I do love The Rutland Arms and visit quite regularly. When they get it right here, it’s unbeatable, and they got it right when four of us visited for a family lunch in December. We all chose different main courses and, apart from my slight disappointment that the kitchen had run out of apple sauce to accompany my roast pork, everything was spot on. One of our group had roast beef, one went for the fish and chips and the other person chose coachman’s chicken. As well as the perfectly cooked veggies that were served with the dishes, we shared a couple of portions of cauli cheese and it was all divine. My roast pork was tender, lean and melted in the mouth as, apparently, was the roast beef. Prior to our mains, two of us had the carrot, coriander and coconut soup, served with lovely crusty bread, and it had the most gorgeous flavours. I loved the croutons, too, which were lovely and crunchy on the outside with a nice softness inside. Timings were perfect, with just the right amount of time to relax between the courses when I could savour the utter deliciousness of the soup. The other three managed deserts, one crumble and two crème brûlée, and, although the latter is my all time favourite dessert, I was stuffed to the point of thinking I’d need to be rolled out of the place if another morsel passed my lips! Service was faultless. With drinks and 10% service charge, our bill came to just under £166 which, I felt, was excellent value for money. It really was a perfect family lunch.

The food was dreadful and expensive. Can’t say it any plainer. Schnitzel was burnt and poorly presented. Pasted was soggy. The very worst was the waffles which had been microwaved and were solid! Just the two us for a birthday meal with one drink each and it cost £91!

Booked here after we read the reviews of the place we were going to go to that were not flattering.....we were not disappointed. From the warm welcome to the lovely surroundings, attentive staff and amazing food what was not to enjoy. We normally eat and go, but we bought a second bottle of wine and sat in the relaxed surroundings enjoying it. Highly recommend and will definitely be back.

Just popped in for a couple of beers but love this place ( and the beers are cheap ), very clean and we also had some bar food ( sharing platter ) which was very good. Hopefully the next time I write a review about this hotel is will be as a past guest. Why more locals don't use the facilities is beyond me. Give it a try it's full of character unlike the chain pubs nearby.

We arrived at the hotel on a Friday evening as part of a weekend break - we had dinner included on the first night. The menu was pretty good - not a huge choice, but enough - it was served and presented well and tasted fine. The only issue was that our first choice of dish wasn't available - going into a weekend, I would have hoped this wasn't the case, but second choices were fine.We also had breakfast at the hotel on a couple of occasions - this was good and exactly as a good hotel breakfast should be - plenty of hot and cold options and produced to a good standard.

Stayed for two nights in a lovely room across in the old stable block with meals taken a step or two across the road in the Rutlan Arms. Parking was a little tight but manageable.Even though the Hotel was busy the Service excelled as did the meals which we thoroughly enjoyed both in the restaurant and the Bar.Good choice of Continental and English breakfast or some of both. Adjoin table requested Kippers and said they were the best he had ever tasted both in quality and the served size.Certainly nudging the top end of a four star grade. Lovely weekend at The Rutland Arms Hotel. As soon as we arrived the staff were very helpful and that continued throughout our stay. Meal on first night was very nice but the mains could have been hotter. All very tasty with good portions. Main hotel is separate to the annex (across the road) and parking is limited. Guests block each other in which wasn't a huge problem as the staff know which car to move but could be an issue for some if your impatient. Some parts of the hotel are a little tired but everywhere is clean, tidy and this wouldn't put me off staying again. Stayed in the annex, bathroom a little tight but enough room once the door was closed. We stayed using a discount voucher so a good deal.

We popped in for a quick drink and sandwich, the wife had a jacket potato with salad and bolognese and my father in law and I each had the bacon and brie with cranberry jelly toasted sandwich. The food was brilliant and looked so amazing and tasted so good and yet was actually very cheap for what we had. The bar side that we ate in was just lovely and clean with some really interesting decor. The lady and gentleman who served us were such good people who were of the same standard as the food and the surroundings. Booked a 2 night break through the Wowcher deal which included 3 course dinner and breakfast each morning, paid a supplement for a four poster room as it was a special occasion and we were allocated the Dickens suite, it did not disappoint, the room was spacious and clean with the most comfortable bed we have ever slept in (in a hotel) there was ample tea/coffee supplies with lovely biscuits too! The only thing I could say would be the shower is not very powerful but this was not too much of a problem. The hotel itself was very nice, right in the centre of Bakewell with free parking across the road in their courtyard, parking is a little restricted for space but we didn't have a problem, parked outside the Antiques Centre and reception gave us a disc to put in the car so they knew we were residents. We chose to have the meal on the first evening of our stay, booking into the Square Restaurant for 7.45, the meal was lovely, and very good value at £25 per head if you don't have this included in your package, my partner had the moules to start and I chose the chicken, black pudding and bacon salad, we both had the lamb as a main and of course we had to try the Bakewell Pudding as a dessert but one of us had the cheeseboard and we shared both, I wasn't really impressed with the pudding, nothing wrong with it just not to my taste but the cheese was delicious, note there is a very small supplement for the cheese.Breakfast both mornings was hearty and hot and really sets you up for the day. What really makes this hotel is the staff, they were all very helpful and polite, wouldn't hesitate to recommend this lovely little hotel and with the Wowcher deal its excellent value for money even with a supplement for a four poster.

Stayed with one of the online offers, so the Rutland was for us very good value. Evening meal which was included on the first night was alright, but nothing to rave about (unlike our second nights meal at The Peacock!). Staff friendly and helpful. Room ridiculously warm, even with the radiator off and the window wide open - in January! The other thing worth mentioning is the "ramp" located at the side door, this may well be fine for those in a wheelchair (although other reviews suggest maybe not), but for those with mobility problems but under their own steam, the ramp was very narrow and its position actually meant that you could not reach/use the existing handrail, which made it feel unsafe. Tip for others, use the ramp to go into the hotel, but try the main steps to leave....

Stayed at this hotel for five days. Had booked The Greaves four poster room 4. Not impressed. Could hardly get through a narrow door and the room was overlooked by offices on the other side of the road. It was like being in a gold fish bowl. A net curtain would have solved this problem. Spoke to Dominika, the deputy manager, who very kindly moved us to the bridal suite. Couldn't have asked for more. As you can imagine lovely room with a view down through the town and to the hills in the distance. Remember this hotel is in the middle of a small pretty town. The absolutely wonderful thing about this hotel was the quality of the food and the friendly, helpful staff. We had booked half board so ate in the restaurant four evenings and in the bar for the steak special the other evening. Every meal was excellent. Cost of wines good too. Would definitely visit this hotel again. It is old but it has character.

Our double rooms were fairly small but well appointed with crisp bed linen and soft fluffy towels.Staff were very friendly and helpful on arrival and throughout the stay. Our offer gave us evening meal on the first night and we were prepared for a mediocre meal as we had paid so little for the entire stay but we were more than pleasantly surprised; an interesting and varied menu from which all 4 of us could happily have chosen any dish. In the end we ordered mussels to start with and they were delicious and served with crusty home made bread. the main courses did not disappoint either and we enjoyed pheasant and beef, all beautifully presented and extremely tasty.Breakfast was also of a very high standard with the smoked haddock and poached egg receiving a resounding thumbs up! At each meal we were served by attentive and well trained staff and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. We will definitely return.

I agree with the lady form Nuneaton who stayed here at Christmas with her husband. Poor food/service & a bumbling fool for a manager. The canapés where hard & quite tasteless. We even saw the manager handling the canapés with his bare hands!! Disgusting! He left us standing around in the restaurant because he couldn't find our table. When the food came it was of poor quality, served with rock hard vegetables. The only enjoyable part of the meal was the mackerel & the ice cream with fruit. Very poor value for £79.00. We did complain to the manager, he said we were the only complaint he'd received & didn't expect any more. The arrogance of the man! People don't like to complain on Christmas day but on this occasion we felt we had to. We did get our glasses of wine free & a bottle of not so good cheep fizz. Considering the manager was the front of house & was his job to meet & greet, he did a poor job. We thought he was dressed inappropriately, wearing a tatty tweed type jacket with elbow pads & a mismatched pair of trousers. No thought or effort put into that outfit. We over heard the lady from Nuneaton talking to the manager about her husbands diabetes. He called himself a serious diabetic who could eat anything from the afternoon tea trolley consisting of scones, jam & cream. Not helpful!. I work with diabetic patients & specialist each day but I won't be passing on that little nugget of information any time soon. Nor will we be returning to the Rutland for any type of mealagain. Very poor. If you are an individual who enjoys the food at the Rutland, then good for you but if you travel a little further afield, then you will find much better produce cooked to perfection with maybe a little more value for money.

This hotel is a must-stay for a holiday in Bakewell. It's perfectly located in the centre of Bakewell and seconds walk from the various bus-stops that you get all local bus services from. The hotel is split between two buildings: the main hotel and then the courtyard building situated directly across the road; my Mum and I stayed in the latter. We booked single rooms and expected single beds but they were actually double beds, and the most comfy matress I've ever slept on! I lifted the sheets at the end of the holiday to see what brand it was! Lovely bedroom/bathroom - everything you need and very clean and cosy. The room was made up every day and plenty of fresh towels supplied. Don't be put off staying in the courtyard building rather than the main building; it really was lovely and is a 60 second walk to the main hotel. Just take care to cross the road at a 'safe' point (you'll see what I mean!). Also, I would say the courtyard might be better for disabled guests or those less mobile, as there are 6 ground floor rooms. Whereas I don't think the main building has a lift or any ground floor rooms, but check with the hotel first to see what would suit any special needs. Very quiet at night which, as a light sleeper, I really appreciated!Breakfast was good; usual continental options and very nice cooked options. The coffee was very good quality ☕️ Only had dinner at the hotel once but that too was very nice. Staff very friendly and helpful. Nice bar area with open fire which they lit (late Sept). A lovely tradional, attractive hotel with an interesting history (check out their website). I booked approx 6 months before our stay and thought the nightly B&B rates were very reasonable. I would absolutely stay at the Rutland Arms again and my Mum also loved it.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

I stayed at the Rutland Arms with my partner for two nights in June 2016. We were attending a wedding in the local area and many of the wedding guests also stayed here. The room rate was expensive, similar to the cost of a decent hotel in central London. Yet our experience was very poor, here’s why:A lot of the rooms are in an ‘annexe’ located on the opposite side of a busy road to the hotel. This road is on a bend and I almost got run over twice! The rooms are very small and lack character. My partner’s parents room smelt of damp, which they put up with for the first night. They were offered a pitiful reduction on their rate for this night and then moved to another room on the second night. All the rooms were incredibly hot and disrupted our sleep. Most guests had their windows open all night. It was mid-June yet the radiators were on in the corridors! All the wedding guests complained about the showers, they lacked power and we spent ages getting ready. The hairdryer was cheap and basic. I think a maid visited our room because the bed had been roughly made and towels stacked on the towel rack. The attention to detail was non-existent, at almost £150 a night I would expect the sink to at least be wiped over. Many of us ate and drank in the bar. The average cost of a meal was £10, however the drinks were pricey. A £100+ bill for 4 mains, 2 bottles of wine and couple of pints. The barman/waiter was distant and slow to respond.Breakfast was another disappointment. Running between 8am and 10am sharp. Select your cooked items from a dirty menu and wait half an hour for it to arrive. Both mornings my bacon was too dry to eat. We asked for some sauce but it didn’t arrive. We returned from the wedding around midnight and a rather patronising man let us in. We asked if the bar could be opened but our request was declined. We politely accepted this and were shocked to be spoken to like naughty school children returning past bedtime! The car park is small and a jigsaw puzzle trying to fit everyone in. The management did assist with this but it didn’t make for a swift check-in. I will say the hotel is ideally set in the heart of Bakewell. Close to shops, farmers market and other tourist attractions. We were ripped off! There are lots of other hotels in the local area so I would hunt around before booking a room at the Rutland Arms. Note there are two accounts for this hotel on Trip Advisor. Search both The Rutland Arms and Rutland Arms to find them.

Check in was easy and we had room 10 at the top of the main building overlooking the town. Although there was a note in the bathroom stating that if a bath safety mat was required contact reception, it was a very high sided bath to step out of and with the shower integral to the bath, it was a little hairy without anything to hold on to, so perhaps a handle or bar on the wall would have been good. The sink was incredibly low as was the mirror which cut off our heads!. My husband is 6ft and myself a couple of inches shorter, so pretty standard. The room itself is very small and there was only room for one bedside cabinet which was inconvenient as I had nowhere fore my tea, watch, phone etc. Breakfast is cooked to order and was very nice and tasty. The staff were lovely and so friendly and helpful. On check out I mentioned how small the room was and the lady stated it was a single and she immediately discounted it so. I have no complaints, but be warned.... I would stay again, albeit not in room 10...

Pazienza.

Ok, so there were 14 of us, but it was mid-afternoon and they advertised afternoon tea! Unfortunately, the staff didn't like the idea of this many people, so we were greeted with a less than cheery 'have you booked?' It didn't get much better from there on. They weren't busy, but the two waitresses made it plain that we were a bit of an inconvenience, which was a shame, because there's a decent chef in the kitchen producing good food, and the prices are reasonable. Pity. Still, there are many other places to take our business.

This hotel is a Grade one listed building, so it is querky, unique, loved. Don't expect a homogeneous glitzy hotel. It has charm, history, a fabulous central location in a stunning little town. I am sure that each room is unique in some small way or other. Ours was spacious, and had gorgeous views of stone houses and the church. The reception rooms are full of character, and reflect the love shown by the hardworking staff. Service is respectful, caring and first rate. The food offered in a variety of menus, is fabulous; beautifully cooked and presented whether eating in the dining room, bar area or as room service. Breakfast is superb. The price of eating is also very pleasing. There is car parking across the road from the hotel in it's annex next to an antiques mall also owned by the hotel. Bakewell has a lovely mix of charming shops, pubs and cafes, and the town is surrounded by glorious countryside. We will be back.

Me and my partner stayed for 1 night at the Rutland on the 3rd of March. We stayed in room 17, which was the Dickens Suite. The room was spacious and I defiantly recommend upgrading to the one of the named rooms, it's well worth it! The bed had a memory foam mattress which was a nice touch. Drinking making facilities, ironing facilities and hair dryers were available in the room we stayed in, along with complementary toiletries. We really liked our room, it had good views of Bakewell and surrounding hills. The room was really nicely decorated as well, very modern and fresh, it was really nice to stay in. The only things we both found annoying was the shower, it's very weak and it took me ages to wash my hair. The bath when full also drains even if you made sure the plug is secure, by the end of your bath there will be no water left! The room was also really warm at night, we turned off the radiator, the room was still to warm to sleep so we had to open the window, to listen to traffic and church bells all night. We didn't sleep to well but the bed is extremely comfortable. We didn't stay for dinner at the Rutland instead we went to a nearby pub but breakfast was lovely! A good choice of different foods, meats, yoghurt, cereal and loads of hot food that you could order. Cannot fault the actual location of the hotel as well. It's location is superb everything is right on your door step! Me and my partner fully enjoyed our stay and would come again!

Had lunch in this hotel restaurant in Jan 2016, the waiting staff were very friendly, sat down at a table, but had to ask for it be cleaned, the young waiter who'd only been in the job a few day found that task a bit daunting!. We ordered the roast beef Sunday lunch, when it arrived the beef was raw, they quickly took the meals away and replaced with cooked beef which was tough to eat, it was a cheap cut of meat. the rest of the meal was very bland and not worth the £12 we paid for it.

We were in the annex - a secluded courtyard across the road - by choice, as I would have found the stairs quite difficult to negotiate in the main hotel. Quite cold in the room, but an extra blanket was delivered very quickly when requested, and staff couldn't have been more helpful throughout our stay. The restaurant was busy for dinner, but the food slightly disappointing, and unambitious. On the whole though, we had a lovely stay here - a prime central location in this charming town.

We have become regular diners here, every couple of Sundays, on the basis of their 2 courses £11.50, 3 course £14.50 menu. There is always plenty of choice including a quality fish dish (last week was Baked Salmon), two meats (Beef and Pork last week) and a vegetarian option, along with very generous helpings of freshly-cooked vegetables, and similarly the desserts, we chose the homemade Bakewell Pudding and ice cream and the Fudge cake, both of which were very generously portioned. We were also offered to have the Beef cooked to our liking, which was a lovely touch, and it came out perfectly. Very friendly staff, a quaint restaurant with a welcoming fireplace and out of all the restaurants we have eaten at for Sunday Lunch in the Peak District in the last few years nowhere comes close for consistently great traditional fare, plenty on the plate and value. It deserves to be so much busier, I noticed local eateries charging more or less double for two or three courses while we walked round. Don't be put off thinking the Rutland will be charging hotel prices, it's not even charging as much as the local restaurant prices! Will be back in a fortnight!

This hotel's food is a real disgrace. This is not based on a single meal but experience over time. Never organise a party or lunch gathering. You will be overcharged for dreadful food. And as for their Christmas day food, I talked to friends who were outraged -grossly overcharged for truly dreadful food. The Hotel is a laughing stock in Bakewell for its dreadful food. The new owners have spent a huge amount, it would seem, on making the rooms and ambience very pleasant. What a tragedy that they can't get a decent chef and kitchen staff to match it.

It takes quite a lot for me to write a review but I felt that it was a must in this case. We recently held our wedding at the Rutland Arms and it was truly amazing from start to finish. Hazel and her team provided a fabulous service and made sure that the day ran smoothly. We have been overwhelmed with the number of comments about how great the day was. The organisation, care and attention to detail is second to none. I stayed the evening before the wedding with our maid of honour and sampled the evening meal which was cooked to perfection. Breakfast is plentiful and cooked equally well. Our wedding breakfast consisted of an afternoon tea, and our evening buffet was a mix of hot and cold food. All went down well with the guests. The hotel itself is hard to miss standing proudly on the main road through Bakewell. Parking can be a little tricky but staff are happy to help direct you to the nearest alternative if the car park is full.Rooms are nicely decorated, many with four poster beds.We hope to have plenty more visits to the Rutland Arms in the years to come.

The hotel is lovely unfortunately when we arrived we were told to take a seat in the bar no one took our coats, and after about ten minutes the waiter brought us three glasses of Preseco my daughter asked for a winter Pimms as stated on the menu but was told there wasn't any, so asked for a normal Pimms but told they hadn't any, large holel without Pimms!.We went through to the restaurant which was very pleasant our starters arrived which were ok but we asked for some marie rose sauce and was given a very watery tasteless pink sauce. The sorbet arrived next which was fine. Then the main course arrived a large plate piled up with Turkey roast potatoes parsnips stiffing mange tout swimming in gravy accompanied by a bowl of over cooked sprouts green beans and carrots. During the hour or so we had been there at no time did anyone come to our table asking if we wanted a drink or to see the wine list so in the end I went to the bar and got a bottle of wine a bottle of water and a J2o.Next to arrive were the desserts my Christmas pudding was fine my husbands sponge was ok but my daughter was presented with a chocolate log about 8in across and 2in deep and was completely outfaced. Coffee and cheese were served next with no sign of the mince pies that were on the menu.

We were originally given a room across the road, however because we wanted to access the Wifi in room asked and were moved into the main hotel building and were given a lovely room overlooking the square. Lovely light filled, spacious and clean room. Felt instantly at home. Breakfast was included in the room rate and was very good with a broad selection of hot and cold dishes. The staff were all lovely. Of the six hotels we stayed in our UK Road trip this was my husbands favourite.

I stayed at The Rutland Arms last night, on business with 3 colleagues. After reading reviews I was a little bit unsure of what to expect... However.... I was not disappointed. The welcome into the beautiful building was with warmth from both the history and from the staff. I had a room in the courtyard which is just over the road. It felt as if I was the first guest to stay in the room as it was so clean and fresh. The building was extremely old however the bathroom fittings were new. The grouting in the bathroom was so clean and white. The ceramics were new with a fab bath. However I have been informed that not all rooms have a bath, some have shower only. The TV was a good size on the wall with great reception. The bed was so comfortable with crisp linen. The towels fresh. There was super tea and coffee choice and toiletries in the bathroom. The hairdryer was very powerful and as I have long hair, was a treat. The only negative comment is the power from the shower was slow, however I managed. Then to the breakfast. If you like fruit, yoghurt, toast, fresh juice, cereal, nuts and croissant/pastries then you will love it. If you choose poached egg, bacon, sausage, beans and mushrooms (as I did) then you will be delighted as all amazing. The bacon was thick however cooked to perfection (I am not a fan of pan fried in fat swimming on the plate - this wasn't). One of my colleagues had scrambled eggs and they were amazing, not running in water. I guess what I am trying to say is everything was cooked to order, fresh and of good quality. The attentiveness of the staff was tops. They were catering for first timers like us and seasoned residents that they knew by name. All in all a great and unexpected experience which indicates to me the importance of Trip Advisor to share balance the reviews. Would definitely recommend.

Stayed for 2 nights midweek on a discount voucher which included one night's evening meal.Room was adequate if a little unclean. The carpet needed a good shampooing and more attention to detail would not have gone amiss. Alright for what we paid though. The room had a 4 poster bed with canopy which made everything rather dark and it was almost impossible to read in bed owing to this and inadequate bed side lighting. We believe that new owners bought the hotel 5 years ago. The hotel carpets did not seem to match the Georgian feel of the building. The Dining room was large and well decorated and it was here that the worst part of our 2 day break took place. As our stay included one evening meal we chose to eat in on the first night. I had a tagliatelle dish to start but the pasta had been cut into 2 inch lengths which made it extremely difficult to pick up.My choice of rib eye steak for main was a disaster. First of all we were informed that service may be a little slow as they had a large group of Masons in another dining room. I can only assume that the Masons had the services of a chef and the Kitchen Porter was given the task of cooking my steak unsupervised. My medium rare ribeye was cooked until it was a deathly grey in colour; the poor animal had been slaughtered once and then killed again in the kitchen. The chips which accompanied it we a pale straw colour and had been cooked at such a low temperature that they had become limp and flaccid and full of oil. Peter, our waiter, was excellent and full of apologies. Offered to have another one cooked for me (not on your life) or to choose something else. I declined his offers so he then went to reception to clear both our meals off the bill and provide us with a credit note. As helpful as Peter was we noted that at no time during our stay did the management or chef approach us to apologise which I find unforgiveable. It's not a bad place to stay, in the centre of town, with car parking opposite but We wouldn't stay here again

Stayed here with a deal for two nights including dinner. It's in a great location and there was good flexibility in the use of the dinner voucher. Enjoyed the breakfast which was generous and had quality ingredients on the whole. We had room 21 which we were disappointed to discover was in an annex away from the main hotel. Although the room was spacious it overlooked a busy road and was immediately next to the main door that served other rooms. So this room is fundamentally flawed in terms of noise. I would stay in the hotel again but not in this room - earplugs are a necessity if you want a peaceful night. Other than that a very nice experience at the hotel.

Arrived here at the hotel and already knew we would be staying in the courtyard due to my mums disability. The disabled room was perfect. 1 large (2 singles) bed in the middle of a very big room, with 2 bathrooms. one especially adapted for disabled use and the other for the other person sharing. Clean and very well kept. Our room was on the first floor, however much smaller, was perfect for our needs for a 2 night short stay. We booked our second nights evening meal in the perfectly set out dining room and it was just devine. The service was lovely the waiting staff we so very polite informing us that there was a wait and would be like more drinks or bread rolls. This was not a problem as we had decided to spend our evening there anyway and whats the point in rushing when you are eating in a fine place. We ate from the alacarte menu, and to say my Dad is a fussy eater is an understatement. From the Tempura Prawns to the home made vegetable soup to the Rack of Lamb and Fillet Beef Stroganoff. Everything served very warm on hot plates, was 100%. I could not rate this meal high enough and we have eaten in some fabulous restaurants in and around Manchester City Centre. We had a wowcher deal for two nights B and B with one evening meal. The hotle is located right in the centre of Bakewell on the roundabout. It is a splendid Georgian building with a fine entrance and grand staircase. The decoration is traditional throughout although the bar is very modern. Parking is rather limited at the stableyard across the road which is shared by the antiques centre double parking is allowed if you are happy to leave your keys at reception. The rooms vary in shape and size. We had a huge double bed (2joined singles) in a smaller room (14) at the rear of the main building. It was clean and comfortable. The evening meal was excellent (blade of beef and salmon main courses) three courses for around £25 each. The breakfasts were generous varied and well cooked. The staff were polite and working hard only although on sunday morning the breakfast room was so hectic (after a whisky tasting session the previous evening) so it took us nearly 50 minutes to get our cooked meal -otherwise it would have been five stars.
