My husband and I happened upon The Sheep Heid Inn following a walk through Holyrood Park and Dr. Neil's Garden a couple days ago. What a lovely surprise! It's a beautiful, old pub with lots of history, which our server Martin shared with us. Our lunch (steak sandwich and soup, brownie with ice cream) was tasty, although we wished the sandwich had more steak in it. The pub was extremely busy, yet Martin gave us top-notch, friendly service and did not hurry us. We look forward to returning to this charming pub when we return to Edinburgh next year.

First, let me say we booked this place because we thought with the history of the building and the way it presents itself that it would be a Scottish experience. No no. ... Let's start at the beginning....We received an email just a few hours before our reservation that they didn't have staff and wouldn't be able to serve us but would offer a discount when we came in. We frantically tried to find a new place. Then one hour before our scheduled time, we got an email saying they DID have a chef and we could use our scheduled time. We arrived excited and eager but the restaurant was blasting early 2000s boy band music and the wait staff was distant at best. They claim to have gluten free options but everything we asked for, they said the chef said was too stale and they wouldn't serve it. The food we finally got was not good and the service was just as bad. If you're looking for good food or a cozy vibe, this isn't it.

Breakfast at The Sheep Heid was excellent. The food was fresh, well-cooked, and clearly made with quality ingredients. My eggs were perfectly poached, the sourdough was crisp and chewy. The sausages were some of the best I’ve tasted! The coffee was strong and smooth, and everything came out hot and quickly. Service was friendly and efficient, and the staff made sure we had everything we needed without hovering. Overall, it was a great breakfast — tasty, well-presented food, good portions, and a relaxed atmosphere. I’d definitely go back.

Lovely vibes and good drinks at the bar. The building is historic and it was very busy so we were lucky to find a table immediately. Make a reservation if possible and a must for big groups! Rona or whatever her name is was absolutely horrible, didn’t acknowledge my existence as we entered and even stood at the bar waiting to be acknowledged as she served two people even customers who came behind us and walked away. Nearly left the establishment cus of how horrible I felt. Thankfully we were noticed by another member of staff and served. We tried but couldn’t get over it and left without ordering food. Bar for locals perhaps, not tourist friendly (even polite ones!)

À nice place to eat if you've just come down from Arthur's seat. Atmosphere is lovely, and it's your traditional pub scene. Service was a bit off.... The sign says "wait to be seated if you're eating".... So I waited..... For 10 mins, before someone approached me to ask if I'd like a table. The food.... Standard pub fare. The chicken burger was....ok. Thought it would have been breaded and fried on site, but no. The desserts at the table next to me looked wonderful though, and the soup I had was delicious. Overall, a fine place....

The Sheep Heid Inn is a must-visit! Scotland’s oldest pub, and you can truly feel the history in every corner. The cozy ambiance wraps around you the moment you sit down, making it the perfect place to unwind after a hike up Arthur’s Seat. We had a fantastic time with delicious food, warm atmosphere, and outstanding service from Harry and Rhona. We even got to sit at the same table the Queen used on her last visit to Edinburgh! Don’t forget to ask your server to show you the traditional bowling alley tucked away at the back—it’s like stepping back in time. A memorable experience—be sure to book in advance!

This is wrongly listed as accommodation but is actually a pub/restaurant. We had a delicious meal here with family who are visiting from Canada. The Sunday roast was to die for. The asparagus and pea risotto was delicious (though the portion size was a little skimpy). The seabass was also delicious. The only minus point we would was actually being able to get hold of staff. The first floor where we were was often unmanned, and when it was, the staff just weren't being vigilant. They were very focused on delivering food to specific tables but we're not mindful that other tables might need attention. It took us over 20 minutes to be able to ask for our bill and that was only because I literally chased a staff member down. Really really food in a great environment just let down by inattentive service.

As Edinburgh's oldest pub, the history and ambiance of the place gives a cosy feel to it. I brought two friends here tonight for a meal. We had a starter to share, then two of us had the chicken pies, lovely crusty pies with a cheesy flavour with mash, vegetables and gravy, the other person had the duck salad which she told us was delicious. They also have a good selection of desserts, The staff were attentive and friendly and the menu is full of local produce, well cooked. There are also local ales on offer as well as the usual wines, spirits etc. We'll definitely be coming back here.

So attentive and also funny! Rhona I wish you all the best! We came over to mainly have Sunday Roast and it did not disappoint! We both had the half chicken! And the best thing ever? Bottomless gravy!!! I do like my roast practically swimming in gravy! And then for dessert we had the Chocolate bomb and then we went back to our hotel and fell into deep sleep! Thank you so much for this experience! Such kind and lovely staff and great food!

The pub's atmosphere is great, the staff were very nice but not very attentive, and the food was disappointing, especially for the price we paid. We visited last Saturday and there were people in but I would not describe it as busy. I am all for the ethos of good food doesn't come fast, but other than the meal I had ordered for myself (fish and chips) the rest of our party were very disappointed with the quality of their meals for the price we paid. We waited a long time for our meals to arrive. The children's meals, apart from the chips were inedible - unfortunately, the staff did not check back on us to see how our food was so it could not be rectified. We had also wanted to order more drinks which we had wanted but there was no one around to ask. The burger buns were stale and the burgers were very dry. They ate what they could as they were hungry after a long wait. I certainly won't be going there again for a meal. Would only go back for pints and chips.

Don't trust the pictures. We turned up slightly early for our table booked way in advance. We immediately had mixups on our drinks, food, and timing of our food. The service was so slow despite it being practically empty, and we couldn't even finish our mains before they had begun closing up (we must've been there two hours with one drink ordered each, waiting, beforehand). Drinks were underwhelming and tasted watered down, food was bland with most of the menu unavailable. What we can only assume was the manager (from her tone of voice) preemptively brought out my friends main before I had even ordered mine, and then thought it appropriate to reprimand a member of staff right next to our table over what seemed to be a completely unrelated matter... This place was empty, and that's a back of house matter. I've no doubt they'll reply with the same insincere offer to contact them, as is the the case from other user reviews... I now know this isn't a one-off, but a serious drop in level of service that's been happening for a while now. It's sad, that a building with such a storied history is in incapable hands, but at least they'll still have their visit from the queen a decade ago to brag about. The staff came across as endearing, but definitely seemed to be under poor management. It's a shame I had to waste time and money there. £100 down the drain, and for the first time in my life, I just wished I walked out.

Met a friend here for a late lunch/early dinner, easy to find and parked in pub car park around back. Lovely place, lots of atmosphere, cosy but tables not too close together either! Huge choice of food on the menu & a good range of non alcoholic drinks too. Staff friendly & welcoming. Our waitress Ciara was very helpful with queries about things on the menu & happy to make smalltalk while we decided. Food was great & came in a timely manner. We sat for 3 hours & did not feel rushed at all or feel like we had to leave because we were finished. Highly recommended.

My wife, baby daughter and 2 friends went here for lunch last week. The venue is an attractive authentic pub. It may be old but it is clean, comfortable and had a pleasant vibe. They have a good menu, offering a variety of pub classics and also some unique dishes. The staff were young, polite and well-mannered. Although, I was a bit nervous when the lifted hot food over my daughters head. I feel like they should’ve went to the side of her. I also noticed that they didn’t tell us what the daily specials were. Nevertheless, for starters we ordered halloumi fries, beef ragu croquettes and the sticky chicken bites. All these dishes were excellent and arrived at an adequate time after ordering. I particularly enjoyed the halloumi fries. They perhaps lacked crisp but the certainly made up for it in flavour. The sweet chilli dip was marvellous. The croquettes and chicken bites were also very tasty and cooked well. For mains I was stuck between the surf and turf and the lamb rump. I asked the waiter for a recommendation and he didn’t really sell it but he suggested I went with the lamb. I commend this as the S&T was more expensive. For a side I got some mac and cheese. I think everyone else ordered a burger of some sort. Now this is when the review takes a dive. So our table was booked for 12:30 and we were hoping to get away for 2:30 so my daughter could have a nap (unnecessary details) but here we are and it’s 3pm and we are still waiting on our mains. The restaurant was pretty full and so I appreciate that they were very busy. The staff were nice enough to tell us that there would be a 20 min delay for our mains and then over 30 mins had passed (no offering of top up drinks) and they came back and again further apologised and said that it’ll be another 7 mins (wow, very precise) but we waited way more than this. Again, we m understood that it was busy and cut them some slack but nobody had food at their table around us. It was almost like the chef had finished early. By the time our food came I was hungry again and was expecting a beautiful feast of a meal. Unfortunately this wasn’t the case. I got a few pieces of lamb and some potatoes - Really?? I ate it in about 3 mins. It tasted fine but my expectation was way higher, especially at £24!! The mac and cheese was way overcooked, lacking any creaminess. Crisp on top and crisp on bottom. Very disappointing. Others felt their burgers were satisfactory, but as good as they hoped? Certainly not. They looked and tasted very basic and so did the fries. My friend upgraded to billionaire fries which was comical. They looked the exact same as the normal fries and we were about to tell the staff that there was an error with the order but he realised there was a little bit of parmesan on top. I didn’t realise that this is what makes them billionaire - wow! By the time we finished our mains were had grab the bill and quickly shoot off! This was a real shame because I was looking forward to having a dessert as they had a good selection. We didn’t fancy waiting another hour for these. If it wasn’t for the lovely starters I would give this place a 2 star. This further backs our theory that the chef left mid shift because the mains were significantly worse. Maybe the waiters had to make the food themselves? Thankfully the good company made up for the disappointing, and expensive, meal. 3 stars is VERY generous.

Really disappointing visit. Food took ages to come, was cold and had to be sent back. Not worth the money as had the look and taste of a supermarket frozen meal that had not been heated up properly. Serving staff were fantastic, friendly and run off their feet. We were seated upstairs and the room felt cold too.

Visited today for the first time. Staff friendly and the pub looks just lovely. Unfortunately that’s the end of the good points. The food was really disappointing. We were in for lunch before 3pm and were told they’d run out of burgers. My pork belly was tasty, but some of my potatoes were undercooked. The crackling was the worst I’ve ever had, and I had three massive pieces. Couldn’t eat it. “Bottomless gravy” but you have to ask for it. Just as well, because there was not enough on my plate. Side order of chips was served cold. Won’t be hurrying back.

It's IKEA...they just do everything right. Ample parking, great cafe with great value food, staff were very helpful and polite while shopping and checking out. If I had one small niggle...some signage to get over to the pick-up point would be useful, especially if it's the first time going there.

Would give 0 stars if I could. Avoid this place like the plague. Ordered three drinks and they served me one and then I was left waiting over half an hour for another one. When I was served my pink lemonade it was undrinkable. I then asked for a peach ice tea which they then took another twenty minutes to make. Toilets look like something from a horror film, obviously hasn't been cleaned in days?! How this place is still open is beyond me. Staff are useless, slow and clueless.

Great place to shop for clothes. Much the same as Edinburgh Woollen Mill things but a lot more too. Cafe is good too.
