The food in the Sheep's Heid was fantastic. I had spiced carrot & coriander soup which was very tasty and my husband had white crab on Sourdough. I then had steak and malbec pie which was amazing. My husband had slow cooked pork belly and scallops which he said was divine. Booking is a must so you are not disappointed. Oliver and Isla we very welcoming and friendly, thank you both for making our experience so good.

This was a bit of a disappointment. Love the atmosphere and interior. Service was ok. Food was bland; some of it tasted like it had been microwaved. I can't recommend this except for possibly those who want to travel to a somewhat remote area of Edinburgh and experience a pub-like atmosphere.

A lovely pub in an interesting area of Edinburgh with great food and service. Our two dogs were welcome and we were given a great table with space behind for them out of everyone else's way. The drinks and food menus were both extensive and everything we had was delicious. Would highly recommend and we will be back.

I love a good pub and after many decades visiting Edinburgh, decided to visit the ‘oldest pub’. The location and outside are impressive but inside is a let down. An unsympathetic modern aesthetic coupled with a tiny bar space contributed to its unwelcoming feel. It’s not cosy. Staff are lovely but they can’t mitigate against a poor refurb. Shame.

We were embarrassed having Irish relations on their first visit to Edinburgh. We weren't allowed to drink at the bar and had to sit outside in the cold. My sister-in-law chose the beef but was told it would be a 45 minute wait, so changed to the chicken. We then sat at the table for an hour and, since we had exceeded the waiting time for the beef, we asked to change the chicken order back to beef. We were told this wouldn't be possible and we would have to stick with the chicken. When our meals finally arrived both my pork and my sister-in-law's chicken were cold and on cold plates. We asked to have both meals microwaved, which took ages, all the while the two others in our party were waiting to start their meals. Our plates were eventually returned but, bizarrely, minus the vegetables and yorkshire pudding! They were still cold but now with hot gravy!! Throughout our experience, the waitress didn't seem to care. We paid full price for our meals and left feeling incredibly disheartened. Not a great advert for, what used to be, a favourite pub of ours.

The service felt off putting from the beginning feeling rushed to order right off the bat. Never experience this anywhere else in a two week stay. And when rushed then waited a very long time for drinks which our waiter said he was a bartender too. My meal was very dry and tough and I said this to the server even needed a stronger knife to cut. You would think leaving an entire plate of food uneaten would concern staff but we were just another number here I realize in the end. The most attention received was at the end when each table is told to give google review and boast how good they are. Well for an establishment in the food industry one should realize that providing good quality food and service will be automatically rewarded by reviews without having to ask patrons to do it.

Visited yesterday for Sunday lunch. We had been booked for ages and were looking forward to it. We were disappointed! Waited an hour for food to arrive, it was lukewarm and dry. I ordered the trio of meat and the portions were meagre. I appreciate it was busy and the waiting staff were doing their best but for the price I would expect much better.

We had such fun at this historic tavern located in the charming village of Duddingston. Had we known how beautiful it was, we would have arrived earlier and walked around. The traditional food with a modern twist was excellent. Standouts were the grilled mushrooms and artisan bread board baked on the premises for starters. The waitstaff was engaging and fun, sharing tidbits about the inn’s long history. We sat in the throne-like chairs Queen Elizabeth brought with her when she dined here in 2016. And we played a round of skittles in the country’s oldest bowling alley to work off the calories from our decadent desserts. A fun, history-filled and tasty evening!

A lovely characterful building - skittle alley a one off - But like other venues in the chain (Salisbury Arms) the food offer has gradually expanded to the entire building's footprint - even the public bar. Its a balance - but would be nice if the bar area was kept free for those popping in for a quick pint...rather than the historic pub becoming a restaurant with attached bar counter in the corner....

This is our second visit here as a family and while we were early for our reservation , they seated us quickly and with no fuss. We all ordered starters and a main and had a nice bottle of white and 3 ofus had gin and tonics The starters weee disappointing- the whipped goats cheese didn’t have a strong enough taste ( that was feedback from 2 sons) and my squid was slightly chewy however mains were very good particularly the fish and chips where the fish was fresh and the batter very crispy. The overall bill worked out at less than £50 each and that was with service charge and the service was very good considering how busy it was ( we had Les who was friendly and attentive ) We would come back but perhaps go for pudding rather than starters as atmosphere is nice and it is relatively good value for money

:) a nice place to relax and grab a drink or bite to eat with family after a hike up and down Arthur's seat. Currently it is a higher end restaurant that would cater to royalty that charges fairly normal prices. Gone is the Inn of 20 years ago that was a drinking / party inn for backpackers. Currently it is the Oldest pub in Edinburgh and Scotland. Worth a look just for the history and of course the fairly normal prices for food and drink.

We had the pleasure of going here for my son's birthday. My first visit in 30 years and everyone's first to the restaurant. The pub downstairs is just lovely and old school. We were seen to quickly and efficiently and led upstairs to our reservation. The atmosphere was very nice and the staff attention was just right. Food wise we skipped starters and went straight to the main course. I went for the grilled sea bass which was truly excellent. Everyone else went for a roast. There are various options/combos available. Youngest went for chicken, my wife went for beef, eldest went for everything and his girlfriend had two meats. All loved their food. The only criticism was that the Yorkshire puddings were a bit flat or squashed but that did not detract from their excellent taste. Pudding was generous, brownies were very good and my pavlova was enormous. The guiness was good and the expresso martinis to end it all were very nice. I'd recommend this place to anyone who wants something a bit special.

We had a delicious dinner at the Sheep Heid on our first night in Edinburgh. It turned out to be Robert Burns night, so the upstairs was fully booked, and we had an opportunity to hear the piper as he led the guests and the haggis into the dinner. We sat downstairs in a lovely pub setting. Our servers, Isla and Kamil, were extremely friendly and gracious. The food was delicious - my rump of lamb was cooked perfectly, and the mashed potatoes and carrots were absolutely scrumptious alongside. The starters, whipped goat cheese and the chipotle sticky chicken, were also extremely enjoyable. The rest of my party got pizzas and burgers which were also excellent. My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit. We have not tried their room and board so I cannot speak to that, but judging by the restaurant decor it's all very cosy and typically Scottish. If you are looking for a proper Scottish experience, Sheepsheid absolutely fits the bill. It's also in a beautiful location next to Holyrod Park, so one can take a nice walk (weather permitting) and end it with a delicious meal/drink at the Sheepsheid. We came for dinner and drinks yesterday with my sisters dog (the ground floor is dog friendly) and were helped by the lovely and very helpful Kamil. For a Tuesday evening in January they were quite busy as they had a large group upstairs and limited staff. We were informed right away that the kitchen might be a bit slower, which was no issue as the Inn is very comfortable and they serve delicious hand crafted cocktails. We can highly recommend the blood orange and passion fruit collins. I ordered the Lamb rump medium rare, they cooked it perfectly. It was served with gravy and a wonderful potato mash and a bed of roast vegetables. Everything was considered, not like some restaurants where the sides are just an afterthought. My partner had the maple glazed pork, also served with mash and gravy. It was also incredibly delicious and cooked to his preferences. The portion size was perfect, we personally did not need starters, though they do look very enticing. The quality/price is extremely reasonable. For dessert we shared the cheesecake trio, which was beautifully presented and each flavour was fresh, and not overly sweet, not was it overly rich which was welcome after the meat heavy meal. Furthermore, Vincent the dog was doted on to no end recieved many treats, which we never requested. He was made to feel very comfortable and was very happy to hang out. I cannot stress enough how wonderful Kamil and the rest of the staff were, they really made the experience - thank you all so much, if time allows we'll back before our stay ends.

We ordered using the 50% off January deal emailed to us having signed up for the newsletter, were offered ‘specials’ menus and after double checking with staff that they were valid, were served a different version of the dish from their regular menu. The staff...

Came into the pub after walking around in the freezing weather and was warmly welcomed by the manager Carly. We ordered pizza and the billionaire fries, which were absolutely scrumptious. Service was impeccable and the waiter serving us (Olly?) Was very attentive and polite.

Consigliato.

Really lovely visit for Saturday lunch. I’m coeliac, and Isla had answers to all my questions straight away. When she came to take our order we both asked for slight variations to the menu - and she remembered it all. I had the Nourish Bowl...

I’ve visited the Sheep Heid on numerous occasions, most recently for a weekday dinner. It’s a very cosy pub and restaurant with an amazing unique feature of a skittles alley, which I have enjoyed on a couple of previous visits. On my last visit the food was good. We had a couple of starters, both tasted excellent though the portion sizes were quite small for the price. For main we had pork belly which was good, though not mind blowing. We also tried the fish and chips which had beautifully light batter and tasty chips, as well as the nourish bowl which was okay, though mainly al dente broccoli. A bit hefty price-wise, but not unusual these days for Edinburgh unfortunately. One thing that irked me a bit was the menu itself. It was difficult to read and inaccessible due to bad formatting; random font weights, inconsistent letter cases, and sporadic spacing. Additionally it listed each dish’s calories, many of which were very high. As someone recovering from disordered eating, this really negatively affected me. I know there is a current debate in government over this, but I was under the impression that it wasn’t yet mandatory for smaller restaurants, in which case I would recommend having nutritional info available for those who want it, but not as the default.

The waitress in the dining room upstairs was lovely and very attentive. The pub looked absolutely great and the atmosphere was simply brilliant. We had the lamb Sunday roast and it was very chewy which left me a little sad as everything else was lovely. Suggest perhaps to have lamb shoulders rather than what you serve which was touch and could not cut with the knife.

I celebrated my 60th birthday at Sheep Heid inn. We booked everything from Australia so we didn’t really know what to expect however the service and the food exceeded our expectations. I can’t recommend them highly enough. Thank you Tony and Kamil for making my day very special.
