Lunchtime on a Thursday. We arrived to find the car park empty. Not a good sign. OK. It was a dull and grey day but the place looked really tired. The door was opened by the chef/owner plus two dogs. The place was empty apart from someone trying to put up Christmas decorations. Not a great start, particularly when the chef turned out to be our waiter as well. But things took a distinct upward turn with the food. Filo parcel + sweet potato fries and a risotto were excellent although a rather soggy bread and butter pudding spoilt things a bit. During the time we were there only two more diners turned up. Overall very disappointing.

Visited here last year one lunch time and found it to be rather nice. Went here last night and it was rather tragic. We arrived at 6pm and there was one other table of 5 people there. We were given A4 paper menus, two of them, neither of which had starters (didn't represent the website menus either). What appeared to be the chef was very difficult to understand but was mainly saying that they had no burgers. We ordered four lots of nibbles and had this as a starter, when this finally arrived my heart sank... the chicken gujons arrived pretty charcoaled and the bruschetta (if thats what you call it) was tomato and cheese on a toasted bread burger roll. If we hadn't ordered the main we would have walked and left it there.. Half an hour later the main arrived two of us went for steaks one was good the other was very rare and had more fat than meat...the garlic and parmesan chips were identical to the normal chips! I had fish and chips, the mushy peas had been sat under a heat lamp as it was served a little dried up the fish was small and the batter was underdone. The chicken burger was served in the same bun as the bruschetta! and also had a horrible jam in it beware! The environment was strange and tired, they had 'Radio Paradise' blaring, I've never eaten in a restaurant listening to the Kinks before.... We all couldn't wait to get away, the place was weird and the food not good. My advice to others is if you want to go there and eat, order a starter (if they are doing them) wait for that then order a main if you like it - don't commit to both before you've tried! We won't be going back.

Spent a lovely couple of hours over a really good lunch with friends in this much improved and refurbished pub. The food choices were varied and interesting and although it is a pub at heart the food was much better than the average pub offerings. Steak, venison and ale pie with hand cut chips was superb and the hand cut home roasted ham, egg and chips beautifully cooked. Very tasty! Nice surroundings complemented by helpful and very friendly staff and two gorgeous friendly dogs who managed to stay well within the bar area and not encroach into the restaurant at all.

We were greeted by two gorgeous dogs who once they had said their hellos went back to sleep and we didn't see them again. We were disappointed they weren't serving Sunday lunch but I believe this is to be added to the menu soon. We all ordered different mains and were all really happy with our choices and the portion sizes were very generous. The puddings were also lovely. We found the staff very friendly and helpful. There didn't appear to be a baby change facility but that would be my only (very minor) criticism and we will be back

We went for lunch but were told they don't do lunch on Mondays and Tuesdays ( doesn't say this on their website) but that we could choose something from the sandwich menu. We opted for a roasted veg and pesto and a ham, tomato chutney and goats cheese sandwich - option was sandwich or ciabatta but only sandwiches were available.Around 25 minutes later the food arrived- we were the only customers and it was revolting! The ham was suspiciously warm and rather grey around the edges, the bit of salad was well past its best with slimy green bits in and everything was made with bits of dry toast! It was inedible and we did complain when asked if the food was alright. Was not expecting to have to pay for the food as we couldn't eat it, but were still charged 50%.The whole place seemed to be run by a young lad who was having to do everything, but I'm not sure he had the skills to be preparing food! He tried to be helpful but didn't know what to do when we said the food was not good. At least he made a good latte!

We visited quite early on a Friday evening to find we were only one of two other couples. My partner had a small fish with chips and I had Mexican Chicken and salad. We had wanted bar type food as we had been to their sister restaurant The Wharf House which is more Fine Dining and decided to go there instead. The young staff at the Malswick were lovely - perfect waiting staff - and they were sympathetic about the lack of gluten free options. I liked the fact that they had local art work on the walls and a grapevine over the arbour outside. So my caveats are that I had to ask for salad dressing and my partners small fish was like a school portion of fish- enough for a child but not a grown man. The food was fresh and tasty but not very adventurous. I say this as you can get much more interesting food at say The Purslane in Cheltentenham for just an additional 30% to the prices here. Also, the Wharf House had an old menu with old (more economic prices) for Malswick House so we were a bit disappointed to be be paying 20% more. At the same time, I was concerned for their business re their lack of custom. So I left fretting about how they were going to keep going.

We stopped here whilst passing around lunch time on our way to Cardiff. We were warmly welcomed by a very friendly woman who served us immediately at the bar. We had the pick of tables as there were very few others there, once seated the waitress informed us of all the specials and did not just point to the board they were on. After having an issue with one of our meals, both the waitress and young chef couldn't be more accommodating to resolve the issues we had. They were extremely apologetic and replaced the meal with the chef bringing it out to us personally. The food we ended up with was great (arguably the best garlic bread I have ever had). We would definitely go back again and try some more of the menu.Everyone has a bad day now and again, we are just extremely grateful the staff were as willing to help as they were, as we have been to some restaurants where this is has not been the case.

The menu, whilst not extensive, offers a good choice and has several vegetarian options. The food was of a good standard with reasonable portions. We noticed that, at certain times, there are offers that include a complimentary dessert. Overall this is a very good midweek lunch venue - the voucher being a bonus. The only possible criticism would be that the dining room furniture, whilst clean, looked a bit tired & used. We'll certainly consider another visit.

After reading some of the reviews on this site, one could only say I am left feeling slightly bemused. A lot of people have shown hate for this establishment, but I can not relate in any shape or form. I visited 'The Malswick' (as I heard some locals calling it) earlier today and was completely dumbfounded by the excellent table service, friendly atmosphere, and great food! Despite being incredibly busy, my food was served in a very respectable time. My only complaint in the food department were the potatoes; were they trying to be chips or roasties?!? Despite this, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal, and please give my complements to the person who served me :)P.S selling Fanta + Oasis mix on your drinks menu may increase the amount of customers. I have heard it is quite cool with the young ones.

The Sunday lunch was very disappointing and ruined by the roast potatoes which were inedible and tasted as if they had been warmed up in a microwave. They were either black or some looked as if covered in a white substance and were very hard and difficult to cut or bite into. The portions of other veg. were very small and only luke warm. The poor waiter just smiled all through our complaint and looked rather embarrassed. Two of us ordered ice-cream for dessert and were offered various flavours which we chose, only to be served with vanilla only. Again the waiter smiled through our complaint! One of our party was also served a drink in a glass with lipstick on the rim. Not good enough and we won't be returning.

I ordered ham, egg and chips. Service was quick but my egg was uncooked. I asked the waiter to take the egg back and for this to be sorted. When the egg came back they had just cracked the yolk to try and avoid the uncooked egg being seen. My mum had the cauliflower cheese roast and grandparents had roast lamb. The food was dry luke warm and had the vegetarian option no gravy. I wouldn't recommend coming for sunday lunch.

I recently visited here as a group of 6 adults with 1 child. After first ordering our food we were told that there was only one pie left, which was strange as lunch was from 12 o'clock and we were there at 1pm. The place was empty, with only one other table of 5 seated in the restaurant. So on our second attempt we all ordered the Sunday lunch. I first want to mention how great our waiter was, he was very polite and accommodating-it's a shame that that's the only nice thing I can say about this establishment! When our food arrived I couldn't believe they could charge £12.95. The child’s portion for £8.95 was the same size as the adults minus one slice of meat. The pork on everyone’s plate was not edible, it was so tough, and I couldn't cut it up never mind chew it! We got 3 small pieces of potato and a tiny selection of veg. After commenting (politely) to our waiter about the pork, to our surprise, the chef came storming out to us waving his hands, huffing and puffing saying we were all wrong. I can honestly say I have never experienced anything like it, not what you expect from a trained chef - he was incredibly rude to us all, pointing at us and shaking his head - we were gob smacked! We will not be visiting here again nor would we recommend Malswick House to anyone.

We were on our way to a garden centre and decided that as this establishment had re-opened we'd give it a try. At 12.30 pm on a Saturday afternoon there were very few people in here, so plenty of tables to choose from. We finally chose a table...or rather my 7 year old grandson did. The pleasant girl who was also serving behind the bar came to attend to us. She presented us with a menu which looked like it contained everything that they offered, even 2 courses for £10.95. After perusing the choices, which were varied and offered a good selection for all...even the young. We eventually plumped for fish and chips and home cooked ham, egg and chips. Can't go wrong with that. We were offered drinks at the table, and these were brought to us fairly swiftly. After a short wait, our lunch was also delivered. It looked extremely delicious and to my amazement the chips were actually made from " real" pototoes, not the frozen type one often encounters. My ham was off the bone and was really tasty, everything was well presented, down to the dressed side salad. My daughter had the fish and chips which again was beautifully presented and the little dishes of homemade mushy peas and tartare sauce complimented the meal. Both meals were delicious. As we had chosen the 2 courses we asked to see the dessert menu. There were approximately 5 to choose from, but all sounded yummy. I chose a pannacotta with a raspberry coulis, whilst my daughter chose the crumble made with seasonable fruit. After a short wait the desserts appeared, all made on the premises, the crumble was of a very generous size and contained apples and sultanas with a hint of cinnamon, this was accompanied by a separate dish of vanilla icecream and two spoons ( just for my grandson, who had shared our meals)my dessert looked very appealing but just one tiny complaint....no raspberry coulis...just a drizzling of "squirty" raspberry flavoured sauce...which was extremely sweet, if we had chosen off the dessert menu this would have cost £3.95 so one would have half expected fresh/frozen raspberries to accompany the dessert...but that said, I thoroughly enjoyed it. My young grandson also devoured the crumble and only left a few crumbs. With 2 x 2 course menu @ £10.95 plus a large glass of red wine, a J20 and a large soda water with lime, the bill came to a little over £30. We both went on our way feeling satified and would definitely return again.

If however, you want a drink and something to eat, go elsewhere! It took me 25 minutes before I gave in when I wanted a drink, there was chaos because someone asked for a drink of wine and they had no idea where to find a bottle from their own wine list, it took 3 members of staff 15 minutes to pour a single glass of wine! We visited the malswick house to celebrate a friends birthday. It was one of her favourite places to eat in the past and we had all eaten here before and enjoyed it. Sadly the chef has left and it was honestly one of the WORST meals out we had all had! All of our meals were under cooked......our fries and veg were rock hard, the burgers were bloody, and worse still the fish was raw and rubbery!! The bits we could eat (because we were starving!) were completely tasteless! It was so upsetting for my friend who's birthday it was and the restaurant did not charge us for the meals but sadly I won't be returning again. This pub has opened and closed more times than I can remember and could do without a bad reputation. I'm afraid the chef is everything and they should stop serving food until they find another good one! The food previously was the only reason I went to the Malswick House. This took three attempts for the staff to find a clean one.The food quality was poor. Soggy chips, a steak with an aroma akin to off milk, a quarter of the 7oz steak being completely inedible. How can a bread bun for the falafel burger be so chewy, it was approaching histerical. Chef Andy seems like a popular guy on this thread, I can only assume he wasn't there early on a Friday evening. In summary a gamble with £30 which didn't come off, won't bother going again regardless of all the good reviews . It's too hit and miss by the sounds of it and there are lots of reliable alternatives within a few miles for guaranteed good food.

Malswick house is under new management; the new chef, Andy, and his team are welcoming and friendly, there is a wonderful atmosphere in the pubI went with a group of close friends who were visiting for the Cheltenham Races. From the moment we all walked into the pub and felt the warmth from the open fire, we were all relaxed and quite at home. There is an extensive menu with a selection of all different types of food. Most of the food is local produce and therefore very fresh. There are four different types of burgers including a falafel one. The food was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. I am very lucky to live just a stone's throw from Malswick House and will be visiting again soon.

My experience of the Malswick House was one I will treasure. After making the solo trip to the Forest of Dean (I live in Birmingham) to see the sights, I began to become a bit peckish around 6ish. Luckily I stumbled into a little pub called the 'Malswick House' and to my delight they offered an extensive range of 'pub grub'. From the menu I chose the Fish and Chips, and after a little wait of around 20 minutes, my food was ready. The only downfall of the dish was that there were no faggots with my chips. After asking if I could have any (and receiving a few concerned looks from one of the young waitresses),I began to understand that this was possibly a local food to my home town, and that nobody here had heard of them! This is perhaps a fault with the area itself rather than the pub. Despite the fact my Fish and Chips were 'fagotless', I enjoyed them thoroughly and would order them again. On the cleanliness side, things were also great. My table was pristine and the whole pub had a heart-warming feel to it. Although I was not there for long (due to the frosty weather) the outside of the pub looked fine, and my eyes paid particular attention to the greenery, which has obviously been tended to by an expert.I did not use the toilets whilst at the pub, but I'm sure they too were pristine, as the whole pub was in spick and spam condition.I would recommend the pub to my friend and family, as the whole atmosphere was friendly, and despite being almost 100 miles away from my house, I felt at home at the 'Malswick House'.

I was intrigued by the one negative and aggressive review among all the complimentary ones.I chose the belly pork as did the negative reviewer and found it delicious. The accompanying vegetables were inspire and very tasty. Our starters were almost enough for a main and very tasty. After the meal we chatted to Andy (the chef) and Megan (the sherry!). The atmosphere is extremely homely and the log fire fantastic.Andy explained that his menu was somewhat restricted by his kitchen but hopefully with continuing success that will be expanded. He has ambition to increase the menu choice and we wish him every success.A very welcoming restaurant and highly recommended. This is not a tied pub and the pumps benefit from this.I can only assume that the one negative review came from a hidden agenda.

Turned up for a last minute hoping for a roast dinner on Sunday to find only one other family of about four in the entire restaurant. Service was appalling, I asked for a lager and didn't get a glass just a bottle of over priced Budweiser with the top off. Ordered the roast belly pork for £12 thinking it was going to be just what I wanted, however when it arrived it was two slices of one inch wide fat. Alongside it, rather than vegetables I got two slices of dry spongy black pudding, which was cold. The two Apple and onion stuffing balls were stone cold and disgusting. The only good thing on this plate was the mash potato. I tried to get the attention of the staff to raise my issue with the meal at the time but they were all far too busy standing at the bar chatting. For a country pub hoping to be revived with new management; this is absolutely appalling. When I went to speak to the owner of the restaurant he turned around and said it wasn't his problem. I genuinely felt sick after eating this meal.

Popped in for an impromptu meal on a Thursday night. Relatively quiet except for a birthday party, and we were informed that there may be a wait as they had just ordered. Staff were very friendly and welcoming, and the menu is very good. We opted for a selection of the "nibbles", and they arrived in good time despite the party. All very good - lovely and tasty informal evening meal. Beer was good, with a tasty darker brew from local brewery that the other half even liked - normally a pale ale fan. The pub also welcomes dogs, so we will definitely return shortly with our little friend.

My husband and I enjoyed a really lovely lunch here: tasty, well-presented food, great value and all served by very efficient, friendly staff . The lattes we had were delicious, beautifully piping hot.I had the halloumi and roasted veg Panini and my husband chose the smoked salmon and artichoke sandwich, both were well filled and came with a generous amount of crisps and a salad garnish. We both opted to try a side dish, of which there is an amazing list of the most interesting sides I've come across. The chestnut mushrooms with pine nuts and spinach is a delight! We can't wait to visit again and try one of the hot main meals.

As a local, I know many people had gradually been coming to this restaurant under the old management less and less and there had been unsatisfactory feedback. But the current team took it over in July 2015 and have transformed it into a personal, friendly, cosy and truly atmospheric place with a fantastic menu. All the food is made on the premesis - I met the chef and was chatting with him - nothing is brought in pre-made. There is a highly comprehensive allergens breakdown for sensitive diners available and Andy the talented chef will happily prepare something specifically to your requirements if you let him know beforehand. A lovely waitress named Megan could not have been more professional, efficient and delightfully friendly and the same for the young man at the bar whose name I didn't catch. I have immediately made plans to come again and organise a large party booking in the function marquee in the Spring. Prices are extremely reasonable - from soup, sandwiches to pies, burgers, fish and chips and much much more. Go there, relax and feel at home.

This was my first visit but it won't be my last. They have a gorgeous calm resident husky called Kai, who is also a warm and friendly host but not intrusive. It is dog friendly in the pub section. Nice atmosphere. Generous portions. Varied menu. Burgers are not just tasty but a visual delight. Food tasted freshly prepared. Good strong coffee. Real ales. Very clean. Can't think of any faults.

All of us were very impressed with the quality of the food and presentation (of good restaurant standard). 2 real ales on (can be up to 3), a selection of real ciders from polypins and a decent selection of other drinks. Visited on a Saturday evening early September, seated in the conservatory and noticed food over the floor, staff explained there had been a children's b'day party in the afternoon. Ordered chicken creamy pie after a lengthy wait, we ended up going to the bar for drinks as no order had been taken. Noticed that another table were complaining, which gave me concern, however we continued to wait. Food finally came and what a disappointment, it was food from the freezer in a dish with a crusty pastry lid on it, the sauce was a watery mess, the chips described as chunky were far from, it was sent back, and the replacement wasn't much better, really disappointed, plenty of grumbles and moans from other tables. Overall, staff need further training and a decent chef needs to be employed, concentrate on the basics of cleanliness and quality food.

My friend and I decided to give this restaurant a try as I have passed several times and saw it had reopened. We had booked for 8.15 on a Saturday evening but had not been told that the whole of the bar area had been booked by a large party consisting of adults and small children . We were offered a table in the conservatory and had to squeeze through the crowded area around the bar but, as there were no doors, the noise would have made conversation impossible so settled for a table furthest from the group. The food was ok but nothing special and the service was reasonable but the atmosphere and noise meant that we certainly did not want to linger over the meal. The place looked as though the decoration had not been finished and the lack of any soft furnishings (curtains, blinds etc) meant that there was nothing to absorb any noise which just reverberated around the room. I will definitely not bother returning.

Went here a couple of years ago while in the area and it was terrible then, what made it worse was the then landlord replied to my review with abuse! Anyway back in the area for work again and saw it had a new name and a 'lick' of paint. Thought I'd drop in again and if met by the same landlord he could receive some of my thoughts to his reply. No signs of the previous landlord, good start! However not much choice on the money, a Friday evening but only a couple of people in there, always a bad sign! Food was average, no atmosphere. Will not be trying for a third time!!!!

Food wasn't bad but we ended up ordering something we didn't really want with so little to chose from.We were not offered a desert menu, offered coffee , just plates cleared and that was it. We had to go to the bar to pay our bill, as we were eager to leave. It was a shame our first impression wasn't the best as this is local for us and we eat out a lot, but this won't be somewhere we will rush to return to as there are many good places to eat around the area.Let's hope things improve and it doesn't end up closing again.

Lighting is awful, too bright in the bar and could hardly see in the restaurant. had a table for 6 afraid the table was going to collapse all the way through the meal as it was so wobbly. The food was not good at all and would rate it as poor pub grub. A lick of exterior paint has done nothing to improve this pub, what a disappointment. Having the opportunity to try the Malswick House proved to be a great disappointment. I ordered the steak ale pie but it was more like spot the beef pie. I pointed this out to the waiter who apologised and brought me some meat to go in it. You would have thought that someone would have made sure it was hot. No it wasn't. The chips served separately weren't cooked either. After all that I wasn't charged for the meal but for a pub that has only just reopened they really need to pay more attention to detail. I won't be revisiting, there are too many other good pubs in the area.

Called in here with a couple of friends while in the area. It was a Saturday evening around 7pm and tbh we thought it was closed by the lack of cars in the car park! We were in luck, or maybe not as we later found out that they were open and serving food. We entered an empty bar and were told we could sit anywhere, we sat down and looked at the menu, such a strange menu options. I decided to have the gammon. The food came pretty quickly, but if you can not cook a gammon steak and a few chips, you have a problem! No veg or salad was served with it. We left at 8.30pm and there was 2 couples in there. While we were eating there was a couple of dogs running around, I do not like paying to eat somewhere and you have dogs in with you! Value for money, I'd say no. Could of gone anywhere and eaten the same. Atmosphere=0. My advice, see an empty car park and drive on!!

We visited for Suday lunch and were not disappointed. We were received very cordially and immediately felt at home being well looked after. The menu is fairly standard but that's no problem for a Sunday lunch. All food was of good quality and well presented - the vegetables especially so. My beef was somewhat overdone but perhaps we messed things up by asking for one of our party to have very well done beef which she got and was very happy with. The lamb and pork were especially good. Starters were good. Pudding a little mixed. My bread piudding good but the eton mess had far too much cream so some was left - pity. The landlord (chef?) was much in evidence making sure we were happy just as it should be but often isn't. All in all a delightful way to spend a couple of hours made even better by the cost which is very acceptable for the quality on offer. We will be back.
