Lovely pub excellent Sunday lunch although a tad expensive but I guess you get what you pay for Only fly in the ointment they add 10 % to the bill for service which in my opinion should be discretionary.

To think that I can be blown away by a seemingly simple dish like a burger makes me feel obligated to leave a review. I ordered a Madeira sauce fir my chips, as I'm not into ketchup or mayo and this just took it to another level. My partner had steak with peppercorn sauce and the quality was amazing. It's been years since we have had food on this level. We were surprised with the other places in the area which were all fully booked and the food was not up to the same standard. No wonder The Royal Oak has 4.8 stars. Perfect Guinness poured and such friendly staff!! Can't wait for the next visit! 😁

I live in London and am a big fan of a Sunday roast. The Royal Oak in North Woodchester, Stroud, beats all the competition hands down. Its lovely to see the chef carve at your table and the food is outstanding. Of particular note are the gravy and roast potatoes. Its 1.5 hr from London (Paddington) by train. We all had the roast from the trolley, which was a lovely experience in itself. The roast potatoes and parsnip chips were fab, but the beef has redefined roast meat for me - so tender, it was like cutting through butter. The service was excellent too. My wife and I dined here for my birthday on Friday evening and we had a great time. We had a Zoom meeting that evening which had us arriving at 8:30pm, 30 minutes before the kitchen was due to close. Regardless, the staff made us feel welcome and did not hurry us at all. They were friendly, helpful, and courteous at all times. The menu was presented on several chalkboards around the dining area, offering a good selection of meat, fish, and vegetarian dishes. The background music was an eclectic mix of popular tunes from the 1960s, all of them familiar to us. It was loud enough to enjoy, but soft enough to not interfere with our conversation. The food was exceptional. We started with fried whitebait with garlic mayo and tomato soup. The whitebait was crisp and delicious. The tomato soup was made with roasted tomatoes and fresh basil -- it was hearty and aromatic. I had baked cod on buttered leeks for my main course. The cod was lightly dusted with flour, giving it a crunchy crust. It was cooked to perfection -- tender and moist. The buttered leeks were a perfect accompaniment -- caramelized and full of flavour. My wife had beef tournedos in a red wine sauce which she enjoyed immensely. The beef was tender and full of flavour, and the sauce was rich and robust, complementing the meat perfectly. We shared platters of green vegetables and mashed potatoes -- all well-prepared and the perfect accompaniment to our meals. We left shortly after closing time but, again, the staff did not rush us at all. It was a most enjoyable evening and we will certainly return the next time we are in the area.

The Oak was recommended by a friend who goes there regularly and said it was the best Sunday lunch he’d ever had. And he was so right. The lovely touch is the Chef/owner carving his beautiful ‘proper ‘ juicy joints at your table from an Antique French domed trolly that his father brought back from Paris in 1940. A lovely touch of style. Generous portions with homemade horseradish apple sauce and a jug of gravy. Accompanied by loads of lovely fresh veg including delicious roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings. Followed if one has the room by a choice of yummy homemade deserts.put this together with the friendly welcoming attitude of the Guv’nor and his team and you have the recipe for a relaxing perfect lunch. We liked the experience so much we are booking a family lunch for 10:for my 80th birthday in a few weeks. I know my sons and their families will enjoy The Oak as we did. Thank you so much. The best !

We visited the Royal Oak to watch a 6 nations rugby game when visiting the area for wedding viewings and this pub was a superb find! As soon as we walked in it was clear it was the pub of a rugby enthusiast with lots of fantastic signed photos and shirts of players from various teams and eras. The pub itself was very traditional and cosy, but extremely clean and well presented. The landlady was so friendly and accommodating and so to was the chef who we presume was the landlord. Both were also very welcoming to our dog with the owners and pub very dog friendly. We did not have a main meal but the food looked fantastic with lots of options and as vegetarians, it was good to see so many different options here too. We did try a portion of the foul chips from the 6 nations menu and they were incredible! A few pints by the fire watching the game was an afternoon well spent. Don’t go out for lunch on Sundays as its always a disappointment. Always wish we had stayed home and cooked our own. But we had our Son and grandson and were in the area, so booked it last minute on the Saturday. Although we arrived 30 minutes early, they seated us straight away, the atmosphere was of a proper old fashioned family pub and the hosts really friendly. We ordered 3 roasts and nuggets and chips for our 4 y/o grandson. The roast was wheeled to the table and carved there. A choice of Sirloin or Pork and crackling or some of both. We all ordered both. The Sirloin was delicious and cooked to a perfect medium rare and the Pork was moist and tasty with light fluffy crackling. It was served with homemade apple sauce and horseradish, Yorkshire pudding proper roast potatoes and parsnips, cauliflower cheese, carrots, french beans Broccoli and a large jug of real gravy. Delicious, all of it. And all 4 meals and a round of drinks for £67.00. It may be a 40 mile round trip but we will be returning.

What an absolute delight. I’m an English lass who now lives in America. I had asked my dear friend, who I am visiting in Minchinhampton, to sort us out a proper Sunday roast in a quintessential English pub. Not only is the food here amazing, the roast is as traditional as it gets, with roasted potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, greens and a mouth watering gravy. The clearly very experienced Chef carves the meat (beef and pork options) in front of you, whilst regaling you with the pubs impressive history dating back to the Roman Empire. His partner is also an extremely personable woman, and together they both serve up something quite special and so much more than just wonderful food. I highly recommend this pub to anyone who enjoys excellent food, English history and a more personal service. The prices are also very reasonable and the portions generous. The dessert list is an almost impossible choice to make, but that’s never a bad thing is it. Please go, you won’t regret it, but do book ahead, it’s a small venue and they only serve food Thursday through Sunday.

I rarely write reviews but feel compelled to do so after visiting the Royal Oak last night, and having one of the best meals out we have ever had. This pub has now become our favourite place to eat. We typically come for a Sunday roast with family, and it is amazing. The meat is tasty, tender and served up generously. Coupled with crispy home made roasties and a good selection of veg. Yorkshire puddings and homemade condiments are on offer. Tasty and cooked to perfection and topped off with the best gravy we've ever tasted. According to the owner Trish, this starts it's life earlier in the week as root vegetables and is finessed over a period of time. Last night, we decided to try the Royal Oak for a meal other than a roast. The menu was all homemade and with a selection that honestly left us struggling to choose (as it all sounded so good). We decided we would have to return the following Saturday in order to try different dishes. We settled on the beef medallions in a red wine sauce with roasted grand mare potatoes and vegetables. It arrived as a generous portion and well presented. The meal was absolutely delicious, the sauce was gorgeous and the medallions were cooked better than most steaks. This was the best meal we have ever eaten out, and we felt compelled to tell the owner Trish. Trish is an exceptional host and runs her beautiful pub with pride and high standards. It appears very important to her that every person visiting has the best experience. Talking to Trish after our meal we learned of her and her partners extensive experience and success in the hospitality industry, including their mobile catering company called the travelling chefs. Our experience was concluded with a homemade brownie and homemade ice-cream. This was beautifully presented and tasted wonderful. There was a good selection of deserts and we are looking forward to trying others over our future visits. To top everything off, this pub is just beautiful. A small country hideaway that dates back to the 1700s and was a former coach house. We will be back (frequently). Thanks for looking after us. Kate and Matt Hammond x

Well worth a very short walk from the Cotswold way for Tea and exceptional cakes. The staff are lovely and the cakes just have to be seen. Only problem is ….- climbing the Tyndall monument immediately afterwards!
