The pub looks lovely as you approach. We were welcomed and served by lovely staff The food was beautiful, beyond the usual pub food I Would recommend a visit

My wife and I plus Angus the Irish Terrier were staying Airbnb in nearly Berrynarbor and our host recommended The Sawmills Inn for a birthday meal we had planned. It was the best advice of the week. The staff and the environment are both warm and welcoming, plus the food is absolutely delicious! We ended up eating there on two consecutive nights plus an additional early breakfast. The food and drinks menus are comprehensive and the highlights for me were the Steak & Gunness Pie and the Chicken Parmigiana (separate nights!) accompanied by Proper Job for me and Thatchers Gold for my wife. Book soon - you certainly won't be disappointed! (Oh, and the toilets were exceptionally clean too - as an ex-caterer myself it's the first place I always check before even placing an order).

Absolutely stunning food and service when we visited here in June. Lovely views and dog friendly too! I cannot fault the Restaurant, it was clean and very cosy. I can imagine autumn/winter woukd be magical here as they have a fire burner in the middle. Would definitely come back again.

From the minute we walked in, staff were amazing and so friendly. Food portions were big and orders came quickly. Good vegan options and great ambiance. It was busy with families and lots of dogs, but service was great and the atmosphere was relaxed. Will definitely go again when back in Devon.

The setting is nice, the food was OK, but the service was slow. They also don't do roast dinners in the summer months or specials until the evening.

I've just returned from a short break in North Devon. I stayed at The Sawmills, knowing the area and based on the reviews. It was superb. John and his staff certainly know how to keep the customer satisfied! My room was lovely. Really comfortable bed with crisp white linen and big fluffy towels. Breakfast was enormous and of excellent quality! My family were staying nearby and joined me for an evening meal and a breakfast. Again, the food was superb and plenty of it. All the staff were so pleasant and very professional. Nothing was too much trouble! I didn't ask their names, but the lady who was there at breakfast and again in the evening, and the lady with wavy blonde hair who waited on our table in the evening were just lovely!! I'll be back!!

Fortunately, this was a last minute booking as we had left it to the last minute and everywhere else was booked. Although the menu is limited, you won't be disappointed. Food is very tasty, nothing is any trouble for them and we didn't feel rushed. Staff are also very friendly. We were mainly served by Keira.

We had a delicious meal after coming across this restaurant while killing some time before we could check into our accommodation. We didn’t have a booking and it seemed we were lucky to get a table. We had a delicious burger, loaded fries, and Mac and cheese between us. Portions were a good size and food was fresh. Outdoor seating area is lovely on a nice day.

I’m really sorry to be this person because we’ve loved the sawmills for years but me and friends visited the sawmills and we were not impressed. I’m fully aware we are newly out of lockdown so we have tried to give the benefit of the doubt but this is no excuse, we were ignored when we arrived followed by a very sarcastic and unhelpful manager. The manager even rolled his eyes at us whilst taking our order. The seating makes absolutely no sense it was raining and the umbrellas don’t cover the tables. The food has rapidly declined since reopening after lockdown which again I understand but this was not up to normal standards. One meal had a hair in and the staff dealt with this again very sarcastically. For the amount of staff working they are not very attentive. The girl working we believed is Lizzie, is lovely and thank you for your lovely service. Really sorry to be this person but such a shame as this used to be one of our favourite places to dine and as we are locals would come to often, we won’t be returning anytime soon. And the umbrellas don’t even work.

Lovely place and fantastic service. Not a dog person so was put off by the huge amount of dogs inside and out. One table had more dogs than people.The food however was fabulous and big portions. Service excellent. If you are a dog lover this is the place to go.

Disappointing, both on food and service, particularly the brisket. Go to The Depot instead, much nicer atmosphere, food and service.

Food was very poor, tasted like it was cooked from frozen and very oily and extremely overpriced. Servers were rude and never checked how our meal was. We were barely even acknowledged and it wasn’t a busy night. Outdoor fires barely give out heat so it was freezing. Menus contained language in appropriate for children.

This restaurant was very quaint and beautifully situated. The staff were very friendly. Nothing too much trouble. The food and desserts were delicious. I had the steak & ale pie which was lovely and ample of it. My husband had the brisket of beef which he said was delicious and plenty of. We both had the raspberry and white chocolate cheesecake which was very yummy and the slices were much bigger than we expected. We both came out very stuffed. The food was served quickly and very hot. The price was not too cheap but of quality. Recommended.

Booked an 8pm table for dinner, 3 adults. Good atmosphere with a bit of buzz and chat around. Plenty of space as it’s a big pub and the staff have made it covid secure with a one way route and spaced out seating. You will not starve here! Freshly cooked pub food and plenty of it. We totally over ordered and wished we could have finished it all. Macaroni cheese was hot and tasty, came with salad and garlic bread. Chicken wings are juicy and well coated with sauce (not those tiny dry things some places serve). Steak pie is a proper pie - with a base, yay! Not a cheating stew with a pastry lid. Points for the proper pie. Gravy caused a slight scowl as it had separated a bit in the jug, but not such a drama to cause complaint. All in all a very relaxed night with a good meal. Beer was well kept too.

Dropped into here whilst checking out the nearby beaches, we were impressed by the very friendly staff, great food and nice atmosphere. Places like this really add to your holiday experience

Beautiful setting. Closed Monday and Tuesday There were a few cars on the car park which is usually a good sign.Greeted with the mandatory Covid rules, shown to a table. The menu was limited to various burgers, we had the only non burger options lasagne and a steak pie. The meals were served so quickly we could only assume there was a microwave involved. The steak pie was bland, the lasagna ok but sweet and £30 for the pleasure of eating it. I’ve seen better on the “2 for a tenner” offers. Won’t be recommending this place to anyone

We ate here during our long weekend in the area. The front of house was so welcoming and very informative about the menu. We were definitely sold on the specials!We had a 1yr old with us, they had lots of high chairs and suitability sized cutlery. Really impressed! And the pub is beautiful on the inside.If we were here longer we'd be going back.

We popped in for a drink and booked for dinner the following night. Smaller menu (due to Covid) was very nice and still plenty to choose from. We shared cheese nachos to start which we both said were the best nachos ever! Then for mains I had ribs and my wife had brisket. Both were really nice but we couldn't finish as we were full from the nachos.We're staying in the area again in June so will definitely be back.

Visited on a Sunday with 4 others. We booked on line beforehand. Nice friendly greeting, love.y surroundings and seated promptly then orders taken for drinks. Covid measures were in place and easy to understand. We ordered 2 bottles of wine and 5 roast beef.The roast dinners were nicely presented and plentiful. The beef brisket was excellent and made a change to the traditional sirloin or topside! Good selection of vegetables and cooked to perfection.We did not feel that the bill of £102 was excessive for all of us, considering the 2 bottles of wine and the quality of the food. Also the service was spot on being not too intrusive but efficient and friendly. Thank you staff.

we came across this restaurant while on holiday in Devon. The food was amazing burgers are to die for also the beef brisket burger.there was a limited menu but as a party of 6 we had tried most things on the menu and everything we ordered was lovely. staff are really friendly. very clean and tidy and very corona virus safe. and a big bonus with the restaurant is it is dog friendly. as we also had three small dogs. we visited here most days .

A few of the reviews on here have mentioned that this place is expensive for the food they offer. I have to say I fully disagree. I had the brisket in a bun and savoured every mouthful, my wife had the pulled pork, which she enjoyed. Even our daughter's cod goujons were a hit. It isn't cheap, but this isn't just your average pub grub, it's a level above that, so I feel the prices are fair. Yes, the menu is limited, but under current circumstances it does a job.The service was excellent, and the social distancing measures they have in place work well. All in all, a great meal in a nice pub in nice surroundings.

Great service, friendly and efficient in a lovely setting. The meals were okay but the menu is very limited and a little expensive for what’s on offer. We were staying locally and had planned to eat here several times during our break but cancelled after our first visit due the lack of menu choice. We’ve been before and enjoyed it so we will return when the menu choice improves.

As other reviews have mentioned food is far too expensive for what they are offering. Staff however worked fast and efficiently with a smile so hope they are paid well.only really decent thing on the menu was 10oz ribeye for £22. Son enjoyed his lasagne which was a good portion. Places to eat are booked up really quickly so just happy to get a hot meal.

Visited today after booking online. Front of house man super friendly, staff efficient and helpful. Lovely setting, great food. A few pesky wasps around but not the pubs fault. Only thing I would say is dont put the food on paper, it had disintegrated leaving me eatting abit of it Haha...... also £1.10 for a dash is pretty steep. But We will be back

I visited last year on May bank holiday & was very impressed. This year all three of us have visited for a early Saturday evening meal. The service was as last time fantastic ! I’m hoping the menu selection was due to COVID - there wasn’t a great deal to choose from ! The portions were mixed in size ! My partners cheaper meal was a full plate full whereas mine was nearly half a portion None of this would put me off coming again !

We visited as a family of 4 for an early evening meal. Good Covid measures in place and it was easy to reserve a table beforehand. The waiting staff were friendly but not excessively attentive. I do agree with previous comments that the food is expensive, our bill was £60 (£40 discount due to EOHO offer) for 3 adult mains, 4 desserts and a child’s meal. We had one soft drink each. My comments on cost are based on how much the meal should have been. Without the discount our meal would have been £100 which I think is a lot for what is pub food. The food was ok but we did not think it was that great that we would return. There was a mix up with dessert which meant that none of the things which were said to be available were available so we were offered something that was described as a combination of chocolate and sticky toffee. Dessert arrived and it had a strong orange taste which wasn’t particularly nice, if this would have been mentioned we wouldn’t have ordered it. A very average end to a very average meal.

Booked online, easy reservation experience, turned up 15 mins early but was seated straight away. Had the nachos and calamari to start... WOW delicious! Had the pulled pork for main which was ok, chips were really nice, also ordered 2 kids meals which they demolished. Service wasn’t great and mains were slow to come out but we saw others getting great service so I guess we were just unlucky, would definitely go back again!

Although we thought the food was expensive and relatively restricted menu, we all enjoyed everything we ate. The pub was efficiently run with many measures in place for covid 19. Good for families, great phone app to see menu. Will go again, enjoyed my scampi and chips and pint of Tribute!

Visited whilst on holiday with the family and whilst the restaurant was set up well for covid with their menu on a QR code download and a one way system in place, the menu was limited and expensive, particularly the drinks. No mention of specials to us, but overheard another staff member telling another table that there were some on offer as we walked out. The staff were pleasant enough & the service quick, but not sure we'll go back

Whilst I appreciate they’re currently offering a reduced menu, I would say what was on offer was well below average and very expensive for what it was. Certainly won’t be going back.

We arrived in North Devon the day before and had booked this online for Sunday based on the reviews on trip advisor. Service was great but the food was really average. They had only just opened and were offering a covid menu which was very limited. This was fine but if you are offering only 4 or so main dishes at least do them exceptionally well. Won't be returning but if you like everything served with chips and not much flavour then this is the place for you.

Stopped on our way back from a walk for a lunch time lite bite, the portions were huge and really nice food. Theyhad only just opened that day, staff did really well for a first day and the food was excellent! Good choice of drinks too. Socially distancing observed with tables inside and outside. Recommend it. ****

We didn't eat here since arrived when it was closed but wish we had. Great location near the coast and good beach. Very friendly hosts who helped us despite not open that day.

Reduced menu on arrival despite the full menu being on the booking website!! The food is usually so good but we were really disappointed! Such a lot of money for poor food.

Family meal out for last night of our holiday, staff very friendly. Food was amazing, I was very impressed at how they accommodated us, as we we're a group of 7, and their booking system only allowed 6. Would highly recommend to anyone who is staying or planning on staying in the area.

Staying at a local site,this pub is 5 mins walk,and what a find!. Sunday roast was absolutely amazing!,definately recommend. Menu is really good with good size portions and choice. Staff are friendly too. Beer selection is good,and dog friendly too. Nice decor as well.

First time myself and my partner have visited ilfracombe we drove past the sawmills and said we must go, its stunning from the outside and in. The food is fantastic and service was brill too, our first visit was on the 11th feb. We then decided to try another pub close to where we were staying not going to mention any names but when we walked in we were glared at by all the locals and the place smelt bad, so we left and returned to the sawmills on the 13th again very impressed with everything. Thank you. In peak season the sawmills is very popular so i would highly recommend booking in advance you will not be disapointed.

Hadn’t been to the Sawmills for ages. Didn’t realise what I had missed. The rump steak had a wonderful flavour and was cooked(rare) to perfection. My wife’s sirloin was again cooked perfect. The pudding (from the board) was gorgeous. Although the steaks were excellent I thought they were a tad expensive. But I suppose you pay for quality. Will return again.

Visited here today for a business meeting.The place is just gorgeous. Beautiful setting, the river flowing by, and the inside clean, cosy and warm.So often large places like this are lacking in heat!Then the food....I actually didn't realise Mac n Cheese could taste so good. Served with warm fresh bread and a generous salad..... perfect.And finally the staff.All super friendly, really efficient and welcoming.Thanks guys

We had to get together with some family members for a meeting and booked a table at the Sawmills. It was a very busy evening but the staff were very good and attentive. The food was pretty good and was just as described. All in all a good evening.

Myself and hubby visited here for an early evening meal. The service was welcoming and friendly. We shared the garlic mushrooms to start with. There were plenty for us both. Hubby had steak and ale pie which was substantial with tender meat and a generous lid of puff pastry. I had the cod and prawn pie and the prawns were huge and tasty. Meal for 2 with a bottle of wine, £53. Very pleased

Hot sticky Chicken wings..NOT. they were just deep fried, dry and over cooked. Tasteless, stickyless and definitely not spicy. If you have changed your menu then please tell the customer.Salmon special..not so special, no seasoning, FROZEN? crushed potato with smk salmon and crab, so dry, 3 butter packets didn't help, salmon tasted unseasoned & microwaved. Vegetables not seasoned.Lasagne..mince,1 pasta sheet, cheese on top does not make a lasagne. Undressed salad, very tasteless, again no seasoning. Chips okay.Lamb shank..WAS it really home cooked or a long life pack, like so many other places use? Was the mash frozen? Again vegetables not seasoned.Burger..it was alright nothing special, no seasoning again.Do the cooks taste the food? lack of seasoning through the whole meal. Spoke to the manager, listed our complaints, she did take off the wings and Salmon from the bill, Thank you for that. She did remind me a bit of a child being told off..looking down rather than at my husband who was calmly making our complaints. The staff need training in hospitality, not at all attentive or interested in the customer needs, didn't even offer condiments or come back to make sure everything was ok with our meals,if they are not trained they won't learn.. managers job I think. As a manager you should manage not make friends. Overall a very poor experience. Sad considering how good it used to be, visited in August and was lovely, what's changed?Please take down the sign..it's not funny or remotely correct.Wouldn't go back.

We enjoyed a fantastic meal with friends at the Sawmills on Christmas Eve. The food is always amazing quality and the service was quick despite the team being pretty busy.

I phoned up and asked to reserve a table for 6 as it was my daughters and best friends birthday ..When I got there the table was laid up with balloons, tablecloth and all the little details that you could hope for..The staff were attentive and the food divine..I could not fault the Sawmills in any way and will certainly return and recommend to my guests that stay at my b and b ..Thank you for all your effort and a wonderful warm welcome and enjoyable evening.

Ate here while we were staying locally. There is a lovely atmosphere but food is expensive for what is really basic pub food. Staff were friendly but we did have to ask for menus when we wanted a dessert and then we also had to ask for someone to take our order.

A busy, friendly place. Enjoyed a good meal and good beer.Pleasant room,lively but without being ottp. Had reservations as we spproached(looks a bit like a hungry horse type of place) but not so!

Spending a couple of days In Ilfracombe searching for a nice pub that would dish out more than the usual ‘ fast food’. Have to say that we loved everything about this place and the food was outstanding.

Finally visited this beautiful pub, and It did not disappoint.

We went for dinner on Halloween with two kids and a dog. Food and service were very good and kids and dogs were made very welcome. Would definitely recommend.

A wonderful venue for a family or couple to eat or just chill.The food is good and the ambiance lively.

Been some time since we have visited, perhaps 19 years, having family here we visit the area regularly, we have been past so many times, but decided this time to book for Sunday lunch, my only regret is we haven’t been earlier, the Brisket roast was really delicious and the veg selection top draw and topped off with a super Yorkshire pudding with stuffing, plenty of gravy in its own jug, will definitely returning on our next visit to the family here.

Called on our way past for dinner as looked a lovely old pub. Have to say very basic food. Atmosphere ok.

I really don't enjoy leaving bad reviews but this place is not how they market themselves! Having been holidaying in the area for a couple of days we planned in a nice evening out to come here dine and relax. It looks so amazing from the outside and is set in an absolutely beautiful location but that's all thats going for it. Such a shame as inside, its badly laid out (no reference to being an old sawmill) with boring plain decor and allow dogs everywhere. Staff have a bad attitude and don't seem to care so in the end we just got up and left without ordering. Ironically, another couple who entered just as we were leaving, literally did the same and walked straight back out! Sorry but we won't be back or recommending.

Stayed here for a night. Our room was clean and comfortable although quite basic but it was nevertheless good value for money. We ate in the pub in the evening and although food was good we did find it quite pricey for what it is. Staff were friendly but we did have to ask for sauces, they did bring us a wooden carrier with sauces in but all the both the mayonnaise & ketchup bottles were empty! We did also have to ask for dessert menus and then ask again for a dessert order to be taken. We did enjoy the atmosphere there but would reconsider before going back again.

The local convenience store in Hele Bay recommended this, and so glad they did. We had no reservation, but where lucky to still find a table inside (rainy day). Well stocked bar, anything you like (no cocktail menu, but they came up with something and it was fab). Menu that caters for all ages and taste buds. Good food, good service, good portions. Prices as expected. Book a table!

The Sawmills is one of those places you don’t hesitate in recommending or taking friends to, it’s consistently very good and there’s always a lively atmosphere.

Great to take our friends and family, food is great, smashing, warm and friendly place, cosy in the winter, trendy, great out door space, by the river, eat in or out 😊

Popped in on a Thursday early evening. Staff very helpful and the food was very good. A little over priced but on the whole very good. Would recommend booking a table as they do get very busy

Lovely atmosphere here but food is average and quite expensive for what is really just pub food. Lots of young staff wandering around but most not seeming sure what they should be doing, we had to ask for missing cutlery, sauces, dessert menus & then for our dessert order to be taken, got fed up with waiting & in the end went without ordering desserts.

Lovely pub with a nice relaxed atmosphere. They had two large groups bookings in and were full but managed to accommodate us outside, making sure that we were comfortable and warm by moving the heaters. Nothing was too much trouble. The food was lovely and plentiful with lots of local produce on the menu. The service quick and the staff especially the bar staff were fab. Wouldn’t hesitate to eat here again.

This was a mixed visit, the starter and main were very nice as was the welcome. However, the service was slow and the meal was quite expensive for what we had.

Me ,my wife and daughter visited here and could not rate the place enough. Firstly the staff were welcoming and attentive. The Food was fantastic. Price was more than reasonable and venue was very well presented.

Poor service from most staff, not greeted on entry. Great service from the bartender and a young man with glasses who served us. My wife cannot have dairy and the waitress who served us brought my wife a burger which contained dairy. Despite multiple conversations about her intolerance.

Lovely dinner with the family, the staff are very friendly and the food was great. Service was brilliant at the start, but as the place filled up, the staff were overwhelmed and took a while to order desert. Go a little earlier and you would be fine. I would come back.

4 of us went here for a meal and were very happy with food and service so we booked for a party of 16 ( including 4 children) to come for a birthday party later in the week. One of the children needed a special diet which was no problem to the staff. Everyone enjoyed their meal and the staff were pleasant and helpful. The toilets were clean. This is a disabled friendly restaurant and I would recommend it to anyone.

Went for a meal and while the food was fairly nice, it was crazy expensive for North Devon. I think we seemed to be the last to be served and sadly the staff made it clear they wanted to go home. This made us feel rather uncomfortable. We recently went to a London restaurant owned by a famous chef.and their prices were cheaper!!

We went as a family of 7 and a dog. There was a good selection of games to keep the kids happy, which is always a plus and the dog was allowed inside the restaurant.

Fab lunch with friends. Big portions too. Service could be a lot friendlier however. Fab large decking area for outside eating

Went here previously for an evening meal and decided to pop in on our way home from a trip out for a late lunch. This was around 2pm so it was very quiet. Stood by sign waiting to be seated for what seemed like an eternity and eventually got seated but made to feel that was an effort for the staff member, took ages for our order to be taken and when it did arrive it was wrong so had to wait longer for the correct food, food is okay when it arrives. Main meals came on time but when plates were cleared we were asked if we wanted a dessert, said yes and got menus, but waited for over 30 mins for someone to return to take our choices. Gave up in the end and husband went to the bar to pay as no sign of anyone to bring bill to us. Lots of staff around but seem unwilling to approach tables, we must have been one of only 4 tables in use so hardly rushed off their feet.

We have been here a number of times whilst on holiday. We were disappointed with our meal this time, we felt that since our previous visits the quality of the food used was less than what we are used to.

Decided to try this pub after great reviews, food was ok and service a little slow as very busy. Only downside was the amount of dogs, it was like eating in a kennels and not all of us like dogs, especialiy my children who can be a little worried when too close. We did sit in the dog free area in the corner, but not sure I would visit agin due to this, as unable to sit outside on a lovely evening due to amount of dogs of which my boy is not too sure about after being jumped on once in a similar situation.

Booked a table to escape the campsite storm rolling in. The food was fantastic. There were plenty of staff but obviously mostly new starters who spoke little English so service wasn’t brilliant. The food however was excellent. Mackerel from the specials board was cooked perfectly, seasoned well, great size and served with well balanced sides. Would definitely go back and I imagine by then the ‘newbies’ will be rocking it

Popped in for lunch today. It has been completely renovated. Staff are very pleasant and friendly. We had the burgers and it was amazing

Brilliant food, beer and atmosphere. Some of the prices are quite expensive, but the food and service are excellent. You can also find some affordable and tasty bites - the fish and chips is reasonably priced and super tasty. We also tried the half lobster for 19 quid and it was among the best we've ever had.

In North Devon for a family wedding so only stayed one night. Rooms were clean, tidy and comfortable, staff really helpful and friendly. Breakfast excellent. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again

Arrived on holiday 10th July prices for meals were expensive enough then but on our visit on our last night on 26th July the prices Had risen by in some cases £3 per dish a bowl of onion rings had risen from £2 to £3.95 an 8oz rump steak had risen from £23.95 to £26.95. I ordered a burger for my main which looked nice however was very raw in the middle. Overall the food is average and very over priced and clearly they love to rip off holiday makers. Avoid unless prepared to re mortgage to pay for your meal.

This pub was a short walk away from our beautiful B&B; so we decided to try out on our first evening in the area. Calamari to start and chicken tikka for main. Calamari was delicious, Chicken tikka was average for me but my partner loved it. Found the drinks slightly over priced but genuinely couldn’t find more attentive staff, we were asked 5 times if we wanted a table when queuing to pay for the bill.

What a cracking Steak meal well done to the chef absolutely spot on. My wife enjoyed a nice pudding , Staff very polite however they let themselves down by not paying attention to customers walking in not finding a table and walking out two couples every table had reserved on it I find this a little odd , But well than done thank you

Highly recommend eating here, very friendly staff and the choice of food was really good and the special board was excellent. 3 of us eat there, One had the ribs wow went for the smaller plate and it was packed the meat fell of the bones and the chips were the best I’ve ever tasted, one had the fish pie which was packed full of fish & tasted and one had a ribeye cooked to perfection. No food was left on anyone’s plate

Wasn't as nice as we thought it would be from these reviews. The food was the quality of a slightly better Wetherspoons with a bigger price tag. Lovely looking place and nice seating for a drink but probably wouldn't bother eating there again.

We had a really plain boring meal, it’s a shame as I spent ages researching where we could go and I was really looking forward to it, as it’s a smoke house.

Very average meal. Three of the party had burgers, one had a steak pie with only two pieces of meat in it ! After making a complaint the price was deducted from the bill. The service was very slow to start with after ordering drinks , but the food came quickly. Only one starter was ordered , garlic bread which for £2.95 I was expecting more than two very small slices. Disappointed as I recommended booking there .
