Stayed over for one night work related visit. Check in was good, very straightforward. Car parking was very tight and difficult to locate however a quick google sorted that. Bed was comfortable and room was nice. Some areas of the hotel looked dated and could do with an upgrade. Disappointed that although supplied with a kettle and means to make tea and coffee, also a glass…there was no bottle of drinking water available in the room. I would expect that at a basic level for the star rating. Visited the pub, friendly bartender. Breakfast was very basic, and small portions on the cooked side, variety of pastries, juices and very tired looking pots of fruit to help yourself to. The service in the restaurant was really good though, very attentive staff. My Room was really warm (as a bonus there was a fan in the wardrobe) and when I mentioned it upon checkout I was told ‘well it’s an old building you know’ quite bluntly. Reception clerk could do with more customer service training if I’m honest. Would stay again but nothing special.

Have been here a few times before and always had good experiences. Sadly, today was not up to usual standards. Service was incredibly slow. Food was barely warm. I had the hanging chicken which was quite dry with a few bits of burnt pepper or onions. I found a waitress and asked for some mayonnaise to go with it and to cheer up a salad that had no dressing on at all. We were debating whether to go here or the cornstore and sadly, we made the wrong decision. My family member had the burger and whilst it was a big portion, it looked very greasy. I had sticky toffee pudding for desert. The caramel sauce was lumpy and congealed as if it was reheated. My family member had the creme brûlée and said it was very good. Today was a treat from a family member for my birthday. Upon sitting down, I saw on the menu, there’s a birthday offer for a free main course and dessert if you can prove your DOB which I could. I enquired about it and said my birthday was in two days. The waitress said I couldn’t do it as it wasn’t my birthday that day. Seemed very mean as I explained to her I’m working a ten hour shift on my actual birthday so am unable to celebrate on the day. She shrugged and didn’t seem bothered. I have given three stars with past experience in mind but today’s visit really was worth less. I won’t be in a rush to return

The menu Reads, delicious, but it ends there , garlic focaccia bread , £4.95 , is in fact ONE Single slice , cut in half , a smear of butter , no flavour at all , speechless , needless to say that went back ! Hanging Bellypork kebab etc , reads amazing , comes out , 1x strip of bellypork , cut into 5 pieces , onion and paper , laid on a plate with frozen chips , the only thing hanging is my mouth , again speechless ,a mere £17 for this plate of disgrace , everything is bought in , and shoved out , Not for me Thankyou ! Felt sorry for the young waitress tbh , who was so polite and professional! 10/10 for her 👍

At the end of a long day spent exploring nearby Powis Castle & Gardens the natural follow-on seemed to be dinner in Welshpool. The Royal Oak Hotel provided just the right solution. Arriving with my wife promptly at 6.00 p.m. we were shown to the reserved table of our choice, where we were able to relax into comfortable seats to peruse the wine list and menu. Taking our time we enjoyed an aperitif Bottega Poeti Rose Prosecco whilst awaiting our starters of Teriyaki Pork Bao Bun served with spicy mayonnaise, and Smoked Salmon with pea and dill bonbons. For our main course the choices were Coachman`s Chicken. Butterfly chicken breast, smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, slaw and fat cut chips; and grilled whole Plaice accompanied by Provencal vegetables, samphire and rocket, roasted peppers and caper dressing. In an unhurried and relaxed setting the food fulfilled our expectations in terms of cooking, presentation, seasoning, and taste. Table service was particularly good, and notably during each course a discreet enquiry was made as to satisfaction. With only myself able to find room for a dessert I opted for a classic creme brulee to complete the meal. Reviews are all, of course, about personal experiences and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves in the cozy and atmospheric environment. Our fellow diners appeared to encompass residents, reserved tables (like ourselves), and walk ins, which we thought represented a good market mix. A very pleasant ending to our visit.

This was a nice meal for two on a last minute overnight stay in Welshpool. 2 glasses of wine, 2 starters, 2 mains and a bottle of wine came to £113. For starters: The crispy cauliflower bites were hot and crispy with a delicious peanut sauce. The salmon bonbons were OK but needed more salmon and an extra one to make it 3 per serving would have been even better. The mains consisted of: pork belly hanging kebab with chips and Asian slaw and the dirty burger with loaded fries and onion rings. The kebab came with more delicious peanut sauce and the slaw was crunchy and slightly pickled. The burger was tasty but overloaded with bacon and cheese bechemel sauce on top of the pulled pork, perhaps a step too far! Overall we were pleased with the service, the venue was clean and the food was quite good.

Terrible attendance. If you are not a guest and arrive at the restaurant through the pub, the pub attendant tells you that you should go to the restaurant attendant. I reached the pregnant waitress at the restaurant who told me to return to the pub. I returned and waited more than 10 minutes without any service. I got up and went to question the pregnant woman, at which point the other concerned attendant went to see what was happening. Only then did someone come to assist us. I won't go back and I don't recommend it

What can I say just disappointed 😞 been coming here off and on for a few years came in Dec 23 had a meal and was disappointed but thought it was a one off not so todays family meal was even more disappointing. Firstly we were told there was no fish ! we then ordered our mains 2 had turkey one had nut roast which was burnt on one side and uncooked on the other !! Hardly any veg I has 2 half pieces of carrot, partially cooked kale and burnt cauliflower cheese!! It the came to dessert and we were told no cream brule or another pudding my husband had a cheese platter which was ok we then had coffee one of which was supposed to be an Irish coffee but unfortunately this one was without the whiskey!!! The restaurant has certainly changed since the change of hands. It was a lovely bright day outside with the sun shining but unfortunately it showed the several cobwebs hanging on the inside of the windows !!! The only really good thing was Heidi the waitress she was friendly helpful and chatty. We won't be coming back sorry 😐

Avoid this restaurant at all costs (if you can call it that). We both ordered our meals, I had a beef dinner which was terrible, the beef was at least 50% fat and grisell and my friends first wanted a chicken dinner but there was no chicken on the menu for a Sunday dinner so she had to order a type of fish dinner which was ment to be cod but when it came out we were told it was hake and the fillet of fish was absolutely terrible the top of it was sooooo mushy, it was like mash potato and the bottom half was hard and it was impossible to cut. I then had to complain to the staff and then my friend ordered another meal and she asked them for a chicken and chips ect meal which they said they could make and the waitress said it would take about 10minutes. When that meal came to use the chips looked good but we're not cooked enough and they were cold, the chicken was terrible it was literally like a brick, I could not even stab it with a folk. Hence as soon as this happened i asked for the bill to leave to eat somewhere else. The one good thing that I can say is that they would not except payment for any of the other food and drinks that we had. I definitely will not be going there again until they have a new chef.

Disappointing. The service and food do not live up to the lovely building. The extremely basic and underwhelming Buddha bowl for lunch was vastly overpriced at £14 and a few fries on the side cost another £6. Everything was a chore from getting cutlery and condiments to forgotten request for water jug. The tomato soup was more like a spicy ragu sauce. Down to the loo and buckets under holes in the ceiling. I've been before and recommended the place but it was not worthy any more. The coffee was nice.

The lunch time menu was surprisingly disappointing for a four star hotel. I had fish cakes which looked as if they had been made on the premises and unfortunately overcooked on the premises as well, unlike the vegetables that we under cooked. They gave me the wrong desert which I declined but the kitchen just put the desert into an sundae dish and put cream over it to hide the contents. They decided not to charge me for the desert and also gave me a discount on our other food. Would I go again - NO!

We prebooked an afternoon tea for two adults and one child to celebrate our anniversary. We chose this venue specifically because of the superb looking childs offering. Sadly when our order arrived they had incorrectly ordered three adult afternoon teas. This left my daughter upset, as there was very little on there she would eat and she was looking forward to what the website showed. The staff on the floor tried their best with the situation, and i can't fault them for that, but it simply wasn't the same as her receiving her actual childs afternoon tea that we ordered. They did the right thing and removed the charge at least as i would have refused to pay it had they not. On the whole, the food was good, the waiting staff excellent, but the booking and planning very poor. Not somewhere i would book again for a special occasion

We had a 3 course Christmas meal and there was so much wrong with it. Not only expensive but the food quality was poor and not much of it either. The lady who served us was nice but the 2 meals and a glass of wine each cost £70 and we left feeling very underwhelmed. Also there was no christmas ambience and the chairs were dirty. I wanted it to be great as businesses are struggling but so are customers and it is even more important we feel like we get value for money. Wish we went to the local Morrisons instead for our Christmas meal.

We had stopped here previously on way on holiday and we did the same this year. We have always been really pleased but this time one meal was very nice (roast beef) and the other not quite up to the same standard (chicken roast). The chicken was supposed to be breast but it had bones in it including a thigh bone and it was very chewy but okish. In addition the gravy was very thin indeed and not very tasty for both dishes and the vegetables were quite hard. Service was excellent though. If it was just the meal I was marking on then it would be an 'average' mark.

What I except due to having a dog you never get the best room, what I find hard to except is the room not being cleaned due to not enough staff, the bathroom blind having mold on it (see attached photos) and window behind covered in black mold. And to complete the trip, although sorted quickly told my bill was nearly double what it should have been. On a plus food OK, but generally would say look elsewhere

Very comfortable room which was tastefully decorated and very clean. Staff are very pleasant and helpful. Reaturant is very good with a great choice of menu. Would recommend as centrally placed in town with safe car parking. Lots of attractions nearby including Steam Railway, Canal Boat Trips and Powis Castle.

We’ve eaten here many times in the four years since moving to mid wales, we usually have a lovely meal out and have enjoyed the food and service but sadly today I have to say we were really disappointed I’d tried to book a table via their website but it kept telling us there was no availability for lunch so I tried to call, this took six attempts to get through but in the end managed to book. although the service was as good as it always is the food was really poor and boring, my partner had the Caesar salad which he described as ok but for £16 you’d expect something better than ok I’d ordered the super salad at £13 which frankly was far from super, it was a strange mix of uncooked broccoli, bits of orange, halloumi and couscous which was not cooked properly. I mentioned this to a different waitress who was now serving us and she said she’d let the chef know. We feel that the fact we were the only two people in the restaurant at the time that more of an effort could have been made with our food.

Visited a few times for a meal. The menu is very good and the food is well worth the price which is a little on expensive side. The service we have found always to be very good. Booking is advisable as it does get very busy.

This traditional coaching inn hotel, has a period style restaurant with a pleasant ambiance. The meals served were of an excellent quality on hot plates. The staff were all very friendly efficient. Parking is available from the rear of the hotel. We enjoyed our dinner experience.

We had a lovely meal, great value, quality food, but thought the service just let it down from a 10/10 to maybe a 9 or an 8. If you do not care for service being great, and people serving you looking happy to be there then this is a must meal. I might be not picking but you can tell when service is genuine, or forced. I would go again because the good was great, and would like to think from a service perspective I was unlucky. Enjoy the area and this hotels great menu.

We parked in the town centre car park, not knowing where to eat in Welshpool. Liking the look of the Royal Oak on the cross roads,

Had a lunchtime sandwich here. Had the Halloumi & Mediterranean Veg ciabatta which came with skinny fries, leaves and coleslaw. Very tasty. Nice choice of seating areas, either in the bar or in the lounge with comfy seating or tables. Quite relaxed and cosy atmosphere.

Perfect!

Nice friendly place to while away a Sunday afternoon with a drink or a coffee. Comfy sofas available if you want to really relax. They serve food although we didn't have time to sample anything the other customers really seemed to be enjoying their food!

What an amazing place. Not only is the building and interior fantastic but the whole place is fantastic. I called in for lunch with my sister and we thought we would grab a quick bite, we plumped for the Royal oak burger. Definitely not disappointed. It was cooked to perfection the accompaniments were so tasty. The service by the barman, Dave I think was excellent and the waitress was courteous, professional and very charming. The ambience of the whole establishment is wonderful and truly a great place for lunch or visiting. Maybe ill give the hotel ago and stay over at it sometime...Please you must give it ago
