Its a nice pub, beer is well served, but regrettably the food is bang average. Burger and chips would be one example, clearly a frozen burger and frozen chips, but still at around £11. For £11 a proper hand made burger would be expected. Fish and chips, once again, frozen fish and frozen chips. I think around £12. There are pubs around this area that are charging similar prices but are using fresh ingredients and frankly are doing a better job. So, overall, a very average experience with no reason to ever return.

Don't bother paying attention to the one star review, this place is lovely! If it's out of your way, go the distance, we did and we were so happy with it! The place is lovely and homely, the staff were equally as lovely, the garden is gorgeous and well maintained and the view from the bottom of it is beautiful! The food, oh god, it was EXCELLENT! I will admit I was expecting much from the kids chicken nuggets but they were made with a really nice seasoned batter, I tried both that and my girlfriend's lasagne and it was stupidly nice. I had the burger with cheddar and bacon and I've never had such a tasty, crispy shelled burger that was so juicy on the inside. Would thoroughly recommend!!!!!

We came here as it’s the local pub to a guest house we are staying in for the week, first impressions weren’t great as they’re still advertising their Christmas opening hours in mid January. I understand that this is a small village pub catering in a limited market out of season, but... When we walked in the pub we both noticed how bright the pub was with no attempt to create a cosy atmosphere, the lady behind the bar was friendly and approachable and did make us feel welcome. More alarm bells sounded when we saw how large the menu is, a huge blackboard over the bar offering around 20 or so main dishes, considering we are in mid January, offering that amount of food suggests it’s not a fresh food offer which sadly it’s not. I chose a 16oz rump steak to be cooked med rare with peppercorn sauce and my partner ordered scampi and chips. The portion sizes are big and the scampi was to be expected, cooked from frozen accompanied by frozen chips and a poor side salad of iceberg lettuce topped with a handful of chopped tomatoes and peppers with no dressing. My steak was actually 2 8oz rumps accompanied by the same frozen chips, onion ring and garden peas, the steaks were both overcooked with a slight taste of iron which says the steak was old and past it’s best and the peppercorn sauce came in a jug the size of a tea cup and was tasteless so clearly came from a carton. We didn’t receive any enquires as to how our meals were during our time eating and only a cursory “how was that” when our plates were cleared, no queries to if we wanted more to drink or if we would like to see a dessert menu, so we paid, or tried to but their internet was poor so declined payment. I do feel if they were to reduce the menu, pay more attention to freshness and turn the lights down this place would be so much more appealing.

The wife and I stayed in drimpton for a week's brake. We got into drimpton lunchtime after a 4hour drive and tried to get a drink in the royal oak but it was closed. Our host where we stayed told us that the pub is always changing hands so we went back again in the evening when it had opened and found the landlady very friendly and said we could bring our dog in as they are dog friendly. They have got a very good selection of ales and our drinks were reasonably priced the food menu was limited to about 6 items fish scampy and burgers ect plus home made pizza that looked good as we didn't actually eat there. It's a nice clean comfortable pub with a nice garden and plenty of parking. Its a pity about the opening times as it's not open at all on mon and Tuesday and will shut if empty.

We visited one evening for tea as it was near our cottage. The landlord was very hospitable and the pub was comfortable. The menu is limited to about 10 meals plus pizzas of which there are about 5 choices but we all found something to eat and when it came the meals were all home cooked and nice. With a few drinks the bill was just over £50 which I was quite happy with. It’s not fancy, but you get a nice meal with a nice welcome.

In an era when so many village pubs are closing, The Royal Oak stands at the heart of little Dorset village of Drimpton, well loved and supported by a local community of farmers and folk who commute to jobs in nearby towns. Friendly, down-to-earth Chris Davies and his wife Sandy run it on behalf of Palmers Brewery of Bridport while their daughter prepares the food. Originally from near Stoke, the love the serene and peaceful atmosphere of the village and delightful walks in the beautiful Dorset countryside that they now call home.A small library of books is displayed with in the pub that you’re welcome to browse. Another feature within the pub itself (and not in an outbuilding) is the most-attractive-looking skittle alley that I’ve yet seen in Dorset. A great venue for a social winter evening! The menu is extensive, uncomplicated and unpretentious. Meals are prepared using fruit & vegetables, meat and fish sourced from local suppliers. Starters include local Dorset pork and liver paté served with redcurrant jelly (£4.50), breaded garlic mushrooms (£4.50), sea bass and ginger fishcakes (£5.50), salmon and prawn stack (£5.50) or a soup of the day (£4.50). Main courses choices are steak, ale and mushroom pie (£8.95); lambs liver and bacon (£8.95); bangers and mash (£8.95); rump steak from Frampton’s butchers with chips (£9.95) or ham, chips & beans (£8.95); Fish lovers can choose between cod and chips (£7.95); grilled plaice with new potatoes and seasonal vegetables (£9.95) wholetail scampi (£7.95) and whitebait (£7.95). Vegetarians are catered for with a Cacciatore risotto (£7.95) or mushroom risotto (£8.95). The dessert menu changes daily. When my partner and I visited the choice was between chocolate gâteau, raspberry pavlova, apple crumble or Dorset apple cake, all served with your choice of ice-cream, cream or custard. The cheese board is another option.Opening hours are Monday 18.00 until closing time; Tues-Sat 12.00-15.00 and 18.00 until closing time; Sunday 12.00-15.00 and 19.00 until closing. Food is served from Tuesday to Sunday. Tel 010308 867930. (There is no mobile phone signal in the pub). King Charles II is believed to have passed through Drimpton after the Battle of Worcester in 1651. Why don’t you give it a try?
