Pilton Fryer in North Devon

Buy fish and chips from here quite often and usually very good. Today not so good. Fish was OK, peas were sloppy and not very warm and the chips were quite obviously reheats from lunchtime - overcooked with a texture like rubber. Very disappointed!

Ordered fish chips mushy peas... £13:70 , chips was OK, peas was OK not much of a taste of them .. fish was nice but batter was very very greasy only problem I had was I found a bone in the fish ....

We just had takeaway fish and chips for the second time and once again the food was lovely. Crispy batter on the fish. We don't usually eat all the batter but it was devoured on both occasions. The service was fast and the price was reasonable. We won't bother with anywhere else from now on.

We are local, popped in for chips. Not freshly cooked, I suspect they'd been sitting for a while. They were hot but much too hard to eat. Not crisp and fluffy, but hard all through. Couldn't eat them. Usually enjoy their chips, but not good today.

First time in Barnstable for some years, followed Google directions to The Pilton Fryer! And I am glad I did, really friendly, bubbly and helpful staff and to top things off the food was lovely!

Best fish and chips we had in years

The food is banging but the price is OTT. Talk about shrinkflation. Large cod £7.90 which wouldn't be a problem if the cod was large but its only the same size as what a regular cod used to be. Ordered curry sauce, wasn't in the bag. Went back for the sauce, only to be given Mushy peas... A third trip wasn't worth the effort. Shame, used to be a great chippy but at those prices....Not worth three trips

Went in at 6pm, even though it was very busy, the staff were very polite, and everything was cooked fresh to order, even asking for small tweaks wasn't a problem. The food quality is superb, really fresh fish and perfectly tasty chips

Really nice bunch, always get service with a smile. Everything is made to order so you always get piping hot food that tastes good. They have a great variety too.

Absolutely the best fish and chips I’ve had in my 70 years on the planet! My haddock was moist and flakey, the batter was so crunchy and delicate it was almost like tempura. Chips without sog. Outstanding!

Chips was very soft and uncooked, just like smash potato. Really disappointed. Been looking forward to the meal all day as well.

Small chippy shop takeaway only , difficult to park nearby, ok for locals to walk to , or use just eat if you don't mind paying service charge + delivery cost on top of food cost .

Popped in to this lovely Fish and Chip shop on passing through Pilton to visit an old friend. As a Coeliac I was pleasantly surprised to see that they had Gluten free versions of many of the items on the menu. I ordered GF Cod and Chips. It was cooked fresh to order and was absolutely delicious. Lovely knowledgeable chef/server. There is no seating so bear in mind it is take away only. Highly recommended!

Low marks because we visited for a quick service meal and had to wait about 50m fir our food. Lots of other people came and went away with theirs whilst we waited. I think a lot had done orders online which I get but if you've got a big backlog then at least explain at the point of ordering that there's a long delay. We had young children who were not happy to wait that long!! Parking outside not easy either, though I appreciate it is based on a small residential street. Just worth factoring in if you're unable to walk there. Food was OK once we had it but not worth the ridiculous wait time. The lady serving was, however, very friendly and polite.

Great for Gluten Free Monday! We were on holiday and stopped here and me and my 8 year old are coeliac. We had a large gluten free fish and chips, a large gluten free battered sausage (new in) and my husband had fish cake and chips. It was all delicious! My daughter said she would give her gluten free battered sausage ‘a million out of ten’!! Excellent service, very knowledgeable on gluten free and super friendly. Would highly recommend!

Quick, efficient, friendly with great food.

We have been having takeaway from here for nearly 2 years now, and have never had a bad meal... Everything is tasty, good portions and the staff are great....nothing is too much for them, even when they are busy.

I go to the Pilton Fryer occasionally. Previous times the cod and chips has been great. Tonight, it was dry, overcooked and half cold. Not good value at all.

Normally I would say great food but where is the batter on my cod it's so thin and tastes very very weird soapy ,the fish in the second box was in half and batter lacked the entire broken fish ..chips well I wouldn't say we had a portion each maybe between us yes . My box is swimming in grease .Not impressed.

Went for 1st time last night after moving close by 6 months ago. Wasn't disappointed. Cooked fresh fish chips and pea fritter for me and hubby. Was quite big portions so will get 1 meal between us on our next visit. We couldn't eat it all. Really friendly and excellent customer service with a smile.😃

To be honest we wasn't impressed with our food that got delivered. Chips had a funny taste to them and the jumbo battered sausage was burnt and dark .crispy hard that they were not edible. If you can't deliver good quality food then don't take the money and don't send out what's been sat in your warmer for ages. Very disappointed

Chips were hard, not very hot & bland, they must be using wrong potatoes , the roe I had was very greasy and dripping with it

Ordered through JustEat. Order arrived and was missing a portion of chips, rang up and told them and they took no responsibility for it and said there was nothing they could do. Said if I wanted a portion I would have to reorder through JustEat which would have meant paying another delivery and service fee!! Also the other portions of chips I did receive were the smallest I've ever had even though I ordered a large portion. My partner pulled out a few bones from his fish too... Potato Scallop was rock solid so if you like your potatoes raw this is the place for you! Lady I spoke to on the phone was also very patronising and rude and couldn't wait to put the phone down. TERRIBLE CUSTOMDR SERVICE!!!

I visited late on a Wednesday evening to buy some chips and a couple of battered Mars bars. The chips were some of the best I've ever had (even better than 'orange' chips from where I live) and the Mars bars were a real treat. The staff were also wonderful and the service was fast.

Really like this one. Personally, imo one of the best in the area. It does get very busy however. Prices are pretty reasonable too and good sized portions. Freindly staff.

I have just paid over 15.00 for what I expected to be a haddock, large chips at over 3.00 and 2 large sausages. I was presented with a slim box which when I opened it I had at best a very small cod / gudgeon, 2 sausages and at best a small portion of chips underneath @ 3.30 a portion. I strongly urge everyone to avoid this rip off local and get value and quality at Squires or the Pelican as it is well worth the journey. Total Rip Off. Avoid

Easily the best fish and chips in North Devon! Easy to order by phone. The cod was tender and succulent. The light as air crispy batter was delicious. Nicely cooked chips with not a hint of grease. Pilton Fryer will be my ‘go to’ chippy in future.

Unfortunately the chips were hard and the batter on the fish overdone,it was rock hard. Usually very good but something went wrong tonight.

Ordered VIA Deliveroo and ordered Chicken tikka masala and received a chill con carne. After phoning was told it’s something you’ll need to take up with Deliveroo as you ordered with them even though the lady did say it was her fault as she made it and packed it. Lady did offered to make the correct meal hence why I’m giving 2 stars and not 1 but I had to drive across town to collect it or just accept what I had. Disappointing experience, probably won’t go back to The Pilton Fryer sadly.

We ordered online and the food was good but the portion size was very dissapointing especially for the price. Possibly the smallest portion of chips I've had from a chip shop. I will say the cod dog is delicious though and the food is tasty.

Ordered online for delivery paid more to have it delivered first. Had cheesy chips which cost £4.20 not alot for the price and they were cold.

Just had crispy battered fish and crispy chips fabulous this was my third visit in a matter of weeks . I had moved away from this chippy before Covid but l believe new owners are there and doing a lovely job .

This little fish and chip shop has been updated together with the menu. Chips were excellent and the fish done to perfection. Friendly staff banter.

We regularly have a takeaway from the Pilton Fryer on our yearly holiday to the area, and it never disappoints. Everything is made fresh to order, and well worth the wait. We also dined at another (more well known) eat in fish and chip shop during the visit, and Pilton's were head and shoulders above - despite being quite a high bar to beat! Great, friendly customer service too - lots of banter - but the food itself is amazing. VERY crispy batter and perfect chips - and the deep fried Mars bars kept the kids happy too :-)

Visited the shop this evening to buy a large portion of chips, I waited outside in a lengthening queue for half an hour, during this time you processed orders phoned in and for uber eats, but ignored the line outside, I live in Yeo Vale and with the walk it took nearly 40 mins not to get my chips, I then left drive to the whiddon valley fryer and was served in two mins, there they have the staff, and own system for dealing with phone orders, deliveries and walk in orders, at no time did your staff update, apologise or say when they would serve, not good

Agree with Marie milgate and Stephanie Carter. So slow. Again only 1 customer in the shop when I entered. No acknowledgement. After what seemed like an age the young lad asked me if I'd been served which I thought was very funny as no one else was there to be served and I'd been standing in front of him all the time. I only wanted medium chips and large curry sauce. They wanted 10p for a bag. Chip Portion was pretty small and overpriced even from what I get in Surrey. I guess it possibly caters mainly for locals. I went because it had pretty good Google rating. Won't ever be going again. The other customer was still there when I left and they were apologising to him for the delay so if you go I hope you fare better.

I have been visiting this chippy with my family and alone for 14 years. I won't be going there ever again or at least until they get rid of the young girl that served me last n Saturday night. She was very rude and offensive from the moment I walked in. So much so that I cancelled my order and walked out in sheer disgust. This has been my local chippy and the service is normally friendly and the food is great. This experience has completely ruined it for me.

Just moved to Pilton and am feeling rather smug to have such a corker of a takeaway on my door step. Monday night you can get gluten free which is Amaz ing. Great choice with fast and friendly service. A wonderful local gem!

20 small chips for portion was a really good chip fish shop but I wont be comeing back

Only one other customer in the shop with 2 people serving: was not acknowledged upon entering and waiting at the counter. Server was very young and appeared inexperienced. I had a baby in a carrier on me and a toddler. She was incredibly slow, and struggled to fill the boxes with the food. I wasn't told which drinks came with the meal, I had to ask (get the feeling if I hadn't asked then I wouldn't have been offered them). The server also forgot to give me the bottle of Tomato sauce I had paid for, which meant I had to walk back up the high street after realising I didn't have it. The food was OK, but customer service training is required.

A fabulous place with a surprising and most tempting menu, very helpful friendly staff. Excellent tasty food.

Nicest chips I've had, great chicken nuggets too. Have a great selection on their menu. Their chicken korma is also a hit with me too. Staff are very friendly, and try to make service as simple and quick as possible. Couldn't recommend and more highly.

Always have the griddle cod and is then online place I know who does it in Barnstaple. The problem is that the fish is sometimes small and the chips are old. This depends on what time you go in though. Can be the best in town on a good day.

Was really disappointed tonight. Would have walked out if it wasn't for being really really hungry and it being late! Not sure where the usual staff are but both experiences since the fire have been poor unfortunately. Last night I listened to a chap out the back make what I hope was (joke) vomit noises whilst preping Our burgers. He then took the curry sauce pot out the back and this time infront of me and the fryer did it again this time into the pot! Both staff tonight led me to feel worried about the food I was eating! Such a shame as always loved the food from here!
