The Royal Oak in Cotswold

A group of four of us enjoyed another lovely meal at The Oak. A great atmosphere and a roaring log fire. Two of us devoured the char grilled Cumberland sausages and bash which was very flavoursome and it was no trouble when we asked to have baked beans instead of peas…..yummy! One person had gammon which was cooked to perfection and another had hunters chicken which was also delicious. Service was great and a special mention to our waiter George who was very polite and friendly. We were table checked three times. All good.

A wonderful meal out with my family! We are staying nearby for a week’s holiday and found this pub to book for a dinner. Delicious food and wonderful service! Special mention to our waiter Alfie, who was just lovely- so attentive, polite, friendly and brilliant! Really lovely evening! And incredibly reasonable for the 6 of us. Thoroughly recommend!

We stayed in the Cotswolds with our family and were pleased to find a pub that started serving meals early as we have two young grandchildren. Also the web site was very encouraging The group was seven adults and two children. The welcome and service was friendly the pub was clean and well kept. Alas some of the fare left a lot to be desired, several of us ordered the mushrooms expecting whole or at least halved pan fried with garlic, instead we were served sliced, old mushrooms which had turned into a tasteless black sludge! Two had steaks which were enjoyed, the majority had various burgers which were OK, chips weren’t great. Sadly my wife chose the sausages which were tasteless, served with off colour peas floating in a thin watery “gravy” So sadly our visit was memorable for all the wrong reasons, if the new owners really want to “make a go” of the place they need to review some aspects of their offerings.

Website food pictures look amazing so my husband was really disappointed with sausages, cooked cut in half, burnt underneath with triple portion peas. Really odd. This was our 20 anniversary meal of meeting.

We booked an evening meal at The Royal Oak to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The staff made us feel very welcome and there were two red roses on our table 🌹🌹, a lovely gesture thank you! We both had the Crayfish starter which was plentiful and tasted delicious, washed down with a glass of two of quality New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. For mains we went for the rump steak which was cooked to perfection accompanied with chunky chips, side salad, plus homemade peppercorn sauce. A cosy and friendly atmosphere with a mesmerising wood burner made it a night to remember. We’ll be back! 😘😘

When what can I sat this has to be the best Christmas lunch iv ever had food amazing staff made you feel at home and nothing was to much our server had us laughing at the get go I do believe she was the owners wife best dinner best service would definitely recommend. We enjoyed a lovely meal with great atmosphere and a cosy log fire. Our waiter. Alfie was very attentive and friendly. It turned out that the pub has new management and Sunday was their first day doing food. Well if that’s the first day they have no worries. The roast dinner was amazing and clean plates all round. Staff are attentive and lovely. I was asked at the bar before we ate what the food was like. Well come a visit and enjoy this great pub you won’t regret it.

We chose the Royal Oak as it had some good looking vegetarian options. I had the mushroom soup as my starter and it was absolutely wonderful - an oily clear soup with mushrooms in it, and the best I've ever had. Sadly, the second course, beetroot wellington did not live upto the first. A lump of almost inedible pastry with about a spoonful of beetroot inside it. Speaking to the waitress afterwards, she told me that the mushroom soup was made in house, but that they buy in some other items, including the wellington. So, my advice if coming here, is to pick things they cook themselves. And order the mushroom soup!

Tables vacant on a quiet Wednesday lunchtime. Chap there wasn’t interested and said find a table and I’ll be right over. Sat there like a mug and nothing. Went to the bar and asked for menus. Shrugged off and told to wait. Then when given menus he told me all the stuff that was off. He couldn’t have cared less if he had tried. We decided better to leave.

I only wish I had taken a photo of our food as it was sublime. We came for a roast and we were not disappointed. I had the burrata to start and it was delicious. The portion was huge and I couldn’t finish it all. The kitchen team made our son some garlic bread for his starter as he couldn’t wait to tuck into something. I asked for bread and butter but they went over and above which delighted him. We had a beef and pork roast dinner. Wow! Probably the best roast I have ever had when dining out, and I am very fussy about my roast dinners. The pork belly was nothing short of incredible. It’s just a shame I was already quite full from my starter!

Re-opened and re-invented, the food was outstanding, a select and imaginative menu. As far as ‘Gastro Pubs’ one of the best I have eaten in. Staff are engaging and friendly, would highly recommend.

Found this Gem of pub , the dog was welcome and the food was amazing . Service from the staff was very attentive and welcoming. Will definitely be back.

We would have loved to give a review based on visiting the pub. However that was not to be. We tried to book for Sunday lunch first by email and then by phone. An acknowledgment email was received suggesting that as they were very busy we should telephone. The number given was not the one quoted on the website. When I called it went to answerphone suggesting that we book online via the website. There was no provision to do this on the website. The message I left on the phone voicemail was not answered. Is this pub still open??

We came here for a family celebration. The service was so hit and miss. They seemed very short staffed and the staff that were in didn't seem to be in any hurry.The food was all very beige and boring, nothing inspiring and I think the chef had forgotten to order any sort of seasoning. Won't be going back as this was not a night that will live long in the memory, well not the right reasons anyway.

After a long walk, the Royal Oak in South Cerney was a welcomed sight. What appeared to be a small pub opened up to reveal an amazing space with a double aspect Woodburning stove.Great food served by amazing staff who had a great sense of humour.We ended up staying the whole day and will definitely go back when we are next in the area.

We visited this lovely country pub yesterday. While out on a walk exploring the beautiful village of South Cerney we were met by the wonderful smell of food so decided to give the pub a try. Booked a table for 1.30pm and we were seated straight away and they took our drink and food order. Drink arrived straight away. Almost an hour later we had to ask where our food had got to? It then arrived quickly, I had linguini with prawns which was lovely, unfortunately my husband ordered the roast beef which was so tough he could barely cut it and when he tried to chew it it made him sick. I tried a piece it was awful. I noticed a lot of people had lef quite a lot of it on their plates. Totally spoilt my birthday lunch we have come home and my husband has had nothing to eat. Shame as it looked quite nice and the reviews were good.

We booked a table for 7 on a Saturday evening and had one of the most enjoyable nights ever. We were made so welcome by all the staff and the service was excellent. Choice of food was wide with good options for vegetarians. I chose the steak and it was melt in your mouth. The wine list had lots of options and of the whites, rose and reds we had all were good value for money. The ambience and decor were perfect and toilets immaculate. We all agreed if we lived locally we would be there every week. Couldn't fault it. Thanks Jack and Jenny for a marvellous night.

We stopped by at 1.45 as a table of 7 for some lunch (food stopped serving at 3) immediately we were told that we wouldn’t be able to eat as the kitchen already had orders in - not sure how many orders they had to not be able to serve food for over an hour. We then asked if we could put and order for a couple of bowls of chips for the table to be told that ‘it all came from the same kitchen’. After getting the message that he obviously didn’t want to serve us we swiftly left. After pubs being closed for so long you think they would be welcome a table of 7 looking to have a lovely pub lunch and afternoon of drinks with welcome arms … this pub have other ideas.

Cute pub close to the Cotswold lakes, food was decent (burger was not my favourite) but the breads starter were really lovely and a decent portion. The music playlist was so good though !

Recommended by a friend and we are glad they did. The food was lovely and even though we could not get a table in the restaurant we did get one in the bar area. We had the chicken kiev and enjoyed it so much we came back the next night and had the same meal.

We went here on a Saturday evening, about 1800 for a family dinner. Nice and cool inside despite the scorching heat out, and absolutely lovely food. Would recommend, much better than eating anywhere on the nearby water park resort.

We had some sandwiches from the lunch menu, which were tasty and filling. Service was slow but friendly. Felt covid safe. We had two babies in our party and staff were accommodating. Would happily return.

13 of us visited (across several tables due to Covid) a few weeks back and they were fantastic! When I spoke with staff before the day they were extremely accommodating and really made booking a breeze despite the restrictions changing.On the day, the service was second to none and we weren't waiting around long for anything. Most of us had Sunday roasts which were not only presented well but tasted incredible. If you're in the area, I highly recommend a visit to The Royal Oak!

Went to the the other pub in the village last night owner by same people, slightly different menu and the food was possibly slightly better than the other place but we did have something different to eat so a little harsh to possible compare, two great pubs and great food and dogs made very welcomed.

We felt very safe dining in this comfortable country pub as there was sufficient space for safe distancing both inside and out. The food is excellent, a wide choice of freshly cooked dishes in generous portions. The Catch of the Day was superb on both occasions when we ate there, as was the linguini and the burger is HUGE!

DO NOT GO HERE! Such a bad welcome from the people in charge! We went in and was greeted with rude customers and bar staff who wouldn't let us enter the pub. They refused to serve us although they were serving drinks to customer already there also. Absolutely ruined my birthday!

Arrived to being told it was shut by the regulars while drinks was still being served, they asked if we had ID (we both do), we said yes and they said doesn’t matter anyway we’re closed and started laughing along with the bar staff who were pouring drinks for them at the time. There was 40 mins+ before closing and the bar staff didn’t even get involved when we tried to talk directly to them. It was my girlfriends birthday and they ruined our night. Just an overpriced pub with some oversized attitudes, I wouldn’t recommend and i didn’t even manage to sit down.

Lovely time spent in The Oak catching up with family. Quality wine, good variety of dishes on the menu. Enjoyed the Catch of The Day Special. Staff friendly and helpful, didn't rush us and were tolerant of us having a late drink after the meal. Nice atmosphere. Prices reasonable. Definitely recommend.

I visited with my husband and friend for early evening dinner . We were given a great table that felt very covid safe . The menu is varied , difficult to make a decision !! However we all chose , I had the tuna for main which was absolutely delightful … I would say the best tuna steak in this country … I could have been sitting in a Mediterranean fish restaurant!! Hubby had fish and chips and our friend had the lamb.. To say we enjoyed ourselves is a huge understatement.. but we all agreed that it was probably one of the best experiences of dining ever … we all had 3 courses ….there wasn’t a single thing that we were even slightly unhappy with !! Great prices for great quality and the service was commendable too ( England were playing Germany .. so the staff were busy outside !!) unfortunately, as we are on holiday and going home tomorrow , we can only fit one more visit in !!! This evening we went to the Royal Oak for dinner as part of our first girls weekend away since the pandemic. As essential key workers in the NHS this was desperately needed. Our table was booked for 1930 but our meal didn’t arrive until 2030. The male server apologised for the delay and the food was delicious. We were very disappointed to see a complete disregard for PPE and distancing regulations by the staff team. We were sat less than 1m from another table. The bar staff wore their masks on their chins (not mouth nor nose) and were rude. I would liken one females attitude to Kevin (perry and Kevin, remember them?). When we requested masks to be worn the manager apologised but the staff team continued. The receipt was thrown down on the table.One young female team member was fabulous. What a complete disregard to sacrifice made by so many people and the safety of their customers.

We stopped for an evening meal whilst staying in the area as a party of 4 adults, a toddler and 2 dogs. We sat in a lovely undercover outdoor area, with a small play frame for the children. The service was very warm and welcoming and the food was delicious. We will definitely be back if we are in the area again. Highly recommend this pub. Thank you for a lovely evening!

The Sunday lunch was ok. Proper roast and nice cheesy chips. We all felt the service was poor. The manager didn’t seem to care for our complaints regarding staff not wearing a mask, sorry they did wear a mask but around their chins!!We ordered lime and soda but got just soda. When we pointed out the missing lime we were promised it but it didn’t appear until we chased them up.Another family unit went for a meal two days after our visit, they also complained about the service, so it’s not just us that thought the staff is poor.

We booked for dinner have seen many good reviews on TA. We weren’t disappointed. The welcome was friendly and the menu offered a variety of food well above what you’d normally expect in a pub. My starter of rare beef with mild mushrooms exceeded expectations as I was expecting carpaccio but this was proper steak. My main of tuna was superbly cooked. We’d definitely return when in the area again

We had 4 meals at lunch but they were served on cold plates so the food quickly went cold ,not what I expect from a high rated restaurant So I can only suggest suggest that if dining you specify hot plates

This is a lovely little pub and we would recommend to everyone! We were away for a weekend in the Cotswolds and had seen on trip advisor the Royal Oak had great reviews - it did not disappoint. Staff were friendly and helpful and food was great too. An added bonus that the pub was showing the football in the afternoon/ evening and we were able to reserve a table for later on to watch the game.

Recientemente visitamos el pub y restaurante Royal Oak el lunes 12 de octubre y tuvimos la suerte de conseguir una mesa que estaba llena. Cuando vi el menú me di cuenta de por qué, el menú era muy bueno, mejor que la tarifa normal de pub ya un precio razonable, pensamos. El personal fue muy agradable y servicial. Sin duda lo recomiendo para una agradable cena nocturna.

Seis de nosotros fuimos a comer al Royal Oak, aunque disfrutamos mucho de nuestra comida, el personal fue bueno, el pub era seguro para Covid, el servicio fue bueno y rápido y tenía un precio razonable, tuve el pollo Katsu y fue encantador, Volveríamos para otra comida allí y lo recomiendo encarecidamente.

Visité aquí con mi pareja y su familia un domingo para el asado. Wow wow wow, es todo lo que puedo decir. Entre la mesa de 6, todos comimos algo diferente, carne de res, pollo, cerdo y nueces asadas. Todos se veían y sabían increíbles. Servicio al cliente realmente agradable. Lo recomendaría 100%

Vine a almorzar el domingo con mis padres, pareja y hermana con pareja. Entre nosotros tuvimos uno de cada uno de los asados (incluido el asado de nueces) y nos quedamos impresionados. La carne estaba tierna, buen tamaño de las porciones y muchas verduras. La comida estaba caliente y el servicio era bueno, el personal amable y los baños estaban limpios. Recomendaría.

Es un pub de pueblo pequeño y encantador y nos sentamos junto al fuego, que era muy acogedor. El personal fue muy acogedor y no pudo hacer más por nosotros. Teníamos entrante y bistec y fue encantador! Nada que criticar en absoluto. Realmente lo recomiendo.
