We visited the Royal oak with my family whilst visiting the area on a short holiday stay. After seeing some of the reviews I wasn't sure what to expect. It turns out we had nothing to worry about at all. We were greeted by friendly bar staff and seated quickly. We only waited as little as a minute before a lovely waitress came to take our drinks order then our food order shortly after. The food came quickly and served by a very friendly waiter. (Unfortunately I didn't get his name) . The food was lovely with great portions. We were often asked if everything was OK and if we needed anything. We enjoyed it so much that we booked for lunch the next day. Again we experienced a lovely lunch with great service. Great portion sizes, tasty food and decent prices.

Some food options not available as they weren’t ready, or do we were told. Waitress in black with dark hair has a can’t be bothered attitude. Clueless about what was in the soup, didn’t go and ask the kitchen. No options to change menu items or remove ingredients, just told no. Long pauses when answering questions, no smile, took our payment as we left and did not say goodbye or anything. There was a young male waiter who did try and be hospitable. The owners need to watch this waitress closely before she costs you anymore customers.

We called at this place having read trip advisor reviews. Great varied menu nice open sandwich lunch menu too. Friendly staff. My dad said the beef burger he had tasted in a long time. Staff keen to receive feedback. My smoked salmon and prawn sandwich good fresher bread would have made it even better. The staff happy to hear the feedback. I would recommend this place very close to Sherwood Forest.

We have only started going back here after many years. And it may be many years before we go back. Last week we were here, my husband had the best fish and chips he’d ever had. There were limited vegan items for me. This week, we decided to take our friend along. There was a largish lady who had her back to us as we walked in. We waited, and waited. Always acknowledge customers, even if you are busy! The one vegan main wasn’t ready yet as it was “still in the oven.” This was at 12.30pm. I had an olive and hummus platter. Couldn’t eat the hummus as it was extremely chilli hot. When I asked for plain hummus, I was told there was none. It didn’t say on the menu it was blow your mouth off hot. No offer of any thing else. The fish and chips was nice, but just a lot of grease on the plate. Our friend ordered potato and leek soup, it was bright green. The only thing to make soup that colour are peas, but when we asked the lady what was in it, she said “potatoes and leeks.” Clueless. The dessert was nice though. As we left there was no “did you enjoy your meal” “ thank you” or “come again.” Nothing. A bit of customer service training is needed. Smile. Be helpful. There was one other table of people the whole time we were there. We aren’t fussed about going back.

First time in Edwinstowe so came here based on the reviews and mention of dog friendliness. Both were spot on. Food is slightly above standard pub food prices but you're more than getting what you're paying for in quantity and quality. All the family came away very happy and wanting to go back again in future. Only downside is that we've been coming to the Sherwood Center Parcs for years and missed so many opportunities to come here instead of the chain restaurants in there! Won't make that mistake again!

We visited as a family of 4 adults, 1 child and a dog as we were staying in the area but didn’t really know where else to try. I’ve got to say, we were pleasantly surprised. It describes itself as a ‘gastropub’ and it’s not wrong- the menu was excellent and the food really high quality. All the meals and desserts were delicious. The only criticism is that the venue itself isn’t great. It feels very tired and more like a Weatherspoons - the decor doesn’t match the quality of the food for sure! For example, we sat by a window which had black mould around it and the toilets, although clean, were very dated. To summarise, don’t be out off by the decor because the food is worth it!

Sunday lunch 23/6/24 Service 1/10. We rang before visiting to ask about vegan food and they said they catered for vegan. On ordering our food we asked for a vegan option and it was soup for starter and crumble for dessert but no main. The waitress never offered to ask the kitchen if a vegan main was available. If we had known this we would not have booked as we have a vegan in our group. If we didn't have our elderly parents with us we would have upped sticks. So our vegan had soup whilst the rest of us had a Sunday dinner. Butter served with the bread for the vegan soup!!! And had to ask for a spoon. Our table was never visited again to ask if we wanted anymore drinks or to check if all was ok. We went to the bar to get more drinks A long time later we were asked if we wanted a dessert which we all did. The dessert menu followed but the waitress didn't return for sometime. When she came back we declined desserts and got the bill. We were never asked if all was ok. In fact apart from asking us what drinks and main meal we wanted the waitress barely spoke and didn't smile once. She must have long miserable shifts. My family work in public facing jobs and we all agreed the service was poor. Food 10/10. The food here is a big plus and was delicious. The service and vegan choice is a big let down here. A smile from the staff would be nice. Venue 10/10 decorated lovely and great location with parking We left here and went down the road (2 mins walk) to fables for coffee and cake (even had oat milk and vegan cake for our vegan) and sat outside in the sunshine. Greeted with a smile from the lovely staff there. No return to the Royal Oak for us I'm afraid.

Surprisingly excellent. The location on face value does not drive you here vs some other local options...... think again! The friendliness staff we met and consistent service. Spotlessly clean. Good bar, nice welcome (over days), piping hot food, quick service, staff reconised empty glasses and good atmosphere (music, family, friends, dogs etc) . A very well run pub and restaurant. Sensible prices and not pretending to be gastro. Would definitely return for a drink and / or food.

My wife and I picked this pub at random on our journey down to Norfolk from Manchester. We are so glad that we found this gem as the meals we had were amongst the best we have experienced (well done Google Maps for randomly finding this place). My wife had the Steak and ale pie and it was a proper pie (not one of those in a pot with a crust lid!). It was filled with so much beef and gravy and tasted amazing. The vegetables and potatoes were also perfectly cooked. Not too soft but not too hard, just right. I had the pork belly and again it was cooked to perfection. Tender juicy pork with a crisp crackling that I could actually bite into. The mustardy sauce and vegetables again were delicious and cooked perfectly. Social distancing was observed by the staff and they were all very nice in every way. I strongly recommend you visit this pub if you are passing or are lucky enough to live nearby

We came for lunch here after visiting Sherwood Forest. We parked at the Sherwood Forest Visitor centre which is £4 for all day then we walked down to the Royal Oak which takes about five minutes. We actually booked in advance due to the current situation. I had olives then the Mumbai Burger which was delicious, my husband had the crab cake then the pork belly dish which he was really impressed with. We enjoyed it so much that when we were out later in the week at Bolsover Castle we called in there on the way back to have lunch again, this time I had the club sandwich with fries and my husband had the classic burger, again both dishes were delicious. We found both visits were excellent value for money, the food is obviously good quality and fresh and you certainly get plenty, we left very full both times. The staff were also very friendly and efficient and coping with the current Covid guidelines very well. Would absolutely recommend eating here if you are in the area, if we lived closer we would eat here regularly.

We had a great lunch here on Saturday. It is well organised with the COVID restrictions and we felt very safe. We had booked a table for 4 with a dog and were pleased to be able to sit inside - they have an area where dogs are allowed which is great.Staff were friendly and well organised. They were taking food orders themselves but they have an app to do it’s well so we used that which worked very well (you pay at the same time with your card). The food was excellent and we all enjoyed our selections - 2 of us had the Greek lamb dish which was really tasty and quite different from the usual pub food. Others had the lasagne and the fish finger sandwich which were equally good. The whole experience was very good and would happily return.

The Royal Oak is by far the most organised public space I have been to since the lockdown ended. They manage to abide by all the necessary regulations without allowing this to interfere with the enjoyment and experience of 'going out' - and, in addition, the staff are absolutely lovely! They were polite and helpful, patient and very professional and diligent. To top this off, their food is out of this world! I stayed for several nights at a lodge nearby, and found myself going back virtually every day to eat and relax at the Royal Oak. The tapas they do is truly gourmet: I have honestly never had such good pub food! And their burgers... Wow! Absolutely chuffed at how amazing the menu was and the quality of the food. Their chef deserves a big shout-out! Or chefs - whoever is in the kitchen could literally do the food for my wedding! A huge thank you to all that work there as the staff were just exceptional. This place is one of the most under-rated places I have been to - it deserves to thrive: they really do put in the hard graft when it comes to customer satisfaction. 5*!

Ate here a couple of days ago. First time eating out since lockdown so we were a bit nervous about how it would all work. Needn't have worried: well organised, clean, table service (which is a requirement under new legislation-not sure why previous reviewer had a problem with this). All really professional, felt safe and the food and service, as usual, was brilliant. I had the Greek-style lamb dish with flatbread and it was stunning. We also recommend the new cocktail menu! Well done all at the Oak, for a measured, safe and professional response to a difficult time. Don’t let the rather somber exterior put you off, get inside and enjoy the pleasant service and surprisingly good pub food.Good choice of beers, varied menu with nice touches like “tapas like” starters where you can mix 3-5 starters, half a dessert & coffee (and believe me half a dessert is quite sufficient if you have eaten a main course). Main course choices seem limited but there are specials too and sometimes ‘less is more’ as far as quality is concerned. We liked the quality of the ingredients and the freshness of the cooking; no stale greasy chips or dull salads.Great with our grandchildren and our aged dog. Where to start we both decided on pizzas and for my daughter a lasagne. We decided on having the bar snacks as a starter and chose onion rings, halloumi fries, chicken wings, belly pork and fish bites. That alone was very filling and we thought great value for money. Our mains came and we both rated the pizza dough to near perfection and the toppings spot on. My daughter ate all her lasagne and even said it was better than her dad's. Overall we thought the food was great and value for money. To top it off we had a great waitress called Wendy, she was fantastic and looked after us all night. She kept us well informed throughout on the wait times etc and looked after and chatted with my daughter all night.

We haven’t been to the Royal Oak before, it was our anniversary so we fancied some where different. I spotted on facebook they had a pizza deal on Wednesdays, which is any large pizza for £8.50. As you walk in the first thing you see is their massive homemade sausage rolls and they look delicious! Drinks were spot on and not too expensive. The pub itself is really lovely, it’s got a chilled out atmosphere, you could definitely sit in there all afternoon! The guy and the lady behind the bar / serving were so polite, they went out of their way to speak with you, they were really nice. I spotted its dog friendly and it’s brill to see the doggies coming in after their walk. Wow so the pizza was really big and very tasty, definitely 10 out of 10. It was fresh and there were plenty of types of pizza to choose from. I had the hot pizza which was top notch and my partner had the Royal Oak burger pizza and we couldn’t fault either one. We will definitely be returning for pizza again and to sample the other menus too. Really lovely place, good prices and very welcoming. Thanks for having us!!

There was a very large group of us attending, food came out promptly and it was super! Sam ( think that was her name) was extremely professional and dealt with everything beautifully! I had the baked meatballs- the best meal I have had out locally in quite a while!

Visited here today for Sunday lunch, although the meal was delicious the portion size was minuscule (Roast beef dinner) I’m not sure weather they were running out of food or it’s now the way it is, but a couple in the party couldn’t believe the difference from the last visit, it was their recommendation we ate there. For the price it was disgraceful me and my partner came straight home and had a sandwich we were starving.

Found the barstaff very friendly and helpful. Food took a while but not too much of a problem. Beer very good (nice selection of proper ales). Problem was the food was all extremely fatty. We had 2 different burgers, haddock and chips, and porkbelly. Every dish was laden with fat. Sad. It would be be far better to cook these dishes in a healthier way.

We ate at The Royal Oak on Sunday (advisable to book as it’s very busy!) We had all three courses from the Sunday lunch menu and were not disappointed! The food was amazing. We ordered tomato and basil soup and the crab cakes for starters. I wish the crab cakes were served as a main as I could’ve eaten them 3 times over. For mains I must recommend the roast beef.....it was melt in the mouth! Perfect. We also had the pork and roast chicken, which were equally as delicious. Most of the vegetables served were homegrown and you could really taste the difference. The service was fantastic and the overall experience was worth every penny. We will definitely be returning here! 5*****

I live in the locality, The Royal Oak was always somewhere to go for a reasonable meal. Last week i took my daughter and mum for a late lunch. It was okay and i thought nothing else much about it. Today, i recieve a £100 parking fine in the post!!!! For parking in the Royal Oak's carpark. Needless to say i am extremely annoyed and not feeling particually gracious towards them. We dealt with 3 separate staff on the day, all of whom were polite and helpful, but not one asked or point out about the parking regulations. Nor was there any notice about it on the table we had sat on. Needless to say i am challenging the fine but please, plesae be warned about the parking regulations before you eat at this venue.

We arrived and were taken to a table. We were then left there. We had to call a waitress to take our order. When the order was placed it arrived almost straight away. Can't fault the speed. The vegatables were all under done for me. They had put freash herbs on the roast potatoes. I'd have been more impressed if the roast potatoes were actually cooked and roasted. The roast potatoes could have done with another half hour in the oven and the veg could have done with another ten minutes boiling. There's al dente and there's raw, these were raw. I agree with the previous writer, Saul. No one mentioned the car park and the need to sign in. It was only because I saw someone else sign in. I would not go back for the sunday lunch, I'll give that one a swerve, but I might try another meal. The menu looked good so I will give it another try.

We came here after a days cycling at Sherwood. Lovely friendly staff, good atmosphere, stylish interior, very clean & the roast dinner was probably one of the best I’ve eaten. Reasonably priced too. Could not fault it.

Popped in for Sunday Lunch last weekend and I think it was probably one of the best Sunday Roasts I’ve had in a long time. The Beef was cooked to perfection and although I don’t normally go for a dessert I do love a Cherry Bakewell Tart and I’m so happy I did as it was great. No complaints from the Husband either on his meals. Think we may have found our new Sunday Lunch venue. The service and environment were also fantastic.

We went for a family meal. The menu descriptions sounded lovely however the standard of food didn’t match the description. Our starters were disappointingly small and not nearly as tasty as we thought they would be. Likewise for the mains. Portions were small, some things were scoldingly hot almost as if they had been super heated in a microwave or left standing in a hot oven. Mashed potatoes and meat was overly dry. Overall a big disappointment especially when you compare the price of other pubs in the area. It’s on the more expensive side (because of the location right next to Sherwood Forest). However the quality of the food is not comparable with the price and the standard is that of a cheaper place. I personally would only come here for drinks. The drinks were fine.

We went for a family lunch, it’s a lovely pub in a beautiful village. We ordered a child’s meal, a small fish and chips for my elder child and a chicken breast , served with mashed potato and seasonal veg off the light bite menus for £8.50. The children’s meals came and were ok size for children but when they brought mine it was smaller than the children’s meal and that’s not an exaggeration. I actually laughed when the waitress brought it over and said you were not lying when you said light meal, she also laughed. Honestly it was a battered out chicken breast so thin, 1 dollop of mash the size of a table spoon and 1 dollop of green veg , that was it served on a tea plate. If a child had received this then ok but £8.50 for that size lunch is a joke. Very overpriced and also I would call it a snack not lunch, I’ve been and bought myself something else to cook from the supermarket. Really disappointed .

We stopped in this beautiful little village whilst we were waiting to get into our holiday accommodation on the first day of our holiday and decided to go for a drink in The Royal Oak. We can honestly say it’s one of the most friendliest, welcoming pubs we have been in. Our children aged 7 and 4 were made to feel very welcome, drinks were of a high standard and very reasonably priced. We liked it so much we made sure we visited again whilst on holiday. Huge credit to the lovely staff.

Excellent food cooked very well with fantastic flavours. Had the Roast Beef which was first class. Thai Green Curry also very good. Received a parking ticket after returning home which was odd be called the pub and they seem to be taking care of it without any fuss so no harm done.

After hearing about the monkfish scampi we booked into this place so one of us could try this meal. Sat there knowing what we were going to order I discovered the restaurant did not have any monkfish scampi left after a busy day. Then one of our friends had to order something else after discovering that the gammon had run out. In saying that what we did order was lovely. I had the halloumi burger, very nice indeed. Plant to revisit for the monkfish scampi.

I was looking forward to dining here as a coeliac but the service I had wasn’t exactly accompanied with a smile. The gluten free pancakes that I ordered were delicious but unfortunately they clearly were not gluten free due to the terrible reaction I had later on that day.. very disappointing. Even though I confirmed with the waitress that the pancakes were gluten free!

We were staying for 1 night after a family get together. Checking in was very easy, with a key left outside your room, so you could check in at your leisure. Rooms were gorgeously furnished, with everything you could possibly need and very clean. Really pretty flower borders just outside our bedrooms. All of us slept well in the very comfortable beds. Breakfast was amazing and we felt well catered for as vegetarians. We’re looking for an excuse to come back and stay here, we had such a good stay!

Tucked away within an antiques emporium this little jewel. From entering the shop you’ll be greeted by a lovely gentleman. The food was exquisite made to order not mass produced. The taste out of this world. Skill, time and quality ingredients. We were blown away. Will definitely visit again! Worth seeking out!
