A pleasant experience for supper in this lovely establishment a short drive out of Winchcombe, to Gretton. The pub was extremely busy when we arrived (Friday evening) and had to squeeze our way through to secure a drink. Having done so, the staff were then attentive to us as we were served dinner. I would have thought that it would be busy (which is why we booked) but we, along with a young family of 3) were the only people in this large dining space. It therefore lacked atmosphere. The mains on the menu did not tempt either of us and so we settled for a few starters to share. It was 'ok' - nothing special.. but you could not fault the service staff who remained enthusiastic throughout.

Unfortunately, not a good experience this time!We booked a table well in advance and allowed over 2 hours for a leisurely meal before a booking for Christmas light show for a Christmas treat for friends! We arrived 10 minutes early and were taken to our table and ordered quickly - four roast dinners, no odd meals at all.An hour later we were still waiting, despite several large parties coming in and being served. When we questioned this with a waitress, she said the kitchen can only do what it can.10 minutes later another waitress said our order had been lost and asked what we wanted. We had to hurriedly eat the roast dinners, which were not very hot,no time for dessert and rush off to the light trail. The blonde waitress was very polite , apologetic . .

My husband booked this restaurant for the 2nd year running for a Christmas meal for 15 people. I can only say positive things about the food and the staff. The restaurant was exquisitely decorated for Christmas and everyone remarked on it. We had made our choice from a menu the week before. I chose the deep fried Brie as my starter, then, roast turkey and chocolate and hazelnut tart for dessert. The vegetables came separately in large serving dishes. There was loads to choose from. Also sauces and my favourite bread sauce…..which I might add I’ve never had in any other restaurant. I can also mention the red cabbage was to die for. It was so well spiced with Christmas flavours it was gorgeous. They even gave me some to take home. Throughout the meal the staff were always checking iff we needed anything else or needed more drinks. It was an absolute pleasure to dine here and having spoken to the rest of the crowd they would like to return again next year.

Sunday lunch not as good as normal. Perhaps different chef but the food was not as good as normal. Parsnips not cooked on any of the plates, roast potatoes were rather dry!, Asked for custard to go with crumble no custard today!!, the lemon tart was over cooked burnt pastry, far to much gelatin in the lemon mixture and dry and stoggy so returned the Apple Tartan in exchanged was just about passable. Booking online was easy. On arrival we were offered the choice of three rooms to eat. We chose the restaurant, and shown to our table. Very calming and romantic setting with candles and subdued lighting. Only customers present in the restaurant the whole evening, but table service not rushed. The lighting was fine until the sun went down when it became quite dim. Our waiter soon recognised this, and provided more candles. Drink choice offered once seated, and soon provided. We made our starter choice. It was my birthday meal, so price not considered. I chose soft shell crab in tempura batter, served with salad. Unfortunately not much crab, but could still be tasted. My wife had about ten mussels in shells which would have been more satisfying for me. My wife's steak was cooked as requested, with good flavour. I had the lamb tagine which was plentiful and flavoursome. For dessert, treacle tart with maple syrup and double cream. Very nice indeed. My wife's panacotta was very much to her liking. Coffee also very good. In good humour, the waiter wanted us to see the pattern she had made in the froth as not obvious in the subdued ight. Allround, a very pleasant meal in a quiet and comfortable environment.

I was surprised to discover that they don’t serve any non-dairy milks for coffees/teas. I am allergic to cow dairy and I find it quite discriminatory for the establishment to not offer an alternative, especially as there are so many easily available in this day and age! The food menu is fairly inclusive for dietary requirements, so it’s confusing as to why their drinks menu is not very inclusive. I think in 2024 this is very unsatisfactory and I would urge management to reconsider their offerings.

We booked into your pub as we were always so delighted with the restaurant Wesley House. It was quite a shock to witness the difference in cleanliness and epecially the food. The chef in Wesley House was excellent and not once, in all the years we went to Wesley, were we disappointed. We were first of all put at a draughty table so we asked to be moved so were given another table. Once I had wiped all the crumbs off the seat we sat down to a very mediocre meal. The staff were pleasant enough but all the cupboards, where staff opened the drawers, were very grubby. Needless to say, we shan't be going back to The Royal Oak.

we had Sunday Lunch and really enjoyed it, there was plenty to eat, the greens served with the meals were a mix which makes a pleasant change rather than a dish of cabbage or broccolli, which i cannot stand. the food was served hot and reasonably quickly despite it being busy. desserts were excellent and a good choice. A tip before you order, check the specials board in the Bar. good service pleasant staff. Atmosphere, for me I wasn't happy , there was a couple of parties in and the noise coupled with the high ceiling made it very difficult to hear, I struggled as I wear hearing aids to be fair, but others in our group said the same. All the same I would recommend the restaurant and we will go again.

The Roast Potato That Changed My Life ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (Would sell my soul for another) I have seen the light, and it is golden brown, crispy, and glistening with just the right amount of oil. This roast potato wasn’t just food; it was a religious experience. One bite, and I swear I heard a choir of angels singing in the distance. The exterior? A perfect crunch that could shatter the foundations of weak-willed diets. The inside? Fluffier than a cloud that’s just been through a premium car wash. The seasoning? So well-balanced it deserves its own TED Talk. I don’t know who made this masterpiece, but I’d like to shake their hand (or marry them). I briefly considered carrying a tiny velvet ring box and proposing on the spot. If I could legally adopt this potato, I would. In conclusion, if all potatoes were like this, I’d never eat anything else. 12/10. Life-changing. I am a new person now.
