I went to this venue for a silver wedding anniversary celebration on the afternon on 4th May. The venue is really lovely. There's a great sense of history in the dining area of this former schoolhouse. The food was fabulous and the warm and friendly atmosphere made it rather a magical occasion. I can highly recommend this as a venue to hold an event. Many thanks

Warm welcome from very charming lady who signed us in at a portable reception desk. She informed us dinner service ended at 7.30 a la carte menu nearly £50 or we could chose something lighter but had to eat in room or in the foyer. Room very dated, could not have window open as casement stays were useless. The bed was unbelievably bad, spring outlines visible and I felt everyone, tempted to give up and sleep on floor but found a thick blanket and placed it on top of mattress to soften the effect, what a night! Breakfast was a total farce and had to be served in room or in the foyer, not allowed in restaurant. Small rectangular plate with full English served with sausage that looked like it was uncooked no colour at all, overcooked streaky bacon, just 2 pieces of thin so-called fried bread that had never been fried just dry so nothing to mop up 2 lovely poached eggs. No toast provided , but you could purchase toast and preserves extra at a fiver or cereal at a fiver. What nonesense! No bar, nowhere to relax and chat, confined to dismal reception area. I have to ask the question "is this a hotel?" Not in my opinion. The best things were the 2 poached eggs and that's about it.

Disgraceful company. Please read all the negative reviews if you are thinking of staying here all the positives are for the restaurant only not the hotel stays... We booked to stay here however due to unfortunate circumstances we had to cancel. I phoned up the hotel asking if we could cancel and they refused to cancel the booking. I stated in that instance we have someone else who can stay in our paid room that night and the woman said that the room is no longer available and no one can stay in the paid room. I questioned this as we paid for that room which she is saying is now unavailable and she said no nothing she can do and hung up. Rude owners and we felt like this was a scam and have reported this. We should have done the research prior because apparently they are known for doing this and there is plenty of reviews which say the same!

You will be received with the warmest of welcomes at the schoolhouse. We have been coming here for around 10 years. The service is always amazing, nothing is too much trouble. We enjoyed a few days in the quiet and calm of this charming old school house with lovely views over fields with cows grazing. Our room was light and spacious with a comfy bed and sofa. We received a warm welcome. There was plenty of choice for breakfast including a fish option and a vegetarian option with a bit of a differenc, alongside a traditional full English and a continental option. The restaurant food was a very good standard and we enjoyed a great evening meal.

Loved it. We were moving house and had to stay somewhere for a couple of nights. We chose The Old Schoolhouse because it was small quiet. But we didn't actually realise how how beautiful it really is! Tony greeted us with a smile and very friendly. Tony was also on top of Covid guide lines. Masks (at all times) big tick, hand gell at the door. It was a delight. It might not be everyone's cup of tea because it is what it says on the tin. Old Schoolhouse. It's full of character, we loved it, and Fred the labradoodle was gorgeous. Now the food. Wow! We ordered by phone (covid safe) our order was then left outside our room presented on a try and we then took the meals into our room. Food was absolutely delicious. Presented to a very high quality. And when the restaurant re opens I couldn't recommend the food highly enough. Its a must go.

A shabby, gloomy bedroom overfurnished with large dark furniture. Net curtains that didn't fit windows. Pillow cases not ironed - hope they were clean. Poor lighting added to gloomy atmosphere. Peeling paint in bathroom, shower pressure good but fixed head badly angled so couldn't actually get underneath. Tea making station small shelf on wall which made pouring boiling water into mug potentially dangerous. Dinner at £21.95 and breakfast at £14.95 considered vastly overpriced for this level of establishment. Would not stay again or recommend.

Had to wait more than 45 minutes to be seated. Then to be told there are no waiters available, the owners had to do the serving which was terrible. There was no Christmas spirit in the place more like i would imagine a workhouse. The place was cold. To top it all the waitress(owner) accidentally dropped a bottle of lemonade all over the back of my partners back which also went over a first time worn jacket at the back of the chair. The food was not up to standard for a Christmas lunch - should have gone to McDonalds. They paid for the dry cleaning just about. No other compensation for the distress it caused to my partner. What a complete disaster. Awful attitude.

Misleading information on booking.com about charges, £15 to park a van, £10 to sign an authority form when booking on behalf of someone else (work related- hence they would not have the business card on them) which is ludicrous and clearly money grabbing... even the invoice is hard to read, only found out about the extras charges when invoiced actually received. would not recommend and will not use again. This was just a quick stop over while on busy so I didn't really have chance to take full advantage of this hotel. Lovely old building with a very warm welcome and host. Unfortunately didn't have time to check-out dinner or breakfast which would have provided more opportunity to see everything this nice building has to offer. The bedroom was well equipped and comfortable although it didn't seem to have settled on a style - caught somewhere between a regular hotel room and a boutique-style room.

I recently stayed here for just the night and I'm glad it was only just the night. From the pictures on booking.com it looks a very pleasant hotel and is set in a fantastic bit of country side but the hotel its self is very very dated. Everything from the carpets to decor to fixtures and fittings. There are no tea or coffee making facilities in your room. There is a coffee machine by the front door, which is no good if you like to make your self a morning brew whilst your getting ready.Although these things are enough to put me off by themselves, my biggest gripe is that after I booked I saw in my confirmation that cars are charged at £2 but vans are charged at £15!!!!!!! I am a lone working man with a very tidy smart looking transit van and I fail to see why when there is ample parking in the car park they feel it's fair and right even charge a penny!! It's in the middle of the country and like I said here is more than enough parking there. Also she admitted she does it to put off unwanted clientele which I kind of get, but then in her next breath said I was the perfect kind of guest they were wanting. I said I wasn't happy with the £15 and she said she would refund the extra money she was going to charge me. After several emails to the hotel for a proper vat invoice with the amended price I have still yet to receive it and I am been ignored. Like I said in my heading what a shame. It could be so much more!!!

The hospitality and surroundings are lovely. The menu, on the night we visited, sounded good. The execution of the menu was disappointingly poor. Main course fish was served with what our party commented as "poor carvery style vegetables"; the fish came with one tough roast potato, brussel sprouts and other veg. The fish was moist which was due to a thick covering of fish fat. It would have looked more appetising if it had been removed. Half of the party opted for pudding but the others were, by this stage, disappointed and opted out. Creme brulee was covered in a coating that bent as the spoon entered. It is a pity as this hotel is run by owners who have been in the business for many years. I am hopeful that this was just an off night but I cannot recommend in the light of our visit.

After checking into our hotel #subject to another review# we were asked if we would require dinner. We deferred the decision pending a visit to Royal Wooten Basset in search of other options and a cash machine. My wife was drawn by the rustic quirky nature of the School House hotel so we returned for evening dinner. Before entering we perused the extensive menu posted outside but we knew that we would probably be eating alone! We were warmly welcomed and ushered into the bar. Not quite your normal bar - more of a trip into the past where there used to be gentlemen's private smoking bars. A good selection of drinks but no beers on draught - only bottled. My wife had a Cotswold cider and I had local beer. A little expensive at £5.00 a bottle. We were able to order our food whilst sitting at the bar although the menu was different to that displayed outside. However, there were many other interesting options. We both had a starter followed by a main course. We did have to wait some time but the food was freshly cooked and severed piping hot. I chose a Thai Cod dish with rice. It was a little on the "spicy hot" side for me but a very tasty and generous portion. Worth the wait.Regretfully, we were the only couple eating and staying in the hotel that Friday evening.

The decor is old fashioned and rustic in places but this all adds to the charm. The service was spot on. Very attentive but not overbearing. The menu was varied offering about 8 starters and puddings and 10 mains. Vegetarians are very well catered for. The food was all delicious and arrived hot and well presented. No complaints at all.Come on School house. You need to shout about what you can offer. Some good advertising and reviews and you could really fill a hole in the market in and around swindon. The plus points would be the charming and helpful staff, the food was delicious, my steak was cooked as ordered and I loved the al dente dish of vegetables. There were a few minor niggles, we waited a long time before we sat down to dinner, when we returned to the bar for after dinner drinks the fire had gone out and it was a little chilly in there, if it had been warmer we'd have stayed longer. However the quality of the food and service was very good and I would happily return and recommend the restaurant.

I've been eating here for 18 months and the food has got gradually better and better over that time. For a small kitchen they offer an extensive and interesting menu.I ate here with three friends and we were brought drinks outside as we arrived. We appreciated the colour-coded menus showing which are vegetarian, fish and meat dishes. Our (great value) three course meal was all good - inventive but traditional cooking, i.e. no chips or fancy stuff such as 'foam'. A leisurely evening of good dining and excellent service, all in a delightfully atmospheric dining room (the old Victorian school hall). We really enjoyed the music, mostly fifties but somehow appropriate to the space, so much nicer than bland pop! A class establishment for those who appreciate something very different from a Macdonalds or Harvester experience. We are planning on making this a regular date!

I booked for a table of 12 in the restaurant for my fathers' 80th birthday and all 12 of us were not happy with the service or the food. It took them 45 minutes to serve the starters, the main course came fairly quickly afterwards, however the dessert was another 45 minute wait. The soup was like dishwater, the deep fried brie was overcooked and the pate was far too sweet! The majority of us had the pork schnitzel, including myself and everyone said that it was fatty and overcooked. The whole evening (food, service and the attitude of the staff) was way below average and very amateurish. I did complain and was told that the manger was too busy to see me (there were 18 people in the restaurant including our table of 12 - that should speak volumes for a Saturday night!) I spoke with Karen and she really could not understand why there was a problem even though there was an awful lot of food being thrown away from our table. She was not apologetic in any way, shape or form and begrudgingly gave us a small discount. I had organised the evening and was embarrassed and disappointed listening to all the negative comments from our table about the food and service, however Karen did not appear to be interested in anything I had to say. Her attitude was awful, as was the food and service and the management did not apologise to any of us. Our experience at the School House restaurant was TERRIBLE!!

My friends and I chose this restaurant as it was in a good area for us all to meet as we live some distance from each other. Two of us arrived first and were made welcome. Our overall initiial impression was that it was very cold and very bleak inside. The outside does not do the inside justice as it look uncared for with dirty windows and items stacked so that people could see this from the oitside. Net curtains looked dirty snd were unironed. The food was a little overpriced but we were happy with the menu. The mushrooms (my starter) came relatively quickly and were ok until I found a rusty nail in my mouth. How this arrived there was a mystery. When pointed out to the waitress she was initially apologetic but when we informed her that we were a little concerned about the rest of the meal, she stated' perhaps you better leave!' A highly embarrassing encounter and we left immediately. We were not charged for the drinks we had already had. I do not feel that we cn reommend this restaurant to fellow diners.

My Daughter and I drove all the way to Wiltshire from Birmingham purely because we wanted to try an authentic Dutch meal, so as you can imagine, it had to be good to warrant the journey. The first thing we saw was the stunningly beautiful building and location. A 150 year old Schoolhouse with rolling fields directly in front..this certainly ticked all of the boxes even before we entered. Upon entering we were greeted by Karen, the wife of the couple who have run the Schoolhouse for over 20 years. A friendlier, more polite, more accommodating and genuinely welcoming hotelier/restaurant manager I've yet to meet. It's rare these days to find an establishment where the "want for nothing" service genuinely feels like "nothing is too much trouble" but that's exactly the way you're made to feel here. We were taken to a small but steeped in character bar area towards the back of the restaurant, again, with rolling hills as it's backdrop. After ordering our drinks, Karen painstakingly went through the entire Dutch menu to translate what was on offer. Already salivating, we ordered and were shown to our table in the main dining hall.Karen popped up from time to time and took time to tell us the history of the building, how they came to be there and even how she and her husband, Tonny, the wonderful chef came to meet. We really felt like we'd known them for ages. I was especially impressed and touched that Tonny came out from the kitchen to meet us both, a lovely touch and a fine testimony to the sincerity of this accommodating couple.I ordered the black pudding with apple in a cheese sauce and my daughter ordered chicken croquettes with mustard and a side salad for starters. The food was truly amazing. It seemed to just melt in your mouth in one of those "I want this every day for the rest of my life" moments lol For the main course I ordered Hutspot, a Dutch style gammon with mushed carrot and potatoes and my daughter had the Shitznel, a breaded pork loin with potatoes and salad, again, both were simply wonderful. For desserts, we had pancakes, I opted for raspberry and my daughter the chocolate. Even here we were spoit, served with both fresh cream and freshly made ice cream and in a sauce that even now I'd drive back down there for!! lolI started this review by saying the Schoolhouse had to be good to go so far for. After a meal here, I'd happily make the journey and the effort again if I was looking for a gaurenteed beautiful meal that was reasonably priced and set in a stunning location. However, make no mistake, what truly made our day and makes the Schoolhouse what it is, is Karen and Tonny. Their passion, kindness and welcoming attention to detail to the food and their guests is what would bring me back to this place again and again. Thank you both for not only a wonderful meal, but a wonderful experience.

We've not dined at the School House in Hook for at least 8 years, and we've no idea why we've not been here for do long.A decent selection of starters, mains and puddings all for £18.50 for 3 courses. We (2) opted for the black pudding with baked apple in a cheddar cream sauce / a pate to start, followed by goat sausages & seasonal veg / smoked bacon & duck pie with seasonal veg, with 3 puddings as we were unable to make our mind up!!!!All in all a really pleasant evening, very good service leading to our return in the near future. This would be a great place for a private party, a small group or a romantic dinner for 2.

It was very quiet on arrival and somewhat in need of renovation. I ordered the scallops for starter and home made burger for main. The scallops turned up after 50 mins, were cold inside and swimming in iceberg lettuce and white wine vinegar! The burger was as thick as a brick, dry with bits of gristle in the middle, this I could not eat! After speaking to the waitress she said it was dry as it had no fat (apart from the gristle)! Would question still why it had to be dry, maybe it could of been cooked for less time! My child's burger was equally as bad, he kept saying he was struggling to chew and swallow it, did explain he did not have to eat it but being a child he persevered regardless, it also was missing the side salad which may of made it more palatable! My daughter who is three said this is awful as she was struggling with her over cooked fish. Continuing to my parents food as it was a Mother's Day celebration, my mothers seafood pie was burnt on the outside and soft in the middle, my father said he was getting through his beef (but would cut the extremely bad bits off for the dog) as he was really hungry! Overall a very disappointing Mother's Day meal, the only thing this place had going for it was the waitress was friendly! But hey you may find that of most establishments, would definitely not return!!

Lovely old schoolhouse with lots of genuine features. Was quite cold in the restaurant but can imagine it would be super in the summer. Most amazing bread & butter pudding!!!!!!! Good food / large portions! Had 3 courses for £18.50

Service was relaxed, efficient and friendly. The food was quite pricey, but you expect that on Valentine's Day wherever you go. The building is lovely and full of character, and we enjoyed a pre-dinner drink in the cozy bar. A few tweaks would really bring the place into a higher category - for instance, by serving the veg separately (my main course included spinach with stilton, and whilst I was happy to try it, I wasn't sure I'd like it). Having the meal served this way was a bit like school dinners - maybe that's what the proprietors were aiming for ! And a full sized teaspoon with a tiny coffee cup may seem a bit pedantic of me, but it just seems like a bit more attention to detail would make a great improvement. I would be happy to return again.

We went out with some friends for a meal. We enjoyed a very tasty meal and was warmly welcomed by the owner. There was plenty to chose from and the meals were good and prices varied. The service was very good and the atmosphere friendly. Would definitely recommend andreturn.

We enjoyed a superb meal here last evening with some friends. The building is full of character with high ceilings, oak beams and an open fire. There was a great choice of meals (not specifically tailored towards Christmas but that wasn't an issue), all well prepared, good sized portions and excellent value. With a moderate amount of wine, the bill came in at less than £35 per head which I thought was excellent for a restaurant of this calibre.

As a 50th Birthday celebration for 44 guests we decided to book The School House, with the number of guests we had we were able to have it all to ourselves. Karen was very helpful through the process of arranging the day and giving us the menu choices we wanted. The School House has character and with the fires lit in both the restaurant and bar it was such a warm place to be on a cold wet afternoon. All our guests complimented the food and the choice of venue. We were very happy with our choice.A big thank you to Karen, Tonny and their staff.Steve and Tony

The food was quality and fresh. Everything was well prepared and we were made very welcome indeed. The owners take great effort with what they serve as they must buy the best and freshiest ingredients to come up with such tasty meals. Everyone in the group enjoyed their meal.

Read the mixed reviews on here but decided to give it a go anyway for an evening meal. Good points - the hot starter came on plates so hot they were still hot as they were removed, the salad was well presented and enjoyed, and the fish course looked good. Bad points - the pate was boring and the toast cold and limp, no butter, sauce on fish was strongly flavoured, over powering the fish. We got the feeling that the chef wanted to show off his interests, with a grudging nod to more mundane food. The pancakes were OK, but for the price I expected either 2 slightly smaller or a bigger one. Atmosphere of any description was lacking - presentation poor, e.g. the menus were just pieces of paper no attempt to make anything special of them. We were sort of celebrating birthdays and a wedding anniversary, but felt the evening was a let down. It didn't help that one of our party was unwell afterwards either

Very inflexible (made us pay for 3 extra meals for people who couldn't turn up due to worst snow in UK for decades!! This was probably because the meals were pre-made), poor service (meals cold, probably because they'd been reheated in microwave, got hit with plates by waitresses). Poor drink selection (only one lager, no draught drinks). Only one toilet bowl shared between ladies and gents. Food was average to poor depending on what you ordered.

We have been to eat here many time's over the years, which have been good, this time was not a good experience, Friday 18th October, 4.30pm . The place was not busy when arrived, got seated, ordered food, when food came, it looked good but all was lukewarm, loaded chips very salty so didn’t eat all, tried to get waiting staff attention with no joy staff members standing together chatting(male staff) except for two young girls who seemed to be doing all the work. We did not get checked on which is not good, problem with food could have been corrected. Tips: Most people will be happy to wait an extra 15 mins to have hot food. Staff need to work as team. Check on your customers.

Let down by the fact that they couldn't not find out booking with deposit which we had confirmation of and were able to show them. Took too long trying to sort this rather than seating us when they clearly had the space. Were friendly enough. Food was good. Water jugs were grubby. Toilet was a little grubby. Would go back.
