stayed in now! The service all night was terribly slow, when we got seated at the beginning of the evening, we didn’t get our drinks for a good 15/20mins. After ordering our food, the starters took around 40mins to get out to us and even though that food was good, it shouldn’t take that long for 4 starters. We then struggled to get any service to take away our empty plates and to try and get another round of drinks in. We tried to get the attention of staff but with no luck. When we did finally get to order some more drinks, the empty plates still weren’t taken away from the table. Once the empties were taken, we then had to remind a 2nd staff member to get some more drinks as the first staff member seemed to have forgotten we wanted more drinks. Then the main courses arrived about 25/30mins later. My family all got their meals out, but my order was wrong. They said they would take it back and get the correct order working. A side order had also been missed which we had to ask for to get. My brother had asked for a Medium Well Steak which came out pretty cremated, dry and very very well done. Literally my whole family had finished their dinner and twice I had a staff member come over and say that my meal wouldn’t be long. It was. They then bought out the side order that was missed, I ended up having that for some food as my main was still missing. Another 15/20mins went by with everyone finished and the side finished that my main eventually came out. Honestly by that time, I was last the point of being hungry and only ate what I could of it due to the fact I waited so long. My family felt awkward as they all just had to sit there with empty plates watching me forcefully eat my dinner. We were there for just over 2 hours and only had starters, mains and 2 drinks. 1 meal wrong, 1 side order missed, 1 meal cooked incorrectly and having to chase staff for a bit of service - diabolical.

Absolutely a shambles. Never been in a pub and seen so many people wait ages for their food and I the end cancel their food. Think the chef was cooking on a campaign stove. 😢😢😢

Nicely done up pub. Rather lively!! Does some nice real ales. Nice seating areas. Menu is standard pub grub at normal prices

The ship has been nicely redecorated but the food has deteriorated. It use to be a Carvery which was pretty good but this family visit was not good at all unfortunately. We all had a roast chicken dinner and the meat was dry and tasteless, my grandson had a child's pasta which came up as dry pasta with no sauce (we had to ask for some). None of our party enjoyed the food they all said it was bland and dry. My parents in law are in their eightees hence we didn't make a fuss we just won't be returning or recommending to anyone else. Such a shame.

Came down here last night as wanted to see Kat Price as not seen her for a long time. Kat was outstanding as always but unfortunately we felt really uncomfortable for majority of the evening as the atmosphere was very strange like trouble was constantly brewing. A fight kicked off outside around 8.15 PM with two fellas and then one of them were allowed back in the pub which I felt really was strange. Has really put me off attending here in the evening now. Maybe doormen should be brought in like the Traitors and The Bull. Shame because the pub has been refurbished lovely with really nice bar staff but with such tense atmosphere I doubt we will return anytime soon.

Sunday evening dinner. Worth it and tasty. Got there around 5pm and the front bar was busy, which was reassuring. The restaurant area had about 4 tables taken. Ordered 2 roasts with beef, plus a side of cauliflower cheese. Food took about 15mins and came out hot and a big serving for less than £10 each. Plenty of tasty gravy and the beef was just as good and not out of a packet. The side portion of cauliflower cheese was a large portion and piping hot!Would certainly go back again.

Went to The Ship to have lunch for my husbands birthday, was very impressed as it was the first visit since the re-furbishment. Meal was very nice, staff were very helpful and pleasant, lovely new decor.

We all had lunch today from the set menu and it was lovely. Well cooked abd very tasty. The two bar staff that were working were great, really pleasant and helpful. Will definitely return

Average lunch meal. I had the chicken kiev breast. Unfortunately, there was no garlic sauce within the chicken breast (which was overcooked).. Disappointing. Bar staff were very friendly and helpful. Manager was also very friendly. However, the pub has been completely re-vamped and it looks lovely

We had had a long day and knew that The Ship had reopened so decided to pop in for dinner ; we weren’t disappointed the decor was wonderful and the food was perfect, good sized portions and a warm and friendly service, the bar maid and chef were very polite and pleasant and we will definitely be returning

11 of us went for lunch and were sat at 3 tables, each with a different number and told to all order under one number! This apparently caused the following problems. Service a disgrace. Some mains arrived before starters. Food varied in edibility and hotness, mixed orders, bits missing. Then given a card for £10 off next meal per table??? Majority of us are not returning.

Just returned from The Ship for Sunday Lunch. Firstly we were shown to our table and we were told what meats were available for Sunday Lunch then was left at our table. We were told to go to the bar to order our food. That would off been ok but we didn’t have Menus. After locating a menu I went to the bar and ordered Roast Pork and Roast Gammon. I asked for a side dish of Stuffing balls and were told there wasn’t any. So I asked for Pickled Cabbage and the member of staff said that the meal comes with that so I ordered Cauliflower Cheese. Then I went to order a bottle of Hardy’s Chardonnay the member of staff asked me to look into the drinks cooler to see if I could see the bottle. Not Professional. After 45 minutes our food arrived. Luke warm. The Gammon was extremely salty and the mash was like “Smash”. My husband left most off his food. The people on the next table sent their food back. I asked for Mint sauce this never materialised. Will never return for Sunday Lunch. Better when it was a carvery.

I visited this pub for lunch on Wednesday 21st August 2019 with some disabled friends. We arrived by disability transport at 12.30 and was told there was a 30 minute wait which was fine. We drove passed on our way to The Bull, one of favourite drinking establishments and noticed The Ship had reopened, so we popped in for a drink on the way back to see what's new, and we were not disappointed, an amazing transformation, lovely comfortable booths, beautifully decorated, great atmosphere, I think its goodbye "Bull" hello "Ship". One of Grays best kept secrets.

We used to visit the Ship often on Sundays as their carvery was excellent, so looking forward to visiting once it had reopened.

As the title says “under new management, and as such there will be teething problems, however, we never found that, it really was a wonderful meal and the service was excellent, congratulations to the new management and see you soon when we visit our daughter.

Visited this for a family lunch on hearing it had recently reopened after refurbishment. We should not have bothered!

Ordered food and drinks for a family meal. Collected drinks and was informed of a half an hour wait time as the food inspector was in. After an hour wait we enquired about the delay and why we hadn’t received our food. The hostess went into the kitchen and promptly returned with our food which tells me the food was ready and had just not been brought out. When we finally received our food, it was not up to standards as certain dishes ordered were missing ingredients and others were just over cooked. Instead of returning the food my party left disappointed. I would not return to this restaurant or recommend it.

Couldn't be bothered to cook today so we popped round to the newly reopened Ship pub for lunch. We both had roast dinners, 1 beef and 1 lamb which were really nice, plenty of meat, 2 yorky puds, 4 different veg and 2 types of potatoes that filled us up (both served on warm plates which to me is a must), very friendly staff and great service. If you've not tried it yet give it a go, we'll certainly be going back 10/10

We visited the Ship on Thursday evening for an early meal. Drinks were ordered, food was ordered, then the long wait for our 2 simple meals ( pie and chips and hamburger and chips ) not to difficult to cook. 45 minutes later I had to ask if there was a problem with our order and why the delay, we were told they were being played up and would be out soon ! 10 minutes later they arrived. My question is why did it take do long to prepare 2 pub meals when the place was not at all busy? Sorry to say I won't be returning to this venue.

Under new management and currently under refurbishment hope to see you early July, this will be a family run pub who are local to the area, all day food and a Sunday menu will be available, TVs live sport will be shown, live bands, discos and karaoke and various other entertainment will be provided, hope to see everyone very soon. Had Sunday lunch here for my uncles birthday was a good Sunday roast. Quite a small pub/restaurant, however, is great for events such as birthdays. The place gets busy and there is not a lot of parking around, apart from that it was a good time out :)

Si buscas un buen aspecto local domingo almuerzo no busques más. Limpio y agradable, como un Toby recogida tu carne luego pila todo en su plato y volver por más verduras. Es mejor si reserva una mesa antes de ir como pud muy popular para comer.

Basic food but always nice, carvery is lovely and very reasonably priced. Bar service was quite good as well, needs a bit of new decor in the dining area maybe.

Otros y yo pasamos a última hora visita a el barco en el muelle de la carretera poco Thurrock para celebrar el día de la calle patricio con algunos de nuestros amigos cercanos de la familia y nuestros maridos. Una banda de rock brillante jugó fantásticamente y tenía todo y baile, que fue una gran sorpresa para nosotros y muy agradable! Tenía un ambiente encantador y estaba sin ningún problema. (fue una lástima para salir y ver gente peleando fuera del pub al lado) nos sirvieron las bebidas en el bar toda la noche por dos pequeños casos que eran muy serviciales y educados. Sin embargo, la señora mayor detrás del bar era muy grosero y poco acogedora. Al principio nos colectivamente asumido que sólo miserable, hasta que, ella comenzó a saltos y baile en el pub y el bar a la banda de rock, y bailando con el guitarrista de plomo. Cuando ordene nuestras bebidas en el bar llegó a todos la atención de nuestro partido que ella estaría también a menudo se da una de las más jóvenes chicas sucias parece cuando su vuelta estaba encendida y desprecio a ella. También fuimos testigos de su ignorando las consultas de jóvenes y a través de casos la duración de la noche, este espíritu joven casos muy claramente fue baja! Lo que fue un triste espectáculo para observar! Notando que este dijo que era un honor para el pub y la suerte de que ella, y nos trajo una copa. Tengo la intención de hacer una queja formal contra esta camarera como creo yo y sentir a alguien a su edad debería saber mejor francamente!

Estaba un poco preocupado por este buen oído no como comida pero era bonita, carnes y caliente. El chef era amable y servicial, pero no era genial que él tenía que hacer todos los que sirven en su propio así como reponer los lados. Las camareras eran muy agradables y serviciales. Es un lugar que no es mejor de lo que parece.

Mi esposa y yo fuimos allí para comida que no habíamos reservado, el restaurante estaba lleno a la mitad me dijeron lo siento no son más reservas, era 5. 30:00h!! Todo lo que queríamos era una comida rápida en el camino a casa desde el trabajo, la atención al cliente no existe aquí.

Had our Christmas party in the carvery on Friday 23 December but now been told after the event that we were too rowdy, what do you expect from 41 builders, they knew this in advance as we have been there 9 times in the last 10 years. I put over £2,000.00 over their bar and not once did they have the decency to tell me or anyone else we were too rowdy and I was stone cold sober. They said there was food on the floor but some of that was there before we even arrived. They said we left a mess, but I cleared up all the paper off the floor and put it in my own black sack even though the staff that were working at the end told me not too as it was the cleaners job in the morning. well if that's their attitude we certainly won't be back and will give our money to another venue with better customer service.

This establishments Carvery was average with burnt spuds and very little veg on offer, what made it even worse was the fact that the beef, turkey and gammon was carved using the same utensils, school boy error

Una grupo de veinte almorzamos en el barco y todos estábamos alimentados con comidas de nuestra elección en poco más de una hora. Todos estábamos satisfechos con el servicio que nos dieron y la amabilidad de la dueña en realizar mesas para nosotros. El personal era muy amable y se desvivía para asegurarse que todo el mundo estaba bien cuidado.

After booking a table for two and being told "that should be ok" the alarm bells should have rang. Table booked for 4pm on Sunday ( 23rd Oct) we arrived at 3.50pm to be told that our table still had people on it and they would hurry them up. We went to the bar for a drink and had to wait for ages as they served their regulars first. The only white wine they had was Pinot which was so awful my sister couldn't drink it.went back into the 'restaurant ' at 4.15 to be told oh yes this your table,it was right next to the carvery and hardly any room to move. When I asked if this was the only table they had she replied that yes it was because they had lots of double bookings !!!!! How unprofessional and down right rude. The reason I book a table is to be gaurenteed a booking and to have secured a decent table. I met some friends in the bar who had had the same problem with their booking ( they had booked days before but the booking in the system was for a week ahead! ) as there were 9 of them they decided to wait until a table could be cleaned for them. Awful customer service. And looking at the carvery it didn't look to healthy, the beef was a bit grey. Avoid at all costs.

My wife and I ate here recently and had the Sunday Carvery and were quite surprised as the quality of the food was quite good. The staff are very help, Dawn - our server was very efficient and helped us with setting, drinks, and how to queue - thank you Dawn!Will go again!

I have been a regular diner here for a few years on a Thursday evening for the excellent value carvery meal. The food quality has always been good and I have always known the staff to be very friendly. The selection of 4 quality real ales is a revelation, I have never had a bad pint. We will be back!

10 of us arrived for cousins birthday. Table booked with a deposit. Table ok but for those with back to wall had to get people to push in to let us get past. We had been drinking in the beer garden - which is not too bad - and just brought our drinks through. Once we were seated we got asked if we wanted any more drinks and kept getting checked on during the meal. The carvery was nice. All meats good and nice size slices. Had a good selection of veg - and all well cooked - and unlike the one we visited in the north you can keep going up for veg.once we finished had dessert. Cheescake was ok and the girls liked their sundaes. We were splitting the bill and the girls all managed to keep track of who had paid for what so had no problems at the end.We have been before but years ago. Wife said much better all round. I felt the food was good and service OK. Just to note that it was a boiling hot day and it was too hot inside so they have no a/c. In the UK probably only have to worry about that twice a year but worth noting if you have small ones as my daughter was getting fidgety until the ice cream came out.For 4 of us it was about £45 and then had drinks.

I met a friend at the Ship last Thursday for the lunchtime carvery/over 50's price of £5.50, bargain !It does get very busy when they first open the restaurant at midday, as everyone seems to go in at that time, the staff are then trying to serve everyone at the same time drinks and there is a queue at the buffet.Great food, and you can go up again for everything apart from more meat. The carvery server is a friendly chap.It is a nice relaxed atmosphere.I do feel that the waiter service could be improved upon slightly as I found it a little difficult trying to flag down staff to get a drink a couple of times. Im aware that I could have walked to the bar but didnt want to interrupt eating ! the 2 staff were running around serving drinks or deserts but caught them eventually.More staff did appear toward the end of our meal but by this time we were ready to leave.Overall I would visit again but would arrive a little later after the initial rush and queue has gone down.

Went for lunch, sadly on a sunday the only do roast. Not a problem we were gonna stop for a drink whilst are friend fed her 7 week old girl. They dont take card for drink orders! Only cash back and for that it would cost £1.50.We left it and went to the garden whilst the little one was fed. We were then asked to leave as we were not paying customers. Even the baby feeding was not enough for the manager to have a heart. We left, posted our view. The ship are so customer friendly they then wanted to get in a row over facebook. Shocking! Cold hearted pub...so not go there!

We have been to this restaurant on several occasions and have always been satisfied with the service and the quality of the food served. I good place for a good plain carvery dinner, no frills.

We visited on the 12th april 16 at approx 6pm big mistake . This pub restaurant used to have an inviting atmosphere and good food . we were a party os 3 service was minimal as in the lady took order bought drinks and bought food to table we even had to look for them to ask for bill . The food was bad the salmon at best was very dry the veg slimy my friends burger was ok the mixed grill was vile chicken greasy sausage split and burnt and i cant exsplain how bad all the chips were . We have voted with our feet meaning we will never go back and would advise all not to bother im assured carvery there is still good , We was not asked how the meal was and didnt exspect to be asked . very disapointing

Lovely looking pub in fab location, plenty of car parking. However the lists of dos and donuts before you enter the building can be off putting. Thought we would give it a try, nice little garden for small children and patio area. On ordering, the older lady was miserable, not very welcoming at all. Atmosphere very strange and unfortunately not warm at all. I got the impression it was more of a local pub. Children's chips were OK, however Sunday lunch was bland and certainly not worth another visit. Overall disappointed and felt we had wasted money.Upside is it might be nice having a drink in the summer in the garden (rather than inside) and it is a short walk to coal house fort.

Had a table for 11 booked for a Saturday evening. Booking over the phone was easy. Parking onsite is good, but could do with flood lighting at night.Waitress service was very good, attentive, courteous and friendly. The range of dishes was good, but their website is a little out of date and so some of our party came with the intention of eating something off the website menu only to find it had changed, but were delighted with the "specials" for the night. Food arrived in a timely manner and was hot. Prices are very reasonable, and we wish them well for the future.

Great food , fab service, good old English Grub, people are friendly went for xmas dinner and I was so happy I'll be back real soon.

Ate with family on a Thursday evening. Excellent quality food served by friendly and efficient staff. Restaurant was busy with most diners enjoying a varied carvery at special offer Thursday over 50s rate. Brill value. Have dined here before and will be back when next back in the area.

Despite being local this is the first visit to the pub. The meal was fantastic. A selection of freshly carved meat and as much veg that you can eat. The staff were friendly and very helpful. Always good to find somewhere good to eat.
