The Set in Brighton and Hove

Thought we would give this another try after taking our friend on a previous visit and being really embarrassed about the quality of the food. This used to be one of my favourite restaurants in Brighton but now it just feels like a lot of small pieces of average junk food from London Road served one after another at the same price as a fine dining restaurant. Such a shame as was also in a really convenient location.

There’s a lot of ground to cover here. Apologies for my American granddaughter’s accent ! The room is a small intimate place with a laid back vibe and great music. You can download the playlist from the menu. The menu: It would take too long to explain each separate dish of which you get a lot. But thought, care, balance and flavours have gone into each one. Taste buds working overtime to enjoy each delicious mouthful. Highlight for me was Steak bernaise. But to describe it would not do it justice. I’ve been hesitant on purpose as I should let you discover for yourself. Only small criticism might be to make sure you are happy beforehand with the drinks flight. There’s a few that might not suit everyone. Service was impeccable. Cocktails good. Atmosphere very chilled Brighton. This place is an experience and is undoubtedly understated. I spoke with the two owner/chefs. I think they are pretty rock and roll !! … and you may ask yourself….. well ….. how did I get here.

We had the pleasure of dining at the Set on Friday evening having booked a last min night away in Brighton, we had dined at the Set previously when they were located elsewhere but hadn’t been back down since. Being from hospitality I noticed their Michelin bib award recently and decided we should head back for a new visit. I am so pleased we did, the food was simply brilliant, the CBB in one of the course blew my mind... each course was cooked to perfection and each came with something special and unique. I think what sets the Set apart from all the other various good eateries in Brighton is that these guys seem to genuinely care about you the customer, their produce supplier partners and providing the best intimate dining experience possible with attentive service from the front of house team. If you’re thinking of going, book now, support this business - they deserve it.

Only about 16 covers with a really interesting set menu. Good ambience., great food - personally not so sure about the wine flight but will definately be back. Recommendsd

If you love food then this is an absolute must for anyone staying in Brighton or the surrounding areas. My husband and I were absolutely blown away with the food, the lovely staff and atmosphere. We cannot wait to visit again!!

Can’t fault our evening at the set. We went all out and had the accompanying drinks flight. Every course was delicious. Atmosphere great and servers were great. Would highly recommend!

I've visited the Set twice: once in the old location and once at the new premises. Both visits have been truly exceptional.The menu is (I think) 16 separate items served independently (there is no choice - you simply get a set menu, so check if you have any dietary requirements). Each dish is perfectly presented and completely delicious, combining separate (sometimes strange) elements. However, this isn't a pretentious place. The Set manages to deliver extremely high-end dining without the stuffiness. The waiting staff are casual and approachable - I didn't feel like I had to sit up straight or whisper.It's a whole evening and a real treat. It's not cheap - but it's fabulous.

Well what do you say, we arrived to a very discreet top restaurant behind the curtain We were welcomed and went to the garden for pre dinner drinks which were great. We even saw the chef bbq’ing one of the courses. We were then shown to our table, the inside of the restaurant is so cool and great touches of art and style. Well spread out and comfortable. Well, then the taste journey started. It was like a private diners club. There were only maybe another 13 other diners in here. The food was outstanding in presentation and flavour. Yes, there were 15 courses but amazing flavours and we felt satisfied at the end. What an amazing concept. The team were great and we wish them all the best for adding more accolades to their already received ones. Brilliant we will be back.

We visited The Set at their new premises on Preston Road - absolutely perfect from start to finish! One of the best meals we have ever had and the drinks pairing was outstanding too. Lovely staff, great atmosphere, delicious food and good value for money.Will 100% be returning on our next visit to Brighton.

We visited the set restaurant at its new location at Cafe Rust in Preston Road Brighton ans all we can say is that it was quite simply amazing. Amazing food, service and excellent staff.

Visited this restaurant in early June for a special meal as it was my wife's birthday. On arrival from the outside I have to say I was a little concerned as it was draped in long curtains to hide the inside. My doubts subsided as soon as we where greeted by the front of house team. The evening just got better and better with each course providing a surprise. I have to say from the cocktail to the bowl of cereal at the end you could not fault any course. The wow factor had to be the Old Spot Pork Belly - what a creation and a joy to eat. If you have never been here then I would recommend a visit as you wont find food this good in many places.

This place is incredible, such a great find. My lovely husband booked this as our surprise mini-moon and what a treat it was!!Service was also impeccable. Glazed pork belly was an absolute winner. My husband has eaten the lovely truffle pizza even though he dislikes mushrooms lol (it was that good)!We will highly recommend and return soon.

Such an amazing evening. Brilliant service, food was wonderful, music choice was great (hats off to the chef/owner). Provided an excellent vegan menu as well, which felt equally as special as the set menu. Drinks were delicious. Can't recommend enough for a special occasion.

Had a wonderful dinner - with delicious food and excellent service. A four hour indulgence - and the restaurant was able to cater to vegans and omnivores alike! Compliments to the chef. A real treat in central Brighton - very glad it's back open.

Had an absolutely fabulous Sunday set lunch - I normally don’t like going for a roast as they can be hit and miss but this was insane. Only 2 options - meat or veg and then you sit back and relax! Lots of little pots of side dishes come with the meal which all were delicious. I have not been this full in a while! Make sure you visit when you are in Brighton!

The team at The Set were so welcoming and really looked after us brilliantly. We had the Sunday Sharing menu and having thought we would be invited to choose just a couple of items from the menu, it turns out you opt for ‘the vegetarian’ or ‘the meat’ and for either choice you are presented with a whole feast of multiple different plates in that theme. My friend had the chicken, I had the veg, both were excellent. Also a nice ‘bread & spread’ to start, a pudding to share and a canapé style cheese taster to end with. Plus a tasty non alcoholic welcome drink as an added bonus. The setting is lovely - ‘industrial chic’, set just off from the seafront. Highly recommend.

Second review in two years. Family celebration again so decided the Sunday lunch (12-6) would be a good choice. Victorien, the server, was charming and efficient and dealt with our group of 10 effortlessly. The meal was delicious with superb choice of vegetables to share, meat and veggie main choices, little pud and cheese plates, bread with marmite butter and a cocktail to kick things off. Can't wait to go back.

Attended on a Saturday evening to experience the Chef’s Table menu. Everything about the evening was first class. The food was superb, every course packed with flavour and interest. The service was also spot on - Friendly, fun and polite without being too formal or over the top. Finally, the atmosphere was great, a real buzz.Special mention to the 3 chefs who were preparing and cooking in front of us. I’d feel far too pressured if someone was watching me work but they were extremely calm and also took to time to talk about the cooking methods, ingredients used etc.Can’t recommend this place enough and would go back in a heartbeat!

Really good limited menu. Choosing the basic ingredient package is a different and exciting way to go. The pork belly and the duck mains were extremely good. Wines pricey but service and food outstanding.

We went to The Set twice in the last month or so, the second time returning for the special Veganuary menu. Both times the service is really friendly and the food is really nice. Very inventive and wonderful flavours. We enjoyed it very much, and certainly will return. However i must point out, both times we left still a bit hungry. Not even just comfortable, but a bit hungry. In fact on the second occasion we had to drop off at Leons before the bus to get a quick burger. The Set is not cheap, and the food is wonderful as i said, but it needs more. Either an extra course or something more substantial. We are not espcially greedy or big eaters, but expect to leave satisfied. So please take this as constructive criticism.

Holy smoke this place was good! We decided to have 2 starters each so we were able to share the full starter menu. We were absolutely blown away by the butternut squash, almond and miso. The chicken liver with crispy chicken skin was equally mind blowing. Our mains were pork belly and duck with rhubarb. What’s exceptional about this place was that you simply could not cook this type of dish for yourself at home at the Osman Peach residence. Each mouthful was quite simply a taste explosion. My first time at the Set restaurant. We had a fantastic meal which was an absolute taste sensation. So lovely to see the waiter Christian take real pride in his work and paired our drinks exceptionally with everything we ate. Will certainly be back and will recommend to friends. We had a fabulous meal at The Set whilst staying at The Artist Residence in Brighton. The food looked and tasted fantastic and was made even more enjoyable by sitting at the kitchen bar and watching the wonderful chefs working at close quarters. The 3 course meal with bonus starter snacks was incredibly good value and the perfect finishing touch was a bag of home made sweets given to us as we were leaving. Thank you to all the attentive staff for such a lovely evening

I’m new to Brighton and this was the restaurant that seemed to get the most recommendations off friends.

I took my boyfriend to the Set for the chefs table for his birthday. I paid £65 a head and was blown away by the service and the quality of food.

We ate again at The Set last week. The restaurant has a great ambience, totally in keeping with Artists Residence Hotel in which it is situated. The staff are not only extremely efficient but very warm and friendly without being intrusive. Their

What a fantastic find, this intimate little restaurant is an absolute gem. The ambiance, staff and food are all excellent, could not fault anything. We went for my daughter’s birthday, who is vegan, the special vegan menu was superb with a selection of five courses all beautifully presented and tasting sublime. The menu we chose from was varied, with something for all tastes, again the presentation and taste were sublime. The knowledgeable staff were friendly and helpful, explaining each dish and recommending things they thought we would like, the wine choice we were recommended was excellent. This really is a restaurant to put on your go to list, we had a lovely evening, we left feeling very special and knowing we will definitely go back. We then headed down the stairs behind the book case,...where we went to the secret little bar, serving wonderful cocktails and mock tails, definitely worth a visit, it finished the night off perfectly.

Honestly lovely staff. Arrived at 8.05, order taken at 8.55. Amuse Bouche arrived at 9.25. Tasty but tiny. Starters arrived at 9.55. Mine was lovely, same dish for my wife was much bigger and undercooked. Quickly replaced but still hard and not as tasty.

It was our first visit to this restaurant. Such a good value for money. Food and cocktails was great, staff kind and knowledgeable. We could see the chefs working in the open kitchen. It is a set menu, so you can choose a starter, a main and a dessert or just 2 of them. The cherry on top was no service charge at all. We will definitely be back if have the opportunity.

I don’t often write reviews and never bad ones but I really feel these guys could do with some feedback. We popped in for a drink recently on the way home from a dinner in town. While the town was busy, it’s no wonder why their bar was empty. There was only one other guest at the bar with us. The barman seemed to speak weirdly fast and couldn’t even say some words properly.. not sure on this matter really..

I'd been wanting to go here for some time and last week was it! Excellent food and service throughout. Mackerel starter and lamb main courses were superb. The only thing that didn't really work for me was the grated cheese and crumpet but that was just personal taste.

From start to finish we enjoyed our dinner at Set. The waiting staff were friendly and efficient. We had a discussion about choice of wines and our server obviously knew all about the wines on offer and was able to advise.

Had the 10 course chefs table menu. Absolutely perfect. Cannot fault the food, ambience, or service. Will sell everything I own to eat here when next visiting Brighton if necessary.

Came for brunch with some old friends I’ve never been here before. I ordered the Welsh rarebit, very tasty , lovely bread and nice strong cheddar. Good service.

We booked the Chefs Table Tasting menu and it was absolutely fantastic. From the moment we arrived the service and hospitality of the team was perfect. They made us feel so welcome and the teams personalities and humor shone through.

El restaurante Set realmente tiene ahora opciones limitadas de menú fijo. ¡La opción de menú fijo alguna vez fue simplemente fantástica! We had a late lunch and were offered the set menu. I didn’t expect this after looking at the website but it looked interesting. I had the kohlrabi starter, it was ok and very small. The hake main was lovely but again very small. My partner enjoyed his duck starter and pork main but I had buy him chips afterwards. We were served some little nibbles to begin with which were very tasty. So all in all it was good but doesn’t fill a builder.

Very Brighton ... views across Regency Square to the sea and the i360. Small but varied menu with more than enough options for vegetarians. Interesting tastes - all very enjoyable.

Called and booked a few days before. easy communications. great breakfast with some really interesting ideas and tastes. My wife, whose Birthday it was, greatly impressed.

We were staying in the hotel and pre booked a table to have dinner on a Monday night. Super helpful and friendly staff that had great knowledge of the food and the wine. Excellent options that you may Theo I ate unusual combinations but ALL work perfectly. Comprehensive wine list that gives you plenty of options and the staff are very happy to advise. Thank You

Popped in to The Set in the hopes that we could get squeezed in for a Saturday birthday dinner celebration for 2 - despite our foolishness of not booking & the restaurant being all booked up, Christian (who was playing host, somm, waiting staff, all around everything) managed to squeeze us in at the bar - which is always our fave spot in the house so we couldn’t have been happier!

Although I booked the table informing one of us was vegan I was very disappointed to find no VG nibbles or sides. The only VG main course was tomato tart which had to go solo due to no suitable sides followed by tart tatin, two pastry dishes with no alternative was very disappointing. We did enjoy our meals but I felt bad for my daughter who had no choice whatsoever. We did ask if any of the sides were vegan (bbq sweet corn surely can’t be difficult to convert back to VG?) and were told by the waiter that they could ‘probably’ do something but he wasn’t very convincing and didn’t attempt to find out. My daughter has been keen to try this restaurant for a while but doesn’t like being labelled and is reluctant to ask questions and make a fuss but surely in a restaurant such as this it should be fairly standard to offer an alternative and they did know she was coming.

Great food, wonderful service and they all really took care of my two-year old, who was fascinated with the kitchen. Would definitely go again!

We have been here a few times for special occasions over the years but today was terrible. We were squashed in between two other couples. The wine wasn’t cold the food was mediocre. My wife had a vegetarian main meal that had uncooked pastry. When she told the waiter (who was rude) he made here feel very embarrassed and ashamed at making a complaint. Then one of the chefs gave us daggers and made us feel very unwelcome.

What an amazing place! The food is absolutely outstanding, we tried the 10 courses menu this time and it was tremendously delicious. The staff is so thoughtful. We will definitely go back a third time!

We dined at 'The Set' on Monday evening and we were blown away by our experience. The food was simply outstanding, the service incredible and the ambiance fantastic. Bravo to the team of chefs working there for such an amazing menu, we all loved every part of the food we ate. The 2 staff serving us were simply charming, knowledgable about the foods and wines and engaged with us all evening. A great team working here created a lovely evening for us. Reservé a toda prisa para la celebración sin investigación previa, pero no me decepcionó. Menú bien definido con buenas opciones de carne / pescado / verduras. Todo tenía un sabor exquisito y algunas cosas, por ejemplo, sorbete de tomate, helado de cacao, simplemente te quitan el aliento.

We were excited to come here for our anniversary and was a special treat. After doing quite a lot of research online we decided on The Set as the menu seemed innovative but still food you want to eat. I don't expect the menu online to be the same as in the restaurant but considering the menu said it was the most recent it was slightly disappointing to have a very different menu in the restaurant. I'm happy to pay more for amazing food but unfortunately this didn't really hit the spot. We had oysters to start which were amazing. We weren't overly hungry (thankfully) so didn't have a starter. The mains were incredibly small for what you paid for- again I'm happy to pay if they are amazing but they were just okay. You have to pay for a side. I had the cod which was so small. Even some sauteed potatoes would have made me enjoy the dish a whole lot more. We decided to have dessert especially as I had seen the ecclair and marshmallows on the website that look awesome so I was expecting something similar. As it turned out again they were over expensive and nothing special- just different textures of the same chocolate and really rich. It just turned into a slip in the end. The waitresses were friendly. It was just disappointing to come to Brighton especially for the restaurant and leave feeling hungry and underwhelmed.

In an unassuming town house, we weren’t sure what to expect, but The Set was simply outstanding.

From the very 1st contact to the last goodbye this restaurant went out of its way to create one of the most uncomfortable experiences I have had when eating out in many a year .

As we were staying at the Artist Residence, we decided to grab breakfast at The Set restaurant. The restaurant is really beautiful, with quirky decor and unique art pieces. We were seated quickly and were able to chose our own table which I think is always really nice touch. The waitress was super lovely and really attentive.

Had a fantastic lunch with family. Service from Daisy was excellent and the food divine.

Relaxed casual dining done very well. Innovative dishes using local seasonal produce cooked to perfection. Big flavours but excellently judged Off the beat and track but enhances it, this is a hidden treasure. Check it out!

We liked it.....and want to visit again,yummy cocktails to start us off and then great tasting food.....tripe and fennel rosti thingy to start and then brill cod as mains and the best tiramisu I’ve had in ages...plus great friendly service (I’ll forgive them the wine ice bucket coming after there was about a quarter left) I hope they bring back the rhubarb eclair as it will give me an excuse to return.

We came here for our anniversary and it felt very special from the minute we walked in! All of the dishes were very well thought out and absolutely delicious.The cocktails were some of the best we’ve had in Brighton and the wine list is hard to beat! All the front of house staff were friendly and knowledgeable, 10/10 to The Set and thank you for such a good night!

My second visit was perhaps not as enthusing as the first, but still we had a perfectly pleasant lunch here.

We stayed at the Artist Residence for the second time and had breakfast here again as it was great last time and this time it was even better ! Had a week in Brighton and I tried all the top rated breakfast places on trip advisor during my stay and most were very good but The Set was definitely the best for us! My Pork on toast (pig cheek, bacon, home made black pudding, fried egg, gem lettuce) was the best breakfast I’ve had in a very long time and my wife’s full English was excellent too.

We enjoyed the set lunch today - cuttlefish, white asparagus; pig cheek, cavolo nero, broad beans, charred little gem; amaretto biscuits and miso marshmallow. An Aperol spritz, small carafe and some coffee. Perfect.

This place is all about the food and the service the decor is quirky and the place has a very down to earth feel. No White tablecloths here but natural rustic up cycled wooden tables and outdoor terrace graffiti art. Iconic Brighton . From the small menu we all had oysters with Apple and creamy horseradish. The ceviche was excellent, then the 3 cuts of lamb sharing platter from our local farm, with sides of broccoli and dauphinoise potatoes. I don’t usually manage to fit in a desert if I’ve had starter and main. However the portions were definitely on the small side. The good news is that this allowed me to order the trifle which was delightful with its hint of coconut cream. The others were very complimentary of the Key lime pie. All six of us were delighted with our food, washed down with bottles of champagne, Chenin blanc then nice reds. We had a couple of wine buffs in the group and they certainly were not disappointed with the wines . The service was excellent. Top tip I can give is to manage expectations on the portion sizes. It’s quality not quantity. We finished eating lunch at 5pm and by 9pm we were all hungry again. I’d wanted to try this restaurant for quite some time and although I usually like to try new ones I will definitely be returning to The Set.

Absolutely delicious breakfast at The Set last weekend with my little family. I ordered the Veggie breakfast. I’m not a vegetarian but just liked the look of it. Was absolutely delicious. Great combination of lovely ingredients. Full of flavour & presented beautifully.

This is an exceptional restaurant, the menu is short, but certainly doesn’t disappoint; it seems quite understated until you ask for the explanation of dishes, that’s when the ‘WOW’ comes! We opted for the cuttlefish & monkfish to start, opting to share them ( Christian’s suggestion). Both dishes were delicious, the cuttlefish being our favourite, it was heavenly.

Amazing food, wonderful service, and a great vibe make this place truly special. We absolutely love this place and can't wait to be back! If you have the opportunity, treat yourself to the Chefs table experience. Highly recommended!

Visited today for family party for 60 th birthday ..

WOW! Went with me husband and adult kids to celebrate my husbands birthday and it was absolutely amazing! I have been to many Michelin standard restaurants and this one is so close to that!! Imaginative, quirky and bohemian accompanied by great service! We will DEFINITELY be back!

We went to this restaurant when it first opened in 2016 and really loved it, so when we went back to Brighton this weekend ( 11th May 2019) we thought we would go back to see if it was still the same high standard. We were not disappointed at all. The service is excellent and the food really is something quite special and at reasonable prices too. If we lived in Brighton, we would come here all the time, it really is that good. It so nice to find a restaurant that has kept its standards from opening, so many don't these days.

Been looking to go for a long time and was very excited. Unfortunately it was not the experience we were all anticipating. The service was slow, had to remind the waitress multiple times about drinks orders and extra cutlery. Would have completely dismissed all of it if the food blew us away but it didn’t. The portions were very small which is ok if it was full of flavour and packs a punch, but sadly again, that was not the case. Little things like the crumpet being burnt and turned over and giving beef fat mayo to a known vegetarian is just not what you expect when you think you’re attending an evening of gastronomic delights.

What a find! I’ve stayed in the Artist Residence before but have never had supper here. Every course was a delight, the flavours were delicate and intelligently balanced Friendly service on a quiet Sunday night

Small menu but some unusual dishes and food combinations, which need some explanation.

Visited for breakfast this morning and it was just brilliant. Both my boyfriend and myself chose ‘The Set breakfast’ but added hash browns and a side of avacado to share. The bacon is insane and the beans have a smokey flavour which is delicious. My boyfriend said his coffee was lovely and the tea I had was leaves rather than a bag which adds a nice touch.

We have visited The Set a few times for a full mean and always enjoyed the experience. Never thought to call in for a casual lunch snack before but will do this again. Very casual and laid back approach and a great selection of excellent small eats to choose from. Definitely recommend giving this a try.

We were having a getaway in Brighton and decided to book for breakfast. This place inside the Artist and Residence Hotel is a true gem. The staff is lovely and looked after us really well. The breakfast menu is so so good and the prices are insane. Really good value for money. We will definitely come back for a night sleep and dinner this time.

I have been here countless times over the last few years with my friends and family and it's just wonderful. I always feel like I am really cared for and my experience is really valued. The food is always so fantastic and I love seeing how much the chefs love their craft and are always pushing themselves to try new things and outdo themselves. It's great that all their ingredients are sourced as locally as possible and I like the chic but low-key decor, it's not too fancy or try-hard. The coffee is great too, I especially love coming for brunch/breakfast. Their cocktails and wine selection is really good as well!!

Fuimos al restaurante The Set hoy para el almuerzo. Los cócteles eran buenos, el servicio era excelente, la comida era fenomenal. Pedimos pan para que no tuviéramos que dejar ni una gota de la salsa en el tazón. El rape glaseado tenía sabores increíbles, pero para mí el plato vegetariano de nudi con boloñesa hispi fue el elegido. Volviendo lo antes posible, con los dedos cruzados todavía está en el menú.

I've visited The Set a few times lately - for brunch and dinner, but also for a little snack with a cocktail before dinner. Without exception, the service is always incredible - friendly, welcoming and knowledgable, with the perfect wine or cocktail to suit the food.

Te recomiendo que lo pruebes aquí. Tenían opciones veganas y fue increíble!

Visitamos en un jueves por la noche, gran bullicio y agradable lugar. Lugar muy guay pero supongo que Brighton es.

What an amazing brunch find! Wonderful selection of tea - I believe I had the peach and pine one and it was just perfect. The food was also all so fantastic. I had a combination of ham/leeks/kale with a poached egg on top, served with soldiers to dip with. My husband had ox cheek with a some kind of pickled root on top. Both were unbelievable good. Our service was also very good even with it being busy on Mothering Sunday. Look forward to going back to try the dinner menu and to brunch again.

Teníamos muchas expectativas de The Set y esta será nuestra primera y última visita. Después de leer un montón de buenas críticas sobre el menú fijo, nos decepcionó mucho que nos dijeran cuando nos sentamos que se habían quedado sin muchos de los platos. Después de la investigación, teníamos muchas ganas de probar el rape, que ya habían vendido. Su excusa fue que el Día de la Madre está más ocupado que la mayoría de los días. No es una excusa cuando es el único plato de pescado en el menú y debe esperar estar más ocupado el día de la madre. Los entrantes fueron buenos pero no memorables. Los platos principales estaban lejos de ser interesantes. La costilla de res se servía con lo que parecía un trozo de repollo de un recipiente y un hachís empapado sin sabor. Luego nos preguntaron si queríamos postre, pero luego nos dijeron que se habían quedado sin 2 de 5 opciones! Los cócteles eran geniales, pero el vino era cuestionable. Realmente necesitan mejorar su juego para competir con la calidad y los platos innovadores que puedes conseguir en cualquier otro lugar de Brighton. El servicio era muy Kurt y antipático y el precio era exorbitante por la calidad de la comida. ¡Es una pena que la ubicación y la decoración del lugar sean brillantes, pero se deben hacer algunos cambios importantes para que este negocio sobreviva!

Anticipating a busy restaurant on Mothering Sunday we were very impressed that the Set were able to accommodate an extra 2 guests at our table when we called to ask earlier that morning

Fabulous day, delicious family brunch. Interesting variations on brunch traditions. Service was friendly and efficient.

Delicious food, relaxed service, great cocktails. And all at a very reasonable price. Will be back soon!

Having read many reviews we arrived full of high expectations.
