The Ship in Central Bedfordshire

Although not gourmet dining the food at The Ship is always good quality, comforting and hearty. The staff are always pleasant and attentive, everything is reasonably priced. There’s a reason we go so often! I’ve only bumped a star off of the food because my wife is a vegetarian and there’s not heaps of choice, although I can confirm the halo burger is divine.

Best carvery we've had, beef was so tender and great variety of veg. Roasties also nice and crispy! the chef was so friendly and helpful (I think he said his name was Charlie) the waitress (i didnt catch her name) was also really lovely, will definitely be returning

What a difference a year makes, not a great experience then but today was lovely. Fantastic service especially from chef Charlie. Really positive and enthusiastic to us all as he carved and talked us through the selection. Great to have this back to where it was as the ship is legendary for a Sunday afternoon feed up. Leaving with full stomachs and knowing to get back soon. Thank you all, and Charlie.

Lovely pub, friendly staff, good selection of drinks and fantastic food! Only down side.... ladies toilets seemed to have quite a lingering smell which didn't disappear during the evening

A gem of a local with friendly and welcoming staff and a great maritime theme throughout - thoughtful and interesting decor with so much to look at. We came for the Sunday carvery which was exceptional value for money and excellent quality. Fresh colourful vegetables, flavour-packed meats (5 to choose from - I went for the beef and pork belly - incredible!) and my sis had a delicious individual vegetarian wellington, cooked to order. Carveries can very hit and miss but you will not be disappointed eating here 👌

We initially popped in for a menu check and to register for the loyalty card. It's ten years since visiting before so we thought it's about time! The staff were really friendly and the smell of food was too good to resist so.... Lunch was asked for! Service, food and drinks were really good, I marked the atmosphere down to 4 stars, purely because there were two different background music sets being played simultaneously! We liked both but couldn't decide which one to sing (eat?) along to. At one point we had Bob Marley and KT Tunstall mixing up the music vibes! We'd highly recommend this pub as it's reasonably priced (£35 for two people, two courses and two drinks). We'll definitely be coming back again soon.

Main meals and starters were good but desserts were tiny and not as good as suggested by the menu. Service was slow.

First time going for 3 adults and 1 child. The steak was enjoyed plus the burgers. I had the carvery. I was disappointed in my carvery, not a big selection of veg. The Meat was ok, beef a little dry. Nice roast potatoes and cauliflowers cheese and gravy. Yorkshire puddings although massive were hard and dry unfortunately. The carrots and parsnips looked and tasted like they had been reheated. The staff seemed all friendly enough. If we were to go back I would pick a different dish from the menu. Drinks were quick to be served. Food was a little wait. Large car park, I would imagine it can get full when busy, I only saw one disabled space in the car park. Ladies toilets were clean. We did pass a disabled toilet near the car park entrance to the pub..

Love it here, food is scrummy, service is 100% always. Never had any reason to complain about anything….would totally recommend The Ship ….hope you enjoy it like we do, we go quite a lot, love the Sunday Carvery….enjoy

A lovely experience. Our group thoroughly enjoyed its experience at the pub. The staff were terrific. Loved the puns such as 'sea' you again.

Thoroughly enjoyable lunch at The Ship on 9th April. Between the four of us one had salmon, another had steak pie, another had fish and chips and I filled my plate at the carvery. Then one chose bread and butter pudding while the other three of us opted for the white chocolate roulade special, followed by coffee. We all enjoyed our lunches very much and definitely recommend you visit The Ship.

Went here today, had a carvery, was amazing! We absolutely loved it. The roast potatoes were really lovely, just how we like them - fluffy inside with loads of flavour. All of the food was lovely and the service was great. The servers were attentive but not overbearing; the chef was particularly awesome - very friendly and amiable. We've been here before but we're not locals, we come from 30 miles away, we do so because it's such a lovely pub, so friendly and the food is always amazing! Thanks guys for yet another wonderful visit, we'll be back!

I had a Sunday roast today that was quite disappointing. Given that I used to really enjoy The Ship inn, I feel like this has gone extremely downhill with the food! The cauliflower cheese was overcooked and brown, which really affected the taste and I used to love this and religiously have it from only the ship :( The Yorkshire puddings were rock solid and inedible. Overall, it was not the enjoyable meal I was hoping for. Would not recommend this place for a Sunday roast, the atmosphere used to be so busy with crazy turnovers for Sunday roast and yet the pub was really quiet…

We went on Mothers Day with a big party of us 13 people, the service was great and also the carvery was 10/10 everyone enjoyed themselves. Big thanks to Charlie the chef who was very helpful and the lady who was serving us ( Didn't catch her name ) Thanks again to all the staff at the Ship Inn for making this a great visit on such a special day. 10/10

Easy booking system, great friendly staff. The ship inn is stunning in decor which complimented the stunning afternoon tea we enjoyed. Well filled delicious choice of sandwiches, huge scones alongside cakes that I had to ask for a box to take some home for the next day. We were offered additional drinks from the bar which really made the occasion perfect. The food on the carvery looked amazing so definitely coming back. Good value for money also

My food was not as expected as I ordered the pasta carbonara vegetarian no pulled pork, it come with mixed vegetables and was tasteless but my husband food was lovely the staff didn't charge for my meal. It was a lovely place the staff were helpful and friendly and lovely

Out of three places we visited, this was by far the best. I had the carvery. Choice of 3 meats, turkey, gammon, and beef. Good choice of vegetables. The red cabbage was to die for The roast spuds were well cooked and crispy on the outside. Negatives the meat slices could have been a bit thicker. The London Pride didn't taste too good, but I wasn't sure if it was me or the beer. The staff were friendly and attentive, but not too much. Will definitely come back again.

Tried phoning for 3 days to book a table but there was never an answer. Had to book on line in the end. Went for their advertised 'pie Tuesday' where advert stated choice of pies but there was only one pie which was one i did not want. Two of the meats were also unavailable on their carvery so ended up having fish and chips which was not what I had wanted to go out to dinner for. Fish was ok but a bit dry and brown round the edges. The restaurant was so cold we had to eat with our coats on. There was a burnt out tea light on out table, obviously left from ;previous evening and not removed or replaced. We were advised to sign up for their new Diamond Club and we would get 20% off our bill, so we did, however we were not given the discount when it came to pay our bill. During our meal the kitchen door from the carvery was propped open and we were subjected to a huge amount of crashing and banging and having the music in the kitchen competing with the music in the restaurant, eventually had to ask waitress to ask then to close the door. Wanted cheesecake for dessert and that was also not availabe! all in all a very poor experience.

First time here after hearing good reviews. The customer service was excellent and Christian was a hard working host which really made a difference. The food was well priced with the main and desert going down well.will definitely return.

Nice place to eat with good food and service

Service was abit slow at points - waiting to know when to go up and collect carvery and getting menus for dessert but they did check on us twice (with mouthful of food) if everything was ok during the meal. The only real issue with the food was the roast potatoes were either very dry or cold. Otherwise it was really good.

Had a very nice carvery and the chef Charlie even made our dog her own tray of meat scraps which she loved! Would recommend to anyone who wants to come for a nice carvery and who wants to bring their Dog!

Pre booked for a Sunday lunch. Expected it to be busy as The Ship has a good reputation in the town. Service was very swift for a busy lunchtime. We all opted for the carvery. Very nice selection of well cooked food. It didn’t feel like it had been under the heaters for too long. All had puddings which were delicious and again service was very quick.

Bit of a mixed review as we’ve been several times on a Sunday and always rave about how good it is. Food, staff and selection is always great. But recently we booked as a table of 8 for a family birthday get together on a Tuesday. Again, the staff were great, made an effort laying the tables for a birthday but the disappointment was the “Tuesday Pie Night” that’s advertised as that’s what swung our decision to come here as a couple of the group wanted to try this. When we turned up at 6pm there was one ‘pie’ out which had no pasty at all left just filling. The veg selection was really in its last dregs a few boiled carrots left in the bottom of the pot, a couple of portions of cabbage, a few potatoes, plenty of red cabbage and leeks and plenty of parsnips. Before ordering I asked 2 of the waiting staff will the carvery be replenished at all as what was left wasn’t the most appealing looking and both assured me yes there would be some fresh bits going out. So 4 of us booked the unlimited pie/carvery option and 4 ordered off menu. Here I must be fair the food ordered from the menu, x2 pork belly, ribs and burger were all great and all plates were cleared with everyone super happy with their choices. The other 4 went up to the carvery to see it was still pretty much in the same way (potatoes had been topped up and a fresh cauliflower cheese). I asked the chef were they bringing out any fresh veg and was told no that’s all they had. I asked was there a fresh pie and was told ‘no just this one, but I guess it’s more of a casserole than a pie now as no pastry’. Disappointed we got our plates and got the standard carvery, here again I must be honest the meat was still tasty and generous in portion size, but the cold yorkshires that had been sat on a plate above the counter for a while and lack of veg choice was disappointing alongside the main factor of no pie. I am only writing this mixed review in the hopes management see and improve this on the weekdays as it was a let down. I’ll still recommend this place for a carvery but I would say only on a Sunday when it’s busy so it’s constantly restocked and fresh and if you go during the week to be safe order off the main menu.

Was our first time in there as we've recently moved to Leighton Buzzard and down the road from here . Charlotte and Honey were great and made us feel very welcome

I’m changing my 5 star review from before to a 2 star after a couple of years as I feel the food seems to have gone downhill a bit. Keeping the old photos here from my previous visit. The service was fantastic, the staff are friendly and I love the fresh modern interior when visiting but sadly, the food was not upto scratch. For the roast, meats were ok, but the potatoes were frozen out of the bag with no colour which was very disappointing. I’m almost certain we had proper ones before. The cauliflower cheese was rock solid as though it had been stuck straight in the warmer raw and not cooked. The cabbage in cheese sauce was absolutely horrid. Did not taste like that at all. It was a massive shame as I enjoyed this a lot last time. I feel this pub need to raise the bar again as quality has definitely slipped.

My new local 👍even though I live in Dunstable! My daughter moved to Leighton 3 weeks ago and I loved this pub immediately! It is soo cosy with a nautical theme ( obviously ) The food is amazing! The carvery (my fave) is the best! The staff are so friendly and chatty I really really love this pub 💞

This is potentially a little unfair, as our server did apologise for our experience The food was good, and the people here were all great. Not a bad selection of beers either with Meantime and Dark Star on tap. We were however all put into a back room with the noisiest group of families and it was loud, hot and annoying. It really took away from the overall experience.

The food has really gone downhill since we last visited, and sadly our Friday evening meal for four was microwaved and super dry. The prices are way too high for a microwaved meal so sadly won’t be returning

Made welcome as soon as we arrived. Staff were helpful, pleasant, friendly and made sure we were well looked after. We had the carvery and were served quickly. Decent sized portion of meat and the pie of the day ( Gammon ) was delicious. Thank you - we will back again very soon 😊

Nice food quick service not bad on price carvery and drink 20 quid can't really go wrong was tad cold but that might just be me toilets seem to be lacking but can't win them all

I’ve eaten here twice and on both occasions the food was fantastic. Lovely Sunday dinners and great fish and chips. Waitresses are very attentive and are an asset to the pub.

I had lunch here. Middle of the day and it was very quiet - the food was really good.

Was in the area and did a quick search for a pub meal and gave this place a go. The staff were friendly and great. The food was pretty good; we ordered some mains off the “Great British Menu” (Chicken Tikka Masala, Carbonara and the Pork Belly). Clean, nicely themed and comfortable English Pub. They have a dedicated car park.

We had a meal here tonight. It was excellent. We had a longish wait but it was very busy. It was well worth the wait. We will certainly go there again if we’re passing through on the canal and will recommend it to other boaters. The staff were friendly, welcoming and attentive. It was good value for money too.

I have given 1 star as I tried to book and was told they’ve been busy and can’t gaurentee carvery would be available. It’s not because they’ve been busy, they dont do enough food . Went elsewhere and had a lovely carvery of pink roast beef at 6:15. This is not the first time either. I had pre booked and they had no carvery left

The Ship serve huge portions! Food was well cooked and tasty and our server was very polite and helpful. A few options were missing from the advertised dishes, but we were offered acceptable alternatives so that worked for us. Nautical theme in the restaurant as you might expect from a pub called The Ship!

A family gathering today of 14 including two children. Sunday roast at its best. Good vegan options too. Good desert choices too Our waitress,Lilly, was so very efficient. Always a head of us and our needs. First class !! Well done Lilly. !

Disappointment 😞 We were thrilled to be able to get a table for 6 with no notice. We soon found out why the place was near empty. Within our table order we ordered two chicken caesar salads. When our food arrived the waitress warned to be careful because the plates were hot. (I assumed she meant the plates for the other food not the salads). Well yes you've guessed it the salad was served on very hot plates and the dressing in a very hot jug. I'm not one to complain (yes, really) so I thought I'd just try and eat it. I soon gave up on that idea as the lettuce was limp and browning. After walking around and being ignored by staff with a napkin enabling me to carry the hot plate in hand, i collared the guy on the carvery, who took it back to the kitchen. He returned shortly with my original limp warm salad tipped on a cold plate. (Oh well, like I said, I'm not one to complain) I said to the carvery guy that I'd also need another cold plate as there were two salads. He shuffled back into the kitchen and returned empty handed because the cook had refused because.... and get this...... it's supposed to be hot????? The chicken warm, yes, the lettuce, absolutely not, room temp dress, yep OK. With some embarrassment the guy handed me a plate from the carvery to transfer my hot salad onto myself. I'll say it again, I don't like to complain so felt a little embarrassed doing so.

This place is a disaster, two drinks and two carvery’s for over £50 is an absolute joke!! This carvery isn’t worth even a pound it’s minging the foods bland most time dry and looks like been sat there all day and nothing updated and the chef doesn’t seem happy to be there or to serve! Save your money and go else where as this is shambles!

Oh my goodness - a proper Sunday roast from a carvery at last - with everything home-cooked, fresh and nothing from a freezer! With a choice of 6 roast meats (I opted to have a slice each of 3), roast & mashed potatoes, carrots, parsnips, green veg medley, Yorkshire pudding, stuffing, sausage, red cabbage, creamed leeks, cauliflower cheese, gravies and sauces - really amazing value for money. The puddings were again, properly home-made & very generous portions - it fed me all day! Also great service - friendly and fast. Thank you to all at the Ship Inn

Stopped off for dinner after the canal festival Interior of pub decorated well in the line with the name of the pub. The service and quality of the food was outstanding. Even when the pub became extremely busier than expected the staff coped well and remained friendly and professional. Will definitely return again

Been here many times in the past and we've always had great food, excellent service and always feel welcome. Well done to all the staff a real gem in our town. Our most recent visit was for a table of 12 and we were very well looked after and food was amazing as always!

Ate here last night, It was quite quiet for a Saturday. The food was excellent can highly recommend the ribs ! Service was great and all reasonably priced.

Went for a meal expecting a Carvery, but have changed menus recently and carvery is only available on Sundays, the Al a Carte menu has loads of choices and food is of really good quality and freshly cooked with care. (Previous Carvery we had was not so good during the week, so maybe why the change) The staff are well trained, my Partner who is Vegan also had lovely menu choices as well.

We had our wedding meal here, with 25 guests, Christian and his team went out of their way to help plan the day, with extra special touches such as tablecloths and napkins, and the layout of the tables on the day- including one for our wedding cake. The whole day went without a hitch. Pre meal drinks were served and all our various food selections (Starters and Mains) from the menus were cooked to perfection and served in good time, and all hot. All our guests were very happy with the food and service, With the lovely setting in the conservatory room with access to the outside gardens it made our day special - A credit to the Ships team, would recommend. Thanks again to Christian and his superb team of waiting staff and chefs.

Had dinner here with my wife yesterday at 7.00pm. We were very impressed with the standard of food plus the young lady serving was pleasant, I would definitely recommend.

Awful, miserable atmosphere. We didn't order, walked out after 5 minutes

Food was just OK. Overcooked and dry. Service was ok until it got to 10pm where we pretty much told to settle up and leave. Items on menu were not available. Such a shame as this used to be a lovely place to eat. Sadly we won't be back.
