We didn't have food just a latte , great little cafe , friendly staff , can be very busy , seating in and out

Lovely food after a great walk in the Langdale Valley. Lovely staff, especially the lady who served us- was really helpful and had such a lovely personality. Will recommend and return.

Quite expensive not that friendly

The cafe has had a makeover (changed hands?) since I was last there and the decor is very smart, however completely lacking in the freshly baked cheese stone that I was looking forward to and had much enjoyed on previous occasions. The only scone available (fruit), which did not feature on the menu and was not actually on display, was obviously bought in rather than freshly made and therefore for me a big disappointment. I was also not impressed that no prices were displayed for the tea/coffee or "sweet treats" - which were referred to, but not actually identified on the menu and no itemised bill was supplied so I had no idea how much I'd paid for what! In addition there were no "goodbye and thank yous" as we were leaving - it's the little things that encourage people to return!!

The best Pizza we have ever eaten. It was 12in in size but my wife and I enjoyed every segment. Must revisit for another Pizza

We came here as part of a low level walk, and found this cafe a treasure. We had already had breakfast at home, but couldn’t resist the wild mushrooms on ciabatta with the creamy sauce. This was excellent. It’s hard to believe such a simple meal could give so much pleasure. The latte coffee we had was also delicious. The whole place was immaculately cleaned and smart, with widely spaced steady tables, and the rest of the concise menu options looked very explicable, and good value too. I noted a nice range of alcoholic beverages too. We acquired a booklet on local walls, and look forward to returning very soon to sample more of the attractive offerings of this wonderful eatery.

Mandatory coffee and cake stop after walk along river to Skelwith Bridge and Loughrigg Tarn. Gloriously fresh gluten free carrot cake and two lattes. Would have been 5* but for lack of cleanliness as tables were sticky.

Great little coffee shop for a recharge while out walking. Cakes are to die for. Attended in August 2022. Seating outside that gets busy when weather is nice. Take away drinks are available. Always worth a visit.

Lovely cafe in a great location. Friendly staff but rather expensive.Paid over £15 for 2 decaf coffees, one scone with butter and jam and one scone with just butter. Despite the cost the coffee was excellent and piping hot and the scones were delicious. Will visit again in the future.

Absolutely brilliant full English here. But I desperately needed the WiFi as there's no phone signal for miles but it wouldn't work, the DHCP server wasn't handing out new IPs another customer was the same. Hopefully fixed next time I visit.

It's a nice cafe and dog friendly but pricey. I paid £15 for 2 pots of tea and 4 slices of white bread toast with 2 small pots of jam.

There is no where nicer to spend a lazy Sunday morning than with an amazing latte and breakfast at Slates. I love the smashed avocado on toast with poached eggs which is perfect every time. There is also a lovely range of lunches and specials and the sausage rolls are the best I have ever had. 100% recommend this place as the food is outstanding and you can’t beat the beautiful views on any day.

Popped in for coffee and cake and loved it. We sat in the cute little garden and watched the world go by. Good value, will return!

We had a really, really good breakfast before our trip home. My veggie breakfast was cooked superbly and the halloumi was very tasty.

We were going to go to the pub opposite but don't bother . I had the scarfell pizza and asked for some extra chilli . It was amazing , strawberry milkshake was top notch to . Do stop off here

I have passed Slates on many occassion. But finally paid them a visit (just opened when i arrived in Elterwater after a walk along from Skelwith bridge passing Skelwith force along the way)... Anyhoo.. Slates is an absolute tremendous place if you fancy some quality food & their Beans on Sourdough with a fried duck egg was deliciously superb & fills a hole nicely. Slates is well worth a visit or for me a return visit... Update.. the return visit has happened & a seriously scrumcious pizza it was too

We're regulars at Langdale, so it was interesting to see the old Elterwater post office is now a cafe. We went in after a smaller hike and were very happy. I had a loverly buttermilk chicken burger and my partner had a chicken pesto sandwhich. My burger was fantastic and we both thought the chips were top notch. Very friendly staff, reasonable prices. The only real downside is that its mostly indoor seating, with a small amount of outdoor seating but I can't imagine there is much they can do about that. I would happily eat here again and recommend it to anyone stopping by for lunch.

I stayed at the youth hostel in Elterwater when I was 11 years old. I'm now drawing my pension so that was a while back. Whilst my wife and friends were doing battle with the Fairfield Horseshoe I returned. Lovely little village. I called at Slates and it was a pleasant and very enjoyable experience. I'm not really a burger fan but, after an early start to the day, was ready to eat and drink. I can honestly say this was the best burger I have ever had. It was full of flavour with a generous cheese topping a lovely side salad. I stayed for around an hour and found there was both passing trade and customers using the tables both inside and out. Some of these were obviously locals which is always a good sign. We do not get into the Lakes with any regularity but, the next time we are around, we will be there. Hope you guys are proud of what you are delivering. My only disappointment was that I couldn't eat more!

We arrived to an empty cafe, but a cheery greeting. We ensure a couple of hours of wet and busy roads after an early start. The breakfast we ordered was just outstanding. Freshly cooked, high quality, plenty and great value.

The staff are very friendly and helpful and the food is excellent. We have been before, almost by accident, but we planned the walk to finish so that we could have afternoon tea here

The food from Slates cafe is a perfect addition to a perfect walk. We stopped here for breakfast and it was very popular with walkers and cyclists. Mushrooms on sourdough toast cooked with tarragon were absolutely delicious. The whole menu for lunch and sweet treats...

Went in by chance and glad we did. Very busy which is a sign of quality food. After browsing the menu both of us opted for wild mushrooms on sourdough toast.we asked if we could have a poached duck egg.no problem. When our food arrived it did not disappoint.the mushrooms were poached in a rich creamy tarragon sauce(I love tarragon),the egg was poached to perfection. Lovely food,very nice and friendly staff. Will be going again

Lovely walk today for Mother’s Day. Called in for a drink and a bite to eat just before closing time, however the staff were very obliging and made the three of us a bowl of chips and gave us sausage rolls which I can honestly say were the best we have ever tasted!!😋will most definitely be back. Excellent service also. Thanks so much.

Visited for the first time this year. Initially popped in for lunch and had a lovely fresh sandwich. Returned the next day for breakfast and visited a further couple of times during our week at Langdale. On every occasion the food and service was excellent...

Really lovely stop when hiking. They have the best sausage rolls I have ever had in my life. Friendly staff and we could bring the dog which is great.

We called in for a late breakfast and we were delighted with our choice. We enjoyed the most perfectly poached eggs we have ever had! Carl and Jordan really friendly…great atmosphere. We will most definitely return when next visiting the area.

Very poor hot chocolate that left a strange taste in the mouth.... Was it made with water, or very poor oat milk? Cake very disappointing too. Tasted mass produced and very very sweet. Sorry, I don't like to criticise, but this was poor.

Great food and delicious milkshakes!

Cracking meals at decent prices, better than been stood outside in the rain.

Very disappointed with the service. Totally ignored while he finished cleaning the cutlery. Hot chocolate was made with water. Scone and sausage roll were left in the microwave and we had to remind him that we had not been served. These had been over cooked...

The food was just incredible, the home made toasted tea cake and sausage rolls were just amazing. Only been to one coffee shop with as good homemade food in Clifton, Bristol. I think you should maybe offer a couple of different coffee types as people's taste vary and wasn't my favourite kind of coffee. Thank you!

OK so we found ourselves in Elterwater on a very miserable afternoon after walking our two vizslas in the area. Soaked through and hungry we spotted this little gem with a dog pawprint in the window, indicating it was dog friendly. Now, many eateries claim...

We’re made very welcome by the hosts - despite having 2 large wet dogs! Had originally just called in for a coffee and pastry but then tempted by the scrambled egg and smoked salmon which was lovely along with the brown sourdough bread with bits...

Great service, great drinks and great food. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, they had no problems with our soaking wet dog coming inside. All in all we liked it so much we stopped by again before setting off back home.

Visited Slates three times for breakfasts last week when staying in Elterwater. Partner had usual Cumbrian breakfast ( being Cumbrian himself, he likes his traditions!) which he was pleased with but I was delighted with avocado toast with poached eggs, huge bacon and egg sandwich...

took my vegan friends out for walk from ambleside to great langdale valley and this was a brilliant half way house lunch break stopover in gorgeous elterwater. mouthwatering delicious home made food made fresh on the spot with lots of carnivore (moi) vegan and veggie...

We visited Slates twice during our stay and were very happy both times. This used to be just a tearoom but I’m pleased to say that the changes are very welcome. First visit we had a freshly made pizza with a pint of Lakes lager....

Great place to stop after a walk around Elter Water. You can eat in or take away and there is a wide range of vegetarian and gluten free options on the menu that won't break the bank.

Went there today, supposed to be open at 9 hung around for half an hour, saw at least 10 other people come and go. Conclusion..... only open when the owner feels like it. Ignore posted opening hours in window or online..... Infact just go somewhere else

Incredible! The food was so perfectly done. The menu is modern and there is plenty of choice for everyone. Vegans and vegetarians included. The staff are really warm and so is the interior. Oh, the coffee is great too! Maybe my favourite cafe in the Lakes.

We're from London visiting the Lake District and taking in the beautiful scenes when we got hungry. We googled near by places to eat and Slates came up. The staff and chef were all really friendly, the place was really clean with modern vibrant decor. Now lets talk about the food. We ordered the 6oz Prime Beef Burger with cheese and bacon and the Langdale Hottie 10" stone bakes Pizza - freshly grilled chicken, chorizo, tomatoe, mozzarella, mixed chillies, roasted Bell pepper and rocket! My wife and split both meals. I started with the pizza and loved it, you could taste how fresh the ingredients were, no added salt or condiments were necessary- I almost didn't want to share it. Then my wife cut the burger in half and placed my share on my plate. Oh my goodness! This burger, was succulent, full of flavour, meaty and simply amazing. Straight away I knew this was gonna make top 5 of my burger list - and I'm a burger guy, I've bitten into buns all over the world - but before I had finished my half I had to stop and ask myself if I've ever had a better burger, no answer came back, so this must be number 1! The fact that the burgers are homemade right there in the restaurant goes some way toward explaining what made this burger so special. This review is a lot longer than I expected it to be but I am genuinely thinking of staying here till I'm hungry again so that I can buy another one!!!

I stayed at ambleside in June for a week with my family. We visited this cafe a few occasions 3 times for tea and two times for breakfast. Well what could we say the first night we eat here, we couldn't belive how fantastic the food was it was delelicious. It was also very well priced and the staff were lovely and very welcoming. We will definitely be returning in the near future when we come here again!! It's worth every penny here

Fantastic food and lovely staff. We were here for a week an had the food from here 4 nights, outstanding everytime. The staff always make you feel welcome and as a company running on only 4 staff they make it look seamless.

We were here to grab a quick togo sandwich lunch deal - surprisingly super tasty! I had the tomato cheese pickles sandwich, which is soooooo good.

The food is good and they're trying really hard to get it right during COVID but it's just not great service, just adequate.

Nice place, good food but a bit to echoey for me couldn't hear what people were saying, saying, saying😟

They serve everything now on single use plastic which unfortunately rules this cafe out if you're environmentally conscious. The food was still good but single use plastic is a big turn off unfortunately. The explanation given by the waitress was that she couldn't be bothered washing up.

Brilliant! Really good food (awesome pizza) and a great selection. Dog friendly. Toddler friendly (high chair and child options.) friendly staff who did all they could do help. We had a lovely lunch. Comfy sofas too!

A really great pizza, and my father enjoyed his cooked breakfast. By 1.10pm on a January weekday, it was full.
