The Sandpiper in West Lancashire

Been here a dozen times from an evening meal as a couple to business lunch or social drink. Reliable and convenient location on the way into Ormskirk.

Our server Alex was fabulous, always had a smile and was incredibly bubbly.

Lovely welcome with lovely staff who were very attentive. Popped in before picking our daughter up from uni so it wasn't planned but the staff were very accommodating.

Never had a bad meal here, the food is always lovely. Considering the quality of the foods and beverages on offer, and the customer base it is aiming for, the service sadly doesn't match. It is not the worst- but it really could be better. I'm writing this as a regular customer of over 8 years, we really do love the place and want it to be as good as it has been before! The last few times we have been ( 6 or 7 in last 2 years) , weve found it can be extremely slow service- 1/2 hour between courses, not offered desserts/sides/more drinks, having to ask for cutlery and condiments, plates not being taken away, having to try to grab a staff member to get our bill. The staff are trying their best, but they are mostly young and probably inexperienced/untrained, which is not great in a busy pub/restaurant. Please PLEASE invest time in staff training!!!

Had a lovely meal out. Have to give credit to the great service provided by Chris and Se who were very attentive and friendly. Compliments to the chefs also - Andy and Jo who have out done themselves as per usual. We will be back.

Great food but service has been very slow on both of our recent visits

Nice and cosy with real lig fires, food was quite good too and reasonably priced, be nice in the summer as there are plenty of outside tables and chairs.

Food good (a two course lunch - cheesy mushrooms and a gammon steak with brilliant chips and perfectly fried eggs) and piping hot, served by very pleasant waitresses. Service prompt and atmosphere very relaxed with a nice real fire. Prices reasonable given recent inflation. Plenty of people around also seemed to be enjoying their meals. Gents loo could do with some TLC - perfectly serviceable and clean but a bit stark - not sure the radiator was actually working in there

Booked for a late lunch with family to celebrate my mums birthday. The waitress who served us was so miserable. The food took forever to arrive. I ordered another drink when the food eventually came and still hadn’t received it when I had finished my meal 15 minutes later. I chased this with the waitress and she said that she would get the drink for me but 10 minutes later there was still no drink. I ended up having to go to the bar to get the drink. The waitress eventually came over to clear our plates and said that she had to sort someone else’s bill before getting my drink and then seemed to pass the blame by saying that it hadn’t gone through and she was in the process of putting it through when I went to the bar even though the barman passed over two drinks so clearly it had gone through. There was no apology from the waitress and she remained miserable throughout. She didn’t once smile. It’s such a shame that the service was so poor. We’ve all said that we won’t be returning due to this which is a shame because the staff have always been lovely and the service has been great when we have been previously.

Had a great buttermilk chicken burger here, serve by Ross, Louise, and Phoebe who were all lovely. Great food cooked by Andy and Dan. Also a nice cozy fire lit on a cold day!

Sunday Lunch roast simply fantastic, servers a great nice pub

Visited the Sandpiper for the 1st time in a little while, not having read the recent reviews we were really looking forward to some good food as we have previously enjoyed. Upon arrival we were left waiting for what seemed ages (about 5 mins) without being acknowledged whilst a few staff were serving at the bar and at one point 1 member of the team walked past the queue without even acknowledging us. However after a disappointing welcome we were finally greated by Jaqueline who was a chatty and really engaging host. She showed us to our seat by a roaring log fire which was so welcoming on a cold day. She was attentive and took our order prompty The meal came quickly and was perfect. We will definatley visit again and despite the few poor reviews I would encourage others to visit too. The hospitality industry is having a tough time with increasing salary and fixed overhead costs but people like Jaqueline make visiting a local pub for a lunch a nice treat.

We have been many times before and the Sandpiper is one of our favourite places to eat. The evening did not start out well as we were stood at reception (alone) for a few minutes before being acknowledged and shown to our table. That is the only criticism. The drinks arrived quickly and the menus were in the waitress' hand. The food was excellent, competitively priced, very palatable and our young waitress was knowledgeable, attentive and excellent at her job.

Lovely charming pub, dog friendly and a great menu.

Went with my wife and daughter I ordered a burger and my wife and daughter both got a steak, food was a bit slow to arrive, when it did it looked good except my daughters and mine was cold I don't mean a bit but cold l informed the server and she apologised and took it back and asked if my daughter and I would like a free drink, when food came back it was hot but just thrown on the plate it didn't resemble how it looked the first time and it looked and tasted like my daughters chips we had sent back had been refried and put back on her plate aswell as the tomatoes on the vine being missing I couldn't be bothered sending it back again as we were supposed to be having a family meal together and my wife had pretty much finished hers.

Lovely evening. Very accommodating especially with people with allergies and disabilities inside. One note for the owners is that all of the disabled car spaces were not being used by people with blue badges.

Went for an evening meal with friends. Had a voucher for 50% off main course. We all had rump steak which was cooked perfectly, The chips were hand cut proper chips. Parking great in large carpark.

Went there a few months ago for a friends birthday, id said i would do a review and forgot. But come back a week ago and it was still just as lovely, the burger was juicy and absolutely perfect, lovely staff. The only down fall is the pricing, but that cant be helped

Had a boxing day meal here and thought it was fabulous. Great staff very warm and friendly. Food was lovely and 3 courses for £36 amazing value! Lovely cozy pub too. Looking forward to our next visit 😁

Lovely food from the Christmas menu, good service and nice atmosphere

Very disappointing visit. We booked a table for 3pm to accommodate my elderly mother in law (93yrs) Service for drinks was very slow - there seemed to be only one member of staff for the whole restaurant. She apologized for the slow service. Food was ordered from the festive menu. 1 starter and 5 main courses with the intention of ordering 5 desserts. Starter arrived with an apology for the slow service - again. After a long wait the main courses arrived. Turkey was lovely and moist but the roast potatoes were awful, dried up and cold. Desserts were ordered with another round of drinks. Drinks arrived but the mug for the tea was unwashed with food on the outside. We waited and waited and waited for the desserts but in the end we had to abandon the visit and leave - my mother in law was too tired to wait any longer and wanted to get home. It was after 5pm by this time. The bar was busy but the restaurant wasn’t. We still only saw one member of staff serving food and drinks in the restaurant. I dread to think what service would be like if it was busy. Over 2 hours for 1 starter and 5 mains. Total bill £163.70 This was supposed to be a Christmas treat as at 93yrs old she doesn’t have many left. A very expensive and ultimately disheartening afternoon.

Excellent gastro pub food, great value for money & super friendly professional team.

Had our usual get family together for Christmas only this year outshone all the others. Isobel was the very best hostess being super efficient as well as in the background. Well done you ! Food was outstanding.. thanks to Andy,Amy and Jen. But Isobel needs a five star review of her own . Such a fantastic experience thank you

Sunday lunch was delicious the best I've had in a while. We were served by Abbie today who was lovely and really looked after us. We love this dog friendly pub and can't wait to return.

Lovely surroundings & decor. Very overpriced on both average food & drinks! Service is terrible as the empty plates stood on the table for 45 minutes. Quiet evening so no excuse. Wouldn't recommend & won't be returning

Went for some lunch with friends was served by Chris, food was amazing, Chris was very friendly and attentive. He looked after us and made effort to make conversation with us which was lovely. He’s a credit to the business. Would 100% recommend. Joanne the head chef was working and her food is lovely. Will be booking again thanks guys.

Ordered 2 burgers with chips today at £16.75 and £18.95 food was cold and chips were not even edible was offered fresh chips when we had nearly finished which we declined and manager just walked away. Would never eat in this place again

Food was superb. Front of service needs improvement. Just a simple 'hi, someone will be with you soon' would have been more pleasant than being ignored by 3 members of staff.

Came here for lunch with my friends and family. Food was amazing and service was really good also, I had the beef brisket sandwich which was amazing. Staff were amazing will be back soon.

Kept standing for ages near the door, waiting to be shown to a seat. Not enough staff to serve at the bar and to see to visitors. Lovely interior. Great menu and delicious food, although very few prawns on the prawn cocktail. Service slow as the pub was busy and as I say, not many staff although those that were there were pleasant!

The venue is special to us as a family. The food is ALWAYS great, always well presented and well priced. The staff are fabulous, have a friendly quick-fire repartee. And They all liked our little doggie! Who was also made very welcome. A lovely family experience, made all the better by the friendly staff. Thank You....A credit to the Sandpiper!!!

We weren’t informed about the extra charge for gravy with the pie. We were surprised to find out it was £1.95 each on top of the meals. This was handled by a different staff member from the young lady who served us for most of our visit. That being said, Grace, who served us for the majority of the time, was absolutely lovely and a credit to your team!

We had a lovely meal (group of 9) Service from Alex was fab… she even took our photo… saved having to do selfies!!!

We really enjoyed our meals and were well looked after by Alex who was pleasant and helpful.

We had a table for 10 for a family and friends get together. The welcome was good with the staff initially helpful, drinks were offered and delivered quickly, food orders taken promptly, however that’s the only positive feedback. The food was very poor, overcooked vegetables, tasteless pizza (including missing toppings). Cutlery had to be asked for multiple times and for multiple courses, when cutlery did arrive it was dumped on the table for us to sort out ourselves. The wait staff were surly when asked any questions and obviously not happy in their work. Multiple items were unavailable, particularly a problem for vegetarians. The venue was a pleasant location, but mostly empty by 8:30. The standard of the food will be most of the reason for this I expect.

Holly was our server she was extremely polite and well mannered, the atmosphere was positive and lively, the food was excellent and beautifully presented by chef Joe, the mini chorizo sausage from the bar snack menu was unreal. I couldn’t recommend more!!

Our first experience here for lunch and it was amazing, fresh, homemade food. Lovely staff and a real warm cosy atmosphere. Our server chris was very polite and welcoming, we will be returning and definitely recommend.
