We stopped for a drink and some food. The atmosphere was very friendly. Sadly the food was very poor. My husband had Ham, egg and very soggy chips. When asked about our meal, our waitress asked was it the chips. We are still waiting ti hear the chefs comments. Disappointing as we drove there specially

Visited for Sunday lunch for our granddaughters christening. Staff very friendly and helpful especially with a big order from 34 people. Food was lovely throughly recomend Thank you to all the staff.

We tried the Top oak for the first time on Saturday evening. Can I just say wow. Firstly, being greeted by Simon, the front of house was great, he was polite and spent the time to come and chat in between courses. He made us feel very welcome. The food itself, well, again, wow. Every course was spot on and full of flavour and the presentation was amazing. The chef Peter Bentley and his team absolutely smashed it. We booked up whilst we were there for a Sunday roast in a few weeks time. Thank you very much for a lovely experience. I highly recommend a visit to this beautiful place. Jon.

From the outside this looks like a fabulous place. It is a large pub/restaurant. We chose to sit in the restaurant area for dinner. It was very quiet with only 2-3 tables with diners. There seemed to be only one lady serving. It took 20 minutes for us to place our order. The menu was appetising. Unfortunately the food was not. The cost of the meal was equivalent to eating at the Oxo Tower brasserie in London. The food quality was low-end pub fare. Not to be recommended.

Had heard good things about this restaurant and I was not disappointed. True, the decor needs un update and, if you are sitting in the small garden, you are subject to a lot of traffic noise from the now busy road and we had to wait a really long time for our food (which was strange as the restaurant was not busy and we were having pan-fried fish which does not take long to cook); but the staff were very nice and the food was the best I have had in a very long time! Congratulations to the chef! I would happily wait that long again for such superb food!

I hired the restaurant last night to celebrate with my family & friends and I am so pleased I did. It was amazing. The staff worked so hard and were so efficient and friendly, I couldn’t fault them. The buffet was delicious and everyone enjoyed the food It’s a really lovely venue especially as the evening was so hot but with the outdoor seating and air conditioning inside, it was perfect Thank you Top Oak

Had a family lunch here There were over 30 of us and the service, food and drinks were superb. The staff worked their socks off to ensure that we were all kept "fed and watered" The food is absolutely brilliant with great presentation Highly recommended- cheers✌❤🍻🥂😋

Absolutely wonderful meal as always! As a family we go to the Top Oak most Sundays and never have a bad experience. Food is wonderful with a great variety and service is impeccable. Such a friendly and welcoming atmosphere and very hygienic! Would definitely recommend for Sunday lunch or any other day!

Hastily defrosted meals from the Brake brothers kitchen(probably). Slow service . Sticky tables. Dirty glasses. Not a great lunch experience for the hearty price tag. Everyone in my group was disappointed with the offering.

We had booked the dining area for a reception following a family funeral. Simon and the team were very helpful and had arranged the photos around the room for us and with the Christmas decorations up as well the room looked lovely. The buffet was delicious and plenty of it. The only problem was selecting the buffet items from the huge selection beforehand. The staff were very attentive and we felt welcomed and relaxed throughout the afternoon. We will be back to sample the dining menu very soon.

Absolutely delicious Xmas lunch today. A real yummy treat in these difficult times. Thoroughly enjoyed and most definitely worth a visit even if it is outside and freezing. Made even more pleasant by the lovely Emily who was our waitress.

We recently went for lunch & had a lovely time. It was good to see hand sanitising stations, staff wearing appropriate ppe & track & trace in operation. Food was so good. 2 of us had the 3 cheese mac n cheese which was delicious, I had chicken with mine & it was really tasty. My husband had the fish & chips which was a huge portion & he said it was cooked perfectly. Our daughter went for the chicken Caesar salad, again a very generous portion & she said it was definitely something she would order again. We were all really pleased with our meals & even the coffee afterwards was good coffee. All of the Staff were friendly, chatty & attentive. Simon came over & had a chat & was telling us all about the dishes on new menu so we are looking forward to going back & trying them.

Fantastic lunch with the family, without a doubt the best ribs in the Uk, all covid measures in place and was asked to sign into their track and trace book, great to see Simon back and we will definitely be booking up again soon.

I visit Top Oak usually once or twice a week. Lovely pub in Stapleford Abbotts. Food in pub area and restaurant is always good, never had a bad meal. Simon is a great host. Also attend the Saturday events, when they are on and cant fault the food or entertainment. Afternoon teas are a must as well !

Wednesday night fairly busy in the main restaurant, we were welcomed by Simon the manager nice atmosphere the specials board had some nice choices so I picked hot wings decent amount of chilli then opted for lamb stew not had that for years and I was not disappointed Tasty large portion . All the staff were fast and attentive, my wife and myself will not hesitate to come back again thankyou very pleasant evening

We were a small group of 3 for lunch. All 4 dishes were hot, nicely cooked, and tasty. Service was polite and helpful. A nice surprise at the end ..... they are still offering 50% off the food bill. Very welcome and a nice gesture.

Rare visit to this restaurant. Came recommended in the past.Arrived when it was quiet.Waitress looked dishevelled and unwelcoming - no smile and just seemed fed up throughout the evening. Three menus provided - bar, a la carte and specials!... delay in starters, confusion over mains (wrong food served, further delay). In the meantime offered drinks and dessert not ordered but was for the table next to us. Young girl waitress friendly enough but noticeably inexperienced which was okay and can overlook lack of attention to service but the more experienced waitress needed to step up; smile and be customer friendly! It makes a big difference. We all have our issues but everyone else need not know about it.Hoping service improves as the venue and food is lovely. Shame that the otherwise lovely evening was spoilt by the attitude of a very unhappy looking waitress.Oh...and the flies!!! Unexpected as indoors on a chilly evening.

Just had a meal at pub food was good disappointed with all the service all the staff gave seems they only service locals. After meal was going to have a few drinks but was never asked by waitress or staff behind the bar. There is more to live than just locals.

Had to go up to bar for absolutely everything - alcoholic drinks,jug of water,return empty plates - when government ruling days we were all supposed to be sitting to be served. Had to get a menu off another diner as wasn't even offered one by staff!!!!!!! Then overcharged for wine,..........Frequently go there but won't be going back

Always had a lovely meal in the restaurant but today was in the bar area. The table we had was in a corner and there were big flies on the table, walls and windows. Also flying at us constantly. We asked to move and the blonde haired lady was great and moved us. Unfortunately there were still lots of flies in the other part of the bar. After sitting there for about 15 mins we decided we didn't fancy eating there. We told the young long dark haired girl thay we were leaving due to the amount of flies in there and didn't fancy eating with them all over us. She was quite rude and told me "You will get this wherever you go". Well we did go elsewhere and not a fly in the restaurant!!! This is such a shame as we have always had a good meal here and good service. I know it is summer and there are flies but there were so many and it was inside. Unfortunately no apology from the girl behind the bar. I wish I had take photos as there were so many.

Had a full 3 course meal with my partner a couple of weekends ago and it was perfection. I don't normally review restaurants but every course (Prawn cocktail, tuna steak and profiterole mousse) were exceptional. The decor was classy, atmosphere spot on and the host and our waitress were lovely. The pub looked great too, but the restaurant really wows you when you walk through.The place had a power cut at the end but it didn't ruin the evening at all, the staff were so accommodating at adding up at our bill and letting us leave. WE liked it so much we're going back again Saturday! For 3 courses each (one being a steak) and a few drinks it was under £100, which was a pleasant surprise as I think it was worth more!

Went with friends to children’s charity lunch organised by the landlady it was a nice afternoon and food, also had my husbands 60th party there which was a fab night!!

Lovely place. Really warm friendly service and the food is excellent. The host was really nice and friendly and the food was very good. There's also a nice atmosphere here, often accompanied by live music. The prices aren't too steep either, so all in all that makes this the perfect pub stop for you. Enjoy!

So glad to be able to show support to another local restaurant today as we made a return visit to the Top Oak gastro pub in stapleford abbots. On our previous occasions we've enjoyed a great sunday lunch and what we experienced today certainly lived up to our expectations. As we entered the pub you could see that there were definitely fewer tables in the bar area allowing for people to social distance. As well as this there were also hand sanitizer machines conveniently placed around the pub. We continued through to the restaurant at the rear of the pub where there was once more a hand sanitizer station. In the restaurant itself there was clearly fewer tables allowing for all the staff to move around freely. We were seated at our table before being presented with the menu which has a great selection of Starters , Mains , Roasts , Sides & Desserts.StartersFor our first course we ordered the Mediterranean Prawns with a sweet chilli dip as well as a good old pub favourite the Prawn Cocktail. MainsNow it was time to enjoy two fabulous Sunday Roasts dinners as we chose the Roast Beef and my favourite the Mixed Roast which was a slice of beef , lamb & pork. Both roasts were an absolute treat. DessertWe then finished with two delightful desserts. The first being the Summer Fruits Elton Mess and the other was the Biscoff Cheesecake. I am pleased to say they were both delicious. This rounded of a great Sunday Lunch where the food was good and this was matched by very friendly service from all the team. So if these things are what you want when your out for a meal then I would definitely recommend a visit to the Top Oak.I'd like to thank all the team for their efforts in making everything seem like normal during these tough times that we're in at the moment and to wish them all the best for the future. I have been to the Top Oak a few times before and had recommended often to friends and family. I returned yesterday in a group of 4, seated in the outdoor part which was lovely on a sunny Sunday afternoon. However, 45 minutes after ordering our starters and mains, 2 mixed and 2 beef roasts, the waitress came back to tell us that the kitchen 'only just looked at our ticket' and they had no beef left, so it would be substituted on the mixed roasts and the 2 beef roasts would need to pick something else. We asked for the menus to be brought back - at which point we were then told that 4 other things on there were sold out too! So due to dietary requirements 1 in the party ended up with a children's meal (which wasn't very nice at all!)We then waited a further 15 minutes for the starters to come followed by the mains before the table had even been cleared. In the meantime, the couple sat beside us had ordered drinks and also waited more than 45 minutes with no update from the waitress and decided to leave without paying for their drinks - which coincidentally ended up on our bill!!The food came and was tasty, although after the service and lack of options we decided it would be best to avoid further disappointment with dessert.As mentioned above, when the bill came it had the drinks included from the table next to us, which they clearly hadn't paid for and quite cheekily after the terrible service a note at the top asking us to pay service charge. As a group we would have stayed for drinks although the slow service put us off so we left prematurely. Its questionable that there was slow service as when we went inside to use the facilities there were minimal tables and by the time we left inside was empty with only 3 tables (including us) being used outside. Won't be recommending and won't be coming back.

Four of us ordered starters and mains which were 2 mixed roasts and two beef roasts. 45 minutes passed, and we were expecting our starters, they came out to say they had in fact run out of beef and lamb ‘because the chef has only just looked at our ticket.’ So two of us begrudgingly stuck with the order (even though two of the four meats had run out even though they didn’t offer a discount) and two of us had to change our order. I’m not sure why they didn’t look at our order ticket sooner than 45 minutes, considering the restaurant wasn’t overly busy.We then had to wait a further 15 minutes until our starters came out. The starters and mains were lovely and it is tasty food which is one positive point. However I wouldn’t go to the top oak if you want good service. The table next to us walked because they had waited for 45 minutes with no update, and no waitress came to them for drinks during that time.The bill then came out, we noticed there were two drinks on there that we didn’t have. They craftily added on the two drinks the two customers next to us had, who walked out and didn’t pay. We raised this and they had noticed straight away and took it off the bill. I was looking forward to my first visit here, but it wasn’t what I thought it would be.

Always first class, food , service and atmosphere. Really recommend. Had the Sunday roast twice now and the meat just melts in your mouth.

We visited this very friendly family run pub for a family celebration on a large table . Started in the bar for an hour , went through to the table , we were served well with very efficient staff , the food was delicious and we had a variety of dishes , no complaints . It was a Sunday and we had a wonderful family day with some young children at our table who were made welcome .Just a word of advise if you don’t like young children running around ( not sure where the parents were )I would swerve Sunday’s as it was rammed with children .Next time I go I will choose an evening .

15 of us went for Sunday lunch to celebrate a birthday. The staff were very friendly and attentive. Nothing was too much trouble. The food was delicious. We will certainly be visiting again.

Just back from a family birthday meal , nothing was too much trouble for the staff who were attentive but not overbearing . The meal was well cooked and presented with a wide range of choices including gluten free . Wine list was reasonably priced we had Prosecco and a Cote du Rhône would definitely recommend a visit and we will be back thankyou

We went as a large group for a 30th birthday meal on Sunday. First time I had been to the pub and the service as soon as we walked through the door was fantastic. Plenty of staff on hand so we were not waiting for long for anything we needed.Menu choices were great, lots of choice for the kids too.Roast dinners were gorgeous, lamb shanks cooked perfectly.

Second time eating here and I’ve not been disappointed with any of the food. I ordered a Merlot to drink but I found this was very vinegary so I called the waitress and she got me a different wine which was much better. I had the seabass off the specials board and it was a superb dish. I would like to see the young waitresses smile a little more but I would also like to say thanks to you all for a great evening

We recently had 20+ close family at The Top Oak for Mum's 80th birthday meal and I cannot praise the venue, manager, or staff enough. Very accommodating and good communication helping us sort menu options and allowing us to put up decorations to make it a very special occasion. Everyone had a good time and the food and service was spot on!

Came in here for lunch, but wished we'd kept on driving. It needs a bit of work inside as there was a leak in one spot and one of the windows was cracked. There wasn't much choice for beer, which was a surpise these days. Only one person working the bar so serivce was a bit slow.

I booked the top oak over 2 months ago for my husbands 40th birthday with all the family. I have been there at Christmas before and it’s very nicely decorated and the atmosphere and food was good so thought it would be a great place to have the family meal for my husbands birthday. It started with a phone call around 11:30 on the day of the booking, stating that the restaurant was extremely busy and if I wanted to come at the time I had booked for I would have to sit in the “conservatory”. If I could come later I could be in the main room. Unfortunately this was not an option as I have a 2 1/2 year old and the meal would have ended to late for him, as well as trying to organise everyone else who was coming at short notice. I was told it was full waitress service, there would be other tables sat there so the atmosphere would still be nice. I accepted as I really had no other choice. On arrival the “conservatory” is actually the walk way between the bar and the restaurant/waiting area. The other tables were actually people waiting to be sat at their tables. They weren't dining there they were having drinks whilst waiting. Myself, my husband and my son were sat next to the entrance to the toilets. We were subjected to a cold blast every time some came in the entrance as we were sat directly in front of the door. I had to ask for the door to be locked as my 87 grandfather was getting too cold. The service was adequate, things were no longer available on the menu and having to wait some time for plates to be taken away. I will say the majority of food was really good other than the lamb shanks which looked and tasted like they had been deep fried. I was so embarrassed that I had organised this venue for everyone and people were disappointed. So after my husbands chair was kicked for the 10th time bu people walking through I had no choice but to complain. I spoke with Simon, who was very apologetic but did say that he had rung and told me. My answer being that there’s not really much I could have done on the day of the booking the weekend before Christmas. Again like I said he was very apologetic and said he would do something with the bill. We then ordered our deserts, my father in law asked for crumble but there was only two left which had already been ordered, so he asked for Xmas pudding with custard and cream. The waitress then replied ‘custard and cream, that’s disgusting!’ My father in law was quite taken back as that’s quite offensive. The bill come up and Simon had taken three main meals off of the bill however had cheekily added service charge. I didn’t want to make another fuss at the time as I didn’t want to make more of an issue so we paid and left. However I felt I had to write something on here as it really did put a dampener on my husbands family birthday meal and I was really upset and embarrassed that something I had organised for the whole family left everyone feeling the same.

Food was average to good. Wine poor. Toilets covered in urine with no locks on either cubicle which I imagine is an unsuccessful attempt to stop the rampant cocaine use.

Visited last night for a murder mystery evening and we all had a fantastic night out! The actors were excellent and really bought the show to life - haven’t laughed so much for ages.The food was amazing and the staff were great. Cannot recommend enough - such a fun night out!

It was our first visit in many years and we were pleasantly surprised. We had a round table in the restaurant and, once we were settled were presented with the specials board. Knowledgeable explanations of each was given of where items had been sourced.

We eat here quite often but on a recent visit the menu had changed, I think because of a new chef. I was disappointed as the dish I normally have a pasta dish was not available. There was not a similar alternative. I had fajitas which were ok.

This is the first time we have been to this Pub. It was recommended by a friend. The service was first class and the staff were very helpful. The was a party of 5 of us. I had the mussels, They were excellent and I enjoyed them very much. I do have these on a regular basis at home. This was followed by Sea Bass and veg. Again it was excellent. The only comment a few more veg would have been useful. Those who had deserts also enjoyed then very much. I was happy with the price. The host was very attentive and checked that everything was OK. Would we go again certainly.

Couldn’t get a restaurant booking but had same menu in bar. Believe it is cheaper - you order at bar but meal is served to you at your table. Excellent food and excellent service and very reasonably priced too. Highly recommend it and will return.

Visited the restaurant/pub with my family including our 3 year old daughter. The welcoming was friendly and speedy. The internal decor was done to a high standard but retaining some original features. Simon who served us and the waitress were both friendly. There was good choice of food on the menu and we also had the option of specials which I had the lobster for the first time. Food can promptly and was super super tasty. Simon was very friendly and even recommended some local attractions for our daughter. It felt like we were in Michelin star restaurant but prices of the food did not reflect the same! They were very reasonable in fact. I.e lobster was £35. We were told where the lobster was sourced and provided with information on the different parts of the lobster and why they taste different. Was a truly amazing experience and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Highly recommended and will definitely visit again. Cheers Simon

We was a party of 6 and went along for the Jersey Boys night, we had a 3 course meal which was lovely I had the salmon which was cooked to perfection and a very generous size. The staff were lovely and provided table service throughout the evening. The Too Oak is lovely and we had a really good evening

I went with some friends on the weeknd 2 try tea time selection.Whilst the tea time selection was amazing and faultless,the service was not so good.It was a shame as my friends came all the way down from Walthamstow by London transport.I picked up from Romford station and we all jumped in my car and drove down.The pub was not even mega busy so could not understand why the barmaid took so long to get the manager to our table to discuss future booking for a party.She walked past our table several times and did not say anything to us either.In the end we walked out and the barmaid even cheekily said bye bye to us.My friends and I were amazed and delighted with the selection for tea time but were so disappointed with the after service .

Visited with our freinds on a Saturday night, unfortunately our visit coincided with a large party. The food was very good and the service brisk, very noisy, not sure if this was because of the large party or the design of the room, but having to shout to each other is not really ideal. The smaller tables in the restaurant play second fiddle to the main table and it is a litlle tight, for some reason several people on the adjacent table had trouble with the chairs, they fall over when they get up from the table, this happened on at least 3 ocassions, very annoying!! This is not a cheap restaurant, the food is good but it needs a tweek to justify the cost. At the end of the meal the bill arrives and a 10% service charge is added in scribble on the top of the reciept, very unprofessional!!

Unusual selection of courses , not a great selection of vegetables or vegetarian meals. The staff and service was quick and friendly. The décor inside was black with mould and plaster was falling off. Prices were not cheap and tables a little cramped. Wouldn't recommend or return.

Very good venue in catering for our Mum's birthday party. Food, drinks and service all excellent. Would definitely go again.

Came here for a meal with the family and was not disappointed. The meal, service, and atmosphere was brilliant. We ordered the ribs, one roast chicken and two triple meat roasts. Amazing! All plates were cleared and everyone extremely satisfied. Will definitely return in the near future for another roast.

What can I say about this place, it was amazing have my birthday party here in this pub. Cannot fault anything wrong with this place - really nice how the top oak pub staff treated us here. there bad point what so ever, even thing thinking planning my big 30 here!

We were looking forward to a nice pub lunch in a garden on a sunny day. Upon arriving we ordered Aperol Spritzes, but the staff asked us to repeat this order several times before then having to consult with the bar as to what they were. I would not think that this is an unusual drink order on a summer's day!

Lovely pub with a great beer garden, can be tricky trying to find somewhere to park though if the car park is full.

Decided to give it a try as often drive past and wonder what the food is like. Friendly welcome and nice atmosphere, varied menu and reasonable prices. I had the fajitas which were wonderful, the portion was very large and as much as I tried I couldn’t quite finish the meal. My partner had the steak pie, and said there was nothing at all wrong with the meal, which is high praise coming from him. Would definitely return

We popped in for a small bite to eat on a Sunday. We shared three starters all which were really good. Prawns, pate and Ribs. I would recommend them all! The staff were really friendly, especially the lovely Kerry who looked after us. We sat on the high table near the door and my legs are pretty short so Kerry helped push me in!! Above and beyond customer service right there!!

Came here for Sunday lunch with the family for a birthday meal. Food was really good and large portions. The roast was lovely and all starters were great. Staff were very polite and would return. Parking is a bit tight.

Excellent, the London Pride was in good form, roast Lamb and accompanying veg etc very nice. Simon very welcoming and cracking host. All staff excellent. Will return.

Fantastic lunch today with the wife and great to see Simon back, went for the mackerel today off the specials board

We had lunch here today & it was delicious! We shared the baby back ribs for starters & we both agreed they were the best ribs we’d ever tasted. For mains I had the pork tenderloin & my husband had the mackerel from the specials menu, both dishes were so so tasty. My husband had the sticky toffee pudding with custard for dessert & he thoroughly enjoyed it.

We must have driven past this pub hundreds of times without actually going in but I'm delighted to say that after our visit on Sunday I'm looking forward to returning. The Top Oak is situated in the lovely Stapleford Abbotts area which for us is only a fifteen minute drive away. We actually didn't even know they had a restaurant even when I booked using the form on their site. Even when I spoke to the manager at the end of our lunch he told me that a lot of people had said the same. We arrived on Sunday and the bar area was very busy. To the left of the bar and along the side there are tables which is where you can enjoy a drink and also dine at. It was then I noticed the restaurant at the back of the pub and it was only then obvious where my reservation was booked for. Apparently the area used to be a barn but has now been converted in to a nice restaurant. The restaurant itself has a bar at the entrance end with the tables set out along in three rows and can easily accommodate small or larger parties. We received a nice friendly greeting before being shown to our table. We ordered a drink before taking a look at the menu which did have a good selection to choose from including of course the Roasts. There was also the extra choices on the Specials Board to which is where I ordered my starter a fabulous Fried Monkfish with Pickled Samphire , Dill & Herb Breadcrumbs. Off the Sunday menu we chose the heavenly Sticky Ribs & Coleslaw, Salt & Pepper Squid & Chilli Jam & the Mediterranean King Prawns with Garlic Butter & Sourdough. Each course was very tasty and a great way to start It was now on to our mains where we enjoyed the classic Pie & Mash with Liquor. From the fish section a fabulous Crab , Chilli & Lime Tagliatelle and two of the fantastic roast dinners. One was the Roast Lamb and the other was the amazing Mixed Roast of Beef , Gammon & Lamb. Both roasts were accompanied with a huge Yorkshire Pudding , Roast Potatoes and a delightful selection of fresh vegetables. These roasts were definitely worth the visit on there own. We then needed a well earned rest before we got to enjoy some delicious desserts. We chose the Sticky Toffee Pudding , Honeycomb Cheesecake and from the specials board the Bread & Butter Pudding & Custard which was pure heaven This ended an absolute fantastic Sunday Lunch where the food was great and the service from the young female staff who were all very polite & friendly was excellent. As well as the fact that nothing was to much trouble really added to our dining experience. I would definitely return for another fabulous roast but would also like to visit at a different time and try the dishes on the other menus. I would definitely recommend booking a table in the restaurant as it really is a nice venue to enjoy a great Lunch or Dinner.

We recently celebrated a selection of family borthdays at Top Oak and were really happy with the service all round. Great food, excellent service and a nice time had by all. Keep doing what you're doing and we will be back for more!

Went for family Sunday Lunch (10 of us). Car park was full and inside was really busy. Thought we might be the biggest group, but no there was at least one much bigger group. Despite the numbers service was excellent and the food was served pretty quickly considering numbers. Staff were really on the ball and kept a close eye on us without being intrusive. Food was well cooked and delicious - we asked for extra roasties and veg and that was provided without a problem.

Myself and my wife visited The Top Oak as we had been recommended by friends.

Firstly the service is excellent. Nothing was too much trouble. The Sunday roast was nice as were the starters. We were there with a large group and everything was seamless.
