Dreadful Sunday lunch. Worse than school dinners. Rock hard beef, like it had been hanging around for ages. Small bowl of wet veg - no serving spoons. Roast potatoes - rock hard, like stones. Dirty cutlery. Maybe it was just a sunday thing and better in the week.

The rooms are above a pub, the staff are very friendly and the pub is very welcoming. The food and beer are very good. The room was tatty, the kettle lid was hanging off and bounced off my arm when pouring, the TV remote had apparently gone missing weeks ago and the front of the draw was hanging off. You can buy all-in-one remotes for about a fiver, simple bit of DIY and paint would fix the drawer and a cheap argos kettle would avoid anyone getting burnt.

I was staying overnight in the area after attending a funeral in Swindon and for convenience chose the Saracens Head, where the wake was held. First of all, the arrangements for the wake were well organised and there was a good selection of finger food, which was very good quality and more than adequate in amount. Drinks were reasonably priced. I had booked a single room and it was very adequate for my night’s stay. The room was a reasonable size with double bed and an ensuite which was on the small side but fine for just me. The room was quiet and cosy with its own radiator with temperature control, the bed was comfortable and the room and ensuite were clean; tea/coffee-making facilities were provided. The furniture was basic and the interior decoration was in need of some remedial work, but that was a minor point. The room price was very reasonable and included a continental breakfast (English breakfasts were available from the menu). Finally, a word about the staff. Everyone was very friendly and helpful and service in the bar and dining areas was quick and cheerful.

Been here a couple of times for the Christmas dinner and found the food is fabulous!! My ONLY criticism is please, please, please put something else on the menu for a vegetarian other than a NUT ROAST!! That is the only main option (which I see is also the only option on the Sunday menu too), and it would be nice to have another choice. A nut roast is NOT what vegetarians all like - please have some imagination. Your nut roast has lost one star from me.

Visited this pub last night and as soon as we walked in, it smelt of cigarette smoke, just like pubs used to smell before smoking was banned in pubs. We bought our drinks and chose to take them outside, due to the smell. To get to the garden you have to walk through an enclosed smoking area (large room, not an open area) which was disgusting. Having to walk through smoke and pass filled ash trays is not pleasant. Will not be visiting again.

Went as a party of four at midday for Sunday lunch. Haven't been to the pub for many years. Wife and I had nut roast which was vile. You got three very large roast potatoes and one small boiled potato with it. The large potatoes were not crispy and felt like they could have been cooked the day before and warmed up. The gravy was tasteless. A plate of mixed veg was also included but the peas were hard. One of party had pork which he said was nice but overall we didn't think the main at £13 a head was worth it at all and will not return. The service was standard but not warm and welcoming. The waitress sighed when we declined desserts. Guilt tripping me is not a trait I appreciate.

Sarancens Head Hotel Highworth Swindon SN6 7AG Well, where do you start with this hotel, I only booked this as a black Friday deal the website ad does make the place look reasonable this is far from the reality, one good point is the staff do try to be helpful, but their hands are tied with the condition of the hotel and the misleading presentation on the web sites THE room I booked was a single room when I was shown it very basic the journey via the pub was very of putting with things stored openly on the landings and makes an untidy/ unclean appearance When I got to the room the was an old-fashioned slash window that could not close, I did get help from the staff who also could not close the window it was a cold night with a draft there was a blind over the window, but this was flapping all night with the wind The room was very small with stretched arms you almost touch both walls the tv was very small but did have Netflix and you tube wifi connection was good The coffee making facilities was very sparce compared to other hotels only enough to make a single cup , I was supposed to have a private bathroom, this was open to anyone and was at the end of a hall round a corner where you had to dodge a pile of towels and sheets that was stored in an overflowing corner I booked for two nights but checked out after one and moved to a different hotel am still waiting on refund details

The covid guidelines are strictly adhered to, you will feel totally safe here. We ate here for lunch while having our dog groomed, which we often do. In these difficult times their C-19 precautions are hot very good and all staff had face protectors. We felt really safe. The food was absolutely awsome, so much food we could not eat everything and it came out piping hot which is important to me. The pie of the day my partner loved and my house burger was excellent, nice and spicy. The only thing I'd say about my burger is that it didn't need all the chopped salad... Just sliced tomatoes, onion and lettuce would have done it. Will we be going back... Absolutely lutely. Great value for money

Disappointed with the lack of covid 19 precautions in place. No staff were wearing visors or masks, ( I work in a pub myself and we all wear visors when taking food and drinks to tables) no one prompted me on arrival to sanitise nor did anyone explain one way systems around the pub. There was a lot of cross contamination with waitress using her phone to work a bill out at the same time as using the card machine and handing it to us individually in tern. I also noticed the waitress holding numerous glasses with fingers inside the glass when clearing then moving to next table. All of these points were highlighted to me as I also work in the pub / restaurant industry. On a lighter note the food was delicious, I thoroughly enjoyed my dish. I just think it’s a shame there hasn’t been much thought into covid 19 precautions. People want to feel safe to dine, unfortunately as things stood I did not.

It took me a while to decide where to go for a family meal to celebrate my Husband’s 40th Birthday. The Saracens was by far the most attractive offer of £9.50 per adult and £5.50 for children for their Sunday roast. I thought it would be a challenge for the establishment as there were 29 of us. Well if they found it challenging it certainly didn’t look like it. The food is fabulous. Thick cuts of meat. Super crunchy potatoes. Yorkshire puddings and seasonal vegetables. Absolutely superb. The desserts are super special. The pub was new to a lot of our family, however they have all said how fantastic it was and how they will be returning very soon. Thank you AJ and the team. Something has happened to the quality of the food at the Saracens. The quality has definitely gone down over the past 2 months ! This is very sad as I thought they had turned it around with great food on pervious visits. The steak was inedible, we asked for a rare steak and was given a well over cooked piece of tough meat. The chicken was over cooked. Needless to say we will not be returning soon. If you want pies or something that that can be left in the over, then fine. But when it comes to meat, then pick something else off the menu.

The ale is served direct from the barrell, and I found it to be well kept. We lunched in the Saracen's Head on Thursday 27 April purely "On Spec" and my wife and I ate a very reasonably priced meal in reassuringly Disco and Football TV free conditions. My steak was delicious, tender and cooked exactly as I had asked for it and my wife enjoyed her Steak & Kidney Crumble with fresh "Veg of the Day". We are currently looking for "Dog Friendly" B&B; in Highworth as my wife's mum has just been moved into a Care Home there and we will be travelling from Plymouth to visit her. Unfortunately, the accommodation at the Saracen's Head, which is very reasonably priced, does not allow pets so sadly we will not be availing ourselves of it's services on a regular basis. I would however, have absolutely no reservations in recommending the place to anyone wanting a nicely prepared, fairly priced meal, served in a very comfortable and peaceful Lounge Bar. All in all, a Good Experience. Well done Saracen's Head.

Ate here with 2 colleagues, beer was good as was decor and atmosphere. Nice menu with balanced choices however 20 minutes after ordering we were told that one starter wasn't available. Waitress serving main courses then didn't seem to know the dishes and what sauce went with each main; sauces didn't arrive with the dishes, gravy for the pie was about 2 table spoons and mushroom sauce for the steak had to be asked for after waiting 10 minutes. Others were happy with their mains but my steak, which I'd ordered rare, came out looking grey and floppy and was over medium. Deserts were OK but not nothing special and a little over decorated with chocolate sauce drizzles falling off 1/2 the plate.

My husband and I visited the Saracens head hotel for a wedding and booked the last room available (twin). We booked in during the afternoon and went straight out to the wedding ceremony. We returned in the late evening. As I got into one of the single beds I almost fell out as the bed frame underneath was badly broken and had collapsed, this was a shock considering I'm eight months pregnant. My husband ended up taking the mattress off the bed and slept on the floor leaving me to sleep in the other bed, not ideal! The next morning at breakfast my husband informed the day manager. She told him that they already knew about the broken bed and not to worry as we wouldn't be charged for the damage! What??? When he asked her why she hadn't told him about the broken bed when we booked in she said it's because they they were fully booked and that a new bed wasn't arriving until the following week. The lady apologised for the issue. I personally thought this was terrible service and a serious health and safety risk. My husband wasn't happy and when he returned the key he spoke to the same lady again stating that he expected some sort of refund. We did end up getting a partial refund but not until my husband had to request it. Awful way to treat new custom. We actually had our friends (a couple) staying in the family room on the same floor (which had 3 beds) surely, the hotel could of used one of the beds from that room to replace the broken bed beforehand?! Apart from the bed issue the shower in the room (top floor) had no water pressure leaving us with a trickle to shower in during the morning. So we were both very tired and grumpy after a terrible nights stay. One big positive however was the food, they did a very nice breakfast!

This was a first time visit with former work colleagues was a real treat. It's a lovely old pub with a warm welcome. On a Thursday night in the first week of March it was really quite busy and we were warned in advance that there would be a delay for food as they were catering for a large table. The menu is standard pub fare with a few different dishes on a black board, which included such favourites as faggots. I ordered the old staple of Ham, Egg and Chips, or HEC as it was called on the menu, and it also came with peas. The ham was very nice and there was so much of it that I couldn't manage all of the chips. My friends ordered barbecue chicken which came with chips and mixed vegetables and a three fish medley which came with fresh vegetables and new potatoes. The prices were very reasonable and the service was very friendly. We did have a wait but as we had already been advised of this, it wasn't a problem, it just gave us more chance to catch up. I'd definitely go back again.

I has asked for my steak to be cooked medium however it was bleeding and rare to the point that I was unable to eat it. The peppercorn sauce had no flavour compared to previous times I have had it. We also had drinks and my friend ordered a lemonade that was completely flat, even after asking for a replacement it was still unsatisfactory. Disappointing result for what is normally a lovely pub.

Previous meals at this establishment have been of a good standard, but this meal was a nightmare, so bad it was laughable. I ordered bbq chicken with bacon and cheese, I expected Hunters Chicken, when it arrived the chicken and bacon looked anemic and the bbq sauce was missing! the side salad was lettuce! We waited for a jug of sauce, but finally had to ask and received a bowl of cold sauce out of a jar! My husbands mixed grille was received on a small round plate with meat again sat on a bed of lettuce, no vegetables, the meat consisted of HALF a pork chop! 1 sausage, 4 oz steak, a small chicken breast. Please avoid the vegetable crumble, this is literally frozen mixed veg covered with breadcrumbs, no sauce, when we asked for sauce, as it was dry and not edible, we were charged! When asked how are meal was by staff, we redponded that it was not good and she simply replied, Sorry! At no time were we asked if there was anything they could do to improve our visit. I was totally shocked and upset for our mum as it was her Birthday, we simply had to try to make the best out of a disaster. Management who were not there on the night were spoken to a few days later, but not interested. We will not be going back.

Just had meal with friends. Service very slow and obviously not trained - got order wrong which meant veg arrived 15 mins after main course, which had obviously been kept under heat lamps as steaks dried out and luke warm and sauce congealed. Coffee tasted of salt.Manager very unhelpful and refused to taste drinks. Will not be eating there again.

We had a 1 night stay in a twin room, the room was a bit tired and the shower barely trickled out. Paint was peeling off the ceiling but for price, location, Wifi included and the breakfast next morning well worth the £60 a night we paid. With a few minor touch ups/or modernization to room 8 it would of been a 5* rating.

Nice staff with good customer service. The room is very spacious and clean. The breakfast is one of the best, kept me going most of the day. Plenty of parking. Worth every penny spent. Very good value for money...simply love it. Would recommend it.

A pub ran with a local brewer, this is the very good end of pub food and if they were all as good as this British food would be renown the world over

I normally have a lovely experience,i am used to the lovely focused staff and incredible drinks however, the staff that was serving on the 4th of june were unfocused, chatting to each other which left me and other customers waiting for about 10 mins, took them ages to make as they were chatting and gossiping! i normally don’t like writing reviews but felt this was necessary:/ photo is supposed to be a mint choc chip frostino 🤦♀️

We fancied a change from the hotel restaurant and the menu the Freke Arms offered had plenty of gluten-free options as well. We booked and received a message back quickly confirming the booking. We were greeted warmly and shown to our table promptly. Menu options were explained clearly and there were several specials on offer. The food we received was plentiful and very tasty indeed and the beer and wine were delicious. All the staff were friendly and we had a good chat about the pub as it had a bit of history. Karen and her staff went above and beyond and the service we received was first class. If we are ever in the area again we would certainly stop by the Freke Arms for a meal.
