So we went on a lovely lil dog walk along some lovely sights. Low and behold, we get to outside the Royal oak and hear the doors unlocking with us knowing we had to have a lil tipple on this lovely day. £9.50 for two haze and 10mins later we're having a lovely sit down in the sun. Absolutely lovely lil pub by the water. The staff are friendly and very welcoming. And the fact they made sure Coco the pup had some turkey just made even better! Honestly 10/10. Will definitely have to come here again!

What a fantastic pub. A must visit. We had a fabulous lunch on Saturday, the team there could not have been more friendly and helpful and the food was great. One of our party had the steak and said it was the best steak he’d ever had, and he’s not easy to please!! Congratulations to the new management, they’re doing an incredible job.

Stopped by for lunch on a busy Saturday without booking and although they were obviously very busy preparing for a large function in the afternoon they welcomed us, a group of four, with open arms. The location is wonderful, even at low tide there’s so much to look at, it must be stunning when the tide is fully in. The food arrived quickly and we were blown away by the quality of the meals as pub food. One of party said it was the best steak he’d had anywhere. We’ll definitely return and recommend anyone to visit this lovely old pub.

The land lady couldn’t have been more rude and unwelcome. Very unprofessional. Hoping to just come in for a nice drink and some food, and instead of kindly letting us know before we bought drinks that they were fully booked (which would have been understandable), we were told very rudely (after buying our drinks) that we had to stand and they didn’t have enough food for us. Kindly a table of guests said they weren’t using all their chairs and let us sit - this is the helpfulness and kindness you would expect from the owner. Following this when we left and said thank you (which we didn’t need to) she rudely lifted her eye brows. Wondering what we had done? Just trying to spend money in your pub and have a nice time. Very strange and unfriendly service and would not recommend a visit

Hadn't been back to the Royal Oak since it reopened. Booked in for a four person Sunday roast. All I can say is AMAZING. Food was excellent and service was excellent. We were served by an exceptional young lady named Ruby. At such a young age she has mastered the art of being attentive without being invasive towards our needs. Having been brought up and gone to school in Hooe in the 60s. Returning to the the Oak after decades was fun. My friend had a coffee and I had an Amstel. We sat by a log fire and chatted old times. I had my first drink in the Oak at a very questionable age in 1974. Sitting down in the same spot where I sat all those years ago me and my Hooe mate reminisced. As we were both driving on our 2nd order I asked for lime and soda. No lime no soda but did hame a lemonade and mango. LAUGH.. We thought about food but they didn't have any. Nor did they have crisps or peanuts. But it didn't matter a jot. This is a really lovely, unique authentic Devon village pub. Back in the days pubs were social places where like minded ppl meet drink and talk. So many so called traditional pubs are now anonymous silent places where ppl stuff themselves in silence with their pet rat or child as there only talking point.,expected to be waited on hand and foot. Well done the OAK for sustaining traditional pub values. My suggestion would be to scrap the food menu. And just have decent pasties, salad Crisps peanuts and a cask ale.

My two sisters and I was spending a couple of days in Cornwall having a nice break and meeting up with family. We stayed in the Lake Side which was very nice and comfortable. We came across the Royal Oak on our first day and as we were staying literally almost next door we went for a meal there last night. We was served by two amazing kind and happy waitresses and nothing was to much for them to do in fact by the end of the evening it was like we where all old friends thank you so much Tammy and Emma. The food was excellent cooked by the Landlord/ Chef to a very high standard. We had an excellent night full of laughter ( yes we may of got a bit loud) but it was an amazing night and one I will never forgot. My two sisters and I were staying in The Lake House in Hooe. We were there to meet with our brother and his family. This awesome pub was a 3 minute walk for us. Found it by chance, the first day sitting outside in the sun alongside the water. The following day we went back for dinner. It’s a lovely old pub with plenty of country atmosphere. You can tell that Lee has been struggling to get things back up and running after being shut down due to Covid, like many other businesses in the hospitality world. Having said that, the food was so very good, service was great but what made our night was Tammy, Emma and landlord/ chef Lee. We just laughed so much and yep we were loud but we also bought smiles to many faces, especially ours. Don’t miss out on visiting this pub if you can help it. Good luck for the future guys x

My husband and I went to The Royal Oak house on wednesday 14th July. We took the ferry from the Barbican, Plymouth, to Mount Batton. We then walked to Hooe hoping to have lunch in a pub. We went into the Royal Oak, at about 1.00am and was told that they were full booked for food until 2.30pm. Another group of people came in after us and they were told that there would be a waiting time for food of approximately 20 minutes. Okay so what happened to the waiting time we were told!!! So we decided to have a snack, ie: crisps and peanuts. We were told they only have Cheese and onion crisps, which was fine. When the staff member came back she said, actually we don't have any crisps at all, in any flavour. Having already ordered drinks we decided to have that and then move on. The toilets were also dirty and smelly. Would not recommend this pub. We walked back to Turnchapel and found a very friendly pub, The Boringdon Arms, with a garden at the back. We had a lovely lunch there and would recommend it.

This pub was in stepping distance from our holiday cottage and what a find. Stumbled inside in a dank Saturday afternoon and were immediately made to feel very welcome by other customers. We had a great night, and booked for the Sunday roast the following day, as advised. We were not disappointed and this is certainly no dainty roast dinner, it was full on lashings of fresh veg, great roast potatoes, mahoosive Yorkshire pudding, plenty of meat and the nut roast would turn any carnivore veggie!! We visited regularly before a broken leg caused us to cut our trip short, sampling many dishes on the menu. Would also recommend the antipasti, halloumi fries and bread and olives. We had a fab, if brief, holiday, thanks to the superb staff and great regulars at the Royal Oak. Definitely on our "must do again" list. Thank you Lee, Harley, Claire and rest of the Royal Oak staff.

We dropped in on spec for dinner at about 7.30. The extremely polite barman immediately warned that he had 2 large food orders and that it would take a while for our order to be ready. He kept us apprised of progress and in actual fact he took our food order sooner than we expected. The menu is well thought out and when the food arrived the portions were extremely generous. The food was delicious - we had Cumberland sausage, chicken burger and the Hunter's chicken - and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their dinner. The chap who served us was enthusiastic, quietly attentive, polite and efficient. The outdoor terrace has been very well updated to provide COVID compliant seating and is a real sun trap. It was quiet in the pub & staff were friendly & service was good however my mussels were tiny & tasted slightly gritty - not the usual standard of mussels I expect (the sauce was delicious though) - my lamb shank was beautiful however the vegetables seemed just like frozen veg from a bag.

I've came here for the first time today and it was quite busy, I had carrot cake and a hot chocolate, the carrot cake was quite nice and the hot chocolate was alright.
