We went to the Shieling twice when we were staying in Poolewe. Firstly just for a snack and drink after a walk however ended up having soup and a sandwich which was very generous in portion size “he doesn’t do small “ the waitress said laughing. I had mushroom soup which was delicious and my partner had the Cullen Skink which she declared the best ever! As it was so good we booked to return with our friends for lunch on the Friday, we all had fish and chips or scampi all of which were really fresh and tasty. The staff are really helpful and friendly and service was great. I would definitely recommend the Shieling if you are in the area but booking ahead especially in high season and weekends are a must.

What a lovely little gem this is in Gairloch. Visited on Wednesday 21st Feb 24 with my two young boys (4 and 6) with husband in tow. Youngest was desperate for a beach day and upon arriving in Gairloch the heavens opened so decided to have lunch first in the hope it passed. The two ladies serving were so incredibly accommodating to my two boys and nothing was too much trouble. The food was delicious and well worth the money. Will be visiting again and 100% recommend.

Always book ahead to avoid disapointment, because it so popular with locals. 6 of us had a family lunch and it was perfect. The waitresses Jackie and Laura were so professional and friendly. My cullen skink soup was delicious. We love the food here. Thank you Donald and staff. Guaranteed a warm welcome every time. You have to book first as this place gets busy. Do not expect to walk in and get a table for meal without booking because it is popular. This restaurant is an asset to this area. The coffees and cakes are great too.

We went just for a snack. A party of four. We were told that it would be a 25 minute wait to be served but said we were prepared to wait. The restaurant was at this point quite empty. After quite a long wait we ordered drinks but at this point not allowed to order food. another long wait and we at last ordered our food. The food was, when it arrived was of a high quality but 45 minutes to get a bacon roll and a side of chips in an almost empty restaurant seems unacceptable. We will not be going back.

This is our ‘go to’ lunch spot whilst staying with friends in Ormiscaig. We’ve been many times before and always for the delicious Cullen Skink. Generous portions, plenty of smoky fish, creamy and tasty. It’s served with hot from the oven ciabatta rolls. We’ve never found the staff to be anything but friendly and welcoming. The owner, Don, was behind the bar and was chatty and friendly. This isn’t a fast food restaurant - everything is freshly cooked so you may have a little wait. However, you can always enjoy the stunning view until your meal is ready. See you next year Don and your team.

Visited twice with my husband in November'21, once for coffee & shortbread and again for lunch. Shortbread was made by Donald, the owner, and was delicious. Both times the warm welcome started at the front door with smiley staff. For our lunch visit I had Cullen Skink soup which was beautifully rich in flavour with plenty of fish! My husband had the Haggis, White Pudding and Roastie Stack all topped off with a pouched egg. When my husband broke the yolk on his egg he said "It was just like on Master Chef"- runny and delicious. We finished with two beautiful desserts and coffee in the comfort of the adjacent sitting area. We thoroughly recommend you try the Sheiling yourself. We will again that's for sure.

This is a favourite lunch spot for us when staying in nearby Ormiscaig. The restaurant is convenient for Gairloch and Strath, and near the Gairloch Museum and Gale Centre. We go there for their delicious Cullen Skink which is served in two sizes - large and not so large! Both are generous portions and served with freshly baked individual baguettes. The ratio of fish & potato to broth is about 70/30 - heavy on the fish which is what you want on a rainy, blustery day. Prices are extremely reasonable and portions are large. Go with an appetite.

We popped in here on a wet and windy day, it was quite late in the afternoon and the kitchen was just closing down, but the staff said we could have soup or sandwiches. Popped in here for a few drinks and possibly a meal or with a view to book a meal within days of not possible that day. We were met by a polite but very quiet girl and signed in for Covid tracing. We glanced the pumps and were seated at a coffee table and sofas she had just cleared for us. However she made no attempt to wipe it clean. We ordered our drinks when she came back we were told they don’t serve anything on draft. Cover the pumps with a tea towel then! So we perused the drinks menu just handed to us and ordered. She came back and told us that they had run out. She didn’t give us an alternative. We decided to come back another time… customers do understand about shortages etc but come on .. Staff training required.. The food looked lovely .. it was a shame.

We were very fortunate to be able to sit outside when having lunch at The Shieling as it was a beautiful day. The view over the loch to Skye is magnificent. The restaurant sits close to the Gairloch Museum which we had just visited. Family have been to the restaurant before and it came highly recommended, I can see why.It sits on the main road with great views across the water. There's a spacious car park and seating outside. Inside there's plenty of tables in a traditional setting. I imagine post-pandemic it's been difficult to get back into the swing of things, if that was the case it didn't show. The service was perfect. You're not going to get fast food turnaround on orders, but then you aren't going to get fast food quality food. The fact that things are cooked to order is explained and I can't say I felt we had to wait long at all.The menu offered a good selection and catered well for vegetarians. We were all very happy with our choices. I had the falafel burger, one of the best I have tried. So, location, service and food - perfect!

Went in on a Saturday lunchtime, on a whim as the coffee shop we intended to use was closed. Intention was to have coffee and cake but changed our minds when we saw what else was on offer. The food is second to none. I had the gammon steak and it was honestly the best I've tasted, and I'm 73 so I've plenty of experience. My wife is a veggie and usually not impressed with what's available but she enthused about her meal. A friend with us had the haddock and chips and was not disappointed. A pleasant view over the loch was a bonus. I found the service good and the staff friendly. Hope to return, but as we live on the south coast of England it my be a while.

Excellent food. We arrived on a busy lunchtime. The lovely waiting staff explained that we'd have to wait as there is only one chef. Having heard how good the food is here we decided to wait. I'm very glad we did! Everything we ordered was first class. The kids menu is extensive and very reasonable. Fresh food with something for every child. The adults menu was really good too. I saw another family who came in behind us, having had the same explanation as us, quickly becoming impatient and trying to get served before others who had been in before them. They left without eating. Their loss. If their review is the one star, they aren't being fair!

Starter of deep fried Brie wedges - fairly standard fare in pub lunch places but this chef put his own mark on it with a delicious chutney with Arran mustard and a lovely salad including rasps, orange, peppers, red onion and crispy salad leaves. Original and delicious. For main course I had a chicken burger with salad and chips. The salad was all in the bun which was not what I expected. It was a small piece of chicken and a lot of salad. Very tasty and probably a big enough portion for most people. The Gairngorm IPA I washed it all down with was lovely. Fresh and light - an ideal pint for lunchtime. We are back here after a year away and pleased that one of our favourite eating places -The Shieling - is still as good as it always has been. It is on the main road through Gairloch and has beautiful views out over the loch. Outside tables are there so on good days you can eat lunch with spectacular views. Food is excellent and there is a good choice. We wish they served dinner more frequently (it is only on Fridays and Saturdays) and last orders are at 7.45 which seems very early. That said, we love the place and would use it more if it was open on more evenings.

Many years of eating here and the setting is so beautiful and we’ve seen it in every weather imaginable. The food is delicious and Donald’s idea of a portion still is massive in our eyes! We have been for just coffee, lunch and dinner and enjoyed all visits. The Shieling isn’t open for food as often as it used to be so check the times.

Delighted by the atmosphere and the service provided, we stopped in for lunch and were greeted by warm and friendly staff. I had their smoked haddock and pea risotto which was hands down the best I had ever had. I was disappointed in myself that I couldn’t finish the whole portion! Will definitely be revisiting before we return down south!

Excellent restaurant with quality food and service will be hard to beat. Lovely setting with beautiful views. Eaten in here lots of times as I used to live in the same street, coffee and cake good as well. Well done Donald and team for a fantastic evening. Always a pleasure

After readings reviews on this site decided to take a trip here. We enter on a Saturday evening not long after opening at 6pm. The place was dead bar two couples. We asked if we could have a table for two and were promptly replied with do you have a reservation. We replied no. The waitress apologised and said sorry we are fully booked. I looked around at the many free tables and asked is it ok if we sit outside. The reply was no we only have one chef. Not very accommodating at all if you ask me! The restaurant was very quiet at this time and we could have been easily seated for a quick meal, even if it was outside. Clearly the Shieling didn't want our business or extra profit!

We recently stayed near Gairloch and had lunch outside this restaurant on a beautiful warm day - the food was excellent - dinner in the evening is only on a Friday and Saturday - but I would like to try on another occasion.

Steak night at the Shieling was amazing! The steaks were cooked to perfection, and the accompanying sauces were divine (we had garlic butter, red wine and blue cheese). Can’t recommend highly enough!

First I need to say how good the views are from out the restaurants window. Fantastic Cullen skink. They played great music in the restaurant too. Fabulous brownies. It was pretty cheap too. I loved the way how they put some fish tanks in the restaurant.

Just been to Gairloch for the day and popped into The Shieling for lunch. Had the tempura battered prawns ans sweet chilli dip for starters and battered haddock, salad and chips for main and both were lovely. The restaurant has a very good selection of starters and main courses, didn't have pudding so can't comment on that, with two menu options and varying prices. The view over the beach was gorgeous and the staff were very friendly, efficient and food was served quickly. Would totally recommend this restaurant for lunch.

Popped in here for a light lunch. Busy mid week and with a friendly atmosphere. Plenty of choice on the menu and the staff were helpful. Thank you Steph. We both had soup which was very hot and tasty. The tomato and pepper was a little bitter but very enjoyable. The chicken and veg had large chunks of chicken and lots of assorted vegetables. The accompanying bread rolls were freshly made and very good. We noticed other diners eating a variety of dishes from the menu. They all looked very pleasing and I heard no complaints from anyone. We will call here again.

I called to check whether we would be welcomed with our lovely Airedale terrier and was delighted that Donald said yes but...if she is not well behaved then I will ask you to leave. Clear instructions and terms and as I know my dog is better behaved than my friends I feared not the wrath of Donald. Upon entering we were awarded a well behaved dog card which means we can return at any time. We ate the fabulous seafood chowder with warm ciabatta bread and the best chips ( hot crispy and real potato) I have had since my mum stopped making them at home. The salmon salad was beautifully presented and tasty too. Good selection of beer and lager ...I didn’t ask about the wines.

We visited for breakfast after checking out of our holiday cottage on a Saturday morning. We brought our well behaved dog who was welcomed. The food was fantastic and the staff were lovely. Nice interior which was spotlessly clean and a great sea view. I would recommend this place to anyone!

It’s a bit like a house that someone knocked the walls out to make a pub/lounge/restaurant combo sort of thing, without being one or the other.

A really good anniversary lunch worth travelling for. The restaurant has a great outlook and the attached café is so comfortable with leather sofas and a mesmerising fish tank. Fine food, good service and a reasonable price.

We visit the Larder each summer on our west coast trips. We opted for two savoury and two sweet pies to takeaway. One smoked haddock and cheese sauce, one chicken and haggis with sauce, one peach and apricot and one apple and blackcurrant. The smoked haddock pie was amazing, the best ever. The pastry was lovely too. I’ll definitely keep my eye out for this tasty pie on future visits. The chicken and haggis pie was lovely too, both pies moist and packed with filling, great sauces in them. I’m not keen on sweet pies but we enjoyed them too. The peach and apricot pie was perfect for me. Price wise the savoury pies are about right for the weight. No shortage of fish and meat in them.

A star on the north coast and a must visit. Gorgeous views over the Kyle from the outside seating. Family run with great service and great chat, the food was fantastic. We had lunch and had to add the sundae to celebrate the sunny day.

We know the Tongue area very well, and like to eat locally, so it was obvious we would decide to eat at the Craggan, and i'm happy we did! The restaurant area is welcoming and clean, staff friendly, and the car park was easy even with a big van. The only problem was choosing from the menu! So many tasty things - i wish we had more time to visit again.. All three of us enjoyed our food, and we shared everything so i know it was all delicious. Thank you for making a rather wet evening so special..

Dirty tables. Dirty menus. My daughter was served a mouldy panini. Cheese in panini was plastic. Very dry tasteless cheese scone. Drinks not too bad.

It was such a pleasure to visit this cafe and a welcome contrast to the pre-paid accommodation ran by some racketeer at Ivy Cottage. We took one look at what was on offer and fled to next ferry to Mallaig. I went to school in Inverie in 1948- 49. when the priest had an affair with our teacher. He wnt on to become bishop of the Westrn Isles while she became an un-married mother
