The Royal Standard (Ruby's) in Portsmouth

Great traditional English boozer ..no frills just a great pub..especially on Rememberance sunday everyone gathers here 🇬🇧

On the most important day of the year for a naval pub in a naval town, the Standard had a pair of lovely ladies singing 40s. 50s and 60s songs to a busy audience. The Standard is a must visit pub whenever I am in Pompey.

Called in last night 24 September, whilst the guy behind the bar was polite and welcoming there was a woman in there who was blind drunk, abusive and belligerent. This great pub is not what it was unless I happened on a very bad night.

Best pub in Portsmouth by a country mile, proper boozer full of characters. Loads of Naval and military crests adorn this place. When I come back to Portsmouth I will definitely be back.

Good location and friendly staff! Beer is ok but I didn't like it at all given that glasses were pretty dirty. Recommendation: no, don't go there!

Kronenburg and Strongbow Original, great little pub, friendly staff.

Good little pub full of navy related items. I was last in day the Queen died, a singular experience I won't forget. Worth a visit if anyone wants proper Pompey.

Ruby's was HMS Antrim Stoker's local back in 1974. Great pub, great memories for me.

Visited Ruby's Wednesday of this week. Dirty glasses and not very nice tasting beer.

I originally posted an assessment of this pub,&on reflection it didn't read as I wanted. The Royal Navy is second to none. Lots of signatures of it's heritage decorate the walls. Important we cherish our Naval heritage. Important, too, that we value our public houses. No food available,but I feel a good vibe here always. Relaxed. The Bar Manager has anecdotes about his work with pop stars. Stars. Fab.

Friendly staff and very sociable.

We went here yesterday with some work colleagues and how accommodating were the owners! This pub is small, yet homely and rather cozy too. Drinks are well priced and music was really good using a juke box. Nice to choose music to play that you want to hear. We even had a dance in this little pub too. People were friendly, the staff were fun and even had a dance with us too. Great little find this one, when we in the area again, we will be sure to visit this pub.

Hands down the most friendliest pub in Portsmouth. Classic and great atmosphere and lots of naval heritage and memorabilia. Good beer and chatty friendly staff. You know you're welcome here..autism friendly also for myself which is a plus because I have found my locals of Waterlooville beyond a disgrace.. too many of the small towns love riff rafs and only locals and know how to bully but I just love all the Portsmouth locals. They all relate and its nice when staff will be decent and admit you don't have to change for nobody. I can't be a fake something I'm not. I love a good pint laugh and Catch up and the customers will happily be good friends. The mother Shipton is also a great boozer..forget the ancient stories on them. The florist. The froddington..too many good places to mention in this town. Bar staff couldn't be more professional if they tried.

I had the pleasure of visiting The Royal Standard back in early 2015 while on deployment. Great service, great staff, great atmosphere, just an all around wonderful experience. If I ever have the chance to visit Portsmouth again, I can and will be paying them a visit.

Super nice, very typical pub. Good atmosphere and at the same time serene. A good choice of beer and two ciders on tap. The decoration inside is very naval which goes well with the Royal Navy of Portsmouth

Perfectly good city centre boozer. Used to be first stop for matelots on a run ashore in Pompey and has loads of navy memorabilia.

Nice and tidy, every year they have a charity collection for war veterans and also have a war memorial service too. I hope if I am correct.

As more and more corporate pubs become clones of each other, the Royal Standard remains amongst the few left to truly reflect the community, in this case its association with the Royal Navy and navies throughout the world. A good selection of drinks, well kept and served by a friendly and welcoming staff under a very competent manager. Always worth a visit.

Great wee pub. Whenever my wife and I are in portsmouth we call in. Guinness is good.

Welcomed by Bob, a retired Royal Navy signal man, spirited conversation followed enlivened by shots of Pusser's Rum. A proper Navy bar, friendly, a great place to wait for the train to London.

Easily the best pub in Portsmouth. Friendly, good beer, a genuine lovely local. We stopped in for a pre train beer (we're londoners) and three missed trains later we left, totally in love with the place
