Always given a warm welcome, rooms are clean, comfortable and the place is perfectly positioned for exploring Kendal and the surrounding area. The staff are so accommodating, going above and beyond. Very lovely place to stay! The location is central but quiet - couldn’t have been any better! The staff were lovely and the food in the pub delicious! The room was great overall - there was a strong drain smell when we first arrived, but either the fan cleared it or we acclimatised to it, because we couldn’t smell it the next morning. Very nice room apart from that, with modern bathroom facilities. Would definitely highly recommend!

This is Wetherspoons on a bad day. When we checked in we had to pay for our room in full before we'd even seen our room. Says something about the usual clientele.... At dinner I ordered Cauliflower Wings which was basically virtually raw cauliflower florets (no coating or batter) with a sauce out of a bottle. Main was a pie that had obviously been microwaved from the freezer. £74 for 3 and I could produce way better myself. I asked for the good bill to be put on my account as we were residents and I was told I needed to pay now... The bar and restaurant service is run by kids. Outside the stairs to our room was a pile of broken furniture and rubbish that they couldn't be bothered to clear away. It's very very poor. One final thing - at least Spoons has decent beer...dont wasre your money here.

We visited as a large group of 60, and Lee was so helpful in the run up to the event. He ran a special menu and closed to the public, which we really appreciated. The pub itself is beautiful, has a lovely feel to it. A very cool basement area too. The waiting/bar staff were so friendly and welcoming. Smiles on their faces and couldn't have been more helpful. They certainly worked hard for our group that night! Yes, there was a wait for the food - we were an extremely large group. However, when it arrived, it was absolutely delicious, fresh and piping hot. Actually the best roast dinner I've had for many years. The mark of a good business is how they put things right when things go a little wrong - they more than made up for the wait by offering a very generous discount, and by their genuine apologies. I would definitely return, and look forward to another fabulous roast dinner at the Shakespeare Inn.

Booked as a group months before arriving to the place all meals were preordered as requested, all starters were served with 20 min gaps between us and the rest of all our tables. Ended up giving my starter to my son before I have received mine rest of the party had the same, so felt awkward when one person from the table was eating and the rest was just watching. 2h after our starters there were still no mains served. Few mains have arrived between the tables after that time, many kids not fed yet. Again mains randomly were served to all tables, some kids got the food , some still waited for their food but others already have finished. Decided to leave. Bar staff has asked for Michael ( assuming a manager or a chef) to come when I have informed them that I am leaving. Didn’t want to be difficult, but we have arrived at 5pm and there were no mains for most of the party to 7.30pm. No apology, they were more interested in what I have ordered for my main so no need to cook it anymore. Paid for starters and left. Avoid, better places in Kendal Work for a hospitality myself and this was an unique experience, an example how not to operate

Chose this smart, cosy pub for an evening meal based on the menu published outside, however once we were in the menu was totally different and then they didn't have certain options available! Main dishes were OK, my fish and chips was good with the fish being cooked very well. We would have had pudding but 'crumble of the day' turned out to be 'no crumble!' Pint of Beavertown was very good!

When we actually arrived we arrived to a warm welcoming atmosphere and staff and greeted with possibly the cleanest pub I have ever seen. Ordering drinks and food was difficult as the menus are so wel thought out. I had the lam shank and my wife had the pie. They were both amazing. Well balanced with veg it was delicious and huge (though manageable on a empty stomach) Would (and will) definitely recommend to friends and family visiting Kendal.

Finding somewhere to eat in Kendal is a challenge, some of the pubs are shut, some are not serving food and restaurants are limited, so I was grateful when the Shakespeare squeezed me in. I did find its menu exceptionally limited and over priced. Its one of those kind of places that sees itself more master chef than pub grub. I do wish chefs stopped seeing cooking as an art project. Anyway I tried their three little piggies meal which was pleasant enough, three different types of sausages with various trimmings and also enjoyed the ice cream in a glass for desert. They are nice people in there, polite and try hard, but its nothing special.

We trailed around and everywhere was fully booked until a local recommended this pub. The dining room is upstairs, with a wonderful candlelit atmosphere and extremely well trained staff. There is an efficient 1 way system. We weren't sure what to go for, so tried a selection of tapas which was a great choice, even accounting for the ample gluten free options I chose.

As mentioned in the title the Shakespeare Inn is one of the best pub / restaurants I have ever been too. It had everything you would expect & want from a local pub - great food, great beer and great atmosphere!!I was passing through Kendal on a charity walk and stayed the night just up the road from the Shakespeare. I decided to go out for some food and a few beers and stumbled up on this place, and I am so glad I did! They had the live football on which was an instant draw, the decor and building was beautiful - a real traditional look and feel to it. Inside again the atmosphere was lovely and I must say the service all round was absolutely spot on, felt very welcome!I ordered lasagne (standard I know but really fancied one) and I am going to go out on a limb and say it is definitely the best lasagne I have ever had in my life, it was incredible!Overall I absolutely loved this place and am itching to get back up there, the town of Kendal in general was absolutely wonderful to be honest, really impressed by my whole experience up there!

So glad I tried this spot, was not disappointed! On a whim I looked at the menu a little while ago and several things enticed me in so myself and a friend decided to give this a go as neither of us have ever been in even though we both live in Kendal!Service was a little sporadic, they were obviously busy on a Saturday lunchtime (expected), and I’m not 100% sure if it’s supposed to be order at the table (they were taking orders at tables but the waitress did say if we were ready we could also go to the bar) So as we knew they were quite busy we ordered at the bar, however there aren’t any obvious table numbers that we saw, so would maybe be helpful for it to either be waitress service OR order at the bar with a number, as we saw that this got confusing for others and ourselves. We also noticed that a couple of the orders on the tables around us had either been waiting an extremely long time, or something was missing with their order, and the waitresses both gave different reasons to these tables as to why (contradicting themselves, sometimes helps your case if you both know what you’re saying to the table) however both waitresses were extremely friendly and helpful so that definitely helped their cause (maybe just a bit more training needed). Although it was quite a long wait for the food I can 100% say it was worth it. Not many pubs in Kendal these days that are good value for money. This certainly was; you could tell right away that the food was home made to a great standard and the portion sizes were definitely more than sufficient! Overall extremely good value for money!!!! I will definitely return here, and tell friends/family to try this spot out because there’s loads on the menu i want to try!

Stayed at the Shakespeare Inn on a recent visit to Kendal. We chose to stay here over the Premier Inn as we prefer to support local businesses and we thought we would get a better stay (prices we similar). Firstly, when trying to find the car park we drove passed it a few times as the car park is through a very narrow archway. We hadn't realised this at first and were a bit shocked, but when I looked back through my emails, they did kindly email us to let us know. If you get the car positioned right and one person guides you in, then the free parking is great! We received a very warm welcome on arrival and we're shown to our very clean and spacious room. Unfortunately the bathroom is terrible, mouldy, broken in places. It is due an upgrade which was imminent (building materials outside the door). I was just surprised they charged full price given the poor state of the bathrooms. After settling into our room we decided to eat in the pub. The pub itself is fantastic, the staff were excellent, the food was lovely. We did have an issue with one meal being stone cold, albeit super tasty so I ate it anyway, but they still didn't charge us for it, which is great service. We stayed for a few drinks and then went into Kendal for a few drinks. The Inn is in a fantastic location. I was looking forward to my bed and a lie in as it was the first night away after having a baby. Unfortunately, the beds were really uncomfortable, lumpy, matress and pillows that are in serious need of replacing. I had a really bad nights sleep (despite a number of drinks) and have woken early in quite a lot of pain. The breakfast was excellent with fantastic choice.

A good choice of food in the restaurant with helpful staff. Sunday roast was very good. Only thing I didn't like and I wasn't the only one, is dogs in the restaurant. Sorry but food and dogs don't go together.

Had two meals here in the evenings and on both occasions the food was excellent and we found the staff very friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble and always with a smile however busy they were. I would certainly recommend this restaurant to anyone staying in that area

We stumbled upon here by accident passing through Kendal and were greeted by friendly staff. We both got the two course Sunday lunch (bargain price) and it was delicious! Dog friendly too so we got to play with a lovely Labrador. Good value, good food and lovely staff.

Stopped overnight enroute to Scotland. Was given a warm and friendly welcome, room was clean but basic, bathroom clean but a bit worn!! Comfortable bed, and although it’s situated on the main high street it was reasonably quiet!

Visited this pub for an evening drink. The premises are clean and well presented. There was a wide choice of drinks including real ales. I didn't eat here so can't comment on the food. Would definitely recommend a visit to this pub

There’s an automatic 5 circles for having black pudding on the menu and the black pudding with chorizo salad did not disappoint especially paired with a Taylor’s landlord as recommended by the bar staff.

Excellent food and reasonable prices. Highly recommend the lamb shoulder. Little wait for food but on a busy Saturday that’s acceptable. And I would rather wait for fresh qualify food than something warmed up.

We were staying nearby overnight on our way to Bowness on Windermere. Called in here after looking online. So glad we did. The staff were really friendly and the food was amazing. I had the roast lamb, not fatty just loads of tasty lamb. Another bonus was fresh vegetables too and proper home made Yorkshire puddings. My husband had the shakey burger and he couldn't fault it. Worth calling in if you are in the area.

Popped in here to watch the England game. Decided on sausage and mash in Yorkshire pudding. Food was superb in quality and really tasty. Came back the second night and had half rack of ribs. Again, absolutely spot on! Staff friendly, food great, not that expensive for what it is (more expensive at the premier inn down the road). Would love be to come back tomorrow but have to move on to Carlisle tomorrow.

Staying in Kendal for one overnight. We walked along river into the town centre to look for an ATM & a place to eat. Just along from ATM we saw this place & menu outside looked good & reasonably priced. We were given a warm cheery Good Evening the minute we opened the door. There were plenty of free tables & we were shown to a few to select from & advised of the soup of the day. I went for the Wobbly Bob Pie & hubby chose the Lasagne. We were not disappointed. Both were delicious, served promptly & piping hot. Staff were attentive but not intrusive. Nice atmosphere in the place too. We then discovered they did rooms & I think next visit we would try & stay there. 2 main courses, 1 soft drink & 1 glass wine £29 - very pleased with that. Highly recommended.

We called in to the "Shakey" for my birthday meal and weren't disappointed. The food was amazing! There was a good choice on their menu and we thought they were reasonably priced. Our food came quite quickly even though they were busy, it was really good and hot (which isn't always the case!) We couldn't fault it at all. We stayed there for the evening as the atmosphere was fun and welcoming and the hosts Lynne and David made us feel at home. We would highly recommend the Shakespeare Inn and we will definitely be going back ourselves

Nice comfortable pub/hotel. The town was exceptionally busy due to the annual Film Festival being on but this did not detract in any way from the level of service and friendliness of the management & young staff. Absolutely superb. Very attentive, warm and efficient. Food & drink orders were taken quickly, tables were cleared & cleaned immediately and waited on professionally throughout by a well trained & conscientious staff. Manager was particularly attentive. We ordered the salmon & trio of mini pies which were both excellent.

The Sunday lunch (I had roast beef) is excellent value - £12.95 for 2 courses - the starter of chilli king prawns was excellent & plenty of them. The roast was served on a warmed plate & came with plenty of gravy, both roast & mashed potatoes, Yorkshire pudding & a side dish of 3 different veg - all piping hot & cooked to perfection. A pint of Shakesbeer was £3.60.

My Husband and I called in The Shakespeare at the last minute hoping they had space and accepted dogs, which they did. The staff could not be more accommodating and friendly and made a fuss of our 16 month old little girl, as did the locals. The food was good and reasonably priced and our little dog even got her own bowl of water and some treats! Would definitely recommend. Thank you for making us feel so welcome.

Loving the menu change Mart had the trio of pies which are his new favourite off the menu. I had the beef stew and dumplings which was delicious. We highly recommend a visit to try out the great food. We are regular visitors and have never had a bad meal. The service is excellent. David and Lynne are a credit to the Shakespeare. Well done to all the other guys too Stuart, Michael and Phil and the rest of the team

I have heard the Sunday lunch is good, however, the steak I had last time was tough as old boots, in fact could have been old boots. Lately had a sharing platter which was poorly served, the humus looked as though it had already been dipped into and the ribs didn't exactly fall off the bone We were asked twice if we had everything, when we still had no bread and small issue, no plates or cutlery... I think this was a bad night as there are so many mixed reviews. The server wasn't unpleasant just inexperienced. I don't think I will risk it again though.... Such a shame as the building has been so well refurbished and the downstairs area which used to be the L'ile Shop made a very quirky bar space...

We ordered the Sunday roast. It was nice but the roast potatoes were very ordinary. They quickly replaced them. The Yorkshire pudding was delicious as were the veggies. It’s a huge serve and we were happy to share just one serve of veggies. We also had prawns, which were fresh and a delicious apple and blueberry crumble with custard. The staff were super friendly and we were served promptly. We had an enjoyable lunch with good wine and ale.

The room was adequate, tho shower was so small i could hardly get in it. The description of rooms as being like cottages, set apart from pub, was inaccurate. One evening, had three 30 somethings drinking pub beer inches from my window, at a pub picnic table. Plate used as ashtray filled with rainwater and cigarette butts on table for my 3 night stay. Did not feel private but was noisy and invading my space. Poor setup if u want peace and quiet at the end of a long day.

Ate here for dinner the last Saturday in September - very busy so need to book. Enjoyable meal and friendly service. Reasonably pricey, as is everywhere in Grasmere. I had the French onion soup and rack of lamb, both of which were very good indeed.

Drove a bit to find the place closed up and in darkness. Why show the business as being open when it isn't. Terrible to have inaccurate information online.

Called here for a takeaway lunch, used them several times before. Service was disappointing to say the least. Not a please or thankyou from the ladies working in the shop - even when I pointed out they'd only charged me for 1 flat white! Previous reviews also highlight the fact that the staff are miserable, they respond but do nothing to address the concerns raised. Also, I would've thought that as u was the only customer in the shop on a very wet day would have been positive for them - obviously not! Not sure I'll return here.

Visited here with my Dad today. Asked for a tea cake and then a scone both not on the menu anymore. I had a bagel with salmon and cream cheese paid over £8 and that was it no sides, no even a bit of salad - didn’t taste great. Dad ordered pancakes in the end 2 tiny pancakes on a dish - still hungry when we left. Not great service either. Disappointed!
