The best Italian in Barnsley and surrounding area

The third time at the Secret Italian. It is advisable to book well in advance otherwise you probably cannot get in. There is a set menu consisting of anti pasti, pasta, main meal with side and dessert. The cost is currently £35.00 per person and is excellent value for what you are served and you also need to bear in mind that you do not have to pay for expensive wines and beers as you are invited to bring your own. The Secret Italian do not stock drinks (except water) so make sure you have your own. My faves are the anit pasti (meat, mozarella, meatballs etc) and also theTiramisu. Margaret is the ameniable host with a couple of ladies working hard in the kitchen,. Everything is spotlessly clean and there is enough parking for every diner in the building. Dining time is 7pm and you'll be finshed at approx 9.30-10pm. All in all nothing to moan about. A great experience.

Honestly one of the best hidden gems I've ever been to. The food, service and atmosphere are all amazing. Margaret and the staff are so welcoming and caring. 2nd time we've been and it doesn't dissapoint. We can't wait to come again.

What a delicious meal! 6 of us from Hoyland Readers' group went 13/12/23. It was my second time, the others hadn't been before so I was a bit nervous. Shouldn't have been. They were all delighted. Mags is a brilliant host and the girls in the kitchen work hard feeding us. Thank you. Now I'm intent on bringing the family!! Annie xx

Been here quite a few times, and still going back , the hosts Margaret and Jan are very friendly, nothing is too much trouble, the food is tiramisu is to die for

Superb food probably the best I have had for years. The chef is fantastic all the flavours just flowed together. Great decor, spotlessly clean and great service. The fact that they are booked up for months speaks volumes. Thank you for a fantastic night. Update 2.3.22 new chef, second time we have had the pleasure of her cooking, fantastic,very different menu to last twice we have eaten at The Secret Italian. Can't wait to go again. Thank you very much. Returned 15th November 23. Superb evening meal the fixed menu has been tweaked since our last visit as good if not improved. The new layout is lovely. The staff were lovely very very friendly. Love the Secret Italian.

Lovely experience, including for vegetarians. There's certainly value for money in terms of how much food you get. The veggie meatballs were AMAZING and the tiramisu was the proper Italian version, I can't believe it was not made by an Italian! Highly recommended if you're looking for a satisfactory meal and an authentic Italian trattoria experience. A hidden gem in Barnsley. Don't hesitate to try it!

I heard about this little place from a relative, he suggested a visit. So we went in, astounding! The food was all freshly prepared, wonderful, authentic Italian, I have traveled Italy from the top to bottom, it took Me back. I will definitely be returning. You definitely need a big appetite! Margaret and her Team are so very welcoming. Give it a go.

Fantastic friendly service! Very intimate venue with only around 5 tables (so book well in advance of your visit!). We enjoyed a gorgeous 5 course set menu for £35pp. Bring your own drinks (no corkage fees). Good for food allergies and dietary requirements. Can pay by cash, card or contactless. Very limited on street car parking outside or 5min walk from multi-storey. Would highly recommend a visit for any lover of good home cooked Italian cuisine. Don’t let the tiramisu put you off if you aren’t a fan of coffee! It’s absolutely delicious and the hint of coffee is very mild.

This is unlike any restaurant you've visited before and more like being invited to dinner by an Italian family. One sitting, no menu, bring your own drinks and have a thoroughly wonderful experience. Not a "fine dining"place but lovely Italian cooking. Very few covers so book well in advance, you'll not be disappointed.

First time we’ve eaten here and not disappointed! Fantastic yet simple food, welcoming staff who took the time to chat after our meal and give us some background and discussed the ingredients in detail. I said how I was not a massive chicken fan (though it was really good) and was told to ask beforehand as it could be tailored more to my tastes. Desert was a highlight tasted even better than it looked, we will be back here again!

I experienced the secret Italian last night, one word PERFECTION. The food was amazing, i am self confessed fussy with food but enjoyed every mouthful and there was many. The food is plentiful, fresh and full of flavour. The staff were all lovely, efficient and welcoming. Thank you so much for a lovely evening, credit to you all.

Me and my partner were lucky enough to get a cancellation. I'd heard about it and read the reviews so we were looking forward to it and we were not disappointed! My partner is a vegetarian and it's a set menu so he was a bit apprehensive. However, he enjoyed every single dish and so did I...could not fault anything! The dessert is a Tiramisu and I've never been a fan but I have to say that was one of the best desserts I've ever had! The service was outstanding from start to finish,especially Jana who cooked and spoke to every customer in between...she is amazing!

We went to The Secret Italian last night 2nd nov 2022, wow! We had an amazing evening the food was so delicious the staff were very experienced and super friendly. This is a hidden gem. We will definately be returning very soon and recommending this beautiful place to everyone I know. The owner, Maggie, is such a lovly friendly lady who cooked us 9 superb dishes.

This was my first visit and it wont be my last.This small hidden gem of a restaurant serves authentic Italian food, cooked to perfection and with love.A daily 5 course menu using the freshest ingredients, pasta and Olive Oil from Italy, Claudia is one of the best Italian chefs!The restaurant is small and intimate and feels like you are in an Italian kitchen eating food like "Mama makes"Too many highlights of the evening but the homemade Tiramisu- heavenly!I shall certainly be back, Bellissimo

What a gem of a restaurant, excellent food and service the best Italian I have been to anywhere including the ones in Italy .It was a 7 course set menu it everything was absolutely amazing.

Cerebrated my 60 th birthday with family and friends...the chef and host Claudia makes everyone feel special and welcome . The food that comes out of her small kitchen is a genuine Italian treat.from the meatballs to the sausages and ribs and selection of pasta dishes this is the best Italian you will ever find.., Thank you again Claudia for making my 60 th special I now understand why you have to book months in advance Cannot wait to return !

First meal out in 12 months, and it couldn’t have been better.Fantastic food prepared by the simply brilliant Claudia, how she manages to produce such mouthwatering dishes in a kitchen the size of a large cupboard is amazing.Anti pasti of olives, salami, mozzarella bruschetta, beans, meatballs, and sausages.Followed by chicken with potato’s and vegetables, spaghetti carbonara, and fish, all topped of with a delicious tiramisu.

Will you open post Covid? Hopeful customer 😁🙏 we are really looking forward to making our second visit as and when allowed.

Went for a birthday celebration, first time for us but won't be the last, absolutely fantastic food, very friendly host and amazing food, be warned don't eat all day before going! The food was fresh tasty and plenty of it. Claudia is a superb host and chef. Guaranteed you won't be disappointed. Plan well in advance as it is fully booked most days and weekends.

Absolutely amazing authentic Italian food. You wouldn’t get that amount of food for £25 a head anywhere else and when we was full we could take the rest home with us for the next day. Amazing food and amazing atmosphere. Absolutely full to the brim. We had about 6 courses for £25 each and all was simple but really really tasty food. And to top it off Claudia the chef is just simply the cream in the tiramisu! She made our evening. Can’t wait to go again bit have to wait 6 months ah well will be worth the wait

We came here for our anniversary family get together. Was well worth the wait.My wife and I had been the year before and wanted to come back with the family as we enjoyed the food and hospitality.We told the fam to expect to be fed and that its a set menu from the gods. Flavours and amount of food was unbelievable. Everyone enjoyed it even the vegetarian. The carnivors that were here enjoyed the sausages and the meatballs. The chicken we had fell of the bone. Pasta course was delicious, no over powering sauces. Good home cooked food. Lastly the tiramisu was to die for, was nothing like a shop bought one. Our hostess was brilliant. This was our second time here (first was before Covid and second booked in during Covid was obviously cancelled) and as before, we could not fault a single thing! All safety precautions taken; temperature checked before we went in, hand gel given, hand gel on tables and asked to use regularly especially before and after using the toilet. Food was amazing as before, 5 courses with enough to fill a giant! Brought enough home to feed us for tomorrow as well. So friendly service. How one person can manage all this is just unbelievable. Cannot wait to visit again. Secret Italian, you are just amazing! Xx

Been here three times now and all I can say is, this is the closest you will get to being the guest of a true Italian home.The food is traditional home cooked, the meal is set but you will not be disappointed at all. Whatever this lady produces you will want to eat trust me.So warm and welcoming and you could literally sit there with your partner/group and chat away at ease.I recently went to a well regarded pub in the area with friends and felt rushed, unwelcomed and ripped off. This place has it right which is why it is so popular and always busy.

After all rave reviews was disappointed.thought it would be a little different but after sampling italian food in Italy couldn't understand what everyone raves about to be honest.

Food was lovely, very generous serving sizes, a beautiful mix of traditional Italian meals. My husband and I had a great night, it was unique in the fact that there is no menu, you get what is served and we loved that. We have booked again and will look forward to our second evening dining with Claudia

Interesting setting, in small business park, very snug interior, great interaction with hosts.The food is wonderful, and just keeps on coming, everything cooked to perfection, doggy bags for what you can't manage, after raving about tiramisu, was given a portion to take home, so enjoyed again following day.We will return, definitely worth the wait in booking.

So many people have raved about this place and visited so when it was suggested we go for a meal with the bridal party before the wedding I couldn’t wait to try it. It really is an authentic Italian experience! Compact inside so great for a large (ish) group and you get the room to yourself! You bring your own drinks and alcohol which makes it so much easier to manage the bill at the end as everyone pays the same. We started with a mixture of tapas type starters. Quite a few different meats and veg and olives etc. For the course after there were two large bowls of pasta. Carbonara and a veggie pasta for the vegetarians in our party. I didn’t realise after this we still have another course to go! We had chicken with these cubed potatoes (probably the best potatoes I’ve eaten)! Any food that was left over was packaged up for any of the party to take home which mean the experience even better cause I enjoyed the food for the following two meals the next day. To finish we had tiramisu, which I was unsure about as I don’t like coffee but it really was amazing. I really couldn’t fault anything about the evening and I can’t wait to visit again in a couple of months for my mums 60th. An amazing place in Barnsley which I would 100% recommend booking if you can!

Took an age to get a table, 10 weeks from booking to get in, but was well worth the wait. The restaurant is very small but don't be put of by this, and most of the pictures on Tripadvisor actually make it look bigger than it is! I think it's probably the smallest restaurant we've ever been in, and certainly one of the best. We were greeted by a very pleasant lady and given a choice of 2 tables, it turned out she was the chef, waitress and washer-up, with some help from James. She presented us with olives while we waited which were quickly followed by sausages, antipasti (2 cheeses and salami) and a superb bruschetta. We were then given a small break before our spaghetti arrived, this was served from the pan at our table. The final two main dishes were oven cooked chicken and fish with roast potatoes. The desert was a delightful tiramisu. The whole evening flew by and the food was wonderful, there's no set menu and you get what's fresh that day and it does show in the quality. It also means every course/dish is a lovely surprise when it arrives.Don't go expecting pizza and spaghetti bolognaise etc as I doubt this would ever be an option.We enjoyed the evening so much we booked again to take some friends but will have to wait until February to share the experience with them.

What an incredible place. Tiny but perfectly formed. The food is the star of the show here! Absolutely incredible freshly cooked dishes that just keep on coming to the table. All our group of 9 were blown away by the food and wonderful friendly service. The last dish of the evening Claudia’s homemade Tiramisu was quite frankly the best dessert I have ever eaten. A group of friends and I ate here, taking up the whole restaurant. The food was absolutely amazing!!! It was anything but a light meal, but that was part of the joy. It was large portions of fantastic flavor and great quality. As the food is cooked fresh each night, we also got doggy bags to take the leftovers home in. I loved this because, not only did it prevent food wastage, but also meant we got to enjoy it again the day after :-)They serve a set menu, which varies depending on availability of produce etc, so you can't really choose dishes, but they were ever so accommodating to us with dietary requirements and preferences. As we booked the whole restaurant, it was quite easy to do this in advance. It was such good customer service.The restaurant is very small, with the kitchen pretty much in the same room, so it isn't 'fancy', however, having been to Italy a couple of times, it is a very authentic experience. I felt fully emerged when we were there.It was BYOB so be aware of that in advance. The restaurant is good value anyway, but not having the uplift on drinks makes it very affordable.

Visited here last night with some friends I don’t see often enough and it was perfect! It surpassed expectations in both the food that was served and the experience the small setting afforded. The experience is one of the things that makes this place unique- especially here in Barnsley! Having the place to ourselves, being sat around one table and passing the delicious food around really made the experience more sociable and wholesome! Excellent for catching up. The food tasted like what we had enjoyed on travels in Italy, relatively simple but so tasty and plentiful! It was excellent value. Thank you, hope to return soon!

This is a tiny little back street restaurant with an authentic Italian atmosphere. We were served a variety of dishes, all of which were stunning and were encouraged to try them all. (We were given doggy bags of what we couldn’t eat). Everything was cooked to perfection and tasted amazing. Excellent service too - we’d not realised it wasn’t licensed so the owner nipped off and fetched a bottle of wine for us and despite being busy, the owner and chef made time to share their story and make us feel welcome. Overall a truly wonderful experience, can’t wait to return!

Claudia was absolutely amazing ..... what a credit to the restaurant her food was just perfect I’ve never tasted such fresh home cooked Italian food .It’s the smallest restaurant I’ve ever been in but the food is up there with the best food we have tasted in a long time . Value for money is an under statement we had to be rolled out of the restaurant we ate that much We would definitely recommend secret Italian if you want fantastic food and a very good price and a lovely host .

We all loved our evening here! Small and intimate place with only a few tables, it did feel like you were in a little place in Italy.The food was basic, lots of it and all cooked and served very well.Its bring your own alcohol, and there is, no corkage charge. The chef and waitress were so friendly and hospitable, it's such a cosy and romantic plac to eat and chat. If you want posh dining with fancy extras then this isn't for you.If you are up for a relaxed evening to chat and enjoy lovely Italian food and feel very full afterwards then give it a try! We will def go back.

Literally the best italian food I have ever eaten! The restraunt is beautiful inside, and has a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Nothing is hidden away and you can watch the chef prepare your food for you, the portion sizes are huge and everything is cooked to perfection. The tiramisu is to die for and I don't even usually like it! I honestly have nothing but amazing things to say it's a fantastic place.

This is the smallest restaurant I have ever been in, but got to be one of the two best I have visited. It's the type you would search for and love to find in a small village in Tuscany, where a local lady cooks wonderful local dishes for a few friends. There is no pretentious menu to wade through, I had no idea what we were being served until it arrived. We had about 8 or 10 dishes in all, lost count; and every one was to die for. After the third dish, I asked if I could book again, the first available date was mid January next year. 5 months away. I got in quick. Claudia, the owner and cook is wonderful, typical effusive Italian lady and a brilliant cook. Can't wait to go back.

I visited this establishment with a group of friends. It is a BYO alcohol establishment. We were treated to copious dishes - cheese and salami, italian sausages, italian meat ball, olives, bruschetta, bread and oil (all as starters). Spaghetti carbonara (proper italian), spaghetti with tomato, chilli and garlic. Roast potato cubes with chicken followed by fish and finally a dish of filo pastry and broccoli. To end the meal wue were served tiramisu (minus the alcohol). All that for £25 - freshly cooked by Claudia and James with the caveat you can take home whatever you cannot eat. How this guys can turn a profit is bewildering but this is somewhere anyone seeking proper italian food should visit.

I came here with 4 friends one Friday night. What a find!!! It is a really small place and apart from us 5 there were only 6 additional diners. I loved that since it was really informal.James was really friendly and he got us seated and then opened our byo drinks. Next the food started arriving and it was delicious. The portions were massive. My favorite was the meatballs, truly fantastic and the pasta carbonara, best ever!Claudia is a real gem and a great personality. She pops to all the tables regularly and tells you what she has made and also encourages you to eat more. We left absolutely stuffed full and with all the left over food packed up to eat later at home.Just loved everything about this place and I highly recommend it.

The food is fantastico, I have never eaten so much food and I am still bloated like a pig, if you are on a diet this is not the place for you. I will skip breakfast this morning, . What's more at £35 pounds a head it is very cheap. I read a one star review saying it was expensive, not for a private dining experience its a bargain with a personal service, Do not eat all day if book this place,

Celebrated a 40th with a family group of varying ages. The food was amazing and so was Claudia. The Tiramisu was sooooo nice. If you want home cooked food in intimate surroundings this is for you. Don’t forget to take your own wine.

Visited this fabulous little restaurant with my fiancé. Great atmosphere, Italian decor, and low level Italian music throughout the night. Claudia is so passionate, friendly, and ensures everyone’s needs are met. It is taverna style with four tables in the restaurant. All guests are really friendly!!My fiancé is vegetarian and there is lots of options - at least five courses! We had An anti pasti course with meats, olives, cheeses... just beautiful! Bruschetta, Italian sausage for starters... amazing!!!! Spaghetti carbonara and asparagus spaghetti for mains did not disappoint...followed by fish, chicken, and potatoes!!! Definitely will not leave this place hungry. We even got to take leftovers home! The tiramisu is to die for!!!! With food like this we can see why this place is in demand and has a lengthy waiting list. It’s great value for money and bring your own alcohol. All this food for £18pp - we cant wait to come again. This place is really amazing, ended up here by chance midweek after searching TA for local restaurants.After 5 mins walk we were greeted by James. The place was buzzing with atmosphere and freshly cooking food smelt amazing.Claudia made you feel at home immediately, flying round serving plate after plate of beautiful traditional Italian dishes until you are bursting! We enjoyed a mid week night out here at the secret Italian. We had been trying to book a table after hearing reviews and we were not disappointed. The food is authentic and like another reviewer said it is like eating in a friends home. Claudia was amazing as was James. Really friendly and wanting you to enjoy your evening. We have managed to book a private dining for my 40th for 14 people in a few weeks time and we can't wait. Ideal place to have a family meal.

What an amazing place to eat , very small can seat up to 14 (12 is better) , it’s like going to an Italian friends house for dinner , it’s so friendly with the cook and 1 lovely waitress , the food is just ... We had such a fantastic evening celebrating my birthday on Saturday. The food was authentic, and indeed plentiful. We did not want the night to end as we were having such a wonderful time. We all send a big thank you to James and Claudia for making my special birthday the best so far. Please make a reservation for your own celebration as you will not be disappointed.

This really is an Italian escape and it wasn’t until I stepped back outside when I realised I was still in Barnsley. We visited the secret Italian as a party of 13 for a 60th birthday and what can I say everything was exceptional. The food was all homemade by the lovely Italian chef and what can I say it was delicious! Both members of staff couldn’t do enough for us and were both so lovely. I think we will all definitely be back.

A lovely atmosphere, very tasty, authentic food and fantastic value for money. 13 of us went to celebrate my husband's 60th and it was the perfect place to be. We could not have asked for better hospitality, more delicious food or better service. Thank you so much. One of our guests has Italian family and she commented that she never thought she'd find anywhere that cooked proper Italian food but she finally has. The tirimsu was to die for. Claudia, the lady who makes the delicious dishes, was wonderful.

What a warm and friendly welcome we had. Who would have thought that what was once the smallest cafe we had ever been to would turn into such a wonderful italian experience. The food was amazing and different dishes just kept on coming. Cheese and meats olives, meatballs (which were perfect)Lasagna, brushetta, potatoes, chicken. Claudia is an amazing cook and the food just tasted so much better than other italians we have dined with over the years. We will definately be back, if we can get a booking! You will nred to book months in advance to visit on a friday or saturday night, already booked up for most of this year.

This is a very small restaurant with only one table. Therefore, the service, provided by two waitresses is faultless. We had a seven course meal, predominately pasta based, with a main course of belly pork and chicken. The food was fantastic quality and we certainly ate way too much. The restaurant is not licenced and so you take your own booze which keeps the bill down. There were seven in our party which was comfortable. I would suggest no more than eight people attend or you will be squashed.

First time visit. I went to this place with friends. It can be difficult to find if you don’t know the areaIt’s only a small place. 3 tables to seat about 12 people, it did feel a bit cramped but the atmosphere was good / set menu. The food is exellent and reasonably priced, friendly and attentive staff, Will definitely revisit

First visit to the Secret Italian, this for lunch on a Saturday and won’t be the last!!!Small and unassuming, once in you feel like you have been transported into an authentic Italian kitchen. Small yes but that only adds to the experience of eating here and sampling the dishes freshly prepared by Claudina who works tireless to cook you real Italian cuisine.Cheese and olives were on the table to start and this was swiftly followed by bruschetta and meatballs to start, with the option to have more made available.The mains then consisted of spaghetti carbonara, chicken thighs, potatoes and fish, all of which was amazing.Plenty of food, all so moreish but you have to leave room for the homemade Tiramisu which not being a favourite of mine, was delicious. Hard to get a table, especially evenings but definitely worth seeking out if a table is available. Lovely experience, great food and amazing cook and the price was great value too coming in at £35 for the two of us.

After reading the reviews, I booked in December for February & it was really worth the wait! Claudia & James really made our night enjoyable, gorgeous food & great service. Bruschetta and sausage with tomato, olive & cheese to start followed by Tortellini, chicken, fish & potatoes. Finishing off with a beautifully made tiramisu. The restaurant is very cosy, seating about 12 people in total but it seemed to work very well. I will definitely be going back again, Claudia is a great chef & host along with James rolling up his sleeves after a long day at work to host, it deserves to do very well. Thanks for a great night!

Really enjoyed our meal at the secret Italian. It’s an intimate restaurant that felt like we were eating in a friends kitchen. It seats about ten people. Claudia was warm, welcoming and you get whatever she has cooked. Everything was delicious, tasty, home cooked rustic Italian food. Loved the bruschetta, olives, salami and cheese starters. Probably over indulged and if you want you can have more. The mushroom and sausage soup was very tasty and even my son enjoyed it -praise indeed! We tasted the meatballs which were delicious but my son and I had chicken thighs which were slow cooked in rosemary and tasted delicious, my husbands fish was also gorgeous. Served with cubes of roasted so tasty potatoes. Squeezed in some tiramisu which was also lovely. Apologies I don’t know the other lady’s name but she was also lovely. Great service, warm welcoming fab quirky little place that we will visit again and bring friends. You BYO wine and overall I felt good value for money at £19 pp.
