Surprised at how busy pub was for a Thursday evening. Great atmosphere, very chilled but efficient and friendly service. Food was perfect...Good pub hearty pub food that was yummy.

Decided last minute to try The Shepherd and 🐕 for Saturday lunch. The pub is a favourite place for biker's to meet up and compare bikes, although we weren't aware of this before visiting. There was about 50 biker's there when we arrived, all of them were polite and friendly, so don't let them put you off visiting here. We had lunch in the garden, which is pleasant to sit in, I had calfs liver 😋, and she who must be obeyed had minted lamb pudding. Both meals were lovely. Service was excellent 👌 Will definitely return

My wife and I went for the Sunday roast, I had the pork, and my wife had the roast beef. Both were really nice, with a nice yorkshire pudding served on the side. There was a very good selection of beers on offer, from real Ales to lagers, and prices were reasonable. I would certainly recommend this place for food as it's clean, tidy, good service, and reasonably priced. What's not to like!!

Sunday lunch. Lovely roast, plenty of meat, crispy roasties, big yorkie and a nice vegetable medley. Friendly staff as always.

Just had to post that we had the best ever, pub bought, cod & chips here. The chef's own batter is amazing & the cod was perfectly cooked.

Very welcoming pub, lady behind bar was very helpful and the food, delicious, also very attentive and asked if everything was ok a couple of times. Didn’t have a lot of deserts due to Father’s Day but went out they way to make us something else.

Great atmosphere. We attend their monthly open mic music events on the second Tuesdays of the month. Good selection of beers, ales and spirits as well as tea and coffee👍. There is a restaurant in the pub too for those who want to eat.

This has got to be the best fish & chips ever !.....wish I'd taken a photo but hence too busy enjoying it ( 2 empty plates would'vebeen a great shot).....Great friendly service, lovely pub/staff, and great to look at motorbikes outside,fond memories, def going back .

I've been here 3 times over the last few months for Sunday lunch, every time it has been lovely. Plenty of meat, nice seasoned veg and hot. I have recommended to family and friends who have also been and enjoyed it.

Went here for a roast dinner with friends, the roast was really top notch, generous amount of meat and perfectly seasoned veg. I'm fussy about my roast but I have to say it was really good.

Lovely place to be, open mic night, plenty of musicians and people who want to be there, great atmosphere first Tuesday of every month well worth a visit some good talent 😀

If you’re vegan, ask for a vegetable Thai curry. They have nothing specifically vegan on the menu but they whipped this up for me and it was immense! Honestly one of the best Thai curries I’ve ever had. The staff were lovely and accommodating and the atmosphere was perfect. What a lovely lunch. 😊

Came for Sunday lunch and this is all they do on a Sunday so you think it would be good 👍 well far from it absolutely awful. We had ordered lamb that was wafer thin and at £17.00 and rest had chicken and vegetarian each plate had 3 small roast potatoes we asked for more and was told we can’t, then we got two small bawls, then the veg came out one large bowl between us this was stone cold! And when we told the waitress her reply was are you sure ? the bowl was hot ! Really… Absolutely rubbish! don’t bother

Probably the best food I've had this year, if not in the last five years, really phenomenal, and the staff are fantastic to boot!

My wife and I are regulars at the Shepherd & Dog for an afternoon drink and chat with staff and other regulars. Whilst there recently, we looked at the menu. The daily specials were so tempting that we decided to stay for an early dinner. I chose the ribeye steak and my wife chose the wild seabass with boulangere potatoes. The steak was the best I've had in a while - tender, flavoursome and perfectly cooked to my taste The seabass was also really good - a generous fillet with crispy skin, sitting on a bed of soft, beautifully seasoned potato and onion. Recommended.

Found a decent eatery around this area at last. Lovely olde English pub with great food and atmosphere, set in a picturesque location by a golf course. Our first time at this pub and it didn't disappoint. Has entertainment too some nights. Will be going again.

We moved into the Hockley area just over a year ago and wasn't impressed at all with the local pub eateries, I found the Shepherd and dog on Google maps and decided to give it a try. At last, we found a good pub! Ales and food was excellent, pub is welcoming and cosy with tudor beams everywhere. Pub is set out in the countryside with lovely surroundings. Looking forward to visiting again and seeing the live music 👍🏻

Went for lunch, service unfriendly, food poor, would not recommend to anyone and will not be returning. Also for a pub claiming to have wide selection of real ales surprisingly short on selections.

Haven't visited for some time. The menu has expanded considerably. This pub always had great pies and excellent grilled skate. The size of the new menu rang alarm bells. I made the mistake of trying the Chicken Caesar salad. Agricultural chunks of chicken, lettuce not properly shredded, no anchovies, and croutons like soggy cubes of sponge soaked in tepid oil. Shame! Won't be returning.

First visit. Friendly welcome, good food and good service. Well worth a visit.

Very limited menu. We ordered the very strange baguettes which is the same meat they serve with the roast in a. Baguette with butter, side of gravy, plain nachos and some salad. Very odd.

The Prawn sandwich was delicious and the ale is great

Had lunch here recently the food was ok nothing amazing I’m afraid. It wasn’t very well presented but tasted quite nice. The restaurant area is a bit dark and has a door to the outside that kept being left open by customers. The staff were pleasant and efficient. We are glad we came to visit but wouldn’t rush back.

Beautiful looking pub. When we ordered, I spoke to the serving staff about my food allergies. She checked with chef, who was so professional that he would only offer me a few options. I was very impressed with chef and all five of us had delicious starters and had just begun to eat our equally delicious main courses when our friend had a stroke. We informed staff that we needed an ambulance and this duty was taken on by Chelsea. She remained calm and considerate throughout, as were the less involved staff. Our friends left for the hospital, we two remained to pay the bill and thank staff. I was given some foil, in which to wrap my perfectly cooked steak, to take home. High praise is due to Chelsea, other waiting staff and chef. When our friend recovers, we hope to return for a happier visit! Suzie.

Stopped here for a bite to eat after a drive in the countryside. A warm welcome and beautiful surroundings made this a perfect place to stop for lunch. The food was spot on and service was excellent. Will be back to try some more things off the menu.

Disappointing. No fish dishes available (on a Friday!). No pepper mill available - to liven up the bland food. Service was OK.

Quite large pub with large garden area. Unfortunately they had run out of cod, chips & peas, and ham, egg and chips so settled for cheeseburger and chips. Disappointing as it was before lunchtime rush. Said the had been let down by fishmongers.

I visited the Shepherd & Dog with my two sisters while visiting the area. Having visited this pub numerous times I was very disappointed this time. We ordered coffees and sausage sandwich. When trying to eat it the skin on the sausage was so tough couldn't even eat it. We told the barmaid who went across and told the landlord, he simply shrugged his shoulders totally not interested. A shame after many years of going into pub will not return. Maybe they should consider that their customers are more important than water the plants

A very traditional old British pub, friendly polite staff. Food was OK without being anything special. 2 of us had liver & bacon, liver was tough & neither of us found any bacon, other person had ham egg & chips she said ham was nice but chips were not.

Wow!!! Talk about unwelcoming!!!! Unless you’re a local then don’t expect a warm welcoming!!! The manager was rude and arrogant!!! Messed up our table booking…. Food wasn’t that great and felt rushed!! Was only the 2 young girls serving us that gave us a smile!!! Otherwise felt so unwelcome !!!! The manager talking to his “locals” giving us funny looks!!! NEVER WOULD I GO HERE AGAIN!!

Visited today (14th Feb) for the Valentine's Day menu. The food was exceptional and together with the service, made our evening memorable. Highly recommended.

We had not visited the Shepherd & Dog for many years. We got there fairly early on Sunday and got our chosen table by the window. It soon filled up in the restaurant section and the bar was also busy. The food was excellent - my husband had roast pork and I chose lamb. The veggies were all perfectly coked the meat tender. We skipped dessert as we were full, but have booked for Valentine's Night as the menu looked so interesting. SB

Had a Sunday roast and the food was great. My wife had the lamb and me and my son had the beef. Full Plate of food, great Yorkshire pud and good selection of vegetables. The waitresses were excellent. Very attentive and friendly. Complements to the chef Phil and all of the staff.

We come here frequently for just a drink or meal.Always great service and food is fabulous, lots of choice, big portions and beautifully cooked. Highly recommend !

Hands down our favorite local pub for drinks and dining.

The toad in the hole was stoggy, the sausages were hardly cooked they were white I eat out quite alot this is the worst place I have been to will never go there again.

My wife and I visit the Shepherd & Dog regularly both for a drink and to use the restaurant. During our last visit we were shown their new menu. The choices looked good so we decided to eat - my wife had the Mig 21...

Pub has always been good. However, disappointed as the website says they close at 11pm, but tonight they had cashed up before 10:30pm, and told us they were going to close an hour before that! So either the staff were snacking off early, or the website needs to be updated. The staff also need to be trained to make sure customers are informed if closing early.

Mother in Wars 80th and whilst venue is well situ, there is a main road outside. Gardens are lovely restaurant a bit cramped. We had the use of the Gazebo which was nice. Bar ok, DJ was average. £100 per hour good value. Silly rule...
