Great little Pub, ploughman’s lunch is a thing of beauty, bring a good appetite as the portions are very generous, Harvey’s beer straight off the barrel and the staff are so friendly - 100% recommended

An archetypal English Country pub with low beams, low lighting and beer taken straight from the barrel; yet there’s a warm welcome on arrival, friendly smiles throughout your stay and good home-made food. Don’t be fooled by the “pre-Covid” menu on their web pages – they are so busy, they don’t have time to up-date. Just go and enjoy as we did, as a group of 20 old car enthusiasts. Poop-poop….am returning very soon! Recommended

Very disappointed with today’s experience after having been to this pub on multiple occasions and enjoying nice food (albeit on the pricey side). We walked with the family from nearby village which takes just under an hour one way, to hopefully have a bite to eat and a drink. Upon arrival, I grabbed the menus from the porch where they are kept, only to be rebuked by the land lady who unceremoniously announced very loudly “kitchen closed at 2!” This got the regulars, who sat around the bar, head turning. My husband ordered couple of drinks and some crisps which cost him the price of a meal anyway and we sat down for ten minutes before going back home (another just under an hour walk). Ok, so maybe we should have checked what time the kitchen closes for lunch (we got there just before 3pm) and it’s not their fault we chose to walk all that way and back, but the fact kitchen closed at 2pm could have been communicated to us in a more friendly manner, rather than making us feel unwelcome and silly for not knowing the obvious. Like I said, I am sad, as we had multiple lovely meals there before and did not expect to be treated like unruly kids. Needless to say, won’t be coming back in a hurry and certainly won’t recommend (which is something we always had in the past).

We had a very nice meal sitting out in the garden at this old country pub on a hot summer evening. The food was good although the menu was a bit limited as 3 main courses were not available including the fish dish of the day. Hopefully that was just a blip as we would be keen to come back. Our Fish platter shared as a starter and wild mushrooms on toast were very good. Service was friendly and efficient.

So visiting from Australia, we were looking for a little country pub with traditional and historical value in every sense and that’s exactly what we got okay. The 750 year old building may have had low ceilings and been very rustic but what do you expect from the pub and buildings dating back to the 13th century we really loved it. The staff were really nice. We had a great Sunday roast and a whole rusticness was exactly what we hope to find. We did hear a couple of from London whingeing about how it wasn’t the service they would expect at the Ritz and to be honest with you. I am sick to death personally of people who have very limited scope and understanding you don’t travel to Vegas and complain about the casinos. Anyway, Other than the whingeing city people I would highly recommend for a country experience for anyone who wanted to get off the beaten track in England. The host also came out to say hello. He said he had family in Australia. He wanted to make sure we were happy with our meal he had one of those. Amazing smokes on his face that kind of wild look made me feel right at home highly recommend anybody looking for a country experience. I would like to think there are people from the city who appreciate this type of traditional country pub anyway certainly will be going back with my wife, Lucy, who is from Petersfield and she loved it.

Have just spent an hour in this pub Staff fantastic ambience calming Unfortunately this visit was spoilt by an obnoxious customer who thought it was his right to constantly hit his dog through out our visit. This was clearly seen by the staff and nothing was said? People on an adjacent table also noticed and decided to leave quickly We found this hugely upsetting.

Phoned to book on Friday for a 2pm lunch for three people on Sunday. Arrived at the pub at 2pm on Sunday and asked where our table was situated and the member of staff pointed towards the corner of the bar. We squeezed our way through the gentlemen propping up the bar to find a tiny table with benched seating access down one side only as the bar was along the other side. I wish I had taken a picture as this was clearly not a table that anyone would ever sit at and the fact that it also never had a reserved sign on it like other tables around the very busy bar, yet know one had decided to sit at it speaks volumes!! Why take our booking when they clearly had no room for us!! Luckily, The Wheatsheaf at Albourne helped us out last minute for a fantastic Sunday roast. We won’t be returning to the Oak anytime soon.

Stunning old country pub tucked away in the countryside--everything you'd expect a quality English pub to be--warm and cozy; friendly, welcoming staff; sleepy doggos tucked under bar stools; great beer; and spectacular food. Came here for a Sunday roast with a dear friend and had an *amazing* roast dinner. She chose the lamb, I had the pork belly with crackling. Heaping portions of food--thick, juicy slices of perfectly cooked meat, roast potatoes, no less than four other vegetables, Yorkshires, gravy, the lot! Absolutely delicious. Cleaned our plates and were hankering for some crumble and custard, which sadly wasn't on the menu that day, but had a lovely raspberry and almond frangipane instead. Attentive but not intrusive service, good value for money. Can't wait to come back!

This was our first meal at this pub, though we've called in a few times for a drink when passing. We were very impressed with the quality of our roast dinners. This is a very cosy pub on a winter's day and surprisingly small in terms of the number of diners. It must do many more covers in the summer when the outside seating is in use. A plus point was the gravity-fed Harvey's bitter but the wine was good too.

I've been there twice to eat now. A tiny peeve is that the website's sample menu is much more interesting than the actual menu, which didn't change between my visits, BUT.....the people who served us were just so lovely. One guy not only took our pic on my phone as it was our wedding anniversary, when the bill came they made the first round of drinks complementary as we were celebrating. The food is really excellent, fresh, interesting and really nicely cooked, no fancy stuff, just nice gastro pub fare and affordable, service was prompt and I just felt they wanted us to have a good time. For me, to be in a building which dates originally from the 13th century is such a bonus, I think the pub should make more of this for us history nerds. Nice outdoor area too, for summer food and drink, nice big car park, just ticks for everything.

Today was the first day of opening after lockdown. Two of us cycle around the neighbouring Sussex Lanes. Prior to leaving we asked the landlord if they were open, and could we have a table. They have COVID friendly sheds and outside tables, and restrict access inside, but everything is well laid out. We were both cold, and my friend asked for a Bovril, Mike the landlord got one from his own kitchen. We then had absolutely delicious food, hot sweet onion soup, garlic mushrooms on toast and 2 risottos, washed down with really fresh Harvey’s, happy days indeed!

It tasted of vinegar and was undrinkable. One of our group was given a practically flat lager but at least he could drink it. We had lunch and most chose the roast. The beef was really disappointing being chewy and lacking in taste. The ploughman’s was ok but just okAll in all I couldn’t recommend this pub as there are so many great pubs in the area. What a merry dance this pub leads the walker! You find yourself with the invidious choice between roads plagued by traffic, especially commercial vehicles, and footpaths that criss-cross confusingly. If you are coming from London and intend to get to the pub in time for lunch, a peak train is advised in order to catch the hourly 100 bus from outside Burgess Hill station to Hickstead or Sayers Common. Then the walk, which looks little more than two miles on the map, turns out to take considerably longer. This is one of those occasions when you wonder whether Ordnance Survey are playing tricks on you.

Top marks for being a classic ‘Olde English Pub’. Loads of beams, fireplaces and so on but set in a slightly odd area which seems to be rural but is littered with industrial estates. Rather a contrast between inside and out; next door to the pub are caravans and wooden huts/cabins which lower the tone and the garden could do with a little TLC.

Everything was perfect until the food came. We had a selection of ploughmens. Mine was made up of a handful of uninteresting leaves, more than a day old bread, prawns full of roe and roll mop. It's such a shame, just a little more effort on the quality of the food would have made all the difference. Fresh prawns with no eggs, fresh bread, interesting salad, some pickles.....

We have been staying in this area for many years on our twice annual trips to England, and since we discovered the Royal Oak we have been coming on each of our visits. On this visit to The Royal Oak, we sat in the snug, the pub room in an early, historic building with low beams, and a fireplace in the tavern. This pub has been operating for generations, and we were so grateful to be here again, no neon lights, loud music or "fruit" machines--not even a cash register! Freshly prepared, locally sourced food, and perfect gravity fed ales, decanted from kegs lined up along the wall. We recommend making a reservation, the pub can be quite busy, lots of locals--hardly any tourists. We had two pints of Harvey's Best ale to start. For dinner we both chose the slow-cooked Moroccan-spiced lamb, served with cous cous and herb salad, which was tender and delicious. A chocolate walnut brownie with sauce followed for dessert, which we shared! We will return in the Fall to sample more of the ales and delicious meals—this is a truly wonderful, old-world pub experience.

Came here for lunch. A completely new venture for us. Delightful old pub with wobbly floors and low ceilings. Delicious lunch of roast pork for me with the most fabulous gravy and my husband had the fish stew which he said was very good indeed. Really good Yorkshire pudding to. Usual problem though roasties are never like home cooked ones but I can live with that. Puddings were some of the best we have ever had and my husband said the chocolate brownie melted in his mouth. My apple sponge was probably the lightest dessert I have ever had. We had coffee in the sun trap garden. We sat surrounded by dogs, butterflies and even a horse who had come with his owner! Very good indeed. Oh and the young men serving are wonderful.

Speaking as one of the unpleasant clientele from the local trailer park I have to say that everything about our visit to the Royal Oak was excellent. From the minute we walked in we were made to feel welcome by the two young gentlemen serving behind the bar, who were friendly and attentive all evening. We delayed our food somewhat because we got chatting to some of the regular customers who also made us feel right at home. When we did finally get around to eating we both thoroughly enjoyed the hearty sausages and mash, which was everything that this dish should be. In fact the sausages were so good that my partner cheekily asked if they had any spare that we could buy and take home! We were cheerfully obliged on this request and I’m looking forward to eating them tonight.

A new experience for 22 of us. Food ordered before we set off, indicating whether we would be back in 1+ hours or two hours. Coffee availble at the start on an honesty basis but it was only instant. We wre given the annex for coffee and later to eat in - initially it looked a bit forbidding but as we filled it to eat it came alive and was by then comfortably heated with a log buring stove. The furnitute is old and loved and very comfortable. The meals were served in the two sittings and were excellent from a varied menu different from most pubs. Our drinks wre take in the bar and we moved into the annex when the food was served. It can be recommended for table of two to eight in the bar. The beer is excellent.

We booked a table for 12 in the private room for a Christmas Sunday lunch. Yeh service was great, food very good (sharing platters, mixed carvery, crumble and mince pies) and drink great too (the Malbec in particular). It’s a very rustic, rural and traditional feel, way out in the country so you’d need to seek it out.

I used to go to the Royal Oak as a teenager and at 18 had my first legal drink there! I love this pub as it reminds me of home (I now live in Australia) and visit when I return. All the best to it! Food is great too.

Easy parking and lots of outside tables and chairs. Feels deep in the countryside. Small bar, open fire, unpretentious. Friendly people. Loved it!

We had lunch here last week but what a delight. An old fashioned pub with a small but great menu. It is great to find a village pub that hasn’t been modernised and still retains its rustic charm.

I have been here often, but recently it has gone downhill somewhat. They have a new till for food which appears to be slowing things down, and co-incidentally prices have shot up. Harveys is now a £1 a pint more expensive that another local pub. The last sandwich I had here had cheap sliced bread. Overall left disappointed, not the attraction it was, so may be trying other local houses.

This pub is always busy and the fact people have to drive to get here says something about it.

We booked late and the pub were so helpful, allocating us a large table which seated our party of 8 adults and 5 children and a dog. The Sunday roast and home made puddings were excellent and the bill very modest for all of us including wine and soft drinks came to around 250 pounds sterling. They served smaller portions for the children and large jugs of water. All the staff were very pleasant. The Harveys beer was excellent. Local produce well served.

The atmosphere, service, food and beer are great. The Harveys Best Bitter is particularly good. Between us we had 4 different meals and all were very good.

We were there last weekend. Usually good food but the roast was sub standard. Soggy yorkshires with hard carrots and cold green veg. Friendly service and nice looking pub.

Great cosy place. We stopped for a coffee on the way home. The menu looks great with a variety of different meals and the portions looked huge and smelt amazing. Can't wait to go back there and try out the food.

Delicious home cooked food and friendly service in this totally unspoiled pub - sadly Wineham Lane is closed at the southern end ( thanks to HDC repairing one of the bridges) but it's always worth taking another route to our favourite eating place. Depending how near you are - it's also a lovely country walk. We met four cyclists there today and they lived in Brighton. They had put the bikes on the train and cycled from Hassocks !

This is one of those pubs you wish you lived next door too. Fantastically kept beers Harvey’s I can personally recommend was served in a straight glass and was kept just right. The staff are friendly and it’s all very traditional.

A group of us ate here and had a fabulous evening. The beer on offer was really well kept and there is a good range. The food is excellent and if anything, the menu understates what the dishes are....a number of us has the pasty which was huge, unusually tasty and looked absolutely fantastic. Great evening, great atmosphere and well worth a visit

Beer straight from the barrel, and they serve Harveys. Really friendly atmosphere and efficient staff. Plenty of parking. Roast dinner on the Sunday was just excellent. Child and dog friendly, open fire. The list just goes on. A proper pub

On a recent trip to The Old Mill, the food and service was amazing. BUT, they put a service charge on the bill. Which is unacceptable. You give a tip if you are happy with the meal, you shouldnt be expected to give a tip . Dont think i will be going back there in a hurry.
